Abstract:Color transparency is the proposal that under certain circumstances the strong interactions can be reduced in magnitude. We give a comprehensive review of the physics, which hinges on the interface of perturbative QCD with non--perturbative strong interactions. Color transparency is complementary to {\it nuclear filtering}, which is the conversion of quark wave functions in hadrons to small transverse space dimensions by interaction with a nuclear medium. We review current approaches, including pictures based on modeling the time evolution of hadronic wave--packets as well as the use of light cone matrix elements. Spin plays an intrinsic role in testing and understanding the physics and is discussed at length. We emphasize the use of data analysis procedures which have minimal model dependence. We also review existing experimental data and the experimental program planned at various facilities. The subject has strong scientific complementarity and potential to make progress in exploring hadron physics at current and future facilities.

Abstract:We review a unique prediction of Quantum Chromo Dynamics, called color transparency (CT), where the final (and/or initial) state interactions of hadrons with the nuclear medium must vanish for exclusive processes at high momentum transfers. We retrace the progress of our understanding of this phenomenon, which began with the discovery of the $J/\psi$ meson, followed by the discovery of high energy CT phenomena, the recent developments in the investigations of the onset of CT at intermediate energies and the directions for future studies.

Abstract:Color transparency (CT) is an effect of suppression of nuclear shadowing of hard reactions, closely related to the color screening. A brief review of theoretical development and experimental search for CT, failed and successful, are presented. A special emphasis is made on a quantum-mechanical nature of CT, as opposed to a wide spread erroneousclassical treatment of this phenomenon. The typical predictions of the classical approach, all contradicting quantum mechanics are: - factorization of cross section of hard reactions on a nucleus;\\ - "nuclear transparency", a normalized ratio of nuclear to nucleon cross sections, cannot exceed one;\\ - the larger is a radius of a hadron, the stronger it attenuates in a nucleus;\\ - the higher is the energy of hadrons participating in a hard reaction, the less is the nuclear attenuation;\\ - due to CT hard processes provide a better opportunity to study Fermi-momentum distribution, than soft reactions; etc. (Talk presented at XXVIII Rencontres de Moriond, March 1993)

Abstract:A recent experiment [{\bf Phys. Rev. Lett. 126,082301 (2021)}] used the $(e,e'p)$ reaction on $^{12}$C to search for the effects of color transparency (the absence of final state interactions). Color transparency was said to be ruled out. The ability to observe the effects of color transparency depends on the ability of a putative point-like-configuration (PLC), formed in a high-momentum transfer coherent reaction, to escape the nucleus without expanding its size. We study the expansion aspect of color transparency using superconformal baryon-meson symmetry and light-front holographic QCD. A new formalism is obtained and used to analyze the recent experiment. The resulting conclusion is that effects of expansion would not be sufficiently significant in causing final state interactions to occur. Therefore we conclude that a PLC was not formed. This means that the Feynman mechanism involving virtual photon absorption on a single high momentum quark is responsible for high momentum electromagnetic form factor of the proton.

Color transparency in hard $pd$ collisions

Abstract:As one of the predictions of perturbative QCD, the effect of color transparency has been the focus of attention in the community studying modifications of hadrons in nuclear medium for several decades. The search for this effect in reactions involving heavy nuclei can be complicated by uncertainties in nuclear characteristics (nucleon density distributions and wave functions), which can affect the interpretation of experiments. In this work, we consider the reaction $d(p,pp)n$ at $p_{\rm lab}=15$ GeV/c caused by hard elastic $pp$ scattering, in which these uncertainties are actually reduced to the behavior of the deuteron wave function at large momenta. It is shown that for transverse momenta of the spectator neutron $\leq 0.4$ GeV/c the choice of the deuteron wave function cannot affect the identification of the color transparency effect. A simple method for studying color transparency in $dd$ collisions is also suggested based on the identification of quasi-free $pd$ interactions.

Abstract:Anytime algorithms offer a tradeoff between solution quality and computation time that has proved useful in applying artificial intelligence techniques to time-critical problems. To exploit this tradeoff, a system must be able to determine the best time to stop deliberation and act on the currently available solution. When the rate of improvement of solution quality is uncertain, monitoring the progress of the algorithm can improve the utility of the system. This paper introduces a technique for run-time monitoring of anytime algorithms that is sensitive to the variance of the algorithm's performance, the time-dependent utility of a solution, the ability of the run-time monitor to estimate the quality of the currently available solution, and the cost of monitoring. The paper examines the conditions under which the technique is optimal and demonstrates its applicability.

Abstract:With the current highest beam energy at Jefferson Lab and traditional methods, we have exhausted our sensitivity for observing the onset of proton color transparency in a nucleus in A(e,e'p) parallel scattering kinematics for up to $Q^{2}$ = 14 GeV$^{2}$ . One of the disadvantages in A(e,e'p) experiments is that even if a point-like color singlet is produced at such $Q^{2}$, its expansion is unconstrained over the full radius of the nuclei, with the potential to significantly reduce the size of the color transparency effect. Therefore, in order to be sensitive to the effects of color transparency, we enhance the sensitivity of the measurement to the production of a point-like color neutral object prior to the onset of wave-function expansion. In this experiment, we propose a color transparency measurement in maximal rescattering ("dirty") kinematics in deuterium where final-state interactions (FSIs) are known to be huge effects, thereby enhancing our sensitivity to a reduction in FSIs indicative of color transparency. The kinematics in exclusive processes in deuterium can be precisely chosen such that the inter-nucleon distances of the struck and spectator nucleon lead to well-controlled FSIs.

Abstract:Quasi-elastic scattering on $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ was measured in Hall C at Jefferson Lab for space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ in the range of 8--14.2\,(GeV/$c$)$^2$ with proton momenta up to 8.3\,GeV/$c$. The experiment was carried out in the upgraded Hall C at Jefferson Lab. It used the existing high momentum spectrometer and the new super high momentum spectrometer to detect the scattered electrons and protons in coincidence. The nuclear transparency was extracted as the ratio of the measured yield to the yield calculated in the plane wave impulse approximation. Additionally, the transparency of the $1s_{1/2}$ and $1p_{3/2}$ shell protons in $^{12}$C was extracted, and the asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution was examined for hints of the quantum chromodynamics prediction of Color Transparency. All of these results were found to be consistent with traditional nuclear physics and inconsistent with the onset of Color Transparency.

Abstract:Within a light-cone QCD formalism based on the Green function technique incorporating color transparency, coherence length effects and gluon shadowing we study electroproduction of vector mesons off nuclei. We found rather large color transparency effects in the range of Q^2 < 10-20 GeV^2. They are stronger at low than at high energies and can be easily identified by HERMES or at JLab. We provide predictions for incoherent and coherent vector meson production for future measurements.

Abstract:We review the theoretical interpretation of deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at low values of the Bjorken variable $x \simeq Q^2/W^2 \lsim 0.1$. The process proceeds via the interaction of quark-antiquark $(q \bar q)$ color-dipole fluctuations of the (virtual) photon with the proton. In terms of the forward Compton scattering amplitude, two reaction channels contribute to the interaction of the $q \bar q$ color dipole with the gluon field in the proton. Dependent on the kinematics, there is either {\it color transparency}, corresponding to a cancellation of the amplitudes for the two reaction channels, or {\it saturation}, occuring when the process is dominated by a single interaction channel. The connection between the color-dipole picture and the pQCD improved parton model is elaborated upon.

Abstract:Quasielastic $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ scattering was measured at space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$~=~8, 9.4, 11.4, and 14.2 (GeV/c)$^2$, the highest ever achieved to date. Nuclear transparency for this reaction was extracted by comparing the measured yield to that expected from a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation without any final state interactions. The measured transparency was consistent with no $Q^2$ dependence, up to proton momenta of 8.5~GeV/c, ruling out the quantum chromodynamics effect of color transparency at the measured $Q^2$ scales in exclusive $(e,e'p)$ reactions. These results impose strict constraints on models of color transparency for protons.

Abstract:The process $\pi + A$ leading to a pair of mini-jets at high relative transverse momentum ($k_t \gsim 2$ GeV) while leaving the nucleus in its ground state was selected as a definitive test of the existence of color transparency by Frankfurt, Miller and Strikman in 1993. The preliminary results of Fermilab experiment E791, led by Ashery and Weiss-Babai, show a strong A-dependence, consistent with the notion of color transparency.

Abstract:The cross section between a $c \bar c$ pair and a nucleon is small and sensitive to the $c - \bar c$ separation if the pair is in a color-singlet state, but very large and insensitive to the separation if it is in a color-octet state. We use this property in an absorption model involving both color components to deduce the color structure of $c \bar c$ pairs produced in $p(B)A \to \psi X$ reactions. Our analysis shows that the NA3, NA38 and E772 data are not inconsistent with the theoretical picture that color-octet and color-singlet precursors are produced in roughly equal proportions if the produced color-singlet precursors are pointlike and transparent. However, if the color-singlet precursors are not transparent but have a cross section of a few mb, these data do show a definite preference for a larger fraction of color-singlet precursors. In either case, the color-octet fraction increases with $x_F$, approaching unity as $x_F$ becomes large.

Abstract:By engineering and manipulating quantum entanglement between incoming photons and experimental apparatus, we construct single-photon detectors which cannot distinguish between photons of very different wavelengths. These color erasure detectors enable a new kind of intensity interferometry, with potential applications in microscopy and astronomy. We demonstrate chromatic interferometry experimentally, observing robust interference using both coherent and incoherent photon sources.

Abstract:Color flux tubes are a standard perspective from which to understand stopping in high-energy collisions. Mechanisms for baryon transport and polarization within a tube are considered here, both in regards to the the transport of baryons from the target and projectile toward mid-rapidity, and in regards to the correlations of baryon-antibaryon pairs created in the tube. The roles of tube merging and gluon radiation with a tube are emphasized.
