Abstract:Since its discovery in the 1960s, the violation of CP symmetry has intrigued scientists and stimulated the advancement of knowledge in particle physics. Numerous experiments were designed and built to study it in increasingly deeper detail. Nowadays, the phenomenon is well framed within the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Nevertheless, new results are being produced by modern experiments at colliders that challenge the current understanding of the model. In this article, the current status of CP violation studies and the role of CP violation in the search for effects beyond the Standard Model are described together with the prospects for ongoing and future experiments.

CP Violation in $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$ Decays: New Opportunities in the High-Precision Era

Abstract:Experimental data on rare $B$-meson decays indicate deviations from Standard Model predictions. In studies of these decays, possible new sources of CP violation are often neglected. We discuss CP violation in the rare $B$-meson decays $B\to K\ell^+\ell^- (\ell = \mu,e)$ and point to two phenomena that arise when new sources of CP violation are included. First, the Wilson coefficients $C_{9\ell}$ and $C_{10\ell}$ become complex, and we show how we can extract their values from measurements of direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries. Second, new sources of CP violation can generate nontrivial lepton flavour universality violation. Such a violation is usually measured through ratios like $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, but we show that measuring only these ratios leaves a large parameter space unexplored. These results bring exciting opportunities to reveal New Physics effects in the high-precision era.

Abstract:A detailed, model-independent study of CP violation at present and future electron-positron colliders is reported. Firstly, we investigate CP violation effects in $W$ boson and $t$ quark pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and in two-photon fusion at a next $e^+e^-$ linear collider, where Compton-backscattered laser light off the electrons or positrons are employed as a powerful polarized photon source. Secondly, noting that there do not exist any direct measurements for the tau-lepton electric dipole moment (EDM), we address the importance of performing its direct measurements at $e^+e^-$ collisions off the Z-boson pole at TRISTAN, LEPII and CLEOII. We present a rough comparison of the potential of these experiments in the $\tau$ EDM measurements. Finally, we report on our recent works for probing CP violation in the semileptonic decays of the tau lepton, which involve two different intermediate resonances with large ratios of widths to masses, and which can be most efficiently identified at the planned $B$ and proposed $\tau$-charm factories. All the CP-violation phenomena in the processes under consideration, if discovered, imply new CP-violation mechanisms completely different from the Standard Model CP violation mechanism through the complex phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.

Abstract:The CKM matrix is the only source of CP violation in the Standard Model.Heavy-flavour decays provide an ideal laboratory to test the CKM mechanism. Some recent highlights in CP violation in heavy-flavour decays from the LHCb and Belle II experiments are presented, including updated measurements of the CKM angles $\beta$, $\gamma$ and $\phi_s$, and new results in CP violation in charm decays.

Abstract:The narrative of these lectures contains three main threads: (i) CP violation despite having so far been observed only in the decays of neutral kaons has been recognized as a phenomenon of truly fundamental importance. The KM ansatz constitutes the minimal implementation of CP violation: without requiring unknown degrees of freedom it can reproduce the known CP phenomenology in a nontrivial way. (ii) The physics of beauty hadrons -- in particular their weak decays -- opens a novel window onto fundamental dynamics: they usher in a new quark family (presumably the last one); they allow us to determine fundamental quantities of the Standard Model like the $b$ quark mass and the CKM parameters $V(cb)$, $V(ub)$, $V(ts)$ and $V(td)$; they exhibit speedy or even rapid $B^0 - \bar B^0$J oscillations. (iii) Heavy Quark Expansions allow us to treat $B$ decays with an accuracy that would not have been thought possible a mere decade ago. These three threads are joined together in the following manner: (a) Huge CP asymmetries are {\em pre}dicted in $B$ decays, which represents a decisive test of the KM paradigm for CP violation. (b) Some of these predictions are made with high {\em parametric} reliability, which (c) can be translated into {\em numerical} precision through the judicious employment of novel theoretical technologies. (d) Beauty decays thus provide us with a rich and promising field to search for New Physics and even study some of its salient features. At the end of it there might quite possibly be a New Paradigm for High Energy Physics. There will be some other threads woven into this tapistry: electric dipole moments, and CP violation in other strange and in charm decays.

Abstract:We propose a new mechanism called "real CP violation" to originate spontaneous CP violation. Starting with a CP conserving theory with scalar fields in the adjoint representation of a global or local non-abelian symmetry, we show that even though the VEV's of such scalars are real they give rise to a spontaneous violation of CP. We provide an illustrative example of how this new mechanism of CP violation can give rise to physically significant phases which produce a complex CKM mixing matrix. This mechanism may prove useful in string models with moduli in the adjoint representation as well as in tackling the strong CP problem.

Abstract:This is a quick review of CP non-conservation in $B$ physics. Several methods are described for testing the Kobayashi-Maskawa single phase origin of CP violation in B decays, pointing out some limitations due to hadronic uncertainties. Abstract:We review the status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and the CP-violating phases in the CKM-unitarity triangle. The emphasis in these lecture notes is on $B$-meson physics, though we also review the current status and issues in the light quark sector of this matrix. Selected applications of theoretical methods in QCD used in the interpretation of data are given and some of the issues restricting theoretical precision on the CKM matrix elements discussed. The overall consistency of the CKM theory with the available data in flavour physics is impressive and we quantify this consistency. Current data also show some anomalies which, however, are not yet statistically significant. They are discussed briefly. Some benchmark measurements that remain to be done in experiments at the $B$-factories and hadron colliders are listed. Together with the already achieved results, they will provide unprecedented tests of the CKM theory and by the same token may lead to the discovery of new physics.

Abstract:The strong CP violation problem has a long history emanating from its discovery 60 years ago in the decay of neutral kaons and subsequent experimental and theoretical studies over several decades. We review herein experimental data that observe indirect CP violation of the order of $\sim10^{-3}$, as well as the discovery of direct CP violation of the order of $\sim10^{-6}$. Despite improved experimental methods over the past half a century, the original CP violation numbers have remained the same. Verification of the CP violation in the decay of charged kaons was also observed. Data reflecting CP violation in the decays of $B$ and $D$ mesons have become very important and are also discussed in this review. The question of CP violation only with the participation of $s\bar{s}$, $c\bar{c}$, and $b\bar{b}$ quarks in the framework of the Standard Model or beyond it and its small magnitude remains open.

Study of CP Violation in charm decays

Abstract:The violation of the Charge-Parity (CP) symmetry is a phenomenon described by the Standard Model (SM), however, its predictions for this violation are not enough to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the visible universe. Experimentally, CP violation in hadronic decays had already been observed in various circumstances before 2019, when the LHCb experiment at CERN first published results reporting CPV in D-meson decays [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1903.08726v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1903.08726v2">arXiv:1903.08726v2</a>] ($D^0 \to K^- K^+$ and $D^0 \to \pi^- \pi^+$). In this work, a study of CP violation is carried out analysing the phenomenology of charm decays. The study of such topic is guided by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix and the process of flavour changing decays caused by the weak interaction (focusing on charm decays). The symmetries attributed to physical conservation laws were recognized, allowing for the possibilities of CP violation predicted by the SM to be examined more closely. Such theoretical studies are then compared to the results obtained by the LHCb Collaboration. Furthermore, a comparison between CPV in charm decays and in neutrino oscillations is made, analysing the CP violating phase in both the CKM and the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrices.

Abstract:After briefly explaining the special role played by violations of CP and T invariance and their connection with the baryon number of the Universe, I sketch the history of CP violation studies since its totally unexpected discovery in 1964. For about 30 years CP violation could be described by a single number; this has changed dramatically in the years around the turn of the millenium: (i) The existence of {\em direct} CP violation was unequivocally established in the decays of long lived kaons. (ii) For the first time CP violation was observed in a system other than that of neutral kaons, namely in $B\to \psi K_S$. The findings are in impressive agreement with the prediction of the CKM ansatz, which thus has been promoted to the status of a tested theory. These new insights were made possible by close feedback between theory and experiment as well as advances in detector design and a novel machine concept, namely that of an asymmetric collider. We also have direct {\em experimental} evidence that the observed CP violation in $K_L$ and B decays is matched by a violation of microscopic time reversal violation, as required by CPT symmetry. More recently CP violation has been observed also in $B\to \pi^+\pi^-$ and $B\to K^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}$. A few comments are added on subtle aspects of direct CP violation. While we know that the CKM dynamics are irrelevant for generating the baryon number of the Universe -- i.e. hitherto unknown forces have to be driving it -- we have also learnt that such `New Physics' is likely to contain CP violation of sufficient strength.

Abstract:The Standard Model contains a natural source for CP asymmetries in weak decays, which is described by the KM mechanism. Beyond $\epsilon _K$ it generates only elusive manifestations of CP violation in {\em light-}quark systems. On the other hand it naturally leads to large asymmetries in certain non-leptonic beauty decays. In particular when $B^0-\bar B^0$ oscillations are involved, theoretical uncertainties in the hadronic matrix elements either drop out or can be controlled, and one predicts asymmetries well in excess of 10\% with high parametric reliability. It is briefly described how the KM triangle can be determined experimentally and then subjected to sensitive consistency tests. Any failure would constitute indirect, but unequivocal evidence for the intervention of New Physics; some examples are sketched. Any outcome of a comprehensive program of CP studies in $B$ decays -- short of technical failure -- will provide us with fundamental and unique insights into nature's design.

Abstract:The standard model (SM) has several issues related to the $CP$ violation which could give clues to search physics beyond the SM. They are a $CP$ phase in the CKM matrix, the strong $CP$ problem, $CP$ phases in the PMNS matrix and $CP$ asymmetry in lepton number violating processes related to baryon number asymmetry. We consider a model which could give a unified explanation for them in a framework of spontaneous $CP$ violation. It is an extension of the SM with vector-like fermions and singlet scalars. In this model, they are explained by a common complex phase caused in the spontaneous $CP$ violation. We present concrete examples for them and also discuss some relevant phenomenology.

Kaon Theory: 50 Years Later

Abstract:We summarize the status of the Kaon Theory 50 years after the seminal paper of Kobayashi and Maskawa who pointed out that six quarks are necessary to have CP violation in the Standard Model (SM) and presented a parametrization of a $3\times 3$ unitary matrix that after the discovery of the charm quark in 1974 and the $b$ quark in 1977 dominated the field of flavour changing processes. One of the main goals of flavour physics since then was the determination of the four parameters of this matrix, which we will choose here to be $|V_{us}|$, $|V_{cb}|$ and the two angles of the unitarity triangle, $\beta$ and $\gamma$ with $|V_{us}|$ introduced by Cabibbo in 1963. I will summarize recent strategy for determination of these parameters without new physics (NP) infection. It is based on the conjecture of the absence of relevant NP contributions to $\Delta F=2$ processes that indeed can be demonstrated by a negative rapid test: the $|V_{cb}|-\gamma$ plot. This in turn allows to obtain SM predictions for rare $K$ and $B$ decays that are most precise to date. We present strategies for the explanation of the anticipated anomaly in the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and the observed anomalies in $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transitions that are consistent with our $\Delta F=2$ conjecture. In particular, the absence of NP in the parameter $\varepsilon_K$, still allows for significant NP effects in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and in rare Kaon decays, moreover in a correlated manner. Similar the absence of NP in $\Delta M_s$ combined with anomalies in $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transitions hints for the presence of right-handed quark currents. We also discuss how the nature of neutrinos, Dirac vs. Majorana one, can be probed in $K\to\pi\nu\bar\nu$ and $B\to K(K^*)\nu\bar\nu$ decays. The present status of the $\Delta I=1/2$ rule and of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ is summarized.

Abstract:the KM expectations of large CP asymmetries in $B$ decays are reviewed. I describe some observable signatures for the intervention of New Physics and list benchmarks defining the `ultimate' measurements in beauty physics. I also stress the need for dedicated searches for CP asymmetries in $D$ decays; attaining a sensitivity level of $10^{-3}$ could well reveal New Physics and thus lead to a new paradigm.

On the Cp-Violating Phase Delta(Cp) in Fermion Mixing Matrices

Abstract:The recent established large theta(13) in neutrino mixing provides an optimistic possibility for the investigation of the CP violation, therefore it is necessary to study the CP-violating phase delta(CP) in detail. Based on the maximal CP violation hypothesis in the original Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) scheme of neutrino mixing matrix, i.e., delta(KM) = 90 degrees, we calculate delta(CK) for both quarks and leptons in, the Chau-Keung (CK) scheme of the standard parametrization and find that delta(quark)(CK) = (68.62(-0.81)(+0.89))degrees and delta(lepton)(CK) = (85.39(-1.82)(+4.76))degrees, provided with three mixing angles to be given. We also examine the sensitivity of vertical bar V-i(j)vertical bar and vertical bar U-ij vertical bar to delta(CK) and delta(KM). As a convention-independent investigation, we discuss the Phi matrix, which has elements correspond to angles of the unitarity triangles. We demonstrate the Phi matrices for both quark and lepton sectors and discuss the implications as well as the variations of the Phi matrix elements with delta(CP).

Abstract:We consider a model with soft CP violation which accommodate the CP violation in the neutral kaons even if we assume that the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix is real and the sources of CP violation are three complex vacuum expectation values and a trilinear coupling in the scalar potential. We show that for some reasonable values of the masses and other parameters the model allows to explain all the observed CP violation processes in the $K^0$-$\bar{K}^0$ system.

Abstract:We discuss the discovery potential for New Physics of various measurements of CP violation. If nature is supersymmetric, then the flavor problem is even more mysterious than in the standard model. We show how we can learn about the mechanism that solves the supersymmetric flavor problem from measurements of mixing and CP violation in $K$, $D$ and $B$ decays.
