Abstract:The use of liquid helium and neon as scintillators for neutrino detection is investigated. Several unique properties of these cryogens make them promising candidates for real-time solar neutrino spectroscopy: large ultraviolet scintillation yields from ionizing radiation, transparency to their own scintillation light, and low levels of radioactive impurities. When neutrinos scatter from electrons in liquid helium or neon, ultraviolet light is emitted. The ultraviolet scintillation light can be efficiently converted to the visible with wavelength shifting films. In this way the neutrino-electron scattering events can be detected by photomultiplier tubes at room temperature. We conclude that the solar neutrino flux from the $\rm p+p\to e^{+}+d+\nu_{e}$ reaction could be characterized and monitored versus time using a 10 ton mass of liquid helium or neon as a scintillation target.

Neutral Current Coherent Cross Sections-Implications on Gaseous Spherical TPC's for detecting SN and Earth neutrinos

Abstract:The detection of galactic supernova (SN) neutrinos represents one of the future frontiers of low-energy neutrino physics and astrophysics. The collapse of a neutron star liberates a gravitational binding energy of about 3 × 1053 erg, 99% of which is transferred to neutrinos and antineutrions of all the flavors and only 1% to the kinetic energy of the explosion. In other words, a core-collapse supernova represents one of the most powerful sources of neutrinos and antineutrinos of all flavors in the Universe. The neutron coherence of neutral currents (NC) allows quite large cross sections in the case of neutron rich targets, which can be exploited in detecting earth and sky neutrinos by measuring nuclear recoils. These (NC) cross sections are not dependent on flavor conversions and, thus, their measurement will provide useful information about the neutrino source. In particular they will yield information about the primary neutrino fluxes, i.e. before flavor conversions in neutrino sphere. The advantages of large gaseous low threshold and high resolution time projection counters (TPC) detectors will be discussed. These are especially promising since they are expected to be relatively cheap and easy to maintain. The information thus obtained can also be useful to other flavor sensitive detectors, e.g. the large liquid scintillation detectors like LENA. All together such detectors will provide invaluable information on the astrophysics of core-collapse explosion and on the neutrino mixing parameters. In particular, neutrino flavor transitions in the SN envelope might be sensitive to the value of θ13 and to the unknown neutrino mass hierarchy. Untill a real SN explosion is detected, one can use available earth neutrino sources with similar energy spectra to test the behavior of these detectors. Among them, the ORNL Neutron Spallation source (SNS) and boosted radioactive neutrino beams are good candidates.
Probing neutrino millicharges at the European Spallation Source

Abstract:We study the potential of a set of future detectors, proposed to be located at the European Spallation Source (ESS), to probe neutrino millicharges through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. In particular, we focus on detectors with similar characteristics as those that are under development for operation at the ESS, including detection technologies based on cesium iodine, germanium, and noble gases. Under the considered conditions, we show that the Ge detector, with a lighter nuclear target mass with respect to CsI and to a noble gas like Xe, is more efficient to constrain neutrino millicharges, reaching a sensitivity of $\sim 10^{-9}e$ for diagonal neutrino millicharges, and $\sim 10^{-8}e$ for the transition ones. In addition, we study the effects of including electron scattering processes for the CsI detector, achieving an expected sensitivity of $\sim 10^{-10} e$ for the diagonal millicharges.

Abstract:In order to extract neutrino oscillation parameters, precision long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments rely on detailed models of neutrino interactions with nuclei. These models constitute an important source of systematic uncertainty, partially because detectors to date have been blind to final state neutrons. Three-dimensional projection scintillator trackers comprise components of the near detectors of the next generation long-baseline neutrino experiments. Due to the good timing resolution and fine granularity, this technology is capable of measuring neutron kinetic energy in neutrino interactions on an event-by-event basis and will provide valuable data for refining neutrino interaction models and ways to reconstruct neutrino energy. Two prototypes have been exposed to the neutron beamline at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in both 2019 and 2020, with neutron energies between 0 and 800 MeV. In order to demonstrate the capability of neutron detection, the total neutron-scintillator cross section is measured and compared to external measurements. The measured total neutron cross section in scintillator between 98 and 688 MeV is 0.36 $\pm$ 0.05 barn.

Abstract:Large liquid xenon detectors aiming for dark matter direct detection will soon become viable tools also for investigating neutrino physics. Information on the effects of nuclear structure in neutrino-nucleus scattering can be important in distinguishing neutrino backgrounds in such detectors. We perform calculations for differential and total cross sections of neutral-current neutrino scattering off the most abundant xenon isotopes. The nuclear structure calculations are made in the nuclear shell model for elastic scattering, and also in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) and microscopic quasiparticle phonon model (MQPM) for both elastic and inelastic scattering. Using suitable neutrino energy distributions, we compute estimates of total averaged cross sections for 8B solar neutrinos and supernova neutrinos.

Abstract:The coherent elastic scattering of neutrinos off nuclei has eluded detection for four decades, even though its predicted cross-section is the largest by far of all low-energy neutrino couplings. This mode of interaction provides new opportunities to study neutrino properties, and leads to a miniaturization of detector size, with potential technological applications. We observe this process at a 6.7-sigma confidence level, using a low-background, 14.6-kg CsI[Na] scintillator exposed to the neutrino emissions from the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Characteristic signatures in energy and time, predicted by the Standard Model for this process, are observed in high signal-to-background conditions. Improved constraints on non-standard neutrino interactions with quarks are derived from this initial dataset.

Abstract:Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) and other rare-event physics searches, like dark matter detection, have been especially furthered by increasing sensitivity to low-energy particle interactions. Experiments using multiple detector technologies have sought CE$\nu$NS at the most intense terrestrial sources of neutrinos: spallation facilities and nuclear reactors. This thesis reports on the feasibility of using cryogenic pure CsI as an improved next-generation CE$\nu$NS target at the up-and-coming European Spallation Source. Calibrations and simulations presented here predict an increase by a factor of at least $\sim33$ in the rate of observable neutrino-induced events per unit mass, compared to past use of room-temperature CsI[Na]. Also reported is the first measurement of CE$\nu$NS from antineutrinos at the Dresden Generating Station, a power nuclear reactor, employing a large-mass semiconducting germanium diode dubbed NCC-1701. In each section on detecting these neutrino couplings, the importance of understanding device response to low-energy nuclear recoils is highlighted. Finally, finding synergy for tools developed to extricate sub-keV CE$\nu$NS signals, a search for the exotic mode of muon decay $\mu^+ \xrightarrow{} e^+X$ was performed. New sensitivity limits in previously untouched parameter space for a massive boson dark matter candidate of cosmological interest are presented.

Abstract:Atmospheric neutrinos play a vital role in generating irreducible backgrounds in liquid-scintillator (LS) detectors via their neutral-current (NC) interactions with $^{12}$C nuclei. These interactions may affect a wide range of research areas from the MeV to GeV energy range, such as the reactor and geo neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), dark matter, and nucleon decay searches. In this work, we extend our preceding paper, by conducting a first-time systematic exploration of NC backgrounds as low as the MeV region of reactor and geo neutrinos. We utilize up-to-date neutrino generator models from GENIE and NuWro, a TALYS-based nuclear deexcitation package and a GEANT4-based detector simulation toolkit for our complete calculation. Our primary focus is to predict the NC background for experimental searches of inverse-beta-decay signals below the 100 MeV visible energy. In order to have deeper understanding of the characteristics of atmospheric neutrino NC interactions in LS, we investigate the model dependence of NC background predictions by using various data-driven models, including the initial neutrino-nucleon interactions, nuclear ground-state structure, final-state interactions, nuclear deexcitation processes, and secondary interactions of final-state particles.

Abstract:We present neutrino cross sections on $^{13}$C. The charged-current cross sections leading to various states in the daughter $^{13}N$ and the neutral-current cross sections leading to various states in the daughter $^{13}$C are given. We also provide simple polynomial fits to those cross sections for quick estimates of the reaction rates. We briefly discuss possible implications for the current and future scintillator-based experiments.

Abstract:The ultrahigh energy range of neutrino physics (above $\sim 10^{7} \, \mathrm{GeV}$), as yet devoid of detections, is an open landscape with challenges to be met and discoveries to be made. Neutrino-nucleon cross sections in that range - with center-of-momentum energies $\sqrt{s} \gtrsim 4 \, \mathrm{TeV}$ - are powerful probes of unexplored phenomena. We present a simple and accurate model-independent framework to evaluate how well these cross sections can be measured for an unknown flux and generic detectors. We also demonstrate how to characterize and compare detector sensitivity. We show that cross sections can be measured to $\simeq ^{+65}_{-30}$% precision over $\sqrt{s} \simeq$ 4-140 TeV ($E_\nu = 10^7$-$10^{10}$ GeV) with modest energy and angular resolution and $\simeq 10$ events per energy decade. Many allowed novel-physics models (extra dimensions, leptoquarks, etc.) produce much larger effects. In the distant future, with $\simeq 100$ events at the highest energies, the precision would be $\simeq 15\%$, probing even QCD saturation effects.

Abstract:Atmospheric neutrinos contribute significantly to irreducible backgrounds through their neutral-current (NC) interactions with $^{12}$C nuclei in liquid-scintillator detectors, impacting diffuse supernova neutrino background, nucleon decay, and reactor neutrinos. This paper extends our prior work by systematically studying the NC backgrounds towards the MeV region of reactor neutrinos. We employ contemporary neutrino generator models from GENIE and NuWro for calculations, with a focus on predicting NC background in experimental searches for inverse-beta-decay signals below 100 MeV visible energy. We estimate the systematic uncertainty to our estimation of the NC background using various data-driven neutrino generator models, addressing factors such as the initial neutrino-nucleon NC interaction, the nuclear model, the final-state interaction model, the nucleus deexcitation, and the secondary interaction on final-state particles.

Abstract:Neutrino interactions with nuclei have been the subject of intense interest over the last 15 years. Current and future measurements of neutrino oscillation and exotic physics use order 0.1--10 GeV neutrinos on a range of nuclear targets ($^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ar). As the precision of these experiments has increased, information from their detectors and dedicated experiments indicate deficiencies in the modeling of neutrino interactions on nuclear targets. Here, we present the current state of knowledge about neutrino-nucleus interactions, the challenge of extracting the cross section of these processes, and current experimental puzzles in the field. We also look forward to new and novel measurements and efforts in the future which seek to resolve these questions.

Abstract:A future large-volume liquid scintillator detector would provide a high-statistics measurement of terrestrial antineutrinos originating from $\beta$-decays of the uranium and thorium chains. In addition, the forward displacement of the neutron in the detection reaction $\bar\nu_e+p\to n+e^+$ provides directional information. We investigate the requirements on such detectors to distinguish between certain geophysical models on the basis of the angular dependence of the geoneutrino flux. Our analysis is based on a Monte-Carlo simulation with different levels of light yield, considering both unloaded and gadolinium-loaded scintillators. We find that a 50 kt detector such as the proposed LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) will detect deviations from isotropy of the geoneutrino flux significantly. However, with an unloaded scintillator the time needed for a useful discrimination between different geophysical models is too large if one uses the directional information alone. A Gd-loaded scintillator improves the situation considerably, although a 50 kt detector would still need several decades to distinguish between a geophysical reference model and one with a large neutrino source in the Earth's core. However, a high-statistics measurement of the total geoneutrino flux and its spectrum still provides an extremely useful glance at the Earth's interior.

Abstract:Calculations of (anti)neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections are vital since experimental results for these cross sections for terrestrial-based (anti)neutrino sources in the low-to-intermediate energy ranges are exceedingly rare. A recent measurement of the scattering of stopped-pion neutrinos off I127 by the COHERENT Collaboration yielded a cross section that was only 41% of the expected theoretical prediction. Inspired by this, we have computed the cross sections for (anti)neutrino scatterings off I127 and Cs133 by considering also the effect of the quenching of the weak axial coupling gA on the results. Two quenching schemes, a conservative and a radical estimate, were considered. The cross sections as functions of the neutrino energy are presented along with folded cross sections for stopped-pion and supernova (anti)neutrino spectra. The nuclear model used was the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model based on large single-particle model spaces and realistic G -matrix-based effective two-body interactions. The obtained inclusive cross sections for stopped-pion neutrino scattering off I127 are in good agreement with the experimental results. Abstract:The MINER$\nu$A experiment investigates neutrino interactions with nucleons needed for an understanding of electroweak interactions of hadrons. Since nuclear targets are being used many-body effects may affect the extracted cross sections and the energy reconstruction. The latter is essential for the extraction of neutrino oscillation properties. We investigate the influence of nuclear effects on neutrino interaction cross sections and make predictions for charged current quasielastic (QE) scattering, nucleon-knock-out and pion- and kaon-production on a CH target. The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model is used for the description of neutrino-nucleus reactions. Integrated and differential cross sections for inclusive neutrino scattering, QE processes and particle production for the MINER$\nu$A neutrino flux are calculated. The influence of final state interactions on the identification of these processes is discussed. In particular, energy and $Q^2$ reconstruction for the MINER$\nu$A flux are critically examined. The $Q^2$ dependence of the inclusive cross sections is found to be sensitive to the energy reconstruction. Cut-offs in flux distributions have a large effect. Final state interactions affect the pion kinetic energy spectra significantly and increase the kaon cross sections by cross feeding from other channels.

Abstract:Future large liquid-scintillator (LS) detectors are competitive with and complementary to the water-Cherenkov detectors on the searches for diffuse supernova neutrino background and nucleon decay. In a companion paper, we have performed a systematic calculation of the neutral-current (NC) background induced by atmospheric neutrino interactions on C12 nuclei in LS detectors, which are expected to be crucially important for the experimental searches for the diffuse supernova neutrino background and nucleon decay. In this paper, we perform a systematic study on the measurement of the NC background and evaluate the associated uncertainties. We first exploit the characteristics of the NC background, in particular, the multiplicities of neutrons and pions, and the possible association with unstable residual nuclei. It turns out that the neutron multiplicity distribution is very powerful to discriminate among different models. Then, we develop a maximum-likelihood method to allow an in situ measurement of the NC interactions with a triple-coincidence signature. Finally, a data-driven approach is proposed to evaluate the uncertainty of the NC background in the search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background. We conclude that future large LS experiments like the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory will be able to make a unique contribution to the worldwide dataset to improve the prediction of atmospheric neutrino NC interactions on C12.

Abstract:To investigate the existence of sterile neutrino, we propose a new neutrino production method using $^{13}$C beams and a $^{9}$Be target for short-baseline electron antineutrino (${\bar{\nu}}_{e}$) disappearance study. The production of secondary unstable isotopes which can emit neutrinos from the $^{13}$C + $^{9}$Be reaction is calculated with three different nucleus-nucleus (AA) reaction models. Different isotope yields are obtained using these models, but the results of the neutrino flux are found to have unanimous similarities. This feature gives an opportunity to study neutrino oscillation through shape analysis. In this work, expected neutrino flux and event rates are discussed in detail through intensive simulation of the light ion collision reaction and the neutrino flux from the beta decay of unstable isotopes followed by this collision. Together with the reactor and accelerator anomalies, the present proposed ${\bar{\nu}}_{e}$ source is shown to be a practically alternative test of the existence of the $\Delta m^{2}$ $\sim$ 1 eV$^{2}$ scale sterile neutrino.

Abstract:Knowledge of the neutron light-yield response is crucial to the understanding of scintillator-based neutron detectors. In this work, neutrons from 2–6MeV have been used to study the scintillation light-yield response of the liquid scintillators NE 213A, EJ 305, EJ 331 and EJ 321P using event-by-event waveform digitization. Energy calibration was performed using a GEANT4 model to locate the edge positions of the Compton distributions produced by gamma-ray sources. The simulated light yield for neutrons from a PuBe source was compared to measured recoil proton distributions, where neutron energy was selected by time-of-flight. This resulted in an energy-dependent Birks parameterization to characterize the non-linear response to the lower energy neutrons. The NE 213A and EJ 305 results agree very well with existing data and are reproduced nicely by the simulation. New results for EJ 331 and EJ 321P, where the simulation also reproduces the data well, are presented.

Improvements in Antineutrino Detector Response by Including Fission Product Isomeric Transitions and Corrections using New Data

Abstract:CEvNS detectors could provide new opportunities in nuclear physics applications if they can improve existing parameters such as neutrino detector size, portability, their sensitivity to a large range of reactor antineutrino energies, and resources required for operation. Thus, modelling the antineutrino spectrum is a crucial step to study the reactor antineutrino spectra and the CEvNS detector response. The first objective of this paper is to study the importance of fission product libraries in the construction of antineutrino spectrum using the summation method and with various corrections. We have used ENDF/B-VIII and JEFF3.3 as our base data to model the spectrum. We have also included the TAGS data (pandemonium free) when such data is available. The isomeric transitions correction has the highest impact on the antineutrino spectra increasing the values 29% to 37% on an average in the energy range of 0.5 MeV to 2 MeV. This correction also shows an increase of 4.71% to 7.13% in the range of 0 to 2 MeV, with improving isomeric transitions using the TAGS data. Next, the spectra including the isomeric transition correction using the Gross Theory causes reduction by 11.56 % to 69.46 % in the range of 6 to 8 MeV. The finite size, radiative, and weak magnetism corrections cause no more than 3.27% difference between the corrected and uncorrected spectra. Our second objective is to calculate pulse height distributions of Ge and Si based CEvNS sensors assuming a 20eV nuclear recoil threshold. In our study, we have assumed a 100kg detector placed 10m away from the 1MW TRIGA reactor. Our results show that the detector response with corrected spectra for a natural Ge and Si detector are 44.25events/day and 7.99events/day. The biggest impact on the detector response is due to the isomeric transition correction; with 37% difference between the corrected and uncorrected detector response is observed.
