Abstract:This note is concerned with the connections between the conformal group and the quantum states of photons. It is shown that there exist analogies between the photonic quantum states and the conformal group, namely, the time-development operator (with a free Hamiltonian), displacement and squeezing operators of the vacuum state corresponds to the dilatation, translation, proper Lorentz transformations, respectively, and that the three quantum states of photons ({\it i.e.}, Fock state, coherent state and squeezed state) in quantum optics thus bear some analogy to the above three transformations in the conformal group. Based on this comparison, we argue by analogy that if the phase transformation operators acting on a vacuum state (hence the Fock state, coherent state and squeezed state are generated) are truly exactly analogous to the conformal transformations, then a fourth quantum state of photons (referred to as the {\it conformal state}), which corresponds to the {\it special conformal} transformation (acceleration transformation) and will therefore be of special physical interest, can be suggested.

Abstract:We show that a theory of com plex scattering between many‐body (Fock) states can be constructed such that its classical limit is a canonical transformation thus encoding quantum interference in the semiclassical form of the associated unitary operator. Based on this idea, we study the different coherent effects expected under different choices of the many‐body states and provide different representations of the associated transition probabilities. In this way, we derive exact relations and representations of the scattering process that can be used to attack timely problems related with Boson Sampling. image

Abstract:The notion of a coherent space is a nonlinear version of the notion of a complex Euclidean space: The vector space axioms are dropped while the notion of inner product is kept. Coherent spaces provide a setting for the study of geometry in a different direction than traditional metric, topological, and differential geometry. Just as it pays to study the properties of manifolds independently of their embedding into a Euclidean space, so it appears fruitful to study the properties of coherent spaces independent of their embedding into a Hilbert space. Coherent spaces have close relations to reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, Fock spaces, and unitary group representations, and to many other fields of mathematics, statistics, and physics. This paper is the first of a series of papers and defines concepts and basic theorems about coherent spaces, associated vector spaces, and their topology. Later papers in the series discuss symmetries of coherent spaces, relations to homogeneous spaces, the theory of group representations, $C^*$-algebras, hypergroups, finite geometry, and applications to quantum physics. While the applications to quantum physics were the main motiviation for developing the theory, many more applications exist in complex analysis, group theory, probability theory, statistics, physics, and engineering.
Canonical transformations: from the coordinate based approach to the geometric one

Abstract:In this paper the theory of time-dependent and time-independent canonical transformations is considered from a geometric perspective. Both the geometric formalism and the coordinate based approach are described in detail. In particular, one-parameter groups of canonical transformations are geometrically identified with flows of Hamiltonian vector fields which, in turn, are their infinitesimal generators. Likewise, infinitesimal generators of invariance transformations are geometrically characterized. The main results are established in the form of theorems and the connection between the geometric and the coordinate based frameworks is remarked using concrete examples.

Abstract:Coherent-state representations are a standard tool to deal with continuous-variable systems, as they allow one to efficiently visualize quantum states in phase space. Here, we work out an alternative basis consisting of monomials on the basic observables, with the crucial property of behaving well under symplectic transformations. This basis is the analogue of the irreducible tensors widely used in the context of SU(2) symmetry. Given the density matrix of a state, the expansion coefficients in that basis constitute the multipoles, which describe the state in a canonically covariant form that is both concise and explicit. We use these quantities to assess properties such as quantumness or Gaussianity and to furnish direct connections between tomographic measurements and quasiprobability distribution reconstructions.

Abstract:Quantum canonical transformations are defined in analogy to classical canonical transformations as changes of the phase space variables which preserve the Dirac bracket structure. In themselves, they are neither unitary nor non-unitary. A definition of quantum integrability in terms of canonical transformations is proposed which includes systems which have fewer commuting integrals of motion than degrees of freedom. The important role of non-unitary transformations in integrability is discussed.

Abstract:This paper studies coherent quantization, the way operators in the quantum space of a coherent space—defined in the recent book 'Coherent Quantum Mechanics' by the first author—can be studied in terms of objects defined directly on the coherent space. The results may be viewed as a generalization of geometric quantization, including the non-unitary case. Care has been taken to work with the weakest meaningful topology and to assume as little as possible about the spaces and groups involved. Unlike in geometric quantization, the groups are not assumed to be compact, locally compact, or finite-dimensional. This implies that the setting can be successfully applied to quantum field theory, where the groups involved satisfy none of these properties. The paper characterizes linear operators acting on the quantum space of a coherent space in terms of their coherent matrix elements. Coherent maps and associated symmetry groups for coherent spaces are introduced, and formulas are derived for the quantization of coherent maps. The importance of coherent maps for quantum mechanics is due to the fact that there is a quantization map that associates homomorphically with every coherent map a linear operator from the quantum space into itself. The quantization map generalizes the second quantization procedure for free classical fields to symmetry groups of general coherent spaces. Field quantization is obtained by specialization to Klauder spaces, whose quantum spaces are the bosonic Fock spaces. Implied by the new approach is a short, coordinate-free derivation of all basic properties of creation and annihilation operators in Fock spaces.

Ultra-quantum coherent states in a single finite quantum system

Abstract:A set of $n$ coherent states is introduced in a quantum system with $d$-dimensional Hilbert space $H(d)$. It is shown that they resolve the identity, and also have a discrete isotropy property. A finite cyclic group acts on the set of these coherent states, and partitions it into orbits. A $n$-tuple representation of arbitrary states in $H(d)$, analogous to the Bargmann representation, is defined. There are two other important properties of these coherent states which make them `ultra-quantum'. The first property is related to the Grothendieck formalism which studies the `edge' of the Hilbert space and quantum formalisms. Roughly speaking the Grothendieck theorem considers a `classical' quadratic form ${\mathfrak C}$ that uses complex numbers in the unit disc, and a `quantum' quadratic form ${\mathfrak Q}$ that uses vectors in the unit ball of the Hilbert space. It shows that if ${\mathfrak C}\le 1$, the corresponding ${\mathfrak Q}$ might take values greater than $1$, up to the complex Grothendieck constant $k_G$. ${\mathfrak Q}$ related to these coherent states is shown to take values in the `Grothendieck region' $(1,k_G)$, which is classically forbidden in the sense that ${\mathfrak C}$ does not take values in it. The second property complements this, showing that these coherent states violate logical Bell-like inequalities (which for a single quantum system are quantum versions of the Frechet probabilistic inequalities). In this sense also, our coherent states are deep into the quantum region.

Abstract:We derive unitary-operator images corresponding to classical phase-space symplectic transformations in the n-mode canonical coherent-state representation. The evaluation can be greatly facilitated by the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators, showing clearly the connection between symplectic transformations and the corresponding normally ordered unitary operators. Application of these operators results in the construction of generalized coherent states.

Abstract:The normally ordered Hilbert space image of the general (complex) linear similarity transformation in phase space is obtained in coherent state representation. Although preserving the commutator of a and a dagger, these quantum mechanical images of classical transformations are generally not urinary. Remarkably, although the kets and bras produced by the non-unitary similarity transformations are not Hermitian conjugates, squeezed state analogues produced using the similarity transformation still satisfy an overcompleteness relation. The results are extended to two-mode Fock space and simple examples of the utility of the similarity transformation are presented. The evaluation of the normally ordered operators is greatly facilitated by the use of integration within ordered products.

Abstract:We discuss canonical transformations in Quantum Field Theory in the framework of the functional-integral approach. In contrast with ordinary Quantum Mechanics, canonical transformations in Quantum Field Theory are mathematically more subtle due to the existence of unitarily inequivalent representations of canonical commutation relations. When one works with functional integrals, it is not immediately clear how this algebraic feature manifests itself in the formalism. Here we attack this issue by considering the canonical transformations in the context of coherent-state functional integrals. Specifically, in the case of linear canonical transformations, we derive the general functional-integral representations for both transition amplitude and partition function phrased in terms of new canonical variables. By means of this, we show how in the infinite-volume limit the canonical transformations induce a transition from one representation of canonical commutation relations to another one and under what conditions the representations are unitarily inequivalent. We also consider the partition function and derive the energy gap between statistical systems described in two different representations which, among others, allows to establish a connection with continuous phase transitions. We illustrate the inner workings of the outlined mechanism by discussing two prototypical systems: the van Hove model and the Bogoliubov model of weakly interacting Bose gas.

Abstract:We study the transformation between quantum states under incoherent operations and unitary incoherent operations. In high dimensional systems, we show any two pure states can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations if and only if they can be transformed into each other under unitary incoherent operations. For mixed states, we show any two incoherent states can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations. Furthermore, we show any incoherent states can be transformed by any mixed states under incoherent operations. In qubit systems, we prove the necessary and sufficient condition for the transformation between any two mixed states by incoherent operations alternatively and obtain the corresponding incoherent operations. Moreover we prove any two mixed qubit states with nonzero coherence can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations if and only if they can be transformed into each other under unitary incoherent operations.

Abstract:This paper presents the general theory of canonical transformations of coordinates in quantum mechanics. First, the theory is developed in the formalism of phase space quantum mechanics. It is shown that by transforming a star-product, when passing to a new coordinate system, observables and states transform as in classical mechanics, i.e., by composing them with a transformation of coordinates. Then the developed formalism of coordinate transformations is transferred to a standard formulation of quantum mechanics. In addition, the developed theory is illustrated on examples of particular classes of quantum canonical transformations.

Abstract:The pure spinor superfield formalism reveals that, in any dimension and with any amount of supersymmetry, one particular supermultiplet is distinguished from all others. This "canonical supermultiplet" is equipped with an additional structure that is not apparent in any component-field formalism: a (homotopy) commutative algebra structure on the space of fields. The structure is physically relevant in several ways; it is responsible for the interactions in ten-dimensional super Yang–Mills theory, as well as crucial to any first-quantised interpretation. We study the algebra structure that is Koszul dual to this commutative algebra, both in general and in numerous examples, and prove that it is equivalent to the subalgebra of the Koszul dual to functions on the space of generalised pure spinors in internal degree greater than or equal to three. In many examples, the latter is the positive part of a Borcherds–Kac–Moody superalgebra. Using this result, we can interpret the canonical multiplet as the homotopy fiber of the map from generalised pure spinor space to its derived replacement. This generalises and extends work of Movshev–Schwarz and Gálvez–Gorbounov–Shaikh–Tonks in the same spirit. We also comment on some issues with physical interpretations of the canonical multiplet, which are illustrated by an example related to the complex Cayley plane, and on possible extensions of our construction, which appear relevant in an example with symmetry type .

Abstract:Canonical transformation plays a fundamental role in simplifying and solving classical Hamiltonian systems. We construct flexible and powerful canonical transformations as generative models using symplectic neural networks. The model transforms physical variables towards a latent representation with an independent harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. Correspondingly, the phase space density of the physical system flows towards a factorized Gaussian distribution in the latent space. Since the canonical transformation preserves the Hamiltonian evolution, the model captures nonlinear collective modes in the learned latent representation. We present an efficient implementation of symplectic neural coordinate transformations and two ways to train the model. The variational free energy calculation is based on the analytical form of physical Hamiltonian. While the phase space density estimation only requires samples in the coordinate space for separable Hamiltonians. We demonstrate appealing features of neural canonical transformation using toy problems including two-dimensional ring potential and harmonic chain. Finally, we apply the approach to real-world problems such as identifying slow collective modes in alanine dipeptide and conceptual compression of the MNIST dataset.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a homotopical framework for studying invertible gapped phases of matter from the point of view of infinite spin lattice systems, using the framework of algebraic quantum mechanics. We define the notion of quantum state types. These are certain lax-monoidal functors from the category of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces to the category of topological spaces. The universal example takes a finite dimensional Hilbert space to the pure state space of the quasi-local algebra of the quantum spin system with this Hilbert space at each site of a specified lattice. The lax-monoidal structure encodes the tensor product of states, which corresponds to stacking for quantum systems. We then explain how to formally extract parametrized phases of matter from quantum state types, and how they naturally give rise to $\mathscr{E}_\infty$-spaces for an operad we call the "multiplicative" linear isometry operad. We define the notion of invertible quantum state types and explain how the passage to phases for these is related to group completion. We also explain how invertible quantum state types give rise to loop-spectra. Our motivation is to provide a framework for constructing Kitaev's loop-spectrum of bosonic invertible gapped phases of matter. Finally, as a first step towards understanding the homotopy types of the loop-spectra associated to invertible quantum state types, we prove that the pure state space of any UHF algebra is simply connected.

Abstract:The physical meaning of the particularly simple non-degenerate supermetric, introduced in the previous part by the authors, is elucidated and the possible connection with processes of topological origin in high energy physics is analyzed and discussed. New possible mechanism of the localization of the fields in a particular sector of the supermanifold is proposed and the similarity and differences with a 5-dimensional warped model are shown. The relation with gauge theories of supergravity based in the $OSP(1/4)$ group is explicitly given and the possible original action is presented. We also show that in this non-degenerate super-model the physic states, in contrast with the basic states, are observables and can be interpreted as tomographic projections or generalized representations of operators belonging to the metaplectic group $Mp(2)$. The advantage of geometrical formulations based on non-degenerate super-manifolds over degenerate ones is pointed out and the description and the analysis of some interesting aspects of the simplest Riemannian superspaces are presented from the point of view of the possible vacuum solutions.

Abstract:We provide a group theory approach to coherent states describing quantum space-time and its properties. This provides a relativistic framework for the metric of a Riemmanian space with bosonic and fermionic coordinates, its continuum and discrete states, and a kind of {\it"quantum optics"} for the space-time. {\bf New} results of this paper are: (i) The space-time is described as a physical coherent state of the complete covering of the SL(2C) group, eg the Metaplectic group Mp(n). (ii) (The discrete structure arises from its two irreducible: $\textit{even}$ $(2n)$ and $\textit{odd}$ $(2n\;+\;1)\;$ representations, ($n = 1,\, 2, \,3\,...$ ), spanning the complete Hilbert space $\mathcal{H} = \mathcal{H}_{odd}\oplus \mathcal{H}_{even}$. Such a global or {\it complete} covering guarantees the CPT symmetry and unitarity. Large $n$ yields the classical and continuum manifold, as it must be. (iii) The coherent and squeezed states and Wigner functions of quantum-space-time for black holes and de Sitter, and (iv) for the quantum space-imaginary time (instantons), black holes in particular. They encompass the semiclassical space-time behaviour plus high quantum phase oscillations, and notably account for the classical-quantum gravity duality and trans-Planckian domain. The Planck scale consistently corresponds to the coherent state eigenvalue $\alpha = 0$ (and to the $n = 0$ level in the discrete representation). It is remarkable the power of coherent states in describing both continuum and discrete space-time. The quantum space-time description is {\it regular}, there is no any space-time singularity here, as it must be.

Abstract:By means of the complex Clifford algebra, a new realization of multi-dimensional semiunitary transformation is put forward and then applied to studying the isospectrality of nonrelativistic Hamiltonians of multi-dimensional quantum mechanical systems, in which the generalized Pauli coupling interaction and spin-orbit coupling interaction appear naturally. Moreover, it is shown that the semiunitary operators, together with the Hamiltonian of quantum mechanical system, satisfy the polynomially-deformed angular momentum algebra.
