Abstract:Rare earth (RE) elements serve as excellent modifiers for nonmetallic inclusions that inevitably appear in steel and significantly influence its properties. This study employed Thermo-Calc software to determine the evolution law of inclusions following Ce addition in M50NiL steel. The calculation results show that among O, S, and Al, O had a more pronounced influence on inclusion species and content. Moreover, the precipitation temperature of these inclusions increased as the content of impurity elements increased. In M50NiL steel, inclusions evolve as follows: M → M + Ce2O2S → M + Ce2O2S + Ce2O3 → Ce2O2S + Ce2O3 or M → M + Ce2O2S → M + Ce2O2S + Ce2S3 → Ce2O2S + CeS (M represents inclusions without Ce) with Ce increase. The evolutionary path of inclusions was influenced by the relative O and S contents. The study determined that the equation w(O)/w(S) = 1 (the mass ratio of total O to S) can be used as a critical condition for predicting and controlling the types of final stable Ce inclusions with Ce increase. This prediction condition was also validated for various steel grades using reported experimental results and is applicable when Ce is replaced with other RE elements.
