Abstract:We determine the quantum automorphism groups of finite graphs. These are quantum subgroups of the quantum permutation groups defined by Wang. The quantum automorphism group is a stronger invariant for finite graphs than the usual one. We get a quantum dihedral group D4.

Abstract:We introduce a quantum automorphism group for hypergraphs, which turns out to generalize the quantum automorphism group of Bichon for classical graphs. Further, we show that our quantum automorphism group acts on hypergraph C*-algebras as recently defined. In particular, this action generalizes the one on graph C*-algebras by Schmidt-Weber in 2018.

Abstract:We give a characterisation of quantum automorphism groups of trees. In particular, for every tree, we show how to iteratively construct its quantum automorphism group using free products and free wreath products. This can be considered a quantum version of Jordan's theorem for the automorphism groups of trees. This is one of the first characterisations of quantum automorphism groups of a natural class of graphs with quantum symmetry.

Abstract:We present a sequence of finite graphs with trivial automorphism group and non-trivial quantum automorphism group, which are the first known examples of graphs with this property. The examples are based on solution groups to (binary) linear systems. We first show that the dual of every solution group occurs as the quantum automorphism group of some graph, and then construct an infinite sequence of systems whose solution groups are nontrivial but perfect, i.e., they have trivial abelianizations. We also prove a weak quantum analog of Frucht's theorem, namely that every classical finite group $\Gamma$ can occur as the quantum automorphism group of a graph. Moreover there are graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ such that $\mathrm{Aut}(G_1) \cong \Gamma \cong \mathrm{Aut}(G_2)$, but $\mathrm{Qut}(G_1) \not \cong \mathrm{Qut}(G_2)$ for any finite group $\Gamma$. This allows us to answer several open questions from the literature, such as proving that there do not exist any "quantum excluding groups". Additionally, we present a procedure that allows us to decolor the vertices of any vertex-colored graph while preserving its quantum automorphism group.

Abstract:Recently, the work on quantum automorphism groups of graphs has seen renewed progress, which we expand in this paper. Quantum symmetry is a richer notion of symmetry than the classical symmetries of a graph. In general, it is non-trivial to decide whether a given graph does have quantum symmetries or not. For vertex-transitive graphs, the quantum symmetries have already been determined in earlier work on up to 11 and on 13 vertices. This paper fills the gap by determining for all vertex-transitive graphs on 12 vertices, whether they have quantum symmetries and for most of these graphs we also give their quantum automorphism group explicitly.

Abstract:We study the topological structure of the automorphism groups of compact quantum groups showing that, in parallel to a classical result due to Iwasawa, the connected component of identity of the automorphism group and of the “inner” automorphism group coincide. For compact matrix quantum groups, which can be thought of as quantum analogues of compact Lie groups, we prove that the inner automorphism group is a compact Lie group and the outer automorphism group is discrete. Applications of this to the study of group actions on compact quantum groups are highlighted. We end by providing examples of compact matrix quantum groups with infinitely-generated fusion rings, in stark contrast with the classical situation. Along the way we study the invariant theory of finite group actions on free Laurent rings and show that the rings of invariants are, in general, not finitely generated.

Quantum Sabidussi's Theorem

Abstract:Sabidussi's theorem [Duke Math. J. 28, 1961] gives necessary and sufficient conditions under which the automorphism group of a lexicographic product of two graphs is a wreath product of the respective automorphism groups. We prove a quantum version of Sabidussi's theorem for finite graphs, with the automorphism groups replaced by quantum automorphism groups and the wreath product replaced by the free wreath product of quantum groups. This extends the result of Chassaniol [J. Algebra 456, 2016], who proved it for regular graphs. Moreover, we apply our result to lexicographic products of quantum vertex transitive graphs, determining their quantum automorphism groups even when Sabidussi's conditions do not apply.

Abstract:We formulate a notion of the quantum automorphism group of a $2$-graph. After some preliminary computations, we define quantum isomorphism between a pair of $2$-graphs. We produce a `non-trivial' example of a pair of $2$-graphs that are not quantum isomorphic to each other.

Abstract:We classify all compact quantum groups whose C*-algebra sits inside that of the free unitary quantum groups $U_{N}^{+}$. In other words, we classify all discrete quantum subgroups of $\widehat{U}_{N}^{+}$, thereby proving a quantum variant of Kurosh's theorem to some extent. This yields interesting families which can be described using free wreath products and free complexifications. They can also be seen as quantum automorphism groups of specific quantum graphs which generalize finite rooted regular trees, providing explicit examples of quantum trees.

Abstract:We undertake a study of the notion of a quantum graph over arbitrary finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras $B$ equipped with arbitrary faithful states. Quantum graphs are realised principally as either certain operators on $L^2(B)$, the quantum adjacency matrices, or as certain operator bimodules over $B'$. We present a simple, purely algebraic approach to proving equivalence between these settings, thus recovering existing results in the tracial state setting. For non-tracial states, our approach naturally suggests a generalisation of the operator bimodule definition, which takes account of (some aspect of) the modular automorphism group of the state. Furthermore, we show that each such ``non-tracial'' quantum graphs corresponds to a ``tracial'' quantum graph which satisfies an extra symmetry condition. We study homomorphisms (or CP-morphisms) of quantum graphs arising from UCP maps, and the closely related examples of quantum graphs constructed from UCP maps. We show that these constructions satisfy automatic bimodule properties. We study quantum automorphisms of quantum graphs, give a definition of what it means for a compact quantum group to act on an operator bimodule, and prove an equivalence between this definition, and the usual notion defined using a quantum adjacency matrix. We strive to give a relatively self-contained, elementary, account, in the hope this will be of use to other researchers in the field.

Abstract:In 1998, Wang constructed an ergodic action of the compact quantum group $U_n^+$ (free unitary quantum group) on the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_n$. Later, in 2018-2019, S. Joardar and A. Mandal showed that the quantum automorphism group of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_{n}$ (as a graph $C^*$-algebra) is $U_n^+$ in the category introduced by them.

Quantum properties of $\mathcal F$-cographs

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of quantum properties of finite graphs, namely, quantum asymmetry, quantum symmetry, and quantum isomorphism. We define the Schmidt alternative for a class of graphs, which reveals to be a useful tool for studying quantum symmetries of graphs. After showing that quantum isomorphic graphs have quantum isomorphic centers and connected components, we solve the aforementioned problems for the classes of cographs and forests. We also compute their quantum automorphism groups for the first time. In doing so, we extend to the noncommutative setting a theorem of Jordan. Using general results on $\mathcal F$-cographs, we extend the precedent results to $\mathcal G_5$-cographs and tree-cographs, two distinct strictly proper superclasses of cographs and forests respectively. Finally, we show that quantum isomorphic planar graphs are isomorphic.

Quantum representation of finite groups

Abstract:The concept of quantum representation of finite groups (QRFG) has been a fundamental aspect of quantum computing for quite some time, playing a role in every corner, from elementary quantum logic gates to the famous Shor's and Grover's algorithms. In this article, we provide a formal definition of this concept using both group theory and differential geometry. Our work proves the existence of a quantum representation for any finite group and outlines two methods for translating each generator of the group into a quantum circuit, utilizing gate decomposition of unitary matrices and variational quantum algorithms. Additionally, we provide numerical simulations of an explicit example on an open-access platform. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness and potential of QRFG by showing its role in the implementation of some quantum algorithms and quantum finite automata.

Abstract:The automorphism group of a quantised coordinate algebra is usually much smaller than that of its classical counterpart. Nevertheless, these automorphism groups are often very difficult to calculate. In this paper, we calculate the automorphism group of the quantum grassmannian in the case that the deformation parameter is not a root of unity. The main tool employed is the dehomogenisation equality which shows that a localisation of the quantum grassmannian is equal to a skew Laurent extension of quantum matrices. This equality is used to connect the automorphism group of the quantum grassmannian with that of quantum matrices, where the automorphism group is known.

Abstract:We develop an equivariant theory of graphs with respect to quantum symmetries and present a detailed exposition of various examples. We portray unitary tensor categories as a unifying framework encompassing all finite classical simple graphs, (quantum) Cayley graphs of finite (quantum) groupoids, and all finite-dimensional quantum graphs. We model a quantum set by a finite-index inclusion of C*-algebras and use the quantum Fourier transform to obtain all possible adjacency operators. In particular, we show every finite-index subfactor can be regarded as a complete quantum graph and describe how to find all its subgraphs. As applications, we prove a version of Frucht's Theorem for finite quantum groupoids, and introduce a version of path spaces for quantum graphs.

Quantum symmetries of Hadamard matrices

Abstract:We define quantum automorphisms and isomorphisms of Hadamard matrices. We show that every Hadamard matrix of size $N\ge 4$ has quantum symmetries and that all Hadamard matrices of a fixed size are mutually quantum isomorphic. These results pass also to the corresponding Hadamard graphs. We also define quantum Hadamard matrices acting on quantum spaces and bring an example thereof over matrix algebras.

Abstract:We clarify the correspondence between the two approaches to quantum graphs: via quantum adjacency matrices and via quantum relations. We show how the choice of a (possibly non-tracial) weight manifests itself on the quantum relation side and suggest an extension of the theory of quantum graphs to the infinite dimensional case. Then we use this framework to introduce quantum graphs associated to discrete quantum groups, leading to a new definition of a quantum Cayley graph.
