Abstract:As one of the predictions of perturbative QCD, the effect of color transparency has been the focus of attention in the community studying modifications of hadrons in nuclear medium for several decades. The search for this effect in reactions involving heavy nuclei can be complicated by uncertainties in nuclear characteristics (nucleon density distributions and wave functions), which can affect the interpretation of experiments. In this work, we consider the reaction $d(p,pp)n$ at $p_{\rm lab}=15$ GeV/c caused by hard elastic $pp$ scattering, in which these uncertainties are actually reduced to the behavior of the deuteron wave function at large momenta. It is shown that for transverse momenta of the spectator neutron $\leq 0.4$ GeV/c the choice of the deuteron wave function cannot affect the identification of the color transparency effect. A simple method for studying color transparency in $dd$ collisions is also suggested based on the identification of quasi-free $pd$ interactions.

Abstract:We review a unique prediction of Quantum Chromo Dynamics, called color transparency (CT), where the final (and/or initial) state interactions of hadrons with the nuclear medium must vanish for exclusive processes at high momentum transfers. We retrace the progress of our understanding of this phenomenon, which began with the discovery of the $J/\psi$ meson, followed by the discovery of high energy CT phenomena, the recent developments in the investigations of the onset of CT at intermediate energies and the directions for future studies.

Abstract:With the current highest beam energy at Jefferson Lab and traditional methods, we have exhausted our sensitivity for observing the onset of proton color transparency in a nucleus in A(e,e'p) parallel scattering kinematics for up to $Q^{2}$ = 14 GeV$^{2}$ . One of the disadvantages in A(e,e'p) experiments is that even if a point-like color singlet is produced at such $Q^{2}$, its expansion is unconstrained over the full radius of the nuclei, with the potential to significantly reduce the size of the color transparency effect. Therefore, in order to be sensitive to the effects of color transparency, we enhance the sensitivity of the measurement to the production of a point-like color neutral object prior to the onset of wave-function expansion. In this experiment, we propose a color transparency measurement in maximal rescattering ("dirty") kinematics in deuterium where final-state interactions (FSIs) are known to be huge effects, thereby enhancing our sensitivity to a reduction in FSIs indicative of color transparency. The kinematics in exclusive processes in deuterium can be precisely chosen such that the inter-nucleon distances of the struck and spectator nucleon lead to well-controlled FSIs.

Abstract:Quasi-elastic scattering on $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ was measured in Hall C at Jefferson Lab for space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ in the range of 8--14.2\,(GeV/$c$)$^2$ with proton momenta up to 8.3\,GeV/$c$. The experiment was carried out in the upgraded Hall C at Jefferson Lab. It used the existing high momentum spectrometer and the new super high momentum spectrometer to detect the scattered electrons and protons in coincidence. The nuclear transparency was extracted as the ratio of the measured yield to the yield calculated in the plane wave impulse approximation. Additionally, the transparency of the $1s_{1/2}$ and $1p_{3/2}$ shell protons in $^{12}$C was extracted, and the asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution was examined for hints of the quantum chromodynamics prediction of Color Transparency. All of these results were found to be consistent with traditional nuclear physics and inconsistent with the onset of Color Transparency.

Abstract:Quasielastic $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ scattering was measured at space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$~=~8, 9.4, 11.4, and 14.2 (GeV/c)$^2$, the highest ever achieved to date. Nuclear transparency for this reaction was extracted by comparing the measured yield to that expected from a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation without any final state interactions. The measured transparency was consistent with no $Q^2$ dependence, up to proton momenta of 8.5~GeV/c, ruling out the quantum chromodynamics effect of color transparency at the measured $Q^2$ scales in exclusive $(e,e'p)$ reactions. These results impose strict constraints on models of color transparency for protons.

Abstract:The physics observables dedicated to the study of color transparency are diverse. After a brief pedagogical introduction, we emphasize the complementarity of the nuclear filtering and color transparency concepts. The importance of quantum interferences leads to suspect pictures based on the preparation of a squeezed state of small transverse size leading to a rapid transverse expansion. The different roles of heavy and light nuclei are emphasized. The possibility of color transparency tests in the vacuum is stressed. Such a test may be quickly addressed in the virtual Compton scattering reactions at CEBAF or HERMES energies.

Abstract:Color transparency (CT) is an effect of suppression of nuclear shadowing of hard reactions, closely related to the color screening. A brief review of theoretical development and experimental search for CT, failed and successful, are presented. A special emphasis is made on a quantum-mechanical nature of CT, as opposed to a wide spread erroneousclassical treatment of this phenomenon. The typical predictions of the classical approach, all contradicting quantum mechanics are: - factorization of cross section of hard reactions on a nucleus;\\ - "nuclear transparency", a normalized ratio of nuclear to nucleon cross sections, cannot exceed one;\\ - the larger is a radius of a hadron, the stronger it attenuates in a nucleus;\\ - the higher is the energy of hadrons participating in a hard reaction, the less is the nuclear attenuation;\\ - due to CT hard processes provide a better opportunity to study Fermi-momentum distribution, than soft reactions; etc. (Talk presented at XXVIII Rencontres de Moriond, March 1993)

Abstract:Three body decays can exhibit CP violation that arises from interfering diagrams with different orderings of the final state particles. We construct several momentum asymmetry observables that are accessible in a hadron collider environment where some of the final state particles are not reconstructed and not all the kinematic information can be extracted. We discuss the complications that arise from the different possible production mechanisms of the decaying particle. Examples involving heavy neutralino decays in supersymmetric theories and heavy Majorana neutrino decays in Type-I seesaw models are examined.

Nuclear transparencies with a two-step process of the $A(e,e'π^+)$ reaction

Abstract:Nuclear transparency in pion-induced nuclear reactions has been investigated based on Glauber multiple scattering theory considering a two-step process within the framework of vector meson dominance (VMD). In the present context, the application of the quantum diffusion model (QDM) to the Glauber theory plays a role in explaining the dependence of the transparency on the four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$. The short-range correlation (SRC) considered further gives the contribution to the magnitude of the transparency by a constant amount independent of the $Q^2$ variation, and the results from the QDM and SRC overestimate the experimental data. The inclusion of the two-step process with the $\rho N$ scattering cross section, $\sigma_{\rho N}=3 $ mb has the effect of reducing the transparency and thus leads to a good agreement with the experimental data on the reaction $A(e,e'\pi^+)$ for $^{12}$C, $^{27}$Al, $^{63}$Cu and $^{197}$Au nuclei.

Abstract:Within a light-cone QCD formalism based on the Green function technique incorporating color transparency, coherence length effects and gluon shadowing we study electroproduction of vector mesons off nuclei. We found rather large color transparency effects in the range of Q^2 < 10-20 GeV^2. They are stronger at low than at high energies and can be easily identified by HERMES or at JLab. We provide predictions for incoherent and coherent vector meson production for future measurements.

Abstract:A recent experiment [{\bf Phys. Rev. Lett. 126,082301 (2021)}] used the $(e,e'p)$ reaction on $^{12}$C to search for the effects of color transparency (the absence of final state interactions). Color transparency was said to be ruled out. The ability to observe the effects of color transparency depends on the ability of a putative point-like-configuration (PLC), formed in a high-momentum transfer coherent reaction, to escape the nucleus without expanding its size. We study the expansion aspect of color transparency using superconformal baryon-meson symmetry and light-front holographic QCD. A new formalism is obtained and used to analyze the recent experiment. The resulting conclusion is that effects of expansion would not be sufficiently significant in causing final state interactions to occur. Therefore we conclude that a PLC was not formed. This means that the Feynman mechanism involving virtual photon absorption on a single high momentum quark is responsible for high momentum electromagnetic form factor of the proton.

The color dipole approach to the Drell-Yan process in pA collisions

Abstract:In the target rest frame and at high energies, Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production looks like bremsstrahlung of massive photons, rather than parton annihilation. The projectile quark is decomposed into a series of Fock states. Configurations with fixed transverse separations are interaction eigenstates for pp scattering. The DY cross section can then be expressed in terms of the same color dipole cross section as DIS. This approach is especially suitable to describe nuclear effects, since it allows to apply Glauber multiple scattering theory. We go beyond the Glauber eikonal approximation by taking into account transitions between interaction eigenstates. We calculate nuclear shadowing at large Feynman-x_F for DY in proton-nucleus collisions, compare to existing data from E772 and make predictions for RHIC. Nuclear effects on the transverse momentum distribution are also investigated.

Abstract:Azimuthal asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of a real photon from an unpolarized deuterium target are measured with respect to beam helicity and charge. They appear in the distribution of these photons in the azimuthal angle phi around the virtual-photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The extracted asymmetries are attributed to either the deeply virtual Compton scattering process or its interference with the Bethe-Heitler process. They are compared with earlier results on the proton target. In the measured kinematic region, the beam-charge asymmetry amplitudes and the leading amplitudes of the beam-helicity asymmetries on an unpolarized deuteron target are compatible with the results from unpolarized protons.
Study of the azimuthal asymmetry in heavy ion collisions combining initial state momentum orientation and final state collective effects

Abstract:In the present work we investigate the source of azimuthal asymmetry for nuclear collision using a model that contemplates particles produced in the initial hard collisions and the collective effects described by a Blast-Wave like expansion. The latter is described by the relaxation time approximation of the Boltzmann transport equation. The parameters regarding collective flow and asymmetry are fitted by the experimental data from $p_T$ spectrum and $v_2$ for PbPb and XeXe collisions at different centrality classes. As a by-product the ratio of final elliptic flow with the initial anisotropy, $v_2/\epsilon_2$, and the average transverse momentum are predicted.

Cronin effect in the Drell-Yan reaction

Abstract:We explore the mechanism of transverse momentum broadening of fast quarks propagating in nuclei, using Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum distributions measured in the experiment E866 at FermiLab with beams of 800 GeV protons. Our theoretical analysis is based on the color dipole approach in the target rest frame, which has provided a successful phenomenological description of a variety of hadronic reactions. The present application is relevant to the regime of short coherence length (SCL), where the spatial extent of the fluctuations of the projectile responsible for the Drell-Yan reaction is short compared to the internucleon spacing. In this limit, momentum broadening comes from initial state interactions and is described as color filtering, i.e. absorption of large-size dipoles leading to diminished transverse separation and hence enhanced transverse momentum. The predictions we present are in good agreement with the E866 data. The interactions leading to the acquisition of transverse momentum arise from the color-dipole cross section determined previously from deep-inelastic scattering on proton targets. Aside from the determination of the color-dipole cross section, no other phenomenological input is needed to explain the experimental results. The mean-square momentum broadening of dileptons determined in a recent separate analysis of the data is likewise well described by our theory. These results confirm that the origin of momentum broadening in DY is the color dipole cross section mediating soft initial state interactions between the parton of the projectile that initiates the reaction and the nucleons of the nucleus, as provided by the color dipole description. Predictions for broadening observables at RHIC are presented.

Abstract:We examine the leptonic forward-backward and polarization (left-right) asymmetries in the dileptonic B -> X_s l^+ l^- decay when the momentum dependence of $\psi$ and $\psi'-\gamma$ conversion strength is taken into account. The results indicate only a small shift in the asymmetry distributions.

Abstract:We review the theoretical interpretation of deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at low values of the Bjorken variable $x \simeq Q^2/W^2 \lsim 0.1$. The process proceeds via the interaction of quark-antiquark $(q \bar q)$ color-dipole fluctuations of the (virtual) photon with the proton. In terms of the forward Compton scattering amplitude, two reaction channels contribute to the interaction of the $q \bar q$ color dipole with the gluon field in the proton. Dependent on the kinematics, there is either {\it color transparency}, corresponding to a cancellation of the amplitudes for the two reaction channels, or {\it saturation}, occuring when the process is dominated by a single interaction channel. The connection between the color-dipole picture and the pQCD improved parton model is elaborated upon.

Abstract:As a new observable for heavy flavor correlations the momentum imbalance A(D) of D mesons is proposed. It is defined analogously to the jet momentum imbalance A(J) of fully reconstructed jets. However, because D mesons are flavor-tagged particles, no jet reconstruction is necessary. A(D) quantifies the influence of the medium created in heavy-ion collisions on correlated charm pairs. We present results with the partonic transport model Boltzmann approach to multiparton scatterings, which describes well the nuclear modification factor and elliptic flow of all heavy flavor particles at BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The A(D) distribution in heavy-ion collisions at LHC is shifted to larger values of A(D) compared to proton-proton collisions. We argue that this shift is attributable to medium effects and can be explained partially by a path-length imbalance of charm pairs and partially by momentum fluctuations in the initial charm-pair distribution.

Abstract:This study examines the influence of the following five factors on missing mass distributions, radiative effects, admixtures from other channels, detector resolution, Fermi smearing, and final state interactions with spectator nucleons. All factors are considered independently of each other. The examination is supported by theoretical calculations and exemplified by distributions of the quantities $M^{2}_{X[0]}$ and $M^{2}_{X[\pi^{-}]}$ that are produced by the Monte Carlo simulation for the double-pion electroproduction off protons. The study also includes a naive modeling of kinematic effects of final state interactions with spectator nucleons.
