Abstract:Let $G$ be a generically reductive group over a smooth projective curve $X$ over a finite field. For any finite set $I$, we show that nearby cycles commute with proper direct image from stacks of shtukas to $X^I$. This generalizes some results of Salmon and the authors.

Abstract:We show that under some conditions, two constructions of nearby cycles over general bases coincide. More specifically, we show that under the assumption of $\Psi$-factorizability, the constructions of unipotent nearby cycles over an affine space can be described using the theory of nearby cycles over general bases via the vanishing topos. In particular, this applies to nearby cycles of Satake sheaves on Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannians with parahoric ramification.

Abstract:In this article, we prove a $p$-adic analogue of the local invariant cycle theorem for $H^2$ in mixed characteristics. As a result, for a smooth projective variety $X$ over a $p$-adic local field $K$ with a proper flat regular model $\mathcal{X}$ over $O_K$, we show that the natural map $Br(\mathcal{X})\rightarrow Br(X_{\bar{K}})^{G_K}$ has a finite kernel and a finite cokernel. And we prove that the natural map $Hom(Br(X)/Br(K)+Br(\mathcal{X}), \mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}) \rightarrow Alb_X(K)$ has a finite kernel and a finite cokernel, generalizing Lichtenbaum's duality between Brauer groups and Jacobians for curves to arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:Given a smooth scheme X with an action by an affine algebraic group G, we give a formula to compute the Nisnevich sheaf of the motivic connected components of the quotient stack [X/G] in the case of an orbifold. We apply it to identify all the $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected stacky curves and prove the $\mathbb{A}^1$ -connectedness of the moduli stack of elliptic curves. We also prove homotopy purity for the smooth algebraic stacks and recover a computation of the Picard group of stacky orbifold curves by computing their mixed motive.

Non-vanishing of Ceresa and Gross--Kudla--Schoen cycles associated to modular curves

Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field and $g \colon Y \longrightarrow X$, $f \colon X \longrightarrow \mathbb{A}_k^1$ be morphisms of quasi-projective $k$-varieties. In his thesis, Ayoub developed the theory of motivic nearby cycles functors $\Psi_{f},\Psi_{f \circ g}$. They are equipped with several base change morphisms such as $\mu_g \colon g_{\sigma!}\Psi_{f \circ g} \longrightarrow \Psi_f g_{\eta !}$, $\nu_g\colon \Psi_{f \circ g}g_{\eta}^! \longrightarrow g_{\sigma}^!\Psi_f$, which are isomorphisms if $g$ is projective and smooth, respectively. In this article, we remove the quasi-projectiveness of varieties in these base change morphisms by following a classical formulation of Deligne. As an application, we prove that the cone of $\mu_g$ is a triangulated functor. It turns out that nearby cycles at infinity constructed by Raibaut is incarnation of this cone functor.

Restricted shtukas and $Ψ$-factorizable sheaves

Abstract:We show that Lusztig's theories of two-sided cells and non-unipotent representations of a reductive group over a finite field are compatible with the V. Lafforgue's automorphic-to-galois direction of the Langlands correspondence. To do this, we extend cases where nearby cycles commutes with pushforward from sheaves on the moduli space of shtukas to a product of curves to include certain depth $0$ cases. More generally, we introduce the notion of $\Psi$-factorizability to study nearby cycles over general bases, whereby a sheaf is $\Psi$-factorizable if its nearby cycles are the same as iterated nearby cycles with respect to arbitrary compositions of specializations on the base. The Satake sheaves on Beilinson-Drinfeld grassmannians and their cohomology sheaves on curves are nontrivial examples of $\Psi$-factorizable sheaves. This notion allows us to adapt arguments from Xue. As an application, for certain automorphic forms in depth zero attached to a Langlands parameter, we characterize the image of the tame generator of this parameter in terms of semisimple orbits and two-sided cells attached to representations, extending ideas of Lusztig-Yun and Bezrukavnikov-Finkelberg-Ostrik.

Abstract:We show that the nearby cycles functor for the $p$-adic Hecke stack at parahoric level is perverse t-exact, by developing a theory of Wakimoto filtrations at Iwahori level, and that it lifts to the $\mathbb{E}_1$-center. We apply these tools to construct the Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov functor for $p$-adic affine flag varieties at Iwahori level, and prove that it is an equivalence for type $A$ groups.

Codimension one intersections between components of the Emerton-Gee stack for $\mathrm{GL}_2$

Abstract:Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime, and let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$. The Emerton-Gee stack for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ is a stack of $(\varphi, \Gamma)$-modules. The stack, denoted $\mathcal{X}_2$, can be interpreted as a moduli stack of representations of the absolute Galois group of $K$ with $p$-adic coefficients. The reduced part of the Emerton-Gee stack, denoted $\mathcal{X}_{2, \text{red}}$, is an algebraic stack defined over a finite field of characteristic $p$ and can be viewed as a moduli stack of Galois representations with mod $p$ coefficients. The irreducible components of $\mathcal{X}_{2, \text{red}}$ are labelled in a natural way by Serre weights, which are the irreducible mod $p$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O}_K)$. Each irreducible component of $\mathcal{X}_{2, \text{red}}$ has dimension $[K:\mathbb{Q}_p]$. Motivated by the conjectural categorical $p$-adic Langlands programme, we find representation-theoretic criteria for codimension one intersections of the irreducible components of $\mathcal{X}_{2, \text{red}}$. The methods involve two separate computations and a final comparison between the two. The first of these computations determines extension groups of Serre weights and the second determines all the pairs of irreducible components that intersect in codimension one. We show that a non-trivial extension of a pair of non-isomorphic Serre weights implies a codimension one intersection of the corresponding irreducible components. The converse of this statement is also true when the Serre weights are chosen to be sufficiently generic. Furthermore, we show that the number of top-dimensional components in a codimension one intersection is related to the nature of the extension group of corresponding Serre weights.

Spherical objects, transitivity and auto-equivalences of Kodaira cycles via gentle algebras

Abstract:This paper studies the class of spherical objects over any Kodaira $n$-cycle of projective lines and provides a parametrization of their isomorphism classes in terms of closed curves on the $n$-punctured torus without self-intersections. Employing recent results on gentle algebras, we derive a topological model for the bounded derived category of any Kodaira cycle. The groups of triangle auto-equivalences of these categories are computed and are shown to act transitively on isomorphism classes of spherical objects. This answers a question by Polishchuk and extends earlier results by Burban-Kreussler and Lekili-Polishchuk. The description of auto-equivalences is further used to establish faithfulness of a mapping class group action defined by Sibilla. The final part describes the closed curves which correspond to vector bundles and simple vector bundles. This leads to an alternative proof of a result by Bodnarchuk-Drozd-Greuel which states that simple vector bundles on cycles of projective lines are uniquely determined by their multi-degree, rank and determinant. As a by-product we obtain a closed formula for the cyclic sequence of any simple vector bundle on $C_n$ as introduced by Burban-Drozd-Greuel.

Coherently complete algebraic stacks in positive characteristic

Abstract:With the long-term goal of proving local structure theorems of algebraic stacks in positive characteristic near points with reductive (but possibly non-linearly reductive) stabilizer, we conjecture that quotient stacks of the form $[\mathrm{Spec}\, A/G]$, with $G$ reductive and $A^G$ complete local, are coherently complete along the unique closed point. We establish this conjecture in two interesting cases: (1) $A^G$ is artinian and (2) $G$ acts trivially on $\mathrm{Spec}\, A$. We also establish coherent completeness results for graded unipotent group actions. In order to establish these results, we prove a number of foundational statements concerning cohomological and completeness properties of algebraic stacks -- including on how these properties ascend and descend along morphisms.

Chromatic aberrations of geometric Satake over the regular locus

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected and simply-connected semisimple group over $\mathbf{C}$, let $G_c$ be a maximal compact subgroup of $G(\mathbf{C})$, and let $T$ be a maximal torus. The derived geometric Satake equivalence of Bezrukavnikov-Finkelberg localizes to an equivalence between a full subcategory of $\mathrm{Loc}_{G_c}(\Omega G_c; \mathbf{C})$ and $\mathrm{QCoh}(\check{\mathfrak{g}}^{\mathrm{reg}}[2]/\check{G})$, which can be thought of as a version of the geometric Satake equivalence "over the regular locus". In this article, we study the story when $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; \mathbf{C})$ is replaced by the $\infty$-category of $T$-equivariant local systems of $A$-modules over $\mathrm{Gr}_G(\mathbf{C})$, where $A$ is a complex-oriented even-periodic $\mathbf{E}_\infty$-ring equipped with an oriented group scheme $\mathbf{G}$. We show that upon rationalization, $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; A)$, which was studied variously by Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov-Ginzburg and Yun-Zhu when $A = \mathbf{C}[\beta^{\pm 1}]$, can be described in terms of the spectral geometry of various Langlands-dual stacks associated to $A$ and $\mathbf{G}$. For example, this implies that if $A$ is an elliptic cohomology theory with elliptic curve $E$, then $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; A) \otimes \mathbf{Q}$ can be described via the moduli stack of $\check{B}$-bundles of degree $0$ on $E^\vee$.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a (-1)-shifted symplectic derived Deligne--Mumford stack. In this paper we introduce the Darboux stack of $X$, parametrizing local presentations of $X$ as a derived critical locus of a function $f$ on a smooth formal scheme $U$. Local invariants such as the Milnor number $\mu_f$, the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles $\mathsf{P}_{U,f}$ and the category of matrix factorizations $\mathsf{MF}(U,f)$ are naturally defined on the Darboux stack, without ambiguity. The stack of non-degenerate flat quadratic bundles acts on the Darboux stack and our main theorem is the contractibility of the quotient stack when taking a further homotopy quotient identifying isotopic automorphisms. As a corollary we recover the gluing results for vanishing cycles by Brav--Bussi--Dupont--Joyce--Szendr\H oi. In a second part (to appear), we will apply this general mechanism to glue the motives of the locally defined categories of matrix factorizations $\mathsf{MF}(U,f)$ under the prescription of additional orientation data, thus answering positively conjectures by Kontsevich--Soibelman and Toda in motivic Donaldson--Thomas theory.

Abstract:We give a sufficient criterion for the Chow or algebraic bordism groups of an algebraic stack, localized at a set of Chern classes of line bundles, to be concentrated in some closed substack. This is a vast generalization of the torus fixed-point localization theorem in equivariant intersection theory, which is the special case of the stack quotient of a scheme $X$ by an action of a torus $T$. Taking on the one hand an algebraic stack in place of $X$, we deduce a generalization of torus localization to algebraic stacks. Taking on the other hand any algebraic group $G$ instead of $T$, we obtain a localization theorem in $G$-equivariant intersection theory.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth projective rational variety carrying a regular action of a finite abelian group G. We give examples of effective computation of the Brauer group of the quotient stack [X/G] in dimensions 2 and 3 using residues in Galois cohomology and the geometry of fixed loci. In particular, we compute Br([X/G]) for all G-minimal del Pezzo surfaces.

Abstract:We prove a finiteness theorem and a comparison theorem in the theory of étale cohomology of rigid analytic varieties. By a result of Huber, for a quasi-compact separated morphism of rigid analytic varieties with target being of dimension , the compactly supported higher direct image preserves quasi-constructibility. Though the analogous statement for morphisms with higher dimensional target fails in general, we prove that, in the algebraizable case, it holds after replacing the target with a modification. We deduce it from a known finiteness result in the theory of nearby cycles over general bases and a new comparison result, which gives an identification of the compactly supported higher direct image sheaves, up to modification of the target, in terms of nearby cycles over general bases.

Abstract:In [CS01, Page 109] Grothendieck sketches the construction of a complex J_*(X) or commutative pro-algebraic groups, associated to a smooth variety X, and for which each J_i(X) is a product of local factors called the local generalized jacobians. The purpose of this note is to recast this construction in the setting of higher algebraic group stacks for the fppf topology. For this, we introduce a notion of algebraic homology associated to a scheme which is a universal object computing fppf cohomology with coefficients in group schemes. We endow this algebraic homology with a filtration by dimension of supports, and prove that, when X is smooth, J_*(X) appears as the E1-page of the corresponding spectral sequence. In a final part we partially extends our constructions and results over arbitrary bases.

Hecke and Galois Properties of Special Cycles on Unitary Shimura Varieties

Abstract:We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Using methods and recent results of Koskivirta, we prove the congruence relation in this case. Finally, using the action of the local Hecke algebra on the Bruhat--Tits building, we establish explicit relations (distribution relations) between the Hecke action and the Galois action on the special cycles. These relations are key for a work in progress by the author on constructing a new Euler system from these cycles and using it to prove instances of the Bloch{Kato{ Beilinson conjecture for certain Galois representations associated to automorphic forms on unitary groups.

Abstract:Recent results in geometric invariant theory (GIT) for non-reductive linear algebraic group actions allow us to stratify quotient stacks of the form [X/H], where X is a projective scheme and H is a linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting linearly on X, in such a way that each stratum [S/H] has a geometric quotient S/H. This leads to stratifications of moduli stacks (for example, sheaves over a projective scheme) such that each stratum has a coarse moduli space.
