Abstract:The dissipative quantum electromagnetics is introduced in a comprehensive manner as a field-matter-bath coupling problem. First, the matter is described by a cluster of Lorentz oscillators. Then the Maxwellian free field is coupled to the Lorentz oscillators to describe a frequency dispersive medium. The classical Hamiltonian is derived for such a coupled system, using Lorenz gauge and decoupled scalar and vector potential formulation. The classical equations of motion are derivable from the Hamiltonian using Hamilton equations. Then the Hamiltonian is quantized with all the pertinent variables with the introduction of commutators between the variables and their conjugate pairs. The quantum equations of motion can be derived using the quantum Hamilton equations. It can be shown that such a quantization scheme preserves the quantum commutators introduced. Then a noise bath consisting of simple harmonic oscillators is introduced and coupled to the matter consisting of Lorentz oscillators to induce quantum loss. Langevin source emerges naturally in such a procedure, and it can be shown that the results are consistent with the fluctuation dissipation theorem, and the quantization procedure of Welsch's group. The advantage of the present procedure is that no diagonalization of the Hamiltonian is necessary to arrive at the quantum equations of motion.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel algebraic and geometric description for the dissipative dynamics. Our formulation bears some similarity to the Poisson structure for non-dissipative systems. We develop a canonical description for constrained dissipative systems through an extension of the Dirac brackets concept, and we present a new formula for calculating Dirac brackets. This formula is particularly useful in the description of dynamical systems with many second-class constraints. After presenting the necessary formal background we illustrate our method on several examples taken from particle dynamics, continuum media physics and wave mechanics.

Abstract:Classical strings coupled to a metric, a dilaton and an axion, as conceived by superstring theory, suffer from ultraviolet divergences due to self-interactions. Consequently, as in the case of radiating charged particles, the corresponding effective string dynamics can not be derived from an action principle. We propose a fundamental principle to build this dynamics, based on local energy-momentum conservation in terms of a well-defined distribution-valued energy-momentum tensor. Its continuity equation implies a finite equation of motion for self-interacting strings. The construction is carried out explicitly for strings in uniform motion in arbitrary space-time dimensions, where we establish cancelations of ultraviolet divergences which parallel superstring non-renormalization theorems. The uniqueness properties of the resulting dynamics are analyzed.

Abstract:We study dissipative dynamics constructed by means of non-commutative Dirichlet forms for various lattice systems with multiparticle interactions associated to CCR algebras. We give a number of explicit examples of such models. Using an idea of quasi-invariance of a state, we show how one can construct unitary representations of various groups. Moreover in models with locally conserved quantities associated to an infinite lattice we show that there is no spectral gap and the corresponding dissipative dynamics decay to equilibrium polynomially in time.

Abstract:This Perspective presents a comprehensive account of the dissipaton theories developed in our group since 2014, including the physical picture of dissipatons and the phase-space dissipaton algebra. The dissipaton- equation-of-motion-space (DEOM-space) formulations cover the Schrödinger picture, the Heisenberg picture, and further the imaginary-time DEOM. Recently developed are also the dissipaton theories for studying equilibrium and nonequilibrium thermodynamic mixing processes. The Jarzynski equality and Crooks relation are accurately reproduced numerically. It is anticipated that dissipaton theories would remain essential towards a maturation of quantum mechanics of open systems.

Abstract:Dissipative phenomena manifest in multiple mechanical systems. In this dissertation, different geometric frameworks for modelling non-conservative dynamics are considered. The objective is to generalize several results from conservative systems to dissipative systems, specially those concerning the symmetries and integrability of these systems. More specifically, three classes of geometric frameworks modelling dissipative systems are considered: systems with external forces, contact systems and systems with impacts. The first two allow modelling a continuous dissipation of energy over time, while the latter also permits considering abrupt changes of energy in the instants of the impacts.

Abstract:The overall goal of this paper was to enhance the bioavailability of orally delivered insulin. A mucoadhesive amphiphilic chitosan derivative, lauroyl sulphated chitosan (LSCS) was used as the oral carrier for insulin. Trans epithelial electrical resistance experiment was performed on Caco-2 cell monolayers and observed a reduction of TEER after the incubation with the particles. The insulin transport experiment was done with excised rat intestinal tissue using an Ussing chamber and observed an enhanced transport of insulin due to the effect of LSCS. Following oral administration of FITC-insulin loaded LSCS in SD rats; the qualitative biodistribution of the administered drug was investigated using a fluorescence microscopy. The results showed the time dependent distribution of insulin through gastro intestinal tract (GIT). The efficacy of insulin-loaded LSCS sub micro particles (LSCS-ins) was investigated in diabetic rats by measuring the blood glucose level and found to be an effective reduction of the blood glucose level after oral administration of LSCS-ins. The pharmacological availability was found to be 2.5-fold and had a longer pharmacological activity compared with that of native insulin via oral and subcutaneous (sc) routes. The enhanced oral bioavailability of insulin may be associated with a higher release rate in the intestinal juice, enhanced absorption by improved permeability and increased residence time in the intestinal cavity. Thus, encapsulating insulin in LSCS matrix is a promising carrier for sustained and controlled drug delivery with improved bioavailability of insulin for diabetic patients.
Effective field theories of dissipative fluids with one-form symmetries

Abstract:A system with a one-form global symmetry at finite temperature can be viewed as a dissipative fluid of string-like objects. In this work, we classify and construct the most general effective field theories for hydrodynamics of such string fluids, in a probe limit where the one-form charge density is decoupled from the energy-momentum tensor. We show that at leading order in the derivative expansion, there are two distinct types of diffusive transport in a string fluid depending on the discrete spacetime symmetries present in it. One particular application of interest is magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), where the effective field theories describe the diffusion of magnetic field lines. Due to the distinction between the effective field theories for different discrete symmetries, we show that the MHD of a fluid with charge conjugation symmetry is qualitatively different from that of a neutron star, which we previously discussed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.01636" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.01636">arXiv:2207.01636</a>. The explicit effective actions that we write down can be used to obtain the dispersion relations $\omega(k)$ up to cubic order in momenta for each of the different discrete symmetry choices. As another application of this formalism, we show that when the one-form symmetry is spontaneously broken, the effective action reduces to the Maxwell theory. This confirms the interpretation of the photon as a Goldstone boson arising from the spontaneous breaking of a one-form symmetry.

Abstract:Geometrical formulation of classical mechanics with forces that are not necessarily potential-generated is presented. It is shown that a natural geometrical "playground" for a mechanical system of point particles lacking Lagrangian and/or Hamiltonian description is an odd dimensional line element contact bundle. Time evolution is governed by certain canonical two-form $\Omega$ (an analog of $dp/\dq-dH/\dt$), which is constructed purely from forces and the metric tensor entering the kinetic energy of the system. Attempt to "dissipative quantization" in terms of the two-form $\Omega$ is proposed. The Feynman's path integral over histories of the system is rearranged to a "world-sheet" functional integral. The "umbilical string" surfaces entering the theory connect the classical trajectory of the system and the given Feynman history. In the special case of potential-generated forces, "world-sheet" approach precisely reduces to the standard quantum mechanics. However, a transition probability amplitude expressed in terms of "string functional integral" is applicable (at least academically) when a general dissipative environment is discussed.

Abstract:We generalize the recent work of Shibata and Katsura, who considered a S=1/2 chain with alternating XX and YY couplings in the presence of dephasing, the dynamics of which are described by the GKLS master equation. Their model is equivalent to a non-Hermitian system described by the Kitaev formulation in terms of a single Majorana species hopping on a two-leg ladder in the presence of a nondynamical Z_2 gauge field. Our generalization involves Dirac gamma matrix `spin' operators on the square lattice, and maps onto a non-Hermitian square lattice bilayer which is also Kitaev-solvable. We describe the exponentially many non-equilibrium steady states in this model. We identify how the spin degrees of freedom can be accounted for in the 2d model in terms of the gauge-invariant quantities and then proceed to study the Liouvillian spectrum. We use a genetic algorithm to estimate the Liouvillian gap and the first decay modes for large system sizes. We observe a transition in the first decay modes, similar to that found by Shibata and Katsura. The results we obtain are consistent with a perturbative analysis for small and large values of the dissipation strength.

As a concrete example, we investigate the transverse Ising model, we derive the covariance matrix at the steady state of the system and we investigate its critical behavior.

Abstract:This study investigates the intricate relationship between dissipative processes of open quantum systems and the non-Hermitian quantum field theory of relativistic fermionic systems. By examining the influence of dissipative effects on Dirac fermions via Lindblad formalism, we elucidate the effects of coupling relativistic Dirac particles with the environment and show the lack of manifest Lorentz invariance. Employing rigorous theoretical analysis, we generalize the collisionless Boltzmann equations for the relativistic dissipation-driven fermionic system and find the Lyapunov equation, which governs the stationary solutions. Using our formalism, one presents a simple non-Hermitian model that the relativistic fermionic particles and anti-particles are stable. Going further, using the solution to the Lyapunov equations, one analyses the effect of dissipation on the stationary charge imbalance of this non-Hermitian model and finds that the dissipation can induce a new kind of charge imbalance compared with the collisionless equilibrium case.

Abstract:Lindbladian formalism, as tuned to dissipative and open systems, has been all-pervasive to in- terpret non-equilibrium steady states of quantum many-body systems. We study the fate of free fermionic and superconducting phases in a dissipative one-dimensional Kitaev model - where the bath acts both as a source and a sink of fermionic particles with different coupling rates. As a function of these two couplings, we investigate the steady state, its entanglement content, and its approach from varying initial states. Interestingly, we find that the steady state phase diagram retains decipherable signatures of ground state critical physics. We also show that early-time fi- delity is a useful marker to find a subclass of phase transitions in such situations. Moreover, we show that the survival of critical signatures at late-times, strongly depend on the thermal nature of the steady state. This connection hints at a correspondence between quantum observables and classical magnetism in the steady state of such systems. Our work uncovers interesting connections between dissipative quantum many-body systems, thermalization of a classical spin and many-body quantum critical phenomena.

Abstract:We show symmetric dynamics in dissipative quantum many-body systems. Given some conditions on the Hamiltonian and the jump operators, the time evolution of certain observables can be identical for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in an Ising model with external fields or for repulsive and attractive interactions in a Hubbard model. We present two theorems to determine the existence of such a dynamical symmetry in dissipative quantum systems. The symmetry under the steady state is present independently on the initial state. Further constraint on the initial state leads to a stronger dynamical symmetry in real-time evolutions. We demonstrate the application of our theorems in dissipative Ising and Hubbard models. In addition, for the Fermi-Hubbard model, our results also reveal a connection between spin and charge densities in dissipative dynamics. We validate the discussions with numerical simulations performed using tensor network algorithms.

Abstract:We develop a quantum theory for topological systems incorporating dissipations, noises, and thermal effects with strong non-Markovian dynamics, while other approaches in the literature may not be applicable. We derive the exact master equation and transient quantum transport for the study of dissipative topological systems, mainly focusing on noninteracting topological insulators and topological superconductors. The resulting exact master equation is also applicable to systems initially entangled with environments. In this theory, dissipations and topological states can be related to each other through spectral densities which tie up the reservoir spectra and topological-state wave functions in the system-reservoir couplings when either the system or environment is a topological system. We also apply the theory to study quantized Majorana conductance in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid systems incorporating different dissipations, noises, and thermal effects.
