Abstract:Neutrino induced reactions on $^{12}$C, an ingredient of liquid scintillators, have been studied in several experiments. We show that for currently available neutrino energies, $E_{\nu} \le$ 300 MeV, calculated exclusive cross sections $^{12}$C$_{gs}(\nu,l)$$^{12}$N$_{gs}$ for both muon and electron neutrinos are essentially model independent, provided the calculations simultaneously describe the rates of several other reactions involving the same states or their isobar analogs. The calculations agree well with the measured cross sections, which can be therefore used to check the normalization of the incident neutrino spectrum and the efficiency of the detector.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the possibility that massive neutrinos are unstable due to their invisible decays ν i → ν j + φ, where ν i and ν j (for i, j = 1, 2, 3) are any two of neutrino mass eigenstates with masses m i > m i and φ is a massless Nambu-Goldstone boson, and explore the implications for the detection of cosmological relic neutrinos in the present Universe. First, we carry out a complete calculation of neutrino decay rates in the general case where the individual helicities of parent and daughter neutrinos are specified. Then, the invisible decays of cosmological relic neutrinos are studied and their impact on the capture rates on the beta-decaying nuclei (e.g., ν e + 3 H → 3 He + e - ) is analyzed. The invisible decays of massive neutrinos could substantially change the capture rates in the PTOLEMY-like experiments when compared to the case of stable neutrinos. In particular, we find that the helicity-changing decays of Dirac neutrinos play an important role whereas those of Majorana neutrinos have no practical effects. However, if a substantial fraction of heavier neutrinos decay into the lightest one, the detection of relic neutrinos will require a much higher energy resolution and thus be even more challenging.

Abstract:Observation of ultra-high energy astrophysical neutrinos and identification of their flavors have been proposed for future neutrino telescopes. The flavor ratio of astrophysical neutrinos observed on the Earth depends on both the initial flavor ratio at the source and flavor transitions taking place during propagations of these neutrinos. The flavor transition mechanisms are well-classified with our model-independent parametrization. We find a new parameter R={\phi}_e/({\phi}_{\mu} + {\phi}_{\tau}) can probe directly the flavor transition in the framework of our model-independent parametrization, without the assumption of the {\nu}_{\mu}-{\nu}_{\tau} symmetry. A few flavor transition models are employed to test our parametrization with this new observable. The observational constraints on flavor transition mechanisms by the new observable is discussed through our model-independent parametrization.

Abstract:The theory and phenomenology of neutrinos will be addressed, especially that relating to the observation of neutrino flavor transformations. The current status and implications for future experiments will be discussed with special emphasis on the experiments that will determine the neutrino mass ordering, the dominant flavor content of the neutrino mass eigenstate with the smallest electron neutrino content and the size of CP violation in the neutrino sector. Beyond the neutrino Standard Model, the evidence for and a possible definitive experiment to confirm or refute the existence of light sterile neutrinos will be briefly discussed.

Abstract:One of the important goals for future neutrino telescopes is to identify the flavors of astrophysical neutrinos and therefore determine the flavor ratio. The flavor ratio of astrophysical neutrinos observed on the Earth depends on both the initial flavor ratio at the source and flavor transitions taking place during propagations of these neutrinos. We propose a model independent parametrization for describing the above flavor transitions. A few flavor transition models are employed to test our parametrization. The observational test for flavor transition mechanisms through our parametrization is discussed.

Abstract:We revisited the computation of the cross section for the μ+μ+→l+l+ (l+=τ+,e+) transitions in the presence of new heavy Majorana neutrinos. We focus on scenarios where the masses of the new states are around some few TeV, the so-called low-scale seesaw models. Our analysis is set in a simple model with only two new heavy Majorana neutrinos considering the current limits on the heavy-light mixings. Abstract:In the case of two-generation Majorana neutrinos, we derive the oscillation probabilities for $\nu \leftrightarrow \nu$, $\nu^c \leftrightarrow \nu^c$, and $\nu \leftrightarrow \nu^c$ within a unified framework using a relativistic equation. We demonstrate that the Majorana phase arises not from lepton number violation but from chirality change. Additionally, we verify the conservation of unitarity. Notably, we find that the oscillation probabilities for $\nu \leftrightarrow \nu^c$ derived in this paper differ significantly from previous results, particularly in the absence of zero-distance effects and direct CP violation.

Abstract:We consider the possibility of neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar n$) conversion, in which the change of a neutron into an antineutron is mediated by an external source, as can occur in a scattering process. We develop the connections between $n-{\bar n}$ conversion and $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation, in which a neutron spontaneously tranforms into an antineutron, noting that if $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation occurs in a theory with B-L violation, then $n-{\bar n}$ conversion can occur also. We show how an experimental limit on $n-{\bar n}$ conversion could connect concretely to a limit on $n-{\bar n}$ oscillation, and vice versa, using effective field theory techniques and baryon matrix elements computed in the M.I.T. bag model.

Abstract:Neutrinos play pivotal roles in determining fluid dynamics, nucleosynthesis, and their observables in core-collapse supernova (CCSN) and binary neutron star merger (BNSM). In this paper, we present a novel phenomenon, collisional flavor swap, in which neutrino-matter interactions trigger the complete interchange of neutrino spectra between two different flavors, aided by neutrino self-interactions. We find that a necessary condition to trigger the collisional swap is occurrences of resonancelike collisional flavor instability. In cases where neutrino self-interactions substantially dominate over the collision rate, the collisional swap occurs in the entire neutrino energy spectrum, while intriguing energy-dependent features can emerge after the completion of flavor swap. Since flavor swaps correspond to the most extreme case in flavor conversions, they have a great potential to affect CCSN and BNSM phenomena. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.103009 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We study two superluminal neutrino scenarios where [Formula: see text] is a constant. To be consistent with the OPERA, Borexino and ICARUS experiments and with the SN1987a observations, we assume that δv ν on the Earth is about three-order larger than that on the interstellar scale. To explain the theoretical challenges from the Bremsstrahlung effects and pion decays, we consider the deformed Lorentz invariance, and show that the superluminal neutrino dispersion relations can be realized properly while the modifications to the dispersion relations of the other Standard Model particles can be negligible. In addition, we propose the deformed energy and momentum conservation laws for a generic physical process. In Scenario I the momentum conservation law is preserved while the energy conservation law is deformed. In Scenario II the energy conservation law is preserved while the momentum conservation law is deformed. We present the energy and momentum conservation laws in terms of neutrino momentum in Scenario I and in terms of neutrino energy in Scenario II. In such formats, the energy and momentum conservation laws are exactly the same as those in the traditional quantum field theory with Lorentz symmetry. Thus, all the above theoretical challenges can be automatically solved. We show explicitly that the Bremsstrahlung processes are forbidden and there is no problem for pion decays.

Neutrino Flavor Pendulum Reloaded: The Case of Fast Pairwise Conversion

Abstract:In core-collapse supernovae or compact binary merger remnants, neutrino-neutrino refraction can spawn fast pair conversion of the type $\nu_e \bar\nu_e \leftrightarrow \nu_x \bar\nu_x$ (with $x=\mu, \tau$), governed by the angle-dependent density matrices of flavor lepton number. In a homogeneous and axially symmetric two-flavor system, all angle modes evolve coherently, and we show that the nonlinear equations of motion are formally equivalent to those of a gyroscopic pendulum. Within this analogy, our main innovation is to identify the elusive characteristic of the lepton-number angle distribution that determines the depth of conversion with the "pendulum spin." The latter is given by the real part of the eigenfrequency resulting from the linear normal-mode analysis of the neutrino system. This simple analogy allows one to predict the depth of flavor conversion without solving the nonlinear evolution equations. Our approach provides a novel diagnostic tool to explore the physics of nonlinear systems.

Collective neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in dense neutrino environments?

Abstract:The paradigm-changing possibility of collective neutrino-antineutrino oscillations was recently advanced in analogy to collective flavor oscillations. However, the amplitude for the backward scattering process $\nu_{\mathbf{p}_1}\overline\nu_{\mathbf{p}_2}\to\nu_{\mathbf{p}_2}\overline\nu_{\mathbf{p}_1}$ is helicity-suppressed and vanishes for massless neutrinos, implying that there is no off-diagonal refractive index between $\nu$ and $\overline\nu$ of a single flavor of massless neutrinos. For a nonvanishing mass, collective helicity oscillations are possible, representing de-facto $\nu$--$\overline\nu$ oscillations in the Majorana case. However, such phenomena are suppressed by the smallness of neutrino masses as discussed in the previous literature.

Abstract:In a first part, we justify the feasibility of substituting a photon leg by a neutrino current in the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian to obtain an effective Lagrangian for the process $\gamma\nu\to\gamma\gamma \nu$ and its crossed reactions. We establish the link between these processes and the four-photon scattering in both the Standard Model and the effective theory. As an application, we compute in this effective theory the processes $\gamma\nu\to\gamma\gamma\nu$ and $\gamma\gamma\to\gamma{\nu}\bar\nu$ and show how to use the $\gamma\gamma\to\gamma\gamma$ results as a check. We settle the question of the disagreement between two computations in the literature concerning the reaction $\gamma\gamma\to \gamma \nu\bar\nu$. In the second part, we present results of the direct computation of the photon-neutrino five-leg processes in the Standard Model, discuss possible astrophysical implications of our results, and provide simple fits to the exact expressions.
