Abstract:The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the neutron and the electron are reviewed within the framework of the supersymmetric standard model (SSM) based on grand unified theories coupled to N=1 supergravity. Taking into account one-loop and two-loop contributions to the EDMs, we explore SSM parameter space consistent with experiments and discuss predicted values for the EDMs. Implications of baryon asymmetry of our universe for the EDMs are also discussed.

Abstract:We consider a model in which baryogenesis occurs at low scale, at a temperature below the electroweak phase transition. This model involves new diquark-type scalars which carry baryon number. Baryon number violation is introduced in the scalar potential, permitting Δ B=2 violating process involving Standard Model quarks while avoiding stringent proton decay constraints. Depending on their quantum number assignment, the diquark-type scalars can couple to either right or left handed quarks, or to both. We show that this model can provide a viable explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe provided that the coupling to left handed quarks are present. However, the coexistence of couplings to left and right handed quarks introduces important phenomenological constraints on the model, such as radiative contributions to quark masses and the generation of electric dipole moments for nuclei, which probe the CP even and CP odd products of the relevant couplings constants, respectively. We demonstrate that the strongest such constraints arise from electric dipole moment measurements of the neutron and ^199Hg. These constraints are sufficiently strong that, in the absence of an intricate flavor structure, baryogenesis must be dominated by the couplings of the new scalars to left handed quarks.

Abstract:We perform a study on the predictions of electric-dipole moments of neutron, Mercury (Hg), Thallium (Tl), deuteron, and Radium (Ra) in the framework of next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with $CP$-violating parameters in the superpotential and soft-supersymmetry-breaking sector. We confine to the case in which only the physical tree-level $CP$ phase (${\ensuremath{\phi}}_{\ensuremath{\lambda}}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\phi}}_{\ensuremath{\kappa}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$), associated with the couplings of the singlet terms in the superpotential and with the vacuum-expectation-values, takes on a nonzero value. We found that the one-loop contributions from neutralinos are mostly small while the two-loop Higgs-mediated contributions of the Barr-Zee type diagrams dominate. We emphasize a scenario motivated by electroweak baryogenesis.

Abstract:We compute the baryon asymmetry generated at the electroweak phase transition by the Higgs scalar sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Because of large enhancement effects from low momentum modes, Higgs particles may be responsible for the observed baryon asymmetry even though CP-violation in the Higgs sector only appears at the one-loop level. We also discuss the approximations made in the analysis and suggest possible improvements.

Abstract:We calculate the baryon asymmetry produced at the electroweak phase transition by quasidegenerate third-generation sfermions in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We evaluate constraints from Higgs searches, from collider searches for supersymmetric particles, and from null searches for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron, of the neutron and of atoms. We find that resonant sfermion sources can in principle provide a large enough baryon asymmetry in various corners of the sfermion parameter space, and we focus, in particular, on the case of large tan beta, where third-generation down-type (s) fermions become relevant. We show that in the case of top squark and sbottom sources, the viable parameter space is ruled out by constraints from the nonobservation of the Mercury electric dipole moment. We introduce a new class of CP-violating sources, quasidegenerate staus, that escapes current electric dipole moment constraints while providing large enough net chiral currents to achieve successful slepton-mediated electroweak baryogenesis.
Electric dipole moments of W boson and neutron from supersymmetry

Abstract:The supersymmetric standard model (SSM) has a CP-violating phase in its gauge-Higgs sector. This new source of CP violation induces the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the neutron and electron at the one-loop level. The same CP-violating phase generates the EDM of the $W$ boson through one-loop diagrams mediated by the charginos and neutralinos, which leads to the EDMs of the neutron and electron at the two-loop level. We discuss these EDMs, assuming that the CP-violating phase has the magnitude of order 0.1--1 which may be suggested from the baryon asymmetry of the universe. Even at the two-loop level the neutron and the electron could have EDMs which are smaller than their experimental upper bounds by only one order of magnitude. Since these two-loop contributions do not depend on the values of SSM parameters for the squark or slepton sector, they provide predictions for the EDMs less ambiguous than the one-loop contributions.

Abstract:We investigate the impact of the tau and bottom Yukawa couplings on the transport dynamics for electroweak baryogenesis in supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. Although it has generally been assumed in the literature that all Yukawa interactions except those involving the top quark are negligible, we find that the tau and bottom Yukawa interaction rates are too fast to be neglected. We identify an illustrative "lepton-mediated electroweak baryogenesis'' scenario in which the baryon asymmetry is induced mainly through the presence of a left-handed leptonic charge. We derive analytic formulas for the computation of the baryon asymmetry that, in light of these effects, are qualitatively different from those in the established literature. In this scenario, for fixed CP-violating phases, the baryon asymmetry has opposite sign compared to that calculated using established formulas.

Abstract:We study the implications for electroweak baryogenesis (EWB) within the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) of present and future searches for the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron, for neutralino dark matter, and for supersymmetric particles at high energy colliders. We show that there exist regions of the MSSM parameter space that are consistent with both present two-loop EDM limits and the relic density and that allow for successful EWB through resonant chargino and neutralino processes at the electroweak phase transition. We also show that under certain conditions the lightest neutralino may be simultaneously responsible for both the baryon asymmetry and the dark matter. We give present constraints on chargino/neutralino-induced EWB implied by the flux of energetic neutrinos from the Sun, the prospective constraints from future neutrino telescopes and ton-sized direct detection experiments, and the possible signatures at the Large Hadron Collider and International Linear Collider.
Bino-driven Electroweak Baryogenesis with Highly Suppressed Electric Dipole Moments

Abstract:It is conventional wisdom that successful electroweak baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) is in tension with the non-observation of electric dipole moments (EDMs), since the level of CP-violation responsible for electroweak baryogenesis is believed to generate unavoidably large EDMs. We show that CP-violation in the bino–Higgsino sector of the MSSM can account for successful electroweak baryogenesis without inducing large EDMs. This observation weakens the correlation between electroweak baryogenesis and EDMs, and makes the bino-driven electroweak baryogenesis scenario the least constrained by EDM limits. Taking this observation together with the requirement of a strongly first-order electroweak phase transition, we argue that a bino-driven scenario with a light stop is the most phenomenologically viable MSSM electroweak baryogenesis scenario.
Neutron Electric Dipole Moment from Supersymmetric Anomalous W-boson Coupling

Abstract:In the supersymmetric standard model (SSM) the $W$-boson could have a non-vanishing electric dipole moment (EDM) through a one-loop diagram mediated by the charginos and neutralinos. Then the $W$-boson EDM induces the EDMs of the neutron and the electron. We discuss these EDMs, taking into consideration the constraints from the neutron and electron EDMs at one-loop level induced by the charginos and squarks or sleptons. It is shown that the neutron and the electron could respectively have EDMs of order of $10^{-26}e$cm and $10^{-27}e$cm, solely owing to the $W$-boson EDM. Since these EDMs do not depend on the values of SSM parameters for the squark or slepton sector, they provide less ambiguous predictions for CP violation in the SSM.

Abstract:In the context of supersymmetry, the two-loop Barr-Zee diagrams which induce CP-violating electric dipole moment of electron due to superpartners simultaneously yield CP-conserving magnetic dipole moment of muon. In this paper, we derive the coherence between the electric and magnetic dipole moments at two-loop level due to stops, charginos or neutralinos-charginos. We also use the coherence to constrain superpartner masses and their CP-violating phases, in the light of recent ACME limit on the electric dipole moment of electron and future experiments about magnetic dipole moment of muon such as Fermilab E989 experiment.
The electric dipole moment in a model for neutrino mass, dark matter and baryon asymmetry of the Universe

Abstract:The electric dipole moment is examined in a three-loop neutrino mass model with dark matter originally proposed in Aoki et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 051805 (2009)]. The model contains a $CP$-violating phase in the Higgs potential which plays an important role in electroweak baryogenesis and is thus expected to explain the baryon asymmetry of the Universe simultaneously. However, such a $CP$-violating phase is severely constrained by the measurements of the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM), and a suppression mechanism for the eEDM is necessary to explain the observed baryon asymmetry while avoiding the constraint. In this paper, we examine neutrino mass, lepton-flavor-violating processes, dark matter, and the eEDM in the model. We show that the eEDM can be suppressed by destructive interference between the $CP$-violating phases in the Higgs sector and the dark sector with large $CP$-violating phases. We propose some benchmark scenarios including $O(1)$ $CP$-violating phases where tiny neutrino mass and dark matter can be explained while avoiding all current experimental and theoretical constraints. These $CP$-violating phases are expected to be large enough to generate the observed baryon asymmetry in the electroweak baryogenesis scenario.

Abstract:We study the viability of electroweak baryogenesis in a two Higgs doublet model scenario augmented by vector-like, electroweakly interacting fermions. Considering a limited, but illustrative region of the model parameter space, we obtain the observed cosmic baryon asymmetry while satisfying present constraints from the non-observation of the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron and the combined ATLAS and CMS result for the Higgs boson diphoton decay rate. The observation of a non-zero electron EDM in a next generation experiment and/or the observation of an excess (over the Standard Model) of Higgs to diphoton events with the 14 TeV LHC run or a future e + e − collider would be consistent with generation of the observed baryon asymmetry in this scenario.

Abstract:In this work, we make the first study of electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) based on the LHC data in the CP-violating next-to-minimal supersymmetric model (NMSSM) where a strongly first order electroweak phase transition (EWPT) is obtained in the general complex Higgs potential. With representative benchmark points which pass the current LEP and LHC constraints, we demonstrate the structure of EWPT for those points and how a strongly first order EWPT is obtained in the complex NMSSM where the resulting gravitational wave production properties are found to be within the reaches of future space-based interferometers like BBO and Ultimate-DECIGO. We further calculate the generated baryon asymmetries where the CP violating sources are (1): higgsino-singlino dominated, (2): higgsino-gaugino dominated or (3): from both sources. It is shown that all three representing scenarios could evade the strong constraints set by various electric dipole moments (EDM) searches where cancellations among the EDM contributions occur at the tree level (higgsino-singlino dominated) or loop level (higgsino-gaugino dominated). The 125 GeV SM like Higgs can be either the second lightest neutral Higgs H2 or the third lightest neutral Higgs H3. Finally, we comment on the future direct and indirect probe of CPV in the Higgs sector from the collider and EDM experiments.

Abstract:We perform a quantitative study of the neutron and electron electric dipole moments (EDM) in Supersymmetry, in the limit of heavy scalars. The leading contributions arise at two loops. We give the complete analytic result, including a new contribution associated with Z-Higgs exchange, which plays an important and often leading role in the neutron EDM. The predictions for the EDM are typically within the sensitivities of the next generation experiments. We also analyse the correlation between the electron and neutron EDM, which provides a robust test of Split Supersymmetry.

Abstract:We present a complete treatment of the diffusion processes for supersymmetric electroweak baryogenesis that characterizes transport dynamics ahead of the phase transition bubble wall within the symmetric phase. In particular, we generalize existing approaches to distinguish between chemical potentials of particles and their superpartners. This allows us to test the assumption of superequilibrium (equal chemical potentials for particles and sparticles) that has usually been made in earlier studies. We show that in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, superequilibrium is generically maintained - even in the absence of fast supergauge interactions - due to the presence of Yukawa interactions. We provide both analytic arguments as well as illustrative numerical examples. We also extend the latter to regions where analytical approximations are not available since down-type Yukawa couplings or supergauge interactions only incompletely equilibrate. We further comment on cases of broken superequilibrium wherein a heavy superpartner decouples from the electroweak plasma, causing a kinematic bottleneck in the chain of equilibrating reactions. Such situations may be relevant for baryogenesis within extensions of the MSSM. We also provide a compendium of inputs required to characterize the symmetric phase transport dynamics.

Abstract:We consider the scenario of electroweak baryogenesis mediated by cosmological defect in models of supersymmetry breaking. When the effective electroweak breaking scale is raised in the defect configuration, the mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis works at a higher energy scale. The baryon charge produced by the mechanism is captured in the defect, protected from sphalerons and then released when the defect decay.

Abstract:We propose a scenario that generates the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe through a multistep phase transition in which SU(3) color symmetry is first broken and then restored. A spontaneous violation of B - L conservation leads to a contribution to the baryon asymmetry that becomes negligible in the final phase. The baryon asymmetry is therefore produced exclusively through the electroweak mechanism in the intermediate phase. We illustrate this scenario with a simple model that reproduces the observed baryon asymmetry. We discuss how future electric dipole moment and collider searches may probe this scenario, though future electric dipole moment searches would require an improved sensitivity of several orders of magnitude.

Abstract:We analyze electroweak baryogenesis during a two-step electroweak symmetry-breaking transition, wherein the baryon asymmetry is generated during the first step and preserved during the second. Focusing on the dynamics of CP violation required for asymmetry generation, we discuss general considerations for successful two-step baryogenesis. Using a concrete model realization, we illustrate in detail the viability of this scenario and the implications for present and future electric dipole moment (EDM) searches. We find that CP violation associated with a partially excluded sector may yield the observed baryon asymmetry while evading present and future EDM constraints.

Abstract:Baryon asymmetry of the Universe is evaluated in the model originally proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 102 (2009) 051805, where Majorana masses of neutrinos are generated via three-loop diagrams composed of additional scalar bosons including the dark matter candidate which is odd under an unbroken $Z_2$ symmetry. In order for the model to include multiple CP-violating phases, we do not impose the softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry imposed in the original model to avoid the flavor-changing neutral current at tree level. Instead, for simplicity, we assume the flavor alignment structure in the Yukawa interactions. We also simply assume the alignment structure in the Higgs potential so that the Higgs couplings coincide with those in the SM at tree level. Under these phenomenological simplifications, the model still contains multiple CP-violating phases. By using destructive interferences among them, it is compatible with the stringent constraint from the electric dipole moment measurements to generate the observed baryon asymmetry along with the scenario of electroweak baryogenesis. We show a benchmark scenario which can explain neutrino mass, dark matter and baryon asymmetry of the universe simultaneously and can satisfy all the other available experimental data. Some phenomenological predictions of the model are also discussed.
