Abstract:We examine the effects on baryogenesis of spontaneous CPT violation in a string-based scenario. Under suitable circumstances, certain CPT-violating terms can produce a large baryon asymmetry at the grand-unified scale that reduces to the observed value via sphaleron or other dilution mechanisms.

Abstract:CP violation in the K system is pedagogically reviewed. We discuss its manifestations in the neutral K meson systems, in rare K meson decays and in decays of charged K mesons. Results from classical experiments, and perspectives for upcoming experiments are included. We also briefly discuss the possibility of CPT tests.

Abstract:In the context of string field theory, the possibility exists for the spontaneous violation of Lorentz invariance and CPT. In this talk, we review its status and some experimental constraints. We discuss the possibility that stringy CPT violation could give rise to a mechanism in which baryogenesis occurs in the early Universe in thermal equilibrium and show that this can produce, under suitable circumstances, a baryon asymmetry equal to the observed value.

Abstract:We consider neutral pseudoscalar mesons in an entangled or Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state with C=-1. Due to quantum entanglement and antisymmetry of this state, the rates of the joint decays of the meson pair display various interesting features, as is well known. As functions of CP and CPT violating parameters, here we obtain some exact results about the joint decay rates and their asymmetries for a given time difference defined for joint decays to flavor eigenstates, as well as those for joint decays to CP eigenstates. The entanglement allows a meaningful and useful definition of the transition amplitude from a CP eigenstate of a meson. These results yield useful information and criteria on CP and CPT violations.

Abstract:We propose a new mechanism called "real CP violation" to originate spontaneous CP violation. Starting with a CP conserving theory with scalar fields in the adjoint representation of a global or local non-abelian symmetry, we show that even though the VEV's of such scalars are real they give rise to a spontaneous violation of CP. We provide an illustrative example of how this new mechanism of CP violation can give rise to physically significant phases which produce a complex CKM mixing matrix. This mechanism may prove useful in string models with moduli in the adjoint representation as well as in tackling the strong CP problem.

Abstract:We reconsider the origin of CP violation in fundamental theory. Existing string models of spontaneous CP violation make ambiguous predictions, due to the arbitrariness of CP transformation and the apparent noninvariance of the results under duality. We find a modularCP invariance condition, applicable to any predictive model of spontaneous CP violation, which circumvents these problems; it strongly constrains CP violation by heterotic string moduli. The dilaton is also evaluated as a source of CP violation, but is likely experimentally excluded. We consider the prospects for explaining CP violation in strongly coupled strings and brane worlds.

CP Violation in $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$ Decays: New Opportunities in the High-Precision Era

Abstract:Experimental data on rare $B$-meson decays indicate deviations from Standard Model predictions. In studies of these decays, possible new sources of CP violation are often neglected. We discuss CP violation in the rare $B$-meson decays $B\to K\ell^+\ell^- (\ell = \mu,e)$ and point to two phenomena that arise when new sources of CP violation are included. First, the Wilson coefficients $C_{9\ell}$ and $C_{10\ell}$ become complex, and we show how we can extract their values from measurements of direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries. Second, new sources of CP violation can generate nontrivial lepton flavour universality violation. Such a violation is usually measured through ratios like $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, but we show that measuring only these ratios leaves a large parameter space unexplored. These results bring exciting opportunities to reveal New Physics effects in the high-precision era.

Abstract:The observed CP violation in neutral kaons experiments is explained as an interplay between two oscillations in the earth's Schwarzschild geometry: (i) mixing associated with second order weak coupling and (ii) quark's zitterbewegung. This violation is in fact a CPT violation with T conservation rather than a T violation with CPT conservation. The Hermitian evolution of a stable kaons system leads to the identification of this CPT violation. Then, the finite lifetime of the short-lived kaon rotates the violation parameter such that it appears as a T violation.

Abstract:The necessary complex structures needed for CP violation are not easy to generate and, indeed, CP can be a symmetry in higher dimensional theories. In 4-dimensions CP violation argues for the existence of a scalar sector and, in its simplest manifestation, leads to the CKM model. Further CP violating phases, from an extended scalar sector, are constrained by the requirement of having no FCNC. Although new CP violating phases are expected in SUSY extensions of the SM, the good agreement of data with the CKM model only provides bounds on these phases. Baryogenesis via leptogenesis requires the presence of CP violating phases in the neutrino sector. However, the CP phases likely to be eventually meausured experimentally are not necessarily directly connected to the ones which drive the leptogenesis.

Abstract:The quest for new sources of the simultaneous violation of $C$ and $CP$ symmetry was popular in the 1960s and has since been mostly neglected for more than half a century. In this work we revisit fundamental quark-level operators that break $C$ and $CP$ up to and including mass dimension 8 for flavor-conserving transitions, relying on the complete operator sets of the so-called Standard Model effective field theory and the low-energy effective field theory. With the formalism of chiral perturbation theory, we match these quark operators to light-meson physics, derive $C$- and $CP$-odd Lagrangians for several processes in the $\eta$, $\eta'$, and pion sectors, and furthermore, as a proof of principle, give estimates for the respective observables in explicit dependence of the underlying high-energy scale for new physics.

Abstract:Since its discovery in the 1960s, the violation of CP symmetry has intrigued scientists and stimulated the advancement of knowledge in particle physics. Numerous experiments were designed and built to study it in increasingly deeper detail. Nowadays, the phenomenon is well framed within the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Nevertheless, new results are being produced by modern experiments at colliders that challenge the current understanding of the model. In this article, the current status of CP violation studies and the role of CP violation in the search for effects beyond the Standard Model are described together with the prospects for ongoing and future experiments.

Abstract:The strong CP violation problem has a long history emanating from its discovery 60 years ago in the decay of neutral kaons and subsequent experimental and theoretical studies over several decades. We review herein experimental data that observe indirect CP violation of the order of $\sim10^{-3}$, as well as the discovery of direct CP violation of the order of $\sim10^{-6}$. Despite improved experimental methods over the past half a century, the original CP violation numbers have remained the same. Verification of the CP violation in the decay of charged kaons was also observed. Data reflecting CP violation in the decays of $B$ and $D$ mesons have become very important and are also discussed in this review. The question of CP violation only with the participation of $s\bar{s}$, $c\bar{c}$, and $b\bar{b}$ quarks in the framework of the Standard Model or beyond it and its small magnitude remains open.

Abstract:Entangled pseudoscalar neutral meson pairs have been used in studying CP violation and searching CPT violation, but almost all the previous works concern $C=-1$ entangled state. Here we consider $C=+1$ entangled state of pseudoscalar neutral mesons, which is quite different from $C=-1$ entangled state and provides complementary information on symmetry violating parameters. After developing a general formalism, we consider three kinds of decay processes, namely, semileptonic-semileptonic, hadronic-hadronic and semileptonic-hadronic processes. For each kind of processes, we calculate the integrated rates of joint decays with a fixed time interval, as well as asymmetries defined for these joint rates of different channels. In turn, these asymmetries can be used to determine the four real numbers of the two indirect symmetry violating parameters, based on a general relation between the symmetry violating parameters and the decay asymmetries presented here. Various discussions are made on indirect and direct violations and the violation of $\Delta {\cal F} =\Delta Q$ rule, with some results presented as theorems.
Zitterbewegung CP violation in a Schwarzschild spacetime

Abstract:Neutral kaons oscillations in a Schwarzschild spacetime are analyzed. The interplay between two oscillations: (i) mixing associated with second order weak coupling and (ii) strange quark's zitterbewegung, introduces a coupling responsible for the observed CP violation. This curvature induced violation is a CPT violation with T conservation rather than a T violation with CPT conservation. The non-dissipative Hermitian evolution of the kaons system leads to the identification of this CPT violation. Then, the finite lifetime of the short-lived kaons induces a dissipative rotation of the imaginary violation parameter such that it becomes real and appears as a T violation. The consequences of this elucidation of the origin of neutral kaons CP violation are then discussed and some open perspectives are identified.

Abstract:Neutrino masses provide evidence of lepton flavour violation, but no violation in the interactions among the charged leptons has been observed yet. Many models of Physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) predict Charged Lepton Flavour Violation (CLFV) in a wide spectrum of processes with rates in reach of upcoming experiments. The experimental searches that provide the current best limits on the CLFV searches are reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the muon-based experiments that give the most stringent constraints on BSM parameter space. The next generation of muon-based experiments (MEG-II, Mu2e, COMET, Mu3e) aim to reach improvements by many orders of magnitude w.r.t. the current best limits, thanks to several technological advancements. We review popular heavy BSM theories, and we present the calculations of the predicted CLFV branching ratios, focusing on the more sensitive $\mu\to e$ sector.
