Abstract:We review the main methods used to study spin glasses. In the first part, we focus on methods for fully connected models and systems defined on a tree, such as the replica method, the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer formalism, the cavity method, and the dynamical mean-field theory. In the second part, we deal with the description of low-dimensional systems, mostly in three spatial dimensions, which are mostly studied through numerical simulations. We conclude by mentioning some of the main open problems in the field.

Abstract:Abstract This article reviews the 40+ year old spin-glass field and one of its earliest model interpretations as a spin density wave. Our description is from an experimental phenomenological point of view with emphasis on new spin glass materials and their relation to topical problems and strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. We first simply define a spin glass (SG), give its basic ingredients and explain how the spin glasses enter into the statistical mechanics of classical phase transitions. We then consider the four basic experimental properties to solidly characterize canonical spin glass behavior and introduce the early theories and models. Here the spin density wave (SDW) concept is used to explain the difference between a short-range SDW, i.e. a SG and, in contrast, a long-range SDW, i.e. a conventional magnetic phase transition. We continue with the present state of SG, its massive computer simulations and recent proposals of chiral glasses and quantum SG. We then collect and mention the various SG ‘spin-off’s'. A major section uncovers the fashionable unconventional materials that display SG-like freezing and glassy ground states, such as (high temperature) superconductors, heavy fermions, intermetallics and Heuslers, pyrochlor and spinels, oxides and chalogenides and exotics, e.g. quasicrystals. Some conclusions and future directions complete the review.

Exact Solution for the Transverse Field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Spin Glass Model with Continuous-Time Quantum Monte Carlo Method

Abstract:We construct the first complete exact numerical solution of a mean field quantum spin glass model, the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, by implementing a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method in the presence of full replica symmetry breaking. We extract the full numerically exact phase diagram, displaying a glassy phase with continuous replica symmetry breaking at small transverse fields and low temperatures. A paramagnetic phase emerges once thermal and quantum fluctuations melt the spin glass. We characterize both phases by extracting the order parameter, as well as the static and dynamical local spin susceptibilities. The static susceptibility shows a plateau in the glassy phase, but remains smooth across the phase boundary, while the shape of dynamical susceptibility varies upon crossing the glass transition by reducing quantum fluctuations. We qualitatively compare these results to a.c. susceptibility measurements on dipole-coupled Ising magnets in a transverse magnetic field. Our work provides a general framework for the exact numerical solution of mean field quantum glass models, constituting an important step towards understanding glassiness in realistic systems.

Abstract:We present a numerical study of the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. We analize the overlap distribution between the configurations visited at the time t and in particular its scaling behaviour with the size of the system. We find two different non-equilibrium dynamical regimes. The first is a proper Out of Equilibrium Regime, that is the relevant regime for the dynamics of an infinite system. The second is an Intermediate Regime that separates the Out of Equilibrium Regime from equilibrium. After studying the crossover beetween the two regimes, we focus on the Out of Equilibrium Regime and we reveal some of the geometrical features of phase space. According to recent analitical work, we find that the asymptotic out of equilibrium energy density is the equilibrium one. The same happens to the staggered-magnetisation, suggesting there is a deep geometrical similarity between equilibrium and out of equilibrium configurations. A procedure, that we call clonation, shows that the dynamics follows sort of canyons, as opposed to a system of independent traps.

Abstract:This review presents various aspects of a mean-field spin glass model known as the p-spin spherical spin glass model, which has raised a lot of interest in the study of spin glasses, and also for its possible links with a mean-field theory of structural glasses. This preprint contains no new results and is therefore not intended to be published, but its aim is to present a collection of results and formulas concerning this very rich model. It is in fact the english translation of one of the chapters of my PhD thesis (``Quelques aspects de la dynamique hors d'equilibre des verres de spin'', ``Some aspects of the out of equilibrium dynamics of spin glasses''). Abstract:We investigate the Lévy glass, a mean-field spin-glass model with power-law distributed couplings characterized by a divergent second moment. By combining extensively many small couplings with a spare random backbone of strong bonds the model is intermediate between the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and the Viana-Bray models. A truncated version where couplings smaller than some threshold ε are neglected can be studied within the cavity method developed for spin glasses on locally treelike random graphs. By performing the limit ε→0 in a well-defined way we calculate the thermodynamic functions within replica symmetry and determine the de Almeida-Thouless line in the presence of an external magnetic field. Contrary to previous findings we show that there is no replica-symmetric spin-glass phase. Moreover we determine the leading corrections to the ground-state energy within one-step replica symmetry breaking. The effects due to the breaking of replica symmetry appear to be small in accordance with the intuitive picture that a few strong bonds per spin reduce the degree of frustration in the system.

Abstract:Models with range-free frustrated Ising spin- and Hubbard interaction are treated exactly by means of the discrete time slicing method. Critical and tricritical points, correlations, and the fermion propagator, are derived as a function of temperature T, chemical potential \mu, Hubbard coupling U, and spin glass energy J. The phase diagram is obtained. Replica symmetry breaking (RSB)-effects are evaluated up to four-step order (4RSB). The use of exact relations together with the 4RSB-solutions allow to model exact solutions by interpolation. For T=0, our numerical results provide strong evidence that the exact density of states in the spin glass pseudogap regime obeys \rho(E)=const |E-E_F| for energies close to the Fermi level. Rapid convergence of \rho'(E_F) under increasing order of RSB is observed. The leading term resembles the Efros-Shklovskii Coulomb pseudogap of localized disordered fermionic systems in 2D. Beyond half filling we obtain a quadratic dependence of the fermion filling factor on the chemical potential. We find a half filling transition between a phase for U>\mu, where the Fermi level lies inside the Hubbard gap, into a phase where \mu(>U) is located at the center of the upper spin glass pseudogap (SG-gap). For \mu>U the Hubbard gap combines with the lower one of two SG-gaps (phase I), while for \mu<U it joins the sole SG-gap of the half-filling regime (phase II). We predict scaling behaviour at the continuous half filling transition. Implications of the half-filling transition between the deeper insulating phase II and phase I for delocalization due to hopping processes in itinerant model extensions are discussed and metal-insulator transition scenarios described.

Overlap of a spherical spin glass model with microscopic external field

Abstract:We examine the behavior of the 2-spin spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model with an external field by analyzing the overlap of a spin with the external field. Previous research has noted that, at low temperature, this overlap exhibits dramatically different behavior in the presence of an external field as compared to the model with no external field. The transition between those two settings was examined in a recent physics paper by Baik, Collins-Woodfin, Le Doussal, and Wu as well as a recent math paper by Landon and Sosoe. Both papers focus on the setting in which the external field strength, $h$, approaches zero as the dimension, $N$, approaches infinity. In particular, the paper of Baik et al studies the overlap with a microscopic external field ($h\sim N^{-1/2}$) but without a rigorous proof. This paper aims to give a proof of that result. The proof involves representing the generating function of the overlap as a ratio of contour integrals and then analyzing the asymptotics of those contour integrals using results from random matrix theory.

The free energy of a quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model for weak disorder

Abstract:We extend two rigorous results of Aizenman, Lebowitz, and Ruelle in their pioneering paper of 1987 on the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model without external magnetic field to the quantum case with a "transverse field" of strength $b$. More precisely, if the Gaussian disorder is weak in the sense that its standard deviation $v>0$ is smaller than the temperature $1/\beta$, then the (random) free energy almost surely equals the annealed free energy in the macroscopic limit and there is no spin-glass phase for any $b/v\geq0$. The macroscopic annealed free energy (times $\beta$) turns out to be non-trivial and given, for any $\beta v>0$, by the global minimum of a certain functional of square-integrable functions on the unit square according to a Varadhan large-deviation principle. For $\beta v<1$ we determine this minimum up to the order $(\beta v)^4$ with the Taylor coefficients explicitly given as functions of $\beta b$ and with a remainder not exceeding $(\beta v)^6/16$. As a by-product we prove that the so-called static approximation to the minimization problem yields the wrong $\beta b$-dependence even to lowest order. Our main tool for dealing with the non-commutativity of the spin-operator components is a probabilistic representation of the Boltzmann-Gibbs operator by a Feynman-Kac (path-integral) formula based on an independent collection of Poisson processes in the positive half-line with common rate $\beta b$. Its essence dates back to Kac in 1956, but the formula was published only in 1989 by Gaveau and Schulman.

Abstract:We review our earlier studies on the order parameter distribution of the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model. Through Monte Carlo technique, we investigate the behavior of the order parameter distribution at finite temperatures. The zero temperature study of the spin glass order parameter distribution is made by the exact diagonalization method. We find in low-temperature (high-transverse-field) spin glass region, the tail (extended up to zero value of order parameter) and width of the order parameter distribution become zero in thermodynamic limit. Such observations clearly suggest the existence of a low-temperature (high-transverse-field) ergodic region. We also find in high-temperature (low-transverse-field) spin glass phase the order parameter distribution has nonzero value for all values of the order parameter even in infinite system size limit, which essentially indicates the nonergodic behavior of the system. We study the annealing dynamics by the paths which pass through both ergodic and nonergodic spin glass regions. We find the average annealing time becomes system size independent for the paths which pass through the quantum-fluctuation-dominated ergodic spin glass region. In contrast to that, the annealing time becomes strongly system size dependent for annealing down through the classical-fluctuation-dominated nonergodic spin glass region. We investigate the behavior of the spin autocorrelation in the spin glass phase. We observe that the decay rate of autocorrelation towards its equilibrium value is much faster in the ergodic region with respect to the nonergodic region of the spin glass phase.

Abstract:Spin glasses are paradigmatic models that deliver concepts relevant for a variety of systems. However, rigorous analytical results are difficult to obtain for spin-glass models, in particular for realistic short-range models. Therefore large-scale numerical simulations are the tool of choice. Concepts and algorithms derived from the study of spin glasses have been applied to diverse fields in computer science and physics. In this work a one-dimensional long-range spin-glass model with power-law interactions is discussed. The model has the advantage over conventional systems in that by tuning the power-law exponent of the interactions the effective space dimension can be changed thus effectively allowing the study of large high-dimensional spin-glass systems to address questions as diverse as the existence of an Almeida-Thouless line, ultrametricity and chaos in short range spin glasses. Furthermore, because the range of interactions can be changed, the model is a formidable test-bed for optimization algorithms.

Abstract:This paper studies spin glass to paramagnetic transition in the Spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model with ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss interaction with coupling constant $J$ and inverse temperature $\beta$. The disorder of the system is represented by a general Wigner matrix. We confirm a conjecture of \cite{Baik2016} and \cite{Baik2017}, that the critical window of temperatures for this transition is $\beta = 1 + bN^{-1/3} \sqrt{\log N}$ with $b\in\mathbb{R}$. The limiting distribution of the scaled free energy is Gaussian for negative $b$ and a weighted linear combination of independent Gaussian and Tracy-Widom components for positive $b$. In the special case where the Wigner matrix is from the Gaussian Orthogonal or Unitary Ensemble, we describe the triple point transition between spin glass, paramagnetic, and ferromagnetic regimes in a critical window for $(\beta, J)$ around the triple point $(1,1)$: the Tracy-Widom component is replaced by the one parameter family of deformations described by Bloemendal and Virag, \cite{BloVirI}.

Abstract:The interpolation method for mean field spin glass models developed by Guerra and Talagrand is extended to a quantum mean field spin glass model. This extension enables us to obtain both replica-symmetric (RS) and one step replica-symmetry breaking (1RSB) solutions of the free energy density in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. It is shown that the RS solution is exact in the paramagnetic phase. We provide a sufficient condition on coupling constants where the 1RSB solution gives better bound than the RS one. This condition reduced to physical quantities in disordered single spin systems allows a simple computer-assisted proof for the existence of the de Almeida-Thouless-type instability.

Abstract:The study of spin-glass dynamics, long considered the paradigmatic complex system, has reached important milestones. The availability of high-quality single crystals has allowed the experimental measurement of spin-glass coherence lengths of almost macroscopic dimensions, while the advent of special-purpose massive computers enables dynamical simulations that approach experimental time and length scales. This review provides an account of the quantitative convergence of these two avenues of research, with precise experimental measurements of the expected scaling laws and numerical reproduction of classic experimental results, such as memory and rejuvenation. The article opens with a brief review of the defining spin-glass properties, randomness and frustration, and their experimental consequences. These apparently simple characteristics are shown to generate rich and complex physics. Models are introduced that enable quantitative descriptions. After a summary of the main numerical results in equilibrium, paying particular attention to the concept of temperature chaos, this review examines off-equilibrium dynamics in the absence of a magnetic field and shows how it can be related to equilibrium structures through the fluctuation-dissipation relations. The nonlinear response at a given temperature is then developed, including experiments and scaling in the vicinity of the transition temperature $T_\mathrm{g}$. The consequences of temperature change -- including temperature chaos, rejuvenation, and memory -- are reviewed. The interpretation of these phenomena requires identifying several length scales relevant to dynamics, which, in turn, generate new insights. Finally, issues for future investigations are introduced, including what is to be nailed down theoretically, why the Ising Edwards-Anderson model is so successful at modeling spin-glass dynamics, and experiments yet to be undertaken.

Abstract:We derive the zero-temperature phase diagram of spin glass models with a generic fraction of ferromagnetic interactions on the Bethe lattice. We use the cavity method at the level of one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) and we find three phases: A replica-symmetric (RS) ferromagnetic one, a magnetized spin glass one (the so-called mixed phase), and an unmagnetized spin glass one. We are able to give analytic expressions for the critical point where the RS phase becomes unstable with respect to 1RSB solutions: we also clarify the mechanism inducing such a phase transition. Finally we compare our analytical results with the outcomes of a numerical algorithm especially designed for finding ground states in an efficient way, stressing weak points in the use of such numerical tools for discovering RSB effects. Some of the analytical results are given for generic connectivity.

Abstract:For over half a century, statistical mechanics of spin glasses played as a paradigm to model and interpret disparate phenomena, ranging from quantitative biology to computer science. However, despite the extensive body of research in this area, there is still a notable lack of studies addressing the replacement of Ising spins with Boolean spins: as the latter play as bits in Machine Learning, this gap to fill is now mandatory. Purpose of this paper is to address this study by focusing on the mean field assumption, providing a comprehensive description of the results pertaining to these networks, referred to as the Boolean SK model due to their close relationship with the SK one. We provide a comprehensive framework for this model by employing Guerra interpolation: the thermodynamic limit, the replica symmetric and the broken replica free energy expressions are derived. Further, we inspect the onset of the replica symmetry breaking -- i.e., the de Almeida-Thouless line -- and derive Ghirlanda-Guerra fluctuations. All theoretical findings are corroborated by numerical inspections and both highlight crucial differences in the network's behavior if compared with the Ising SK model: as the temperature is lowered, no phase transitions are evidenced and the model continuously moves from a random (ergodic) behavior to a disordered (glassy) phase.
