Abstract:We prove Artin's axioms satisfy a compatibility for composition of 1-morphisms of stacks in groupoids. Consequently, some natural stacks in groupoids are algebraic, including a common generalization of Vistoli's Hilbert stack and the stack of branchvarieties of Alexeev and Knutson.

Abstract:We explain how any Artin stack $\mathfrak{X}$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ extends to a functor on non-negatively graded commutative cochain algebras, which we think of as functions on Lie algebroids or stacky affine schemes. There is a notion of étale morphisms for these CDGAs, and Artin stacks admit étale atlases by stacky affines, giving rise to a small étale site of stacky affines over $\mathfrak{X}$. This site has the same quasi-coherent sheaves as $\mathfrak{X}$ and leads to efficient formulations of shifted Poisson structures, differential operators and quantisations for Artin stacks. There are generalisations to higher and derived stacks. We also describe analogues for differentiable and analytic stacks; in particular, a Lie groupoid naturally gives a functor on NQ-manifolds which we can use to transfer structures. In those settings, local diffeomorphisms and biholomorphisms are the analogues of étale morphisms. This note mostly elaborates constructions scattered across several of the author's papers, but with an emphasis on the functor of points perspective. New results include consistency checks showing that the induced notions of structures such as vector bundles or torsors on a stacky affine scheme coincide with familiar definitions in terms of flat connections.

Generalized local jacobians and commutative group stacks

Abstract:In [CS01, Page 109] Grothendieck sketches the construction of a complex J_*(X) or commutative pro-algebraic groups, associated to a smooth variety X, and for which each J_i(X) is a product of local factors called the local generalized jacobians. The purpose of this note is to recast this construction in the setting of higher algebraic group stacks for the fppf topology. For this, we introduce a notion of algebraic homology associated to a scheme which is a universal object computing fppf cohomology with coefficients in group schemes. We endow this algebraic homology with a filtration by dimension of supports, and prove that, when X is smooth, J_*(X) appears as the E1-page of the corresponding spectral sequence. In a final part we partially extends our constructions and results over arbitrary bases.

Abstract:We give a variant of Artin algebraization along closed subschemes and closed substacks. Our main application is the existence of étale, smooth or syntomic neighborhoods of closed subschemes and closed substacks. In particular, we prove local structure theorems for stacks and their derived counterparts and the existence of henselizations along linearly fundamental closed substacks. These results establish the existence of Ferrand pushouts, which answers positively a question of Temkin–Tyomkin.

Homomorphisms between large-type Artin groups

Abstract:In this article, we study homomorphisms between Artin groups that belong to two generic classes. For XL-type Artin groups over complete graphs, we describe all possible homomorphisms with sufficiently large image, and prove in particular that such groups are both hopfian and co-hopfian. For Artin groups with all labels at least $6$, we completely characterise in terms of the presentation graph when these groups have a finite outer automorphism group, as well as when they are co-hopfian. Moreover, when the presentation graph has no cut-vertex, we provide a generating set for their automorphism group.

Complex algebraic stacks and morphisms of intersection complexes

Abstract:We generalize a construction of Barthel-Brasselet-Fieseler-Gabber-Kaup in the setting of complex varieties to the setting of finite type, complex algebraic stacks. Given two such stacks $\mathcal{X},\mathcal{Y}$ with affine stabilizers, and a morphism between them, we construct a morphism from the pullback of the intersection complex of $\mathcal{Y}$ to the intersection complex of $\mathcal{X}$. As an application, we show that the Borel-Moore fundamental class of a closed substack $\mathcal{Z}$ in a Deligne-Mumford stack $\mathcal{X}$ lifts to a class in the intersection cohomology of $\mathcal{X}$.

Generalized cohomology theories for algebraic stacks

Abstract:We extend the stable motivic homotopy category of Voevodsky to the class of scalloped algebraic stacks, and show that it admits the formalism of Grothendieck's six operations. Objects in this category represent generalized cohomology theories for stacks like algebraic K-theory, as well as new examples like genuine motivic cohomology and algebraic cobordism. These cohomology theories admit Gysin maps and satisfy homotopy invariance, localization, and Mayer-Vietoris. For example, we deduce that homotopy K-theory satisfies cdh descent on scalloped stacks. We also prove a fixed point localization formula for torus actions. Finally, the construction is contrasted with a "lisse-extended" stable motivic homotopy category, defined for arbitrary stacks: we show for example that lisse-extended motivic cohomology of quotient stacks is computed by the equivariant higher Chow groups of Edidin-Graham, and we also get a good new theory of Borel-equivariant algebraic cobordism. Moreover, the lisse-extended motivic homotopy type is shown to recover all previous constructions of motives of stacks.

Coherently complete algebraic stacks in positive characteristic

Abstract:With the long-term goal of proving local structure theorems of algebraic stacks in positive characteristic near points with reductive (but possibly non-linearly reductive) stabilizer, we conjecture that quotient stacks of the form $[\mathrm{Spec}\, A/G]$, with $G$ reductive and $A^G$ complete local, are coherently complete along the unique closed point. We establish this conjecture in two interesting cases: (1) $A^G$ is artinian and (2) $G$ acts trivially on $\mathrm{Spec}\, A$. We also establish coherent completeness results for graded unipotent group actions. In order to establish these results, we prove a number of foundational statements concerning cohomological and completeness properties of algebraic stacks -- including on how these properties ascend and descend along morphisms.

Short hierarchically hyperbolic groups II: quotients and the Hopf property for Artin groups

Abstract:We prove that most Artin groups of large and hyperbolic type are Hopfian, meaning that every self-epimorphism is an isomorphism. The class covered by our result is generic, in the sense of Goldsborough-Vaskou. Moreover, assuming the residual finiteness of certain hyperbolic groups with an explicit presentation, we get that all large and hyperbolic type Artin groups are residually finite. We also show that most quotients of the five-holed sphere mapping class group are hierarchically hyperbolic, up to taking powers of the normal generators of the kernels. The main tool we use to prove both results is a Dehn-filling-like procedure for short hierarchically hyperbolic groups (these also include e.g. non-geometric 3-manifolds, and triangle- and square-free RAAGs).

Abstract:Abstract We use Hodge theoretic methods to study homotopy types of complex projective manifolds with arbitrary fundamental groups. The main tool we use is the schematization functor $X \mapsto (X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ , introduced by the third author as a substitute for the rationalization functor in homotopy theory in the case of non-simply connected spaces. Our main result is the construction of a Hodge decomposition on $(X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ . This Hodge decomposition is encoded in an action of the discrete group $\mathbb {C}^{\times \delta }$ on the object $(X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ and is shown to recover the usual Hodge decomposition on cohomology, the Hodge filtration on the pro-algebraic fundamental group, and, in the simply connected case, the Hodge decomposition on the complexified homotopy groups. We show that our Hodge decomposition satisfies a purity property with respect to a weight filtration, generalizing the fact that the higher homotopy groups of a simply connected projective manifold have natural mixed Hodge structures. As applications we construct new examples of homotopy types which are not realizable as complex projective manifolds and we prove a formality theorem for the schematization of a complex projective manifold.

Abstract:We extend our previous classification of stacky curves in positive characteristic using higher ramification data and Artin-Schreier-Witt theory. The main new technical tool introduced is the Artin-Schreier-Witt root stack, a generalization of root stacks to the wildly ramified setting. We then apply our wild Riemann-Hurwitz theorem for stacks to compute the canonical rings of some wild stacky curves.

Abstract:We prove the conjectures of Hodge and Tate for any four-dimensional hyper-Kähler variety of generalized Kummer type. For an arbitrary variety $X$ of generalized Kummer type, we show that all Hodge classes in the subalgebra of the rational cohomology generated by $H^2(X,\mathbb{Q})$ are algebraic.

Abstract:We construct the étale motivic Borel-Moore homology of derived Artin stacks. Using a derived version of the intrinsic normal cone, we construct fundamental classes of quasi-smooth derived Artin stacks and demonstrate functoriality, base change, excess intersection, and Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formulas. These classes also satisfy a general cohomological Bézout theorem which holds without any transversity hypotheses. The construction is new even for classical stacks and as one application we extend Gabber's proof of the absolute purity conjecture to Artin stacks.

Abstract:We generalize Illusie's definition of the Atiyah class to complexes with quasi-coherent cohomology on arbitrary algebraic stacks. We show that this gives a global obstruction theory for moduli stacks of complexes in algebraic geometry without derived methods. We give a similar generalization of the reduced Atiyah class, and we show various useful properties for working with Atiyah classes, such as compatibilities between the reduced and ordinary Atiyah class, and compatibility with tensor products and determinants.

Abstract:In part I of this work we studied the spaces of real algebraic cycles on a complex projective space P(V), where V carries a real structure, and completely determined their homotopy type. We also extended some functors in K-theory to algebraic cycles, establishing a direct relationship to characteristic classes for the classical groups, specially Stiefel-Whitney classes. In this sequel, we establish corresponding results in the case where V has a quaternionic structure. The determination of the homotopy type of quaternionic algebraic cycles is more involved than in the real case, but has a similarly simple description. The stabilized space of quaternionic algebraic cycles admits a nontrivial infinite loop space structure yielding, in particular, a delooping of the total Pontrjagin class map. This stabilized space is directly related to an extended notion of quaternionic spaces and bundles (KH-theory), in analogy with Atiyah's real spaces and KR-theory, and the characteristic classes that we introduce for these objects are nontrivial. The paper ends with various examples and applications.
