Abstract:We study the 38-atom Lennard-Jones cluster with parallel tempering Monte Carlo methods in the microcanonical and molecular dynamics ensembles. A new Monte Carlo algorithm is presented that samples rigorously the molecular dynamics ensemble for a system at constant total energy, linear and angular momenta. By combining the parallel tempering technique with molecular dynamics methods, we develop a hybrid method to overcome quasi-ergodicity and to extract both equilibrium and dynamical properties from Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations. Several thermodynamic, structural and dynamical properties are investigated for LJ$_{38}$, including the caloric curve, the diffusion constant and the largest Lyapunov exponent. The importance of insuring ergodicity in molecular dynamics simulations is illustrated by comparing the results of ergodic simulations with earlier molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:We analyze the behavior of the microcanonical and canonical caloric curves for a piecewise model of the configurational density of states of simple solids in the context of melting from the superheated state, as realized numerically in the Z-method via atomistic molecular dynamics. A first-order phase transition with metastable regions is reproduced by the model, being therefore useful to describe aspects of the melting transition. Within this model, transcendental equations connecting the superheating limit, the melting point, and the specific heat of each phase are presented and numerically solved. Our results suggest that the essential elements of the microcanonical Z curves can be extracted from simple modeling of the configurational density of states.

Phase Transition in Liquid Drop Fragmentation

Abstract:A liquid droplet is fragmented by a sudden pressurized-gas blow, and the resulting droplets, adhered to the window of a flatbed scanner, are counted and sized by computerized means. The use of a scanner plus image recognition software enables us to automatically count and size up to tens of thousands of tiny droplets with a smallest detectable volume of approximately 0.02 nl. Upon varying the gas pressure, a critical value is found where the size-distribution becomes a pure power-law, a fact that is indicative of a phase transition. Away from this transition, the resulting size distributions are well described by Fisher's model at coexistence. It is found that the sign of the surface correction term changes sign, and the apparent power-law exponent tau has a steep minimum, at criticality, as previously reported in Nuclear Multifragmentation studies [1,2]. We argue that the observed transition is not percolative, and introduce the concept of dominance in order to characterize it. The dominance probability is found to go to zero sharply at the transition. Simple arguments suggest that the correlation length exponent is nu=1/2. The sizes of the largest and average fragments, on the other hand, do not go to zero but behave in a way that appears to be consistent with recent predictions of Ashurst and Holian [3,4].

Glass transitions in 1, 2, 3, and 4 dimensional binary Lennard-Jones systems

Abstract:We investigate the calorimetric liquid-glass transition by performing simulations of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture in one through four dimensions. Starting at a high temperature, the systems are cooled to T=0 and heated back to the ergodic liquid state at constant rates. Glass transitions are observed in two, three and four dimensions as a hysteresis between the cooling and heating curves. This hysteresis appears in the energy and pressure diagrams, and the scanning-rate dependence of the area and height of the hysteresis can be described by power laws. The one dimensional system does not experience a glass transition but its specific heat curve resembles the shape of the $D\geq 2$ results in the supercooled liquid regime above the glass transition. As $D$ increases, the radial distribution functions reflect reduced geometric constraints. Nearest-neighbor distances become smaller with increasing $D$ due to interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbors. Simulation data for the glasses are compared with crystal and melting data obtained with a Lennard-Jones system with only one type of particle and we find that with increasing $D$ crystallization becomes increasingly more difficult.

Abstract:A novel experimental scheme has been developed in order to measure the heat capacity of mass selected clusters. It is based on controlled sticking of atoms on clusters. This allows one to construct the caloric curve, thus determining the melting temperature and the latent heat of fusion in the case of first-order phase transitions. This method is model-free. It is transferable to many systems since the energy is brought to clusters through sticking collisions. As an example, it has been applied to Na\_90\^+ and Na\_140\^+. Our results are in good agreement with previous measurements.
Symmetry breaking in two dimensions on ultra-fast time scales

Abstract:Melting of two-dimensional mono-crystals is described within the celebrated Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young scenario (KTHNY-Theory) by the dissociation of topological defects. It describes the shielding of elasticity due to thermally activated topological defects until shear elasticity disappears. As a well defined continuous phase transition, freezing and melting should be reversible and independent of history. However, this is not the case: cooling an isotropic 2D fluid with a finite but nonzero rate does not end in mono-crystals. The symmetry can not be broken globally but only locally in the thermodynamic limit due to the critical slowing down of order parameter fluctuations. This results in finite sized domains with the same order parameter. For linear cooling rates, the domain size is described by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, originally developed for the defect formation of the primordial Higgs-field shortly after the Big-Bang. In the present manuscript, we investigate the limit of the deepest descent quench on a colloidal monolayer and resolve the time dependence of structure formation for (local) symmetry breaking. Quenching to various target temperatures below the melting point (deep in the crystalline phase and just close to the transition), we find universal behaviour if the timescale is re-scaled properly.

Abstract:Systems featuring hard-core–soft-shell repulsive pair potentials can form ordered phases, where particles organize themselves in aggregates with nontrivial geometries. The dimer crystal formed by one such potential, namely, the hard-core plus generalized exponential model of order 4, has been recently investigated, revealing a low-temperature structural phase transition, with the onset of nematic ordering of the dimers. In the present work, we aim to characterize this phase transition via a mean-field theory, by which a detailed analysis of the low-temperature properties of the system is carried out under quadrupole approximation. We determine the transition temperature and identify its order parameter, highlighting the link between the structural transition and the nematic ordering of the system. The first-order character of the transition is established and supported by the Landau expansion of the free energy in powers of the order parameter. The theory is subsequently generalized to take into account lattice vibrations and dimer length fluctuations. Finally, we provide an explanation for the anomalous behavior displayed by the specific heat in the vanishing-temperature limit, which is also supported by Monte Carlo simulations. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.034128 ©2024 American Physical Society

Caloric properties of materials near a tricritical point

Abstract:We present a mean-field study of caloric effects driven by primary and secondary fields near tricritical points, which are fields thermodynamically conjugated to the main and secondary order parameters, respectively. General features, such as critical exponents and their crossover from critical to tricritical behaviours, are studied by means of a generic free energy Landau expansion. To deal with specific materials, we propose a model that combines the Blume-Emery-Griffiths prototype to study tricritical points with the Bean-Rodbell approach to include magnetovolume effects. In this model the primary field is the magnetic field, while chemical and mechanical pressures are secondary fields. In spite of the scarcity of experimental data, we have shown that results for the La(Fe$_{x}$Si$_{1-x}$)$_{13}$ and MnSi compounds are in good agreement with our predictions. We expect that our results will motivate and guide new experimental research aiming at optimizing caloric materials.

Abstract:Abstract We follow recent developments of a finite size thermal field theoretic formalism, which is mainly relevant to the investigation of small size corrections to the thermodynamical properties of the quark-gluon plasma. In doing so, we rely on statistical mechanics and large deviation theory arguments, and investigate geometrically confined systems of infinite volume V with a finite spatial extent L . More specifically, we focus on systems in contact with a heat bath as well as on isolated ones. We find and present in detail the characteristic behaviors of a first and a second order phase transition, respectively. In the former case, we establish a connection between the phase transition and the mechanical support of the system. In the latter one, we identify a critical length L c ~( V / EL ) 1/3 , where E is the total energy of the system which is fixed. We also briefly comment on the relevance of our findings, for respectively both the Casimir experiments and the future quark-gluon plasma phenomenology.
Kinetic approach to the cluster liquid-gas transition

Abstract:The liquid-gas transition in free atomic clusters is investigated theoretically based on simple unimolecular rate theories and assuming sequential evaporations. A kinetic Monte Carlo scheme is used to compute the time-dependent properties of clusters undergoing multiple dissociations, and two possible definitions of the boiling point are proposed, relying on the cluster or gas temperature. This numerical approach is supported by molecular dynamics simulations of clusters made of sodium atoms or C60 molecules, as well as simplified rate equation.

Phase Transitions Affected by Natural and Forceful Molecular Interconversion

Abstract:If a binary liquid mixture, composed of two alternative species with equal amounts, is quenched from a high temperature to a low temperature, below the critical point of demixing, then the mixture will phase separate through a process known as spinodal decomposition. However, if the two alternative species are allowed to interconvert, either naturally (e.g. the equilibrium interconversion of enantiomers) or forcefully (e.g. via an external source of energy or matter), then the process of phase separation may drastically change. In this case, depending on the nature of interconversion, two phenomena could be observed: either phase amplification, the growth of one phase at the expense of another stable phase, or microphase separation, the formation of nongrowing (steady-state) microphase domains. In this work, we generalize the Cahn-Hilliard theory of spinodal decomposition to include molecular interconversion of species and describe the physical properties of systems undergoing either phase amplification or microphase separation. We apply the developed theory to describe the simulation results of three atomistic models which demonstrate phase amplification and/or microphase separation. We also discuss the application of our approach to phase transitions in polyamorphic liquids. Lastly, we describe the effects of fluctuations of the order parameter in the critical region on phase amplification and microphase separation.

Abstract:The specific heat capacity $c_v$ of glass formers undergoes a hysteresis when subjected to a cooling-heating cycle, with a larger $c_v$ and a more pronounced hysteresis for fragile glasses than for strong ones. Here, we show that these experimental features, including the unusually large magnitude of $c_v$ of fragile glasses, are well reproduced by kinetic Monte Carlo and equilibrium study of a distinguishable particle lattice model (DPLM) incorporating a two-state picture of particle interactions. The large $c_v$ in fragile glasses is caused by a dramatic transfer of probabilistic weight from high-energy particle interactions to low-energy ones as temperature decreases.

Emergence of two-level systems in glass formers: a kinetic Monte Carlo study

Abstract:Using a distinguishable-particle lattice model based on void-induced dynamics, we successfully reproduce the well-known linear relation between heat capacity and temperature at very low temperatures. The heat capacity is dominated by two-level systems formed due to the strong localization of voids to two neighboring sites, and can be exactly calculated in the limit of ultrastable glasses. Similar but weaker localization at higher temperatures accounts for the glass transition. The result supports the conventional two-level tunneling picture by revealing how two-level systems emerge from random particle interactions, which also cause the glass transition. Our approach provides a unified framework for relating microscopic dynamics of glasses at room and cryogenic temperatures.

Free Cooling Phase-Diagram of Hard-Spheres with Short- and Long-Range Interactions

Abstract:We study the stability, the clustering and the phase-diagram of free cooling granular gases. The systems consist of mono-disperse particles with additional non-contact (long-range) interactions, and are simulated here by the event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm with discrete (short-range shoulders or wells) potentials (in both 2D and 3D). Astonishingly good agreement is found with a mean field theory, where only the energy dissipation term is modified to account for both repulsive or attractive non-contact interactions. Attractive potentials enhance cooling and structure formation (clustering), whereas repulsive potentials reduce it, as intuition suggests. The system evolution is controlled by a single parameter: the non-contact potential strength scaled by the fluctuation kinetic energy (granular temperature). When this is small, as expected, the classical homogeneous cooling state is found. However, if the effective dissipation is strong enough, structure formation proceeds, before (in the repulsive case) non-contact forces get strong enough to undo the clustering (due to the ongoing dissipation of granular temperature). For both repulsive and attractive potentials, in the homogeneous regime, the cooling shows a universal behaviour when the (inverse) control parameter is used as evolution variable instead of time. The transition to a non-homogeneous regime, as predicted by stability analysis, is affected by both dissipation and potential strength. This can be cast into a phase diagram where the system changes with time, which leaves open many challenges for future research.

Abstract:We investigate bulk thermodynamic and microscopic structural properties of amorphous solids in the framework of the phase-field crystal (PFC) model. These are metastable states with a non-uniform density distribution having no long-range order. From extensive numerical simulations we determine the distribution of free energy density values in varying size amorphous systems and also the point-to-set correlation length, which is the radius of the largest volume of amorphous one can take while still having the particle arrangements within the volume determined by the particle ordering at the surface of the chosen volume. We find that in the thermodynamic limit, the free energy density of the amorphous tends to a value that has a slight dependence on the initial state from which it was formed -- i.e.\ it has a formation history dependence. The amorphous phase is observed to form on both sides of the liquid linear-stability limit, showing that the liquid to amorphous transition is first order, with an associated finite free energy barrier when the liquid is metastable. In our simulations this is demonstrated when noise in the initial density distribution is used to induce nucleation events from the metastable liquid. Depending on the strength of the initial noise, we observe a variety of nucleation pathways, in agreement with previous results for the PFC model, and which show that amorphous precursor mediated multi-step crystal nucleation can occur in colloidal systems.

Abstract:The simulations on equilibrium thermodynamic properties of short homopolymer chains, 3-, 4-, and 5-mer, by multicanonical Monte Carlo in a three-dimensional off-lattice model are quantitatively coincident with the exact analytical results of recently reported by Taylor [J. Chem. Phys. 114, 6472 (2001)], indicating that multicanonical algorithm is a permitted method in overcoming nonergodicity in observation of freezing transitions of single macromolecular chains. The investigation of freezing transition behaviors of 5-mer chains at ultralow temperatures reveals that four isomers coexist in the liquid state, then freeze into one of four isomers in the solid state depending on the bond length and bond fluctuation of the chain model after the occurrence of a liquid-to-solid-like first-order transition.

Abstract:We study a binary Lennard-Jones system below the glass transition with molecular dynamics simulations. To investigate the dynamics we focus on events (jumps) where a particle escapes the cage formed by its neighbors. Using single particle trajectories we define a jump by comparing for each particle its fluctuations with its changes in average position. We find two kinds of jumps: "reversible jumps," where a particle jumps back and forth between two or more average positions, and "irreversible jumps," where a particle does not return to any of its former average positions, i.e., successfully escapes its cage. For all investigated temperatures both kinds of particles jump and both irreversible and reversible jumps occur. With increasing temperature, relaxation is enhanced by an increasing number of jumps and growing jump lengths in position and potential energy. However, the waiting time between two successive jumps is independent of temperature. This temperature independence might be due to aging, which is present in our system. We therefore also present a comparison of simulation data with three different histories. The ratio of irreversible to reversible jumps is also increasing with increasing temperature, which we interpret as a consequence of the increased likelihood of changes in the cages, i.e., a blocking of the "entrance" back into the previous cage. In accordance with this interpretation, the fluctuations both in position and energy are increasing with increasing temperature. A comparison of the fluctuations of jumping particles and nonjumping particles indicates that jumping particles are more mobile even when not jumping. The jumps in energy normalized by their fluctuations are decreasing with increasing temperature, which is consistent with relaxation being increasingly driven by thermal fluctuations. In accordance with subdiffusive behavior are the distributions of waiting times and jump lengths in position.

Landau Theory of Barocaloric Plastic Crystals

Abstract:We present a minimal Landau theory of plastic-to-crystal phase transitions in which the key components are a multipole-moment order parameter that describes the orientational ordering of the constituent molecules, coupling between such order parameter and elastic strains, and thermal expansion. We illustrate the theory with the simplest non-trivial model in which the orientational ordering is described by a quadrupole moment, and use such model to calculate barocaloric effects in plastic crystals that are driven by hydrostatic pressure. The model captures characteristic features of plastic-to-crystal phase transitions, namely, large changes in volume and entropy at the transition, as well as the linear dependence of the transition temperature with pressure. We identify temperature regions in the barocaloric response associated with the individual plastic and crystal phases, and those involving the phase transition. Our model is in overall agreement with previous experiments in powdered samples of fullerite C$_{60}$, and predicts peak isothermal entropy changes of $\sim90 \,{\rm J K^{-1} kg^{-1}}$ and peak adiabatic temperature changes of $\sim35 \,{\rm K}$ under $0.60\,$GPa at $265\,$K in fullerite single crystals.

Abstract:We study a d-dimensional lattice model of diffusing coalescing massive particles, with two parameters controlling deposition and evaporation of monomers. The unique stationary distribution for the system exhibits a phase transition in all dimensions d greater or equal to one between a growing phase, in which the expected mass is infinite at each site, and an exponential phase in which the expected mass is finite. We establish rigorous upper and lower bounds on the critical curve describing the phase transition for this system, and some asymptotics for large or small deposition rates.
