Abstract:We investigate the Lévy glass, a mean-field spin glass model with power-law distributed couplings characterized by a divergent second moment. By combining extensively many small couplings with a spare random backbone of strong bonds the model is intermediate between the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and the Viana-Bray model. A truncated version where couplings smaller than some threshold $\eps$ are neglected can be studied within the cavity method developed for spin glasses on locally tree-like random graphs. By performing the limit $\eps\to 0$ in a well-defined way we calculate the thermodynamic functions within replica symmetry and determine the de Almeida-Thouless line in the presence of an external magnetic field. Contrary to previous findings we show that there is no replica-symmetric spin glass phase. Moreover we determine the leading corrections to the ground-state energy within one-step replica symmetry breaking. The effects due to the breaking of replica symmetry appear to be small in accordance with the intuitive picture that a few strong bonds per spin reduce the degree of frustration in the system.

Abstract:We study a fully connected spin-glass model in which the coupling strengths are drawn from a Lévy distribution. In this model each spin can be seen as interacting through a finite number of strong bonds and an infinite number of weak bonds, due to the large tail behavior of the coupling distribution. We solve the model through the replica and the cavity method. The hybrid behavior of Lévy spin glasses becomes transparent in our solution: the local field contains a part propagating along a backbone of strong bonds and a Gaussian noise term due to weak bonds. Our method allows us to determine the complete replica symmetric phase diagram, the replica symmetry breaking line and the entropy. The results are compared with ones from simulations and previous calculations using a Gaussian ansatz for the distribution of fields.

Abstract:We determine the phase transition of the Levy spin glass. A regularized model where the coupling constants smaller than some cutoff $\epsilon$ are neglected can be studied by the cavity method for diluted spin glasses. We show how to handle the $\epsilon\to 0$ limit and determine the de Almeida-Thouless transition temperature in presence of an external field. Contrary to previous findings, in zero external field we do not find any stable replica-symmetric spin glass phase: the spin glass phase is always a replica-symmetry-broken phase.

Abstract:We study the Lévy spin glass model, a fully connected model on $N$ vertices with heavy-tailed interactions governed by a power law distribution of order $0<\alpha<2.$ Our investigation is divided into three cases $0<\alpha<1$, $\alpha=1$, and $1<\alpha<2.$ When $1<\alpha<2,$ we identify a high temperature regime, in which the limit and fluctuation of the free energy are explicitly obtained and the site and bond overlaps are shown to exhibit concentration, interestingly, while the former is concentrated around zero, the latter obeys a positivity behavior. At any temperature, we further establish the existence of the limiting free energy and derive a variational formula analogous to Panchenko's framework in the setting of the Poissonian Viana-Bray model. For $\alpha=1$, the free energy scales super-linearly and converges to a constant proportional to $\beta$ in probability at any temperature. In the case of $0<\alpha<1$, the scaling for the free energy is again super-linear, however, it converges weakly to the sum of a Poisson Point Process at any temperature. Additionally, we show that the Gibbs measure puts most of its mass on the configurations that align with signs of the polynomially many heaviest edge weights.

Abstract:We extend two rigorous results of Aizenman, Lebowitz, and Ruelle in their pioneering paper of 1987 on the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model without external magnetic field to the quantum case with a "transverse field" of strength $b$. More precisely, if the Gaussian disorder is weak in the sense that its standard deviation $v>0$ is smaller than the temperature $1/\beta$, then the (random) free energy almost surely equals the annealed free energy in the macroscopic limit and there is no spin-glass phase for any $b/v\geq0$. The macroscopic annealed free energy (times $\beta$) turns out to be non-trivial and given, for any $\beta v>0$, by the global minimum of a certain functional of square-integrable functions on the unit square according to a Varadhan large-deviation principle. For $\beta v<1$ we determine this minimum up to the order $(\beta v)^4$ with the Taylor coefficients explicitly given as functions of $\beta b$ and with a remainder not exceeding $(\beta v)^6/16$. As a by-product we prove that the so-called static approximation to the minimization problem yields the wrong $\beta b$-dependence even to lowest order. Our main tool for dealing with the non-commutativity of the spin-operator components is a probabilistic representation of the Boltzmann-Gibbs operator by a Feynman-Kac (path-integral) formula based on an independent collection of Poisson processes in the positive half-line with common rate $\beta b$. Its essence dates back to Kac in 1956, but the formula was published only in 1989 by Gaveau and Schulman.

Abstract:We consider the probability distribution of large deviations in the spin-glass free energy for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field model, i.e. the exponentially small probability of finding a system with intensive free energy smaller than the most likely one. This result is obtained by computing $\Phi(n,T)=T \bar{Z^n}/ n$, i.e. the average value of the partition function to the power $n$ as a function of $n$. We study in full details the phase diagram of $\Phi(n,T)$ in the $(n,T)$ plane computing in particular the stability of the replica-symmetric solution. At low temperatures we compute $\Phi(n,T)$ in series of $n$ and $\tau=T_c-T$ at high orders using the standard hierarchical ansatz and confirm earlier findings on the $O(n^5)$ scaling. We prove that the $O(n^5)$ scaling is valid at all orders and obtain an exact expression for the coefficient in term of the function $q(x)$. Resumming the series we obtain the large deviations probability at all temperatures. At zero temperature the analytical prediction displays a remarkable quantitative agreement with the numerical data. A similar computation for the simpler spherical model is also performed and the connection between large and small deviations is discussed.

Exact Solution for the Transverse Field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Spin Glass Model with Continuous-Time Quantum Monte Carlo Method

Abstract:We construct the first complete exact numerical solution of a mean field quantum spin glass model, the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, by implementing a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method in the presence of full replica symmetry breaking. We extract the full numerically exact phase diagram, displaying a glassy phase with continuous replica symmetry breaking at small transverse fields and low temperatures. A paramagnetic phase emerges once thermal and quantum fluctuations melt the spin glass. We characterize both phases by extracting the order parameter, as well as the static and dynamical local spin susceptibilities. The static susceptibility shows a plateau in the glassy phase, but remains smooth across the phase boundary, while the shape of dynamical susceptibility varies upon crossing the glass transition by reducing quantum fluctuations. We qualitatively compare these results to a.c. susceptibility measurements on dipole-coupled Ising magnets in a transverse magnetic field. Our work provides a general framework for the exact numerical solution of mean field quantum glass models, constituting an important step towards understanding glassiness in realistic systems.

Abstract:We analyze the thermodynamic behavior of general n ‐component mean‐field spin glass models in order to identify the origin of the hierarchical structure of the order parameters from the replica‐symmetry breaking solution. We derive a configurationally dependent free energy with local magnetizations and averaged local susceptibilities as order parameters. Using an example of the replicated Ising spin glass we demonstrate that the hierarchy of order parameters in mean‐field models results from the structure of inter‐replica susceptibilities. These susceptibilities serve for lifting the degeneracy due to the existence of many metastable states and for recovering the thermodynamic homogeneity of the free energy. Abstract:We derive the zero-temperature phase diagram of spin glass models with a generic fraction of ferromagnetic interactions on the Bethe lattice. We use the cavity method at the level of one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) and we find three phases: A replica-symmetric (RS) ferromagnetic one, a magnetized spin glass one (the so-called mixed phase), and an unmagnetized spin glass one. We are able to give analytic expressions for the critical point where the RS phase becomes unstable with respect to 1RSB solutions: we also clarify the mechanism inducing such a phase transition. Finally we compare our analytical results with the outcomes of a numerical algorithm especially designed for finding ground states in an efficient way, stressing weak points in the use of such numerical tools for discovering RSB effects. Some of the analytical results are given for generic connectivity.

Abstract:In the present paper we analyze the critical properties of a quantum spherical spin glass model with short range, random interactions. Since the model allows for rigorous detailed calculations, we can show how the effective partition function calculated with help of the replica method for the spin glass fluctuating fields separates into a mean field contribution for the replica diagonal fields and a strictly short range partition function for the replica off-diagonal fields. The mean field part coincides with previous results. The short range part describes a phase transition in a Q^3-field theory, where the fluctuating fields depend on a space variable and two independent time <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://variables.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> we analyze using the renormalization group with dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction of dimensional poles. By generalizing standard field theory methods to our particular situation, we can identify the critical dimensionality as d_c = 5 at very low temperatures due to the dimensionality shift D_c = d_c + 1. we then perform a \epsilon' expansion to order one loop to calculate the critical exponents by solving the renormalization group equations.

Abstract:Spin glasses are a longstanding model for the sluggish dynamics that appear at the glass transition. However, spin glasses differ from structural glasses in a crucial feature: they enjoy a time reversal symmetry. This symmetry can be broken by applying an external magnetic field, but embarrassingly little is known about the critical behavior of a spin glass in a field. In this context, the space dimension is crucial. Simulations are easier to interpret in a large number of dimensions, but one must work below the upper critical dimension (i.e., in d < 6) in order for results to have relevance for experiments. Here we show conclusive evidence for the presence of a phase transition in a four-dimensional spin glass in a field. Two ingredients were crucial for this achievement: massive numerical simulations were carried out on the Janus special-purpose computer, and a new and powerful finite-size scaling method.
Slow Nonthermalizing Dynamics in a Quantum Spin Glass

Abstract:Spin glasses and many-body localization (MBL) are prime examples of ergodicity breaking, yet their physical origin is quite different: the former phase arises due to rugged classical energy landscape, while the latter is a quantum-interference effect. Here we study quantum dynamics of an isolated 1d spin-glass under application of a transverse field. At high energy densities, the system is ergodic, relaxing via resonance avalanche mechanism, that is also responsible for the destruction of MBL in non-glassy systems with power-law interactions. At low energy densities, the interaction-induced fields obtain a power-law soft gap, making the resonance avalanche mechanism inefficient. This leads to the persistence of the spin-glass order, as demonstrated by resonance analysis and by numerical studies. A small fraction of resonant spins forms a thermalizing system with long-range entanglement, making this regime distinct from the conventional MBL. The model considered can be realized in systems of trapped ions, opening the door to investigating slow quantum dynamics induced by glassiness.

Abstract:We derive the thermodynamic limit of the empirical correlation and response functions in the Langevin dynamics for spherical mixed $p$-spin disordered mean-field models, starting uniformly within one of the spherical bands on which the Gibbs measure concentrates at low temperature for the pure $p$-spin models and mixed perturbations of them. We further relate the large time asymptotics of the resulting coupled non-linear integro-differential equations, to the geometric structure of the Gibbs measures (at low temperature), and derive their FDT solution (at high temperature).

Abstract:A model of spinless interacting electrons in presence of randomness is examined using an extended dynamical mean-field formulation. When the interaction strength is large as compared to the Fermi energy, a low temperature glassy phase is identified, which in our formulation corresponds to a replica-symmetry breaking instability. The glassy phase is characterized by a pseudo-gap in the single particle density of states, reminiscent of the Coulomb gap of Efros and Shklovskii. Due to ergodicity breaking, the ``zero-field cooled'' compressibility of this electron glass vanishes at T=0, consistent with absence of screening. When the Fermi energy exceeds a critical value, the glassy phase is suppressed, and normal metallic behavior is recovered.

Abstract:We describe the interplay of quantum and thermal fluctuations in the infinite-range Heisenberg spin glass. This model is generalized to SU(N) symmetry, and we describe the phase diagram as a function of the spin S and the temperature T. The model is solved in the large N limit and certain universal critical properties are shown to hold to all orders in 1/N. For large S, the ground state is a spin glass, but quantum effects are crucial in determining the low T thermodynamics: we find a specific heat linear in T and a local spectral density of spin excitations linear in frequency for a spin glass state which is marginally stable to fluctuations in the replicon modes. For small S, the spin-glass order is fragile, and a spin-liquid state dominates the properties over a significant range of temperatures and frequencies. We argue that the latter state may be relevant in understanding the properties of strongly-disordered transition metal and rare earth compounds.

Abstract:Spin glass models with quadratic-type Hamiltonians are disordered statistical physics systems with competing ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic spin interactions. The corresponding Gibbs measures belong to the exponential family parametrized by (inverse) temperature $\beta>0$ and external field $h\in\mathbb{R}$. Given a sample from these Gibbs measures, a statistically fundamental question is to infer the temperature and external field parameters. In 2007, Chatterjee (Ann. Statist. 35 (2007), no.5, 1931-1946) first proved that in the absence of external field $h=0$, the maximum pseudolikelihood estimator for $\beta$ is $\sqrt{N}$-consistent under some mild assumptions on the disorder matrices. It was left open whether the same method can be used to estimate the temperature and external field simultaneously. In this paper, under some easily verifiable conditions, we prove that the bivariate maximum pseudolikelihood estimator is indeed jointly $\sqrt{N}$-consistent for the temperature and external field parameters. The examples cover the classical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and its diluted variants.

Abstract:We review the main methods used to study spin glasses. In the first part, we focus on methods for fully connected models and systems defined on a tree, such as the replica method, the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer formalism, the cavity method, and the dynamical mean-field theory. In the second part, we deal with the description of low-dimensional systems, mostly in three spatial dimensions, which are mostly studied through numerical simulations. We conclude by mentioning some of the main open problems in the field.

Abstract:The paper addresses the optimal design of the last branch of the pharmaceutical supply chain, i.e., the Hospital Drug Distribution Chain (HDDC), starting from suppliers till the patients of a department. Considering a distributed healthcare system composed of different stages connected by medicine and information links labeled with suitable performance indices, a procedure employing digraph modeling and mixed integer linear programming is presented to select the (sub)optimal HDDC configuration. The optimization model is applied under structural constraints to a case study describing an Italian healthcare regional distribution chain. The problem solution provides different HDDC structures allowing the improvement of the healthcare supply chain flexibility and performance.

Abstract:We construct a mean-field theory for the lattice model of a structural glass and solve it using the replica method and one-step replica symmetry breaking ansatz; this theory becomes exact in the limit of infinite dimensions. Analyzing the stability of this solution we conclude that the metastable states remain uncorrelated in a finite temperature range below the transition, but become correlated at a certain low temperature; below this temperature metastable states bifurcate and the one step replica symmetry breaking solution fails. We find dynamic and thermodynamic transition temperatures as functions of the density, and construct a full thermodynamic description of a typical physical process in which the system is trapped in one metastable state when cooled below the vitrification temperature. We find that for such physical process the entropy and pressure at the glass transition are continuous across the transition, while their temperature derivatives have jumps.

Abstract:We study the chaotic behavior of the Gibbs state of spin-glasses under the application of an external magnetic field, in the crossover region where the field intensity scales proportional to $1/\sqrt{N}$, being $N$ the system size. We show that Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) theory provides universal predictions for chaotic behavior: they depend only on the zero-field overlap probability function $P(q)$ and are independent of other features of the system. Using solely $P(q)$ as input we can analytically predict quantitatively the statistics of the states in a small field. In the infinite volume limit, each spin-glass sample is characterized by an infinite number of states that have a tree-like structure. We generate the corresponding probability distribution through efficient sampling using a representation based on the Bolthausen-Sznitman coalescent. In this way, we can compute quantitatively properties in the presence of a magnetic field in the crossover region, the overlap probability distribution in the presence of a small field and the degree of decorrelation as the field is increased. To test our computations, we have simulated the Bethe lattice spin glass and the 4D Edwards-Anderson model, finding in both cases excellent agreement with the universal predictions.
