Abstract:Abstract This article reviews the 40+ year old spin-glass field and one of its earliest model interpretations as a spin density wave. Our description is from an experimental phenomenological point of view with emphasis on new spin glass materials and their relation to topical problems and strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. We first simply define a spin glass (SG), give its basic ingredients and explain how the spin glasses enter into the statistical mechanics of classical phase transitions. We then consider the four basic experimental properties to solidly characterize canonical spin glass behavior and introduce the early theories and models. Here the spin density wave (SDW) concept is used to explain the difference between a short-range SDW, i.e. a SG and, in contrast, a long-range SDW, i.e. a conventional magnetic phase transition. We continue with the present state of SG, its massive computer simulations and recent proposals of chiral glasses and quantum SG. We then collect and mention the various SG ‘spin-off’s'. A major section uncovers the fashionable unconventional materials that display SG-like freezing and glassy ground states, such as (high temperature) superconductors, heavy fermions, intermetallics and Heuslers, pyrochlor and spinels, oxides and chalogenides and exotics, e.g. quasicrystals. Some conclusions and future directions complete the review.

Abstract:Within the wide class of disordered materials, spin glasses occupy a special place because of their conceptually simple definition of randomly interacting spins. Their modelling has triggered spectacular developments of out-of-equilibrium statistical physics, as well analytically as numerically, opening the way to a new vision of glasses in general. “Real” spin glasses are disordered magnetic materials which can be very diverse from the chemist’s point of view, but all share a number of common properties, laying down the definition of generic spin glass behavior. This paper aims at giving to nonspecialist readers an idea of what spin glasses are from an experimentalist’s point of view, describing as simply as possible their main features as they can be observed in the laboratory, referring to numerous detailed publications for more substantial discussions and for all theoretical developments, which are hardly sketched here. We strived to provide the readers who are interested in other glassy materials with some clues about the potential of spin glasses for improving their understanding of disordered matter. At least, arousing their curiosity for this fascinating subject will be considered a success.

Abstract:We review the main methods used to study spin glasses. In the first part, we focus on methods for fully connected models and systems defined on a tree, such as the replica method, the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer formalism, the cavity method, and the dynamical mean-field theory. In the second part, we deal with the description of low-dimensional systems, mostly in three spatial dimensions, which are mostly studied through numerical simulations. We conclude by mentioning some of the main open problems in the field.

Abstract:Glass transition, in which viscosity of liquids increases dramatically upon decrease of temperature without any major change in structural properties, remains one of the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics despite tremendous research efforts in past decades. On the other hand, disordered freezing of spins in magnetic materials with decreasing temperature, the so-called “spin glass transition,” is understood relatively better. A previously found similarity between some spin glass models and the structural glasses inspired development of theories of structural glasses based on the scenario of spin glass transition. This scenario, although it looks very appealing, is still far from being well established. One of the main differences between standard spin systems and molecular systems is the absence of quenched disorder and the presence of translational invariance: it often is assumed that this difference is not relevant, but this conjecture still needs to be established. The quantities, which are well-defined and characterized for spin models, are not easily calculable for molecular glasses because of the lack of quenched disorder that breaks the translational invariance in the system. Thus the characterization of the similarity between spin and the structural glass transition remains an elusive subject. In this study, we introduced a model structural glass with built-in quenched disorder that alleviates this main difference between the spin and molecular glasses, thereby helping us compare these two systems: the possibility of producing a good thermalization at rather low temperatures is one of the advantages of this model.

Abstract:Understanding mechanical relaxation, such as primary (α) and secondary (β) relaxation, is key to unravel the intertwined relation between the atomic dynamics and non-equilibrium thermodynamics in metallic glasses. At a fundamental level, relaxation, plastic deformation, glass transition, and crystallization of metallic glasses are intimately linked to each other, which can be related to atomic packing, inter-atomic diffusion, and cooperative atom movement. Conceptually, β relaxation is usually associated with structural heterogeneities intrinsic to metallic glasses. However, the details of such structural heterogeneities, being masked by the meta-stable disordered long-range structure, are yet to be understood. In this paper, we briefly review the recent experimental and simulation results that were attempted to elucidate structural heterogeneities in metallic glasses within the framework of β relaxation. In particular, we will discuss the correlation among β relaxation, structural heterogeneity, and mechanical properties of metallic glasses.

Abstract:The study of spin-glass dynamics, long considered the paradigmatic complex system, has reached important milestones. The availability of high-quality single crystals has allowed the experimental measurement of spin-glass coherence lengths of almost macroscopic dimensions, while the advent of special-purpose massive computers enables dynamical simulations that approach experimental time and length scales. This review provides an account of the quantitative convergence of these two avenues of research, with precise experimental measurements of the expected scaling laws and numerical reproduction of classic experimental results, such as memory and rejuvenation. The article opens with a brief review of the defining spin-glass properties, randomness and frustration, and their experimental consequences. These apparently simple characteristics are shown to generate rich and complex physics. Models are introduced that enable quantitative descriptions. After a summary of the main numerical results in equilibrium, paying particular attention to the concept of temperature chaos, this review examines off-equilibrium dynamics in the absence of a magnetic field and shows how it can be related to equilibrium structures through the fluctuation-dissipation relations. The nonlinear response at a given temperature is then developed, including experiments and scaling in the vicinity of the transition temperature $T_\mathrm{g}$. The consequences of temperature change -- including temperature chaos, rejuvenation, and memory -- are reviewed. The interpretation of these phenomena requires identifying several length scales relevant to dynamics, which, in turn, generate new insights. Finally, issues for future investigations are introduced, including what is to be nailed down theoretically, why the Ising Edwards-Anderson model is so successful at modeling spin-glass dynamics, and experiments yet to be undertaken.

Abstract:Aging phenomena have been studied in very different materials like polymers, supercooled liquids or disordered orientational crystals. We recall here the main features of aging in spin glasses, and use this example of magnetic systems as a guideline for the description of the others. A particular attention is put on the sensitivity of aging to the cooling rate and to temperature variations. This allows us to point out differences between temperature specific processes, yielding ``rejuvenation and memory effects'' as known in spin glasses, and domain growth processes, giving cumulative contributions at different temperatures. The relevance of wall depinning processes to rejuvenation and memory effects is discussed at the light of recent results on disordered ferromagnets.

Abstract:Ferroic glass, a concept coined recently, refers to a generic class of frozen disordered ferroic (=ferroelastic, ferroelectric, ferromagnetic) materials with short-range ferroic order; the short-range ferroic order manifests itself as nano-sized ferroic domains which engender from a ferroic glass transition. Ferroic glasses include strain glass in ferroelastic/martensitic systems, relaxor in ferroelectric systems, and cluster spin glass in magnetic systems. They contrast with “ferroic crystals” (i.e., ferroelastics/martensite, ferroelectrics, and ferromagnets), which are characterized by long-range ferroic order or large ferroic domains (mostly micrometer-size) formed by a thermodynamic ferroic transition. The unique short-range order nature of ferroic glasses endows them with technologically important properties not possessed by the corresponding ferroic crystals, such as shape memory and superelasticity in non-martensitic alloys, zero linear thermal expansion (linear Invar effect) and temperature-independent elastic modulus (Elinvar effect), temperature insensitive quasi-linear superelasticity, large dielectric permittivity and electrostrain over wide temperature range, highly sensitive magnetostriction. Ferroic glasses are also found to be the key to understanding a number of longstanding puzzles in ferroic crystals, such as the origin of isothermal martensitic transformation. In this article we overview the state-of-the-arts of ferroic glass research, and present their classification, physical origin, key signatures, novel properties and potential applications in a way understandable to non-specialists. Emphasis is put on the recently-discovered strain glass and physical parallelism among three types of ferroic glasses.
Spin-exchange interaction between transition metals and metalloids in soft-ferromagnetic metallic glasses

Abstract:High-performance magnetic materials have immense industrial and scientific importance in wide-ranging electronic, electromechanical, and medical device technologies. Metallic glasses with a fully amorphous structure are particularly suited for advanced soft-magnetic applications. However, fundamental scientific understanding is lacking for the spin-exchange interaction between metal and metalloid atoms, which typically constitute a metallic glass. Using an integrated experimental and molecular dynamics approach, we demonstrate the mechanism of electron interaction between transition metals and metalloids. Spin-exchange interactions were investigated for a Fe-Co metallic glass system of composition [(Co1-x Fe x )0.75B0.2Si0.05]96Cr4. The saturation magnetization increased with higher Fe concentration, but the trend significantly deviated from simple rule of mixtures. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulation was used to identify the ferromagnetic/anti-ferromagnetic interaction between the transition metals and metalloids. The overlapping band-structure and density of states represent 'Stoner type' magnetization for the amorphous alloys in contrast to 'Heisenberg type' in crystalline iron. The enhancement of magnetization by increasing iron was attributed to the interaction between Fe 3d and B 2p bands, which was further validated by valence-band study.

Abstract:The description of thermodynamic phase transitions in terms of percolation transitions of suitably defined clusters has a long tradition and boasts a number of important successes, the most prominent ones being in ferromagnetic lattice models. Spin glasses and other frustrated systems are not among them as the clusters of aligned spins usually considered in this context start to percolate in the disordered phase and hence fail to indicate the onset of ordering. In this mini-review we provide an overview of the state of the art in this field, including recent advances, and outline the main open questions in the area.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the superspin glass behavior of a concentrated assembly of interacting maghemite nanoparticles and compare it to that of canonical atomic spin glass systems. ac versus temperature and frequency measurements show evidence of a superspin glass transition taking place at low temperature. In order to fully characterize the superspin glass phase, the aging behavior of both the thermo-remanent magnetization (TRM) and ac susceptibility has been investigated. It is shown that the scaling laws obeyed by superspin glasses and atomic spin glasses are essentially the same, after subtraction of a superparamagnetic contribution from the superspin glass response functions. Finally, we discuss a possible origin of this superparamagnetic contribution in terms of dilute spin glass models.

Abstract:The last two decades have witnessed an ever increasing interest in multiferroics, i.e. materials with more than one primary order parameter simultaneously (ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity and ferrotoroidicity). In particular the formation of multiple ferroic glasses (magnetic, polar and strain glass) have become the focus of intensive research. In this special issue we have collected a series of articles from world-class experts dealing with different aspects of ferroic glasses (see also the Preface on pp. 1965–1966). The cover illustration schematically displays the complex phase diagram of a martensitically transforming alloy which shows the appearance of a strain glass phase in the ‘premartensitic or tweed region’ above the martensite transformation temperature as has been observed for Ni–Ti– (Fe), Ni–Co–Mn–Ga, relaxor ferroelectrics (PLZT) and other ferroelectrics (BNT-xBT) where the non-ergodic behavior has been evidenced by zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) measurements (for the corresponding ‘material specific effective field’). This behavior is indicated in the figure by the solid blue line (FC) and the dashed line (ZFC); Tg denotes the strain-glass freezing temperature and Ms the martensite start temperature. For the magnetic intermetallic Heusler alloys we may in addition observe cluster-spin glass behavior.
Local vs. Global Variables for Spin Glasses

Abstract:We discuss a framework for understanding why spin glasses differ so remarkably from homogeneous systems like ferromagnets, in the context of the sharply divergent low temperature behavior of short- and infinite-range versions of the same model. Our analysis is grounded in understanding the distinction between two broad classes of thermodynamic variables -- those that describe the global features of a macroscopic system, and those that describe, or are sensitive to, its local features. In homogeneous systems both variables generally behave similarly, but this is not at all so in spin glasses. In much of the literature these two different classes of variables were commingled and confused. By analyzing their quite different behaviors in finite- and infinite-range spin glass models, we see the fundamental reason why the two systems possess very different types of low-temperature phases. In so doing, we also reconcile apparent discrepancies between the infinite-volume limit and the behavior of large, finite volumes, and provide tools for understanding inhomogeneous systems in a wide array of contexts. We further propose a set of `global variables' that are definable and sensible for both short-range and infinite-range spin glasses, and allow a meaningful basis for comparison of their low-temperature properties.

Abstract:Spin glasses are a highly complex magnetic state of matter, intricately linked to spin frustration and structural disorder. They exhibit no long-range order and exude aging phenomena, distinguishing them from quantum spin liquids. We report a new type of spin glass state, the spin-Q glass, observable in bulk-like crystalline metallic neodymium thick films. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy combined with ab initio calculations and atomistic spin-dynamics simulations, we visualize the variations in atomic-scale non-collinear order and its response to magnetic field and temperature. We quantify the aging phenomena relating the glassiness to crystalline symmetry and the energy landscape. This result not only resolves the long-standing debate of the magnetism of neodymium, but also suggests that glassiness may arise in other magnetic solids lacking extrinsic disorder.

Abstract:Publisher This chapter discusses field of ferroelectricity. It deals with selected salient properties and associated physics. The chapter reviews the phenomenological, soft mode, and first-principles theories of ferroelectrics. There are similarities between spin glasses and dielectric dipolar glasses. The dipolar interaction in both a normal, or ordinary, polarizable medium leads to the formation of a dipolar glass at low temperatures, and in a highly polarizable medium that leads to either long-range ferroelectric order or to a glass-like relaxor state. The properties of relaxor ferroelectrics and the contrast between properties and normal ferroelectrics have also been discussed in the chapter. Discoveries coupled with the scientific challenges of the many facets of ferroelectric phenomena and the technological importance of the field ensure health and vitality of research in ferroelectricity.

Abstract:We present a series of temperature and field-dependent magnetization studies of large single-crystal spin glass samples, focusing on both field-cooled (FC) and zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization studies, as well as ac susceptibility measurements. Using the above experimental techniques we aim to understand the nature of spin glass transition in presence of a field, a key factor in understanding the properties of these systems. Building on previous studies that have explored magnetic signatures indicative of spin glass transitions, our research employs a systematic approach to refine the identification of this transition temperature. Through static and dynamic measurements, we aim to shed light on the open issues regarding the key markers of spin glass transitions, enhancing our understanding of these complex systems.
