Abstract:A variable separation approach is used to obtain localized coherent structures in a generalized (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger system. Applying a special Bäcklund transformation and introducing arbitrary functions of the seed solutions, the abundance of the localized structures of this system are derived. By selecting the arbitrary functions appropriately, some special types of localized exitations such as dromions, dromion lattice, peakons, breathers and instantons are constructed.

Abstract:We continue our study of solitons in noncommutative gauge theories and present an extremely simple BPS solution of = 4 U(1) noncommutative gauge theory in 4 dimensions, which describes N infinite D1-strings that pierce a D3-brane at various points, in the presence of a background B-field in the Seiberg-Witten α'→0 limit. We call this solution the N-fluxon. For N = 1 we calculate the complete spectrum of small fluctuations about the fluxon and find three kinds of modes: the fluctuations of the superstring in 10 dimensions arising from fundamental strings attached to the D1 strings, the ordinary particles of the gauge theory in 4 dimensions and a set of states with discrete spectrum, localized at the intersection point - corresponding to fundamental strings stretched between the D1-string and the D3-brane. We discuss the fluctuations about the N-fluxon as well and derive explicit expressions for the amplitudes of interactions between these various modes. We show that translations in noncommutative gauge theories are equivalent to gauge transformations (plus a constant shift of the gauge field) and discuss the implications for the translational zero modes of our solitons. We also find the dyonic versions of N-fluxon, as well as of our previous string-monopole solution.

Abstract:We point out some intriguing analogies between field theoretic solitons (topological defects) and D-branes. Annihilating soliton-antisoliton pairs can produce stable solitons of lower dimensionality. Solitons that localize massless gauge fields in their world volume automatically imply the existence of open flux tubes ending on them and closed flux tubes propagating in the bulk. We discuss some aspects of this localization on explicit examples of unstable wall-anti-wall systems. The annihilation of these walls can be described in terms of tachyon condensation which renders the world-volume gauge field non-dynamical. During this condensation the world volume gauge fields (open string states) are resonantly excited. These can later decay into closed strings, or get squeezed into a network flux tubes similar to a network of cosmic strings formed at a cosmological phase transition. Although, as in the $D$-brane case, perturbatively one can find exact time-dependent solutions, when the energy of the system stays localized in the plane of the original soliton, such solutions are unstable with respect to decay into open and closed string states. Thus, when a pair of such walls annihilates, the energy is carried away (at least) by closed string excitations (``glueballs''), which are the lowest energy excitations about the bulk vacuum. Suggested analogies can be useful for the understanding of the complicated D-brane dynamics and of the production of topological defects and reheating during brane collision in the early universe.

Topological defects on solutions of non-relativistic equation for extended double ring-shaped potential

Abstract:In this study, we focus into the non-relativistic wave equation described by the Schrödinger equation, specifically considering angular-dependent potentials within the context of a topological defect background generated by a cosmic string. Our primary goal is to explore quasi-exactly solvable problems by introducing an extended ring-shaped potential. We utilize the Bethe ansatz method to determine the angular solutions, while the radial solutions are obtained using special functions. Our findings demonstrate that the eigenvalue solutions of quantum particles are intricately influenced by the presence of the topological defect of the cosmic string, resulting in significant modifications compared to those in a flat space background. The existence of the topological defect induces alterations in the energy spectra, disrupting degeneracy. Afterwards, we extend our analysis to study the same problem in the presence of a ring-shaped potential against the background of another topological defect geometry known as a point-like global monopole. Following a similar procedure, we obtain the eigenvalue solutions and analyze the results. Remarkably, we observe that the presence of a global monopole leads to a decrease in the energy levels compared to the flat space results. In both cases, we conduct a thorough numerical analysis to validate our findings.

Abstract:Using effective field theory approach one can describe localization of electromagnetic field on a non-topological soliton. Pursuing this aim we consider the U(1) gauge theory with gauge kinetic coupling to a self-interacting complex neutral Proca field. The model possesses single energy scale given by the vector boson mass. Considering spherically symmetric stationary configurations, we study vibrational modes of the Proca field on the background of the soliton and discuss their properties.

Abstract:We demonstrate that field theories involving explicit breaking of continous symmetries, incorporate two generic classes of topological defects each of which is stable for a particular range of parameters. The first class includes defects of the usual type where the symmetry gets restored in the core and vacuum energy gets trapped there. We show however that these defect solutions become unstable for certain ranges of parameters and decay not to the vacuum but to another type of stable defect where the symmetry in not restored in the core. In the wall case, initially spherical, bubble-like configurations are simulated numerically and shown to evolve generically towards a planar collapse. In the string case, the decay of the symmetric core vortex resembles the decay of a semilocal string to a skyrmion with the important difference that while the skyrmion is unstable and decays to the vacuum, the resulting non-symmetric vortex is topologically stable.
Particle and wave dynamics of nonlocal solitons in external potentials

Abstract:We study nonlocal bright solitons subject to external spatially nonuniform potentials. If the potential is slowly varying on the soliton scale, we derive analytical soliton solutions behaving like Newtonian particles. If the potential has the form of an attractive delta-like point defect, we identify different dynamical regimes, defined by the relative strength of the nonlocality and the point defect. In these regimes, the soliton can be trapped at the defect's location, via a nonlinear resonance with a defect mode -- which is found analytically -- reflected by or transmitted through the defect, featuring a wave behavior. Our analytical predictions are corroborated by results of direct numerical simulations.

Abstract:We confront the problem of giving a fundamental definition to perturbative string theory in spacetimes with totally compact space (taken to be a torus for simplicity, though the nature of the problem is very general) and non-compact time. Due to backreaction induced by the presence of even a single string quantum, the usual formulation of perturbative string theory in a fixed classical background is infrared-divergent at all subleading orders in the string coupling, and needs to be amended. The problem can be seen as a closed string analogue of D0-brane recoil under an impact by closed strings (a situation displaying extremely similar infrared divergences). Inspired by the collective coordinate treatment of the D0-brane recoil, whereby the translational modes of the D0-brane are introduced as explicit dynamical variables in the path integral, we construct a similar formalism for the case of string-induced gravitational backreaction, in which the spatially uniform modes of the background fields on the compact space are quantized explicitly. The formalism can equally well be seen as an ultraviolet completion of a minisuperspace quantum cosmology with string degrees of freedom. We consider the amplitudes for the universe to have two cross-sections with specified spatial properties and string contents, and show (at the first non-trivial order) that they are finite within our formalism.

Scattering of sine-Gordon kinks with internal structure in an extended nonlinear $O(3)$ sigma model

Abstract:In this paper, we present topological defects in $(1,1)$ dimensions, described by an extended nonlinear $O(3)$ sigma model. We consider spherical coordinates $(\phi,\chi)$ in the $S^2$ isotopic space and a potential $V(\phi,\chi)$. For specific forms of the potential, it is possible to apply the Bogomol'nyi method, resulting in first-order equations of motion with solutions that minimize energy. We study a model with an explicit solution for the field $\phi$ that resembles the ubiquitous sine-Gordon kink/antikink, but with an internal structure given by the field $\chi$ with a form antilump/lump that depends on a constant $C$. The soliton-antisoliton scattering process depends on $C$ and on the initial velocity of the pair. Some results are reported, such as: one-bounce scattering for $\phi$, or strong emission of radiation for $\phi$, followed by i) annihilation of $\chi$; ii) same pattern antilump-antilump or lump-antilump for $\chi$; iii) inversion antilump-antilump to lump-lump for $\chi$; iv) inversion antilump-lump to lump-antilump for $\chi$. Other findings are: v) annihilation of the pair soliton-antisoliton with the emission of scalar radiation; vi) emission of pairs of oscillations around the vacuum for $\phi$ and $\chi$. The energy density shows that the defect has an internal structure as a nested defect of an antilump inside a kink. The lump core of the defect is responsible for the emission of radiation. The changing of structure of the defects during the scattering is analyzed not only with the field profiles in the physical $(1,1)$ space, but also in the internal $S^2$ space, which gives some new insight into the process.

Abstract:Solitons in two-dimensional quantum field theory exhibit patterns of degeneracies and associated selection rules on scattering amplitudes. We develop a representation theory that captures these intriguing features of solitons. This representation theory is based on an algebra we refer to as the "strip algebra", $\textrm{Str}_{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{M})$, which is defined in terms of the non-invertible symmetry, $\mathcal{C},$ a fusion category, and its action on boundary conditions encoded by a module category, $\mathcal{M}$. The strip algebra is a $C^*$-weak Hopf algebra, a fact which can be elegantly deduced by quantizing the three-dimensional Drinfeld center TQFT, $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C}),$ on a spatial manifold with corners. These structures imply that the representation category of the strip algebra is also a unitary fusion category which we identify with a dual category $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{M}}^{*}.$ We present a straightforward method for analyzing these representations in terms of quiver diagrams where nodes are vacua and arrows are solitons and provide examples demonstrating how the representation theory reproduces known degeneracies and selection rules of soliton scattering. Our analysis provides the general framework for analyzing non-invertible symmetry on manifolds with boundary and applies both to the case of boundaries at infinity, relevant to particle physics, and boundaries at finite distance, relevant in conformal field theory or condensed matter systems.

Solitons with Self-induced Topological Nonreciprocity

Abstract:The nonlinear Schrodinger equation supports solitons -- self-interacting, localized states that behave as nearly independent objects. We exhibit solitons with self-induced nonreciprocal dynamics in a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. This nonreciprocal behavior, dependent on soliton power, arises from the interplay between linear and nonlinear terms in the equations of motion. Initially stable at high power, solitons exhibit nonreciprocal instabilities as power decreases, leading to unidirectional acceleration and amplification. This behavior is topologically protected by winding numbers on the solitons' mean-field Hamiltonian and their stability matrix, linking nonlinear dynamics and point gap topology in non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.

Putting Liouville String Models of (Quantum) Gravity to Test

Abstract:Critical String Theory is by definition an $S$-matrix theory. In this sense, (quantum) gravity situations where a unitary $S$-matrix may not be a well-defined concept, as a consequence of the existence of macroscopic (global) or microscopic (local) gravitational fluctuations with event horizons, present a challenge to string theory. In this article, we take some modest steps in suggesting alternative treatments of such cases via non-critical (Liouville) strings,which do not have a well-defined S matrix, but for which a superscattering \$ matrix is mathematically consistent. After a brief review of the underlying mathematical formalism, we consider a specific stringy model of induced non-criticality, with dynamical formation of horizons, associated with the recoil of a D-particle defect, embedded in our four-dimensional space time, during its scattering with a (macroscopic) number of closed string states. We study in detail the associated spacetime distortion in the neighbourhood of the defect, which has the form of a finite-radius curved `bubble', matched with a Minkowskian space-time in the exterior. As a consequence of the non-criticality of the underlying sigma-model, the space time is unstable, and has non-trivial stochastic properties: thermal properties due to its ``Rindler accelerating nature'', and entropy growth for an asymptotic observer, associated with information being carried away by the `recoil' degrees of freedom. We also discuss phenomenological (and cosmological) constraints on the model.

Abstract:In this research paper, we discussed some geometric axioms of a relativistic string cloud spacetime attached with strange quark matter. We determined the conformal $ \eta $-Ricci soliton on a relativistic string cloud spacetime attached with strange quark matter with a $ \varphi(\mathcal{R}ic) $-vector field. In addition, we illustrated some physical significance of conformal pressure $ P $ in terms of conformal $ \eta $-Ricci soliton with the same vector field. Besides this, we deduced a generalized Liouville equation from the conformal $ \eta $-Ricci soliton. Furthermore, we examine the harmonic relevance of conformal $ \eta $-Ricci soliton on string cloud spacetime attached with strange quark matter with a potential function $ \psi $. Finally, we turned up a necessary and sufficient condition for the 1-form $ \eta $, which is the $ {g} $-dual of the vector field $ \gamma $ on a string cloud spacetime attached with strange quark matter to be a solution for the Schrödinger-Ricci equation.

Effective String Tension and Renormalizability: String Theory in a Noncommutative Space

Abstract:We show that the one loop amplitudes of open and closed string theory in a constant background two-form tensor field are characterized by an effective string tension larger than the fundamental string tension, and by the appearance of antisymmetric and symmetric noncommutativity parameters. We derive the form of the phase functions normalizing planar and nonplanar tachyon scattering amplitudes in this background, verifying the decoupling of the closed string sector in the regime of infinite momentum transfer. We show that the functional dependence of the phase functions on the antisymmetric star product of external momenta permits interpretation as a finite wavefunction renormalization of vertex operators in the open string sector. Using world-sheet duality we clarify the regimes of finite and zero momentum transfer between boundaries, demonstrating the existence of poles in the nonplanar amplitude when the momentum transfer equals the mass of an on-shell closed string state. Neither noncommutativity parameter has any impact on the renormalizability of open and closed string theory in the Wilsonian sense. We comment on the relationship to noncommutative scalar field theory and the UV-IR correspondence.

Abstract:A (2+1)-dimensional modified KdV (2DmKdV) system is considered from several perspectives. Firstly, residue symmetry, a type of nonlocal symmetry, and the B"{a}cklund transformation are obtained via the truncated Painlev'{e} expansion method. Subsequently, the residue symmetry is localized to a Lie point symmetry of a prolonged system, from which the finite transformation group is derived. Secondly, the integrability of the 2DmKdV system is examined under the sense of consistent tanh expansion solvability. Simultaneously, explicit soliton-cnoidal wave solutions are provided. Finally, abundant patterns of soliton molecules are presented by imposing the velocity resonance condition on the multiple-soliton solution.

Some Aspects of Massive World-Brane Dynamics

Abstract:We study the internal dynamics of Ramond-Ramond solitons excited far from the BPS limit by leading Regge trajectory open strings. The simplest world volume process for such strings is splitting into two smaller pieces, and we calculate the corresponding decay rates. Compared to the conventional open superstring, the splitting of states polarized parallel to the brane is suppressed by powers of logarithms of the energy. The rate for states polarized transverse to the brane {\em decreases} with increasing energy. We also calculate the static force between a D-brane excited by a massive open string and an unexcited D-brane parallel to it. The result shows that transversely polarized massive open strings endow D-branes with a size of order the string scale.

Soliton-like behaviour in non-integrable systems

Abstract:We present a general scheme for constructing robust excitations (soliton-like) in non-integrable multicomponent systems. By robust, we mean localised excitations that propagate with almost constant velocity and which interact cleanly with little to no radiation. We achieve this via a reduction of these complex systems to more familiar effective chiral field-theories using perturbation techniques and the Fredholm alternative. As a specific platform, we consider the generalised multicomponent Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations (MNLS) with arbitrary interaction coefficients. This non-integrable system reduces to uncoupled Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations, one for each sound speed of the system. This reduction then enables us to exploit the multi-soliton solutions of the KdV equation which in turn leads to the construction of soliton-like profiles for the original non-integrable system. We demonstrate that this powerful technique leads to the coherent evolution of excitations with minimal radiative loss in arbitrary non-integrable systems. These constructed coherent objects for non-integrable systems bear remarkably close resemblance to true solitons of integrable models. Although we use the ubiquitous MNLS system as a platform, our findings are a major step forward towards constructing excitations in generic continuum non-integrable systems.

Abstract:In this report, the various 1D single soliton and multi-soliton solutions of the Sine-Gordon equation are explored. First the topological kink solitons and their properties for the Sine-Gordon, as well as the $\phi^{4}$ model are investigated. This includes energy and momentum conservation laws for both models, as well as static kinks and antikinks. The Bogomol'nyi equation and the importance of Lorentz invariance are also discussed. Then in the second half, the focus is on Sine-Gordon multi-kink solutions, which are found by a separation of variables method rather than using inverse scattering or Bäcklund transforms. These kink-kink and kink-antikink collisions are explained by considering topological charges and interaction energies. The special bound state dynamical breather soliton is obtained and properties such as the binding energy of the breather are presented. Following this, the Frenkel-Kontorova model is explored, leading to the discrete Sine-Gordon model and the introduction of discrete breathers.

Composite topological solitons consisting of domain walls, strings, and monopoles in $O(N)$ models

Abstract:We study various composites of global solitons consisting of domain walls, strings, and monopoles in linear $O(N)$ models with $N=2$ and $3$. Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of the $O(N)$ symmetry down to $O(N-1)$ results in the vacuum manifold $S^{N-1}$, together with a perturbed scalar potential in the presence of a small explicit symmetry breaking (ESB) interaction. The $O(2)$ model is equivalent to the axion model admitting topological global (axion) strings attached by $N_{\rm DW}$ domain walls. We point out for the $N_{\rm DW} = 2$ case that the topological stability of the string with two domain walls is ensured by sequential SSBs $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^2 \to \mathbb{Z}_2 \to 1$, where the first SSB occurs in the vacuum leading to the topological domain wall as a mother soliton, only inside which the second SSB occurs giving rise to a subsequent kink inside the mother wall. From the bulk viewpoint, this kink is identical to a global string as a daughter soliton. This observation can be naturally extended to the $O(3)$ model, where a global monopole as a daughter soliton appears as a kink in a mother string or as a vortex on a mother domain wall, depending on ESB interactions. In the most generic case, the stability of the composite system consisting of the monopole, string, and domain wall is understood by the SSB $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^3 \to (\mathbb{Z}_2)^2 \to \mathbb{Z}_2 \to 1$, in which the first SSB at the vacuum gives rise to the domain wall triggering the second one, so that the daughter string appears as a domain wall inside the mother wall triggering the third SSB, which leads to a granddaughter monopole as a kink inside the daughter vortex. We demonstrate numerical simulations for the dynamical evolution of the composite solitons.

Abstract:The theory of linear dispersive equations predicts that waves should spread out and disperse over time. However, it is a remarkable phenomenon, observed both in theory and practice, that once nonlinear effects are taken into account, solitary wave or soliton solutions can be created, which can be stable enough to persist indefinitely. The construction of such solutions can be relatively straightforward, but the fact that they are stable requires some significant amounts of analysis to establish, in part due to symmetries in the equation (such as translation invariance) which create degeneracy in the stability analysis. The theory is particularly difficult in the critical case in which the nonlinearity is at exactly the right power to potentially allow for a self-similar blowup. In this article we survey some of the highlights of this theory, from the more classical orbital stability analysis of Weinstein and Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss, to the more recent asymptotic stability and blowup analysis of Martel-Merle and Merle-Raphael, as well as current developments in using this theory to rigorously demonstrate controlled blowup for several key equations.
