Flight Performance of an advanced CZT Imaging Detector in a Balloon-borne Wide-Field Hard X-ray Telescope - ProtoEXIST1

Abstract:We successfully carried out the first high-altitude balloon flight of a wide-field hard X-ray coded-aperture telescope ProtoEXIST1, which was launched from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility at Ft. Sumner, New Mexico on October 9, 2009. ProtoEXIST1 is the first implementation of an advanced CdZnTe (CZT) imaging detector in our ongoing program to establish the technology required for next generation wide-field hard X-ray telescopes. The CZT detector plane in ProtoEXIST1 consists of an 8 x 8 array of closely tiled 2 cm x 2 cm x 0.5 cm thick pixellated CZT crystals, each with 8 x 8 pixels, covering a 256 cm^2 active area with 2.5 mm pixels. A tungsten mask, mounted at 90 cm above the detector provides shadowgrams of X-ray sources in the 30 - 600 keV band for imaging, allowing a fully coded field of view of 9 Deg x 9 Deg with an angular resolution of 20 arcmin. To reduce the background radiation, the detector is surrounded by semi-graded (Pb/Sn/Cu) passive shields on the four sides all the way to the mask. On the back side, a 26 cm x 26 cm x 2 cm CsI(Na) active shield provides signals to tag charged particle induced events as well as >~ 100 keV background photons from below. The flight duration was only about 7.5 hours due to strong winds (60 knots) at float altitude (38-39 km). Throughout the flight, the CZT detector performed excellently. The telescope observed Cyg X-1 for ~ 1 hour at the end of the flight. Despite a few problems with the pointing and aspect systems that caused the telescope to track about 6.4 deg off the target, the analysis of the Cyg X-1 data revealed an X-ray source at 7.2 sigma in the 30-100 keV energy band at the expected location from the optical images taken by the onboard daytime star camera. The success of this first flight is very encouraging for the future development of the advanced CZT imaging detectors (ProtoEXIST2, with 0.6 mm pixels).

Abstract:Background: Women treated with early stage breast cancer often gain weight following diagnosis. Tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitor (AI)-treated patients experience similar weight gains in randomized clinical trials after five years of adjuvant therapy. How switching therapies affects weight change is uncertain. Purpose: To determine the degree of weight change at the time of switching from tamoxifen to an aromatase inhibitor during adjuvant hormonal therapy, and to identify possible associations. Methods: Retrospective review of postmenopausal women with non-metastatic, invasive, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer sequenced from tamoxifen to an AI. Weights and height were recorded while on tamoxifen, 12 and 6 months prior to switching, at the time of the switch and 6 and 12 months post-switch. Variables included age at diagnosis, adjuvant chemotherapy, body-mass index (BMI), antidepressant use, co-morbidities, and menopausal status. Results: Data on 80 eligible patients revealed mean weight change from 12 months prior to 12 months post-switch was 0.7 kg (95%CI: -0.16, 1.5 kg, p=.11) with most of the change occurring before the switch. No significant difference was found between weights obtained from the time of switch to 12 months after (mean change -0.1 kg; 95% CI: -0.74, 0.53, p=.75). No association with age, stage, BMI, menopausal status, specific AI, duration of tamoxifen, adjuvant chemotherapy, alcohol or antidepressant use was found. Conclusions: While patients switching from tamoxifen to an AI experienced modest weight gain in the 12 months prior to the switch, they did not experience further significant weight change after 12 months on an AI.
Imaging Analysis of the Hard X-ray Telescope ProtoEXIST2 and New Techniques for High Resolution Coded Aperture Telescopes

Abstract:Wide-field (> 100 deg$^2$) hard X-ray coded-aperture telescopes with high angular resolution (< 2') will enable a wide range of time domain astrophysics. For instance, transient sources such as gamma-ray bursts can be precisely localized without assistance of secondary focusing X-ray telescopes to enable rapid followup studies. On the other hand, high angular resolution in coded-aperture imaging introduces a new challenge in handling the systematic uncertainty: average photon count per pixel is often too small to establish a proper background pattern or model the systematic uncertainty in a time scale where the model remains invariant. We introduce two new techniques to improve detection sensitivity, which are designed for, but not limited to high resolution coded-aperture system: a self-background modeling scheme which utilizes continuous scan or dithering operations, and a Poisson-statistics based probabilistic approach to evaluate the significance of source detection without subtraction in handling the background. We illustrate these new imaging analysis techniques in high resolution coded-aperture telescope using the data acquired by the wide-field hard X-ray telescope ProtoEXIST2 during the high-altitude balloon flight in Fall, 2012. We review the imaging sensitivity of ProtoEXIST2 during the flight, and demonstrate the performance of the new techniques using our balloon flight data in comparison with simulated ideal Poisson background.

Abstract:We have constructed a moderately large area (32 cm2), fine pixel (2.5 mm pixel, 5 mm thick) CZT imaging detector which constitutes the first section of a detector module (256 cm2) developed for a balloon-borne wide-field hard X-ray telescope, ProtoEXIST1. ProtoEXIST1 is a prototype for the High Energy Telescope (HET) in the Energetic X-ray imaging Survey Telescope (EXIST), a next generation space-borne multi-wavelength telescope. We have constructed a large (nearly gapless) detector plane through a modularization scheme by tiling of a large number of 2 cm x 2 cm CZT crystals. Our innovative packaging method is ideal for many applications such as coded-aperture imaging, where a large, continuous detector plane is desirable for the optimal performance. Currently we have been able to achieve an energy resolution of 3.2 keV (FWHM) at 59.6 keV on average, which is exceptional considering the moderate pixel size and the number of detectors in simultaneous operation. We expect to complete two modules (512 cm2) within the next few months as more CZT becomes available. We plan to test the performance of these detectors in a near space environment in a series of high altitude balloon flights, the first of which is scheduled for Fall 2009. These detector modules are the first in a series of progressively more sophisticated detector units and packaging schemes planned for ProtoEXIST2 & 3, which will demonstrate the technology required for the advanced CZT imaging detectors (0.6 mm pixel, 4.5 m2 area) required in EXIST/HET.

Abstract:We have assembled a tiled array (220 cm2) of fine pixel (0.6 mm) imaging CZT detectors for a balloon borne wide-field hard X-ray telescope, ProtoEXIST2. ProtoEXIST2 is a prototype experiment for a next generation hard X-ray imager MIRAX-HXI on board Lattes, a spacecraft from the Agencia Espacial Brasilieira. MIRAX will survey the 5 to 200 keV sky of Galactic bulge, adjoining southern Galactic plane and the extragalactic sky with 6' angular resolution. This survey will open a vast discovery space in timing studies of accretion neutron stars and black holes. The ProtoEXIST2 CZT detector plane consists of 64 of 5 mm thick 2 cm x 2 cm CZT crystals tiled with a minimal gap. MIRAX will consist of 4 such detector planes, each of which will be imaged with its own coded-aperture mask. We present the packaging architecture and assembly procedure of the ProtoEXIST2 detector. On 2012, Oct 10, we conducted a successful high altitude balloon experiment of the ProtoEXIST1 and 2 telescopes, which demonstrates their technology readiness for space application. During the flight both telescopes performed as well as on the ground. We report the results of ground calibration and the initial results for the detector performance in the balloon flight.

Abstract:We report our progress on the development of pixellated imaging CZT detector arrays for our first-generation balloon-borne wide-field hard X-ray (20 - 600 keV) telescope, ProtoEXIST1. Our ProtoEXIST program is a pathfinder for the High Energy Telescope (HET) on the Energetic X-ray Imaging Survey telescope (EXIST), a proposed implementation of the Black Hole Finder Probe. ProtoEXIST1 consists of four independent coded-aperture telescopes with close-tiled (~0.4 mm gaps) CZT detectors that preserve their 2.5mm pixel pitch. Multiple shielding/field-of-view configurations are planned to identify optimal geometry for the HET in EXIST. The primary technical challenge in ProtoEXIST is the development of large area, close-tiled modules of imaging CZT detectors (1000 cm2 for ProtoEXIST1), with all readout and control systems for the ASIC readout vertically stacked. We describe the overall telescope configuration of ProtoEXIST1 and review the current development status of the CZT detectors, from individual detector crystal units (DCUs) to a full detector module (DM). We have built the first units of each component for the detector plane and have completed a few Rev2 DCUs (2x2 cm2), which are under a series of tests. Bare DCUs (pre-crystal bonding) show high, uniform ASIC yield (~70%) and ~30% reduction in electronics noise compared to the Rev1 equivalent. A Rev1 DCU already achieved ~1.2% FWHM at 662 keV, and preliminary analysis of the initial radiation tests on a Rev2 DCU shows ~ 4 keV FWHM at 60 keV (vs. 4.7 keV for Rev1). We therefore expect about <~1% FWHM at 662 keV with the Rev2 detectors.

Abstract:We describe the detector development for a balloon-borne wide-field hard X-ray (20 - 600 keV) telescope, ProtoEXIST. ProtoEXIST is a pathfinder for both technology and science of the proposed implementation of the Black Hole Finder Probe, Energetic X-ray Imaging Survey telescope (EXIST). The principal technology challenge is the development of large area, close-tiled modules of imaging CZT detectors (1000 cm2 for ProtoEXIST1). We review the updates of the detector design and package concept for ProtoEXIST1 and report the current development status of the CZT detectors, using calibration results of our basic detector unit - 2 x 2 x 0.5 cm CZT crystals with 2.5 mm pixels (8 x 8 array). The current prototype (Rev1) of our detector crystal unit (DCU) shows ~4.5 keV electronics noise (FWHM), and the radiation measurements show the energy resolution (FWHM) of the units is 4.7 keV (7.9%) at 59.5 keV, 5.6 keV (4.6%) at 122 keV, and 7.6 keV (2.1%) at 356 keV. The new (Rev2) DCU with revised design is expected to improve the resolution by ~30%.

Design and Testing of a Prototype Pixellated CZT Detector and Shield for Hard X-Ray Astronomy

Abstract:We report on the design and laboratory testing of a prototype imaging CZT detector intended for balloon flight testing in April 2000. The detector tests several key techniques needed for the construction of large-area CZT arrays, as required for proposed hard X-ray astronomy missions. Two 10 mm x 10 mm x 5 mm CZT detectors, each with a 4 x 4 array of 1.9 mm pixels on a 2.5 mm pitch, will be mounted in a ``flip-chip'' fashion on a printed circuit board carrier card; the detectors will be placed 0.3 mm apart in a tiled configuration such that the pixel pitch is preserved across both crystals. One detector is eV Products high-pressure Bridgman CZT, and the other is IMARAD horizontal Bridgman material. Both detectors are read out by a 32-channel VA-TA ASIC controlled by a PC/104 single-board computer. A passive shield/collimator surrounded by plastic scintillator surrounds the detectors on five sides and provides a ~45 deg field of view. The background spectrum recorded by this instrument will be compared to that measured by a single-element CZT detector (10 mm x 10 mm x 2 mm high-pressure Bridgman material from eV Products) fitted with the same passive/plastic collimator but including an active BGO shield to the rear. This detector has been previously flown by us completely shielded by a passive cover. We describe preliminary laboratory results for the various systems, discuss initial background simulations, and describe our plans for balloon flight tests.

CdZnTe Background Measurement at Balloon Altitudes

Abstract:We report results of an experiment conducted in May 1997 to measure CdZnTe background and background reduction schemes in space flight conditions similar to those of proposed hard X-ray astrophysics missions. A 1 cm^2 CdZnTe detector was placed adjacent to a thick BGO anticoincidence shield and flown piggybacked onto the EXITE2 scientific balloon payload. The planar shield was designed to veto background countsproduced by local gamma-ray production in passive material and neutron interactions in the detector. The CdZnTe and BGO were partially surrounded by a Pb-Sn-Cu shield to approximate the grammage of an X-ray collimator, although the field of view was still ~2 pi sr. At an altitude of 127000 feet we find a reduction in background by a factor of 6 at 100 keV. The non-vetoed background is 9 X 10^{-4} cts /cm^2-sec-keV at 100 keV, about a factor of 2 higher than that of the collimated (4.5 deg FWHM) EXITE2 phoswich detector. We compare our recorded spectrum with that expected from simulations using GEANT and find agreement within a factor of 2 between 30 and 300 keV. We also compare our results with those of previous experiments using passive lead and active NaI shields, and discuss possible active shielding schemes in future astronomy missions employing large arrays of CdZnTe detectors.

Abstract:EBEX was a long-duration balloon-borne experiment to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. The experiment had three frequency bands centered at 150, 250, and 410 GHz and was the first to use a kilo-pixel array of transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers aboard a balloon platform; shortly after reaching float we operated 504, 342, and 109 TESs at each of the bands, respectively. We describe the design and characterization of the array and the readout system. We give the distributions of measured thermal conductances, normal resistances, and transition temperatures. With the exception of the thermal conductance at 150 GHz. We measured median low-loop-gain time constants $\tau_{0}=$ 88, 46, and 57 ms and compare them to predictions. Two measurements of bolometer absorption efficiency show high ($\sim$0.9) efficiency at 150 GHz and medium ($\sim$0.35, and $\sim$0.25) at the two higher bands, respectively. We measure a median total optical load of 3.6, 5.3 and 5.0 pW absorbed at the three bands, respectively. EBEX pioneered the use of the digital version of the frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) system which multiplexed the bias and readout of 16 bolometers onto two wires. We present accounting of the measured noise equivalent power. The median per-detector noise equivalent temperatures referred to a black body with a temperature of 2.725 K are 400, 920, and 14500 $\mu$K$\sqrt{s}$ for the three bands, respectively. We compare these values to our pre-flight predictions and to a previous balloon payload, discuss the sources of excess noise, and the path for a future payload to make full use of the balloon environment.

Abstract:The protoMIRAX hard X-ray imaging telescope is a balloon-borne experiment developed as a pathfinder for the MIRAX satellite mission. The experiment consists essentially in a coded-aperture hard X-ray (30-200 keV) imager with a square array (13$\times$13) of 2mm-thick planar CZT detectors with a total area of 169 cm$^2$. The total, fully-coded field-of-view is $21^{\circ}\times 21^{\circ}$ and the angular resolution is 1$^{\circ}$43'. In this paper we describe the protoMIRAX instrument and all the subsystems of its balloon gondola, and we show simulated results of the instrument performance. The main objective of protoMIRAX is to carry out imaging spectroscopy of selected bright sources to demonstrate the performance of a prototype of the MIRAX hard X-ray imager. Detailed background and imaging simulations have been performed for protoMIRAX balloon flights. The 3$\sigma$ sensitivity for the 30-200 keV range is ~1.9 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ for an integration time of 8 hs at an atmospheric depth of 2.7 g cm$^{-2}$ and an average zenith angle of 30$^{\circ}$. We have developed an attitude control system for the balloon gondola and new data handling and ground systems that also include prototypes for the MIRAX satellite. We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of the camera response at balloon altitudes, showing the expected background level and the detailed sensitivity of protoMIRAX. We also present the results of imaging simulations of the Crab region. The results show that protoMIRAX is capable of making spectral and imaging observations of bright hard X-ray source fields. Furthermore, the balloon observations will carry out very important tests and demonstrations of MIRAX hardware and software in a near space environment.

Abstract:The MIRAX X-ray observatory, the first Brazilian-led astrophysics space mission, is designed to perform an unprecedented wide-field, wide-band hard X-ray (5-200 keV) survey of Galactic X-ray transient sources. In the current configuration, MIRAX will carry a set of four coded-mask telescopes with high spatial resolution Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detector planes, each one consisting of an array of 64 closely tiled CZT pixelated detectors. Taken together, the four telescopes will have a total detection area of 959 cm^2, a large field of view (60x60 degrees FWHM), high angular resolution for this energy range (6 arcmin) and very good spectral resolution (~2 keV @ 60 keV). A stratospheric balloon-borne prototype of one of the MIRAX telescopes has been developed, tested and flown by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) as part of the ProtoEXIST program. In this paper we show results of validation and calibration tests with individual CZT detectors of the ProtoEXIST second generation experiment (P2). Each one of 64 detector units of the P2 detector plane consists of an ASIC, developed by Caltech for the NuSTAR telescope, hybridized to a CZT crystal with 0.6 mm pixel size. The performance of each detector was evaluated using radioactive sources in the laboratory. The calibration results show that the P2 detectors have average energy resolution of ~2.1 keV @ 60 keV and ~2.3 keV @ 122 keV. P2 was also successfully tested on near-space environment on a balloon flight, demonstrating the detector unit readiness for integration on a space mission telescope, as well as satisfying all MIRAX mission requirements.

Abstract:The BLAST Observatory is a proposed superpressure balloon-borne polarimeter designed for a future ultra-long duration balloon campaign from Wanaka, New Zealand. To maximize scientific output while staying within the stringent superpressure weight envelope, BLAST will feature new 1.8m off-axis optical system contained within a lightweight monocoque structure gondola. The payload will incorporate a 300L $^4$He cryogenic receiver which will cool 8,274 microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) to 100mK through the use of an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) in combination with a $^3$He sorption refrigerator all backed by a liquid helium pumped pot operating at 2K. The detector readout utilizes a new Xilinx RFSOC-based system which will run the next-generation of the BLAST-TNG KIDPy software. With this instrument we aim to answer outstanding questions about dust dynamics as well as provide community access to the polarized submillimeter sky made possible by high-altitude observing unrestricted by atmospheric transmission. The BLAST Observatory is designed for a minimum 31-day flight of which 70$\%$ will be dedicated to observations for BLAST scientific goals and the remaining 30$\%$ will be open to proposals from the wider astronomical community through a shared-risk proposals program.

Abstract:The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 2 (EUSO-SPB2) flew on May 13$^{\text{th}}$ and 14$^{\text{th}}$ of 2023. Consisting of two novel optical telescopes, the payload utilized next-generation instrumentation for the observations of extensive air showers from near space. One instrument, the fluorescence telescope (FT) searched for Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) by recording the atmosphere below the balloon in the near-UV with a 1~$\mu$s time resolution using 108 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes with a total of 6,912 channels. Validated by pre-flight measurements during a field campaign, the energy threshold was estimated around 2~EeV with an expected event rate of approximately 1 event per 10 hours of observation. Based on the limited time afloat, the expected number of UHECR observations throughout the flight is between 0 and 2. Consistent with this expectation, no UHECR candidate events have been found. The majority of events appear to be detector artifacts that were not rejected properly due to a shortened commissioning phase. Despite the earlier-than-expected termination of the flight, data were recorded which provide insights into the detectors stability in the near-space environment as well as the diffuse ultraviolet emissivity of the atmosphere, both of which are impactful to future experiments.

Abstract:The Next Generation Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST-TNG) is a submillimeter mapping experiment planned for a 28 day long-duration balloon (LDB) flight from McMurdo Station, Antarctica during the 2018-2019 season. BLAST-TNG will detect submillimeter polarized interstellar dust emission, tracing magnetic fields in galactic molecular clouds. BLAST-TNG will be the first polarimeter with the sensitivity and resolution to probe the $\sim$0.1 parsec-scale features that are critical to understanding the origin of structures in the interstellar medium. With three detector arrays operating at 250, 350, and 500 $\mu$m (1200, 857, and 600 GHz), BLAST-TNG will obtain diffraction-limited resolution at each waveband of 30, 41, and 59 arcseconds respectively. To achieve the submillimeter resolution necessary for its science goals, the BLAST-TNG telescope features a 2.5 m aperture carbon fiber composite primary mirror, one of the largest mirrors flown on a balloon platform. Successful performance of such a large telescope on a balloon-borne platform requires stiff, lightweight optical components and mounting structures. Through a combination of optical metrology and finite element modeling of thermal and mechanical stresses on both the telescope optics and mounting structures, we expect diffraction-limited resolution at all our wavebands. We expect pointing errors due to deformation of the telescope mount to be negligible. We have developed a detailed thermal model of the sun shielding, gondola, and optical components to optimize our observing strategy and increase the stability of the telescope over the flight. We present preflight characterization of the telescope and its platform.

Abstract:The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon II (EUSO-SPB2) launched from Wanaka, New Zealand on May 13th 2023. Consisting of two optical telescopes, EUSO-SPB2 aimed to search for very high energy neutrinos (E>PeV) via Cherenkov radiation, and ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, E>EeV) via ultraviolet fluorescence. Building on the EUSO-Balloon (2014) and EUSO-SPB1 (2017) missions, the Fluorescence Telescope (FT) comprises 108 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes at the focus of a one meter entrance diameter Schmidt telescope. The FT pointed down at the atmosphere below the SPB's altitude of 33 km. The mission duration was planned to reach up to 100 days. Prior to flight, the instrument was extensively tested in the laboratory and in the field. These measurements, combined with simulations led to an expected peak energy sensitivity around 3 EeV. Combined with a three-times-larger field-of-view than previous EUSO balloon missions, this resulted in an expected observation rate of one UHECR shower per ten hours of observation. The FT was expected to perform the first measurement of UHECRs via fluorescence from sub-orbital space, but was unable to, due to a shortened flight. Nonetheless, these observations of EUSO-SPB2 serve as a stepping stone to future satellite-based missions, such as the Probe of Extreme MultiMessenger Astrophysics (POEMMA), with enormous exposure to the highest energy cosmic rays with all sky coverage. In this contribution we will discuss the performance of the FT in flight as well as preliminary results.

Abstract:The E and B Experiment (EBEX) was a long-duration balloon-borne cosmic microwave background polarimeter that flew over Antarctica in 2013. We describe the experiment's optical system, receiver, and polarimetric approach, and report on their in-flight performance. EBEX had three frequency bands centered on 150, 250, and 410 GHz. To make efficient use of limited mass and space we designed a 115 cm$^{2}$sr high throughput optical system that had two ambient temperature mirrors and four anti-reflection coated polyethylene lenses per focal plane. All frequency bands shared the same optical train. Polarimetry was achieved with a continuously rotating achromatic half-wave plate (AHWP) that was levitated with a superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB). Rotation stability was 0.45 % over a period of 10 hours, and angular position accuracy was 0.01 degrees. This is the first use of a SMB in astrophysics. The measured modulation efficiency was above 90 % for all bands. To our knowledge the 109 % fractional bandwidth of the AHWP was the broadest implemented to date. The receiver that contained one lens and the AHWP at a temperature of 4 K, the polarizing grid and other lenses at 1 K, and the two focal planes at 0.25 K performed according to specifications giving focal plane temperature stability with fluctuation power spectrum that had $1/f$ knee at 2 mHz. EBEX was the first balloon-borne instrument to implement technologies characteristic of modern CMB polarimeters including high throughput optical systems, and large arrays of transition edge sensor bolometric detectors with mutiplexed readouts.

Abstract:ProtoEXIST2 (P2) was a prototype imaging X-ray detector plane developed for wide-field Time Domain Astrophysics (TDA) in the 5 - 200 keV energy band. It was composed of an 8 $\times$ 8 array of 5 mm thick, 2cm $\times$ 2cm pixelated (32 $\times$ 32) CdZnTe (CZT) detectors with a 0.6 mm pitch that utilize the NuSTAR ASIC(NuASIC) for readout. During the initial detector development process leading up to post-flight examination of the entire detector plane, distortions in expected pixel positions and shapes were observed in a significant fraction of the detectors. The HREXI (High Resolution Energetic X-ray Imager) Calibration Facility (HCF) was designed and commissioned to improve upon these early experiments and to rapidly map out and characterize pixel non-uniformities and defects within CZT detector planes at resolutions down to 50 $\rm \mu$m. Using this facility, the sub-pixel level detector response of P2 was measured at 100 $\rm \mu$m resolution and analyzed to extract and evaluate the area and profile of individual pixels, their morphology across the entire P2 detector plane for comparison with previous measurements and to provide additional characterization. In this article, we evaluate the imaging performance of a coded-aperture telescope using the observed pixel morphology for P2 detectors. This investigation will serve as an initial guide for detector selection in the development of HREXI detector planes, for the future implementation of the 4pi X-Ray Imaging Observatory (4piXIO) mission which aims to provide simultaneous and continuous imaging of the full sky ($\rm 4\pi$ sr) in the 3-200 keV energy band with $\rm \simeq$ 2 arcmin angular resolution and $\simeq$ 10 arcsec source localization, as well as other, future coded-aperture instruments.

Abstract:LXeGRIT is a balloon-borne Compton telescope for MeV gamma-ray astrophysics, based on a liquid xenon time projection chamber (LXe-TPC) with charge and light readout. The first balloon flights in 1997 revealed limitations of the trigger electronics and the data acquisition (DAQ) system, leading to their upgrade. New electronics was developed to handle the xenon scintillation light trigger. The original processor module was replaced by a commercial VME processor. The telemetry rate was doubled to 2 x 500 kbps and onboard data storage on hard disks was implemented. Relying on a robust real-time operating system, the new DAQ software adopts an object oriented design to implement the diverse tasks of trigger handling, data selection, transmission, and storage, as well as DAQ control and monitor functions. The new systems performed well during two flights in Spring 1999 and Fall 2000. In the 2000 flight, the DAQ system was able to handle 300-350 triggers/s out of a total of about 650 Hz, including charged particles.

Analysis of above-the-limb Cosmic Rays for EUSO-SPB2

Abstract:The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 2 (EUSO-SPB2) experiment is a pathfinder mission for future space-based instruments targeting the fluxes of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR), with energies exceeding 1EeV and very high energy diffuse and transient neutrinos, with energies exceeding 1PeV. Using two telescope designs: the Fluorescence Telescope (FT) and the Cherenkov Telescope (CT), EUSO-SPB2 made novel observations of the backgrounds relevant for space-based detection. EUSO-SPB2 will launch from Wanaka, NZ in Spring of 2023, for a long duration (up to 100d) flight at a nominal float altitude of 33km. In this contribution, we will focus on the CT's capability to measure cosmic rays from above Earth's limb via the Cherenkov emission produced by the resultant Extensive Air Showers (EAS). Using the EASCherSim optical Cherenkov generation code, we provide an updated estimate of the event rate of above-the-limb cosmic rays for the CT, taking into account updated values for the trigger efficiency as determined during the field testing of the instrument. We take particular care to consider the longitudinal development of EAS in rarefied atmosphere, accounting for the energy dependent elongation rate. In addition, we consider improvements to the magnetic field modeling present in EASCherSim and illustrate their impact on the observed events and detection thresholds. Finally, we compare these simulations to preliminary flight data from EUSO-SPB2.
