Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a THz frequency domain attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy system using photomixing coherent detection. In our work, the terahertz signal is generated through the optical beat of two DFB lasers, and mixed with the same beat note using a time delay. Since one of the DFB lasers works in frequency sweep mode, we obtain the THz spectra in the range of 0.2-1.2THz with a dynamic range of over 60dB and a frequent resolution of 100MHz. In addition, we propose to insert an ATR prism in the spatial optical path to enable direct detection of polar liquids and solids, which have strong absorption of the terahertz waves. We demonstrate the measurement of the dielectric constant of distilled water with the proposed technique, the results are consistent with the calculated results from the Liebe model.

Abstract:Recently, the classical Z-scan technique is considered feasible for the nonlinear measurement of liquid water in the low-frequency terahertz (THz) band. However, this scheme ignores the nonlinear spectral variation of broadband THz pulses, and its investigation of liquid water in a higher THz band (>1 THz) remains challenging until now. Here, we use Z-scan technology to directly measure the nonlinear absorption coefficient and nonlinear refractive index of liquid water excited at a higher THz range of 0.1–3 THz. Combined with THz time-domain spectroscopy technology, the spectral transmission characteristics caused by nonlinear effects in the Z-scan process are studied for the first time. The potential influence of the saturation absorption effect and self-phase modulation on the transmitted THz beam in liquid water are analyzed theoretically, and the origin of the nonlinear spectral distortion of the THz pulse is further revealed. This work offers a new perspective for observing the nonlinear transmission of THz pulses in liquid water and provides an experimental basis for more accurate analysis of the nonlinear characteristics of water-based THz devices in the future.

Abstract:Terahertz(THz)technique is a new measurement technique that has emerged in recent years. For the measurement of solid concentration, a radiation attenuation method and a phase delay method were developed, which are based on the Beer-Lambert law. Experimental work was carried out on a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system (THz-TDS). Results obtained verify that the terahertz technique may provide a possible new solution to the problem of solid concentration measurement and the two proposed measurement methods are effective. Experiment results also indicate that the phase delay method is more accurate than the radiation attenuation method and the size of the particles affects the measurement results of both methods.
New terahertz dielectric spectroscopy for the study aqueous solutions

Abstract:We present a development of a high precision, tunable far-infrared (terahertz) frequency-domain dielectric spectrometer for studying the dynamics of biomolecules in aqueous solutions in the gigahertz-to-terahertz frequency. As a first application we report on the measurement of the absorption and refractive index for liquid water in the frequency range from 5 GHz to 1.12 THz (0.17 to 37.36 cm-1 or 0.268 to 60 mm). The system provides a coherent radiation source with a power up to 20 mW in the gigahertz-to-terahertz region. The power signal-to-noise ratio of our instrument reaches 1015 and the system achieves a spectral resolution of less than 100 Hz. The temperature of samples can be controlled precisely with an error bars of 0.02 oC from above 0 oC to 90 oC. Given these attributes, our spectrometer provides unique capabilities for the accurate measurement of even very strongly absorbing materials such as aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Terahertz technique is a new measurement technique which has emerged in recent years. In this paper, the possibility of the application of terahertz technique to the measurement of gas-solid two-phase flow has been discussed. The research works are carried out on a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system and focus on the solids volume fraction measurement of gas-solid two-phase flow with high concentration of particles. Measurement models based on transmission attenuation and transmission time delay are studied and compared. Research works verify that terahertz technique may provide a new solution to the problem of high solids volume fraction measurement of gas-solid two-phase flow. Experimental results also indicate that the transmission time delay model is more appropriate than the transmission attenuation model in the measurement of high solids volume fraction.

Abstract:Tracking the excitation of water molecules in the homogeneous liquid is challenging due to the ultrafast dissipation of rotational excitation energy through the hydrogen-bonded network. Here we demonstrate strong transient anisotropy of liquid water through librational excitation using single-color pump-probe experiments at 12.3 THz. We deduce a third order response of chi^3 exceeding previously reported values in the optical range by three orders of magnitude. Using a theory that replaces the nonlinear response with a material response property amenable to molecular dynamics simulation, we show that the rotationally damped motion of water molecules in the librational band is resonantly driven at this frequency, which could explain the enhancement of the anisotropy in the liquid by the external Terahertz field. By addition of salt (MgSO4), the hydration water is instead dominated by the local electric field of the ions, resulting in reduction of water molecules that can be dynamically perturbed by THz pulses.

Abstract:BackgroundPlant water resource management is one of the main future challenges to fight recent climatic changes. The knowledge of the plant water content could be indispensable for water saving strategies. Terahertz spectroscopic techniques are particularly promising as a non-invasive tool for measuring leaf water content, thanks to the high predominance of the water contribution to the total leaf absorption. Terahertz quantum cascade lasers (THz QCL) are one of the most successful sources of THz radiation.ResultsHere we present a new method which improves the precision of THz techniques by combining a transmission measurement performed using a THz QCL source, with simple pictures of leaves taken by an optical camera. As a proof of principle, we performed transmission measurements on six plants of Vitis vinifera L. (cv “Colorino”). We found a linear law which relates the leaf water mass to the product between the leaf optical depth in the THz and the projected area. Results are in optimal agreement with the proposed law, which reproduces the experimental data with 95% accuracy.ConclusionsThis method may overcome the issues related to intra-variety heterogeneities and retrieve the leaf water mass in a fast, simple, and non-invasive way. In the future this technique could highlight different behaviours in preserving the water status during drought stress.

Terahertz Nonlinear Index Extraction via Full-Phase Analysis

Abstract:We experimentally show the spectrally averaged nonlinear refractive index and absorption coefficient for liquid water, water vapor, {\alpha}-pinene, and Si using a full-phase analysis in the terahertz regime through a standard time-domain spectrometer. Our results confirm that the nonlinear index of refraction of the liquid samples in this regime exceeds the near-infrared optical nonlinear index by six orders of magnitude. In the case of liquid water and water vapor at atmospheric pressure, we find a nonlinear index of 7.8x10^-10 cm^2/W and 6x10^-11 cm^2/W respectively, which are both much larger than expected.

Abstract:Terahertz VRT laser spectra of four (H2O)2 intermolecular vibrations consisting of 362 transitions have been measured between 87 and 108 cm−1 with ca. 2 MHz precision. The results differ both qualitatively and quantitatively from the predictions of dimer potentials tested. The spectra also reveal an ordering of the intermolecular vibrations which differs dramatically from that predicted by normal mode analysis. Strong coupling is indicated between the low barrier tunneling motions and the intermolecular vibrations as well as among different vibrations. In particular the 102.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 vibration assigned as the acceptor wag (ν8) exhibits two types of perturbations. In one of these a component of Ka=1 coupling with a tunneling component of Ka=0 in the 108 cm−1 acceptor twist (ν11) vibration. There is also an indication that the 103.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 band assigned as the donor in-plane bend (ν6) is coupled to the acceptor wag resulting in a lower of the in-plane bend frequency and a higher acceptor wag frequency. Detailed analysis of the VRT levels confirms the extreme nonrigidity of this complex, indicating that the use of approximate models with reduced dimensionality to calculate its properties are likely to fail.
Water Vapor: An Extraordinary Terahertz Wave Source under Optical Excitation

Abstract:In modern terahertz (THz) sensing and imaging spectroscopy, water is considered a nemesis to be avoided due to strong absorption in the THz frequency range. Here we report the first experimental demonstration and theoretical implications of using femtosecond laser pulses to generate intense broadband THz emission from water vapor. When we focused an intense laser pulse in water vapor contained in a gas cell or injected from a gas jet nozzle, an extraordinarily strong THz field from optically excited water vapor is observed. Water vapor has more than 50% greater THz generation efficiency than dry nitrogen. It had previously been assumed that the nonlinear generation of THz waves in this manner primarily involves a free-electron plasma, but we show that the molecular structure plays an essential role in the process. In particular, we found that THz wave generation from H2O vapor is significantly stronger than that from D2O vapor. Vibronic activities of water cluster ions, occurring naturally in water vapor, may possibly contribute to the observed isotope effect along with rovibrational contributions from the predominant monomers.

Abstract:Detection and imaging using light at terahertz frequencies continues to be a topic of keen interest for numerous applications. Recent investigations have shown that stacks of natural Josephson junctions in cuprate superconductors are suitable emitters of THz radiation; now our attention turns to effective use of such a source. Using two setups, one featuring bolometric detection and the other heterodyne, the authors achieve results respectively comparable to those for time-domain spectroscopy and systems based on quantum cascade lasers. These findings indicate that their setups are in fact suitable for gas sensing in environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) frequency metrology has become a topic of increasing interest due to the potential applications for THz radiation. While a diversity of THz radiation sources has been demonstrated, there are arguably fewer methods that can be used for the detection of THz radiation, and this has limited the ability to perform spectroscopic measurements in the information-rich THz frequency range. A technique that may facilitate the wider application and accessibility of THz spectroscopy is the nonlinear up-conversion of THz fields to the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range, where there is a plethora of well-developed detection techniques. In this work, we demonstrate the measurement of THz frequency, using up-conversion in an organic crystal, in effect, mapping the target THz spectrum to a spectrum in the NIR wavelength range. The demonstrated measurement range covers a band of up to 29.15 THz (3.45 octaves), which complements the capabilities of existing heterodyne techniques. The ability of this technique to detect slight frequency shifts is examined and methods by which this can be further improved are proposed. The techniques presented in this work have the potential to enable frequency metrology of electromagnetic radiation across the optical-to-THz regions.

Abstract:A versatile setup based on a microfluidics platform allows investigation of liquid samples at various temperatures with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The set up is applied to develop a novel method that performs temperature and concentration calibrations of liquid samples at terahertz frequencies. Other than measuring the concentration of pure liquid phase solutions, it enables the studies of local concentration of semi-crystalline systems. An equivalent solute concentration during crystallisation can be calculated from the extracted absorption at low frequencies. The MgSO4-water system is discussed as an example to illustrate the idea of this method.
Terahertz Frequency Comb High-Resolution Heterodyne Spectrometer

Abstract:We demonstrate the advantages of THz frequency combs for high-resolution spectroscopy. This benefits from wide spectral coverage and the exact knowledge of the frequency position of each comb component. Heterodyne detection combined with a fast Fourier spectrometer enables rapid and simultaneous measurement of more than 80 frequency comb modes covering a 7.5 GHz bandwidth. A spectrum is obtained in under 20 minutes yielding a uniform resolution of 70 kHz. This new setup has been validated by recording more than 150 lines of methanol around 723 GHz, and represents a new solution to exploit THz frequency combs for high-resolution spectroscopy.

Dissecting the THz Spectrum of Liquid Water from First Principles Via Correlations in Time and Space.

Abstract:Solvation of molecules in water is at the heart of a myriad of molecular phenomena and of crucial importance to understanding such diverse issues as chemical reactivity or biomolecular function. Complementing well-established approaches, it has been shown that laser spectroscopy in the THz frequency domain offers new insights into hydration from small solutes to proteins. Upon introducing spatially-resolved analyses of the absorption cross section by simulations, the sensitivity of THz spectroscopy is traced back to characteristic distance-dependent modulations of absorption intensities for bulk water. The prominent peak at approximately 200 cm(-1) is dominated by first-shell dynamics, whereas a concerted motion involving the second solvation shell contributes most significantly to the absorption at about 80 cm(-1) approximately 2.4 THz. The latter can be understood in terms of an umbrella-like motion of two hydrogen-bonded tetrahedra along the connecting hydrogen bond axis. Thus, a modification of the hydrogen bond network, e.g., due to the presence of a solute, is expected to affect vibrational motion and THz absorption intensity at least on a length scale that corresponds to two layers of solvating water molecules. This result provides a molecular mechanism explaining the experimentally determined sensitivity of absorption changes in the THz domain in terms of distinct, solute-induced dynamical properties in solvation shells of (bio)molecules--even in the absence of well-defined resonances.
Terahertz imaging super-resolution for documental heritage diagnostics

Abstract:Terahertz imaging provides valuable insights into the composition and structure of objects or materials, with applications spanning security screening, medical imaging, materials science, and cultural heritage preservation. Despite its widespread utility, traditional terahertz imaging is limited in spatial resolution to approximately 1 mm according to Abbe's formula. In this paper, we propose a novel super-resolution method for terahertz time-domain spectroscopy systems. Our approach involves spatial filtering through scattering in the far-field of high spatial frequency components of the imaged sample. This method leverages evanescent wave filtering using a knife edge, akin to a standard structured illumination scheme. We demonstrate improved spatial resolution in slit diffraction, edge imaging, and reflection imaging of structures fabricated on a paper substrate using commonly encountered materials in works of art and documents. Furthermore, we present super-resolved images of an ancient document on parchment, showcasing the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Nonlinear TeraHertz Coherent Excitation of Vibrational Modes of Liquids

Abstract:We report the first coherent excitation of intramolecular vibrational modes via the nonlinear interaction of a TeraHertz (THz) light field with molecular liquids. A terahertz-terahertz-Raman pulse sequence prepares the coherences with a broadband, high-energy, (sub)picosecond terahertz pulse, that are then measured in a terahertz Kerr effect spectrometer via phase-sensitive, heterodyne detection with an optical pulse. The spectrometer reported here has broader terahertz frequency coverage, and an increased sensitivity relative to previously reported terahertz Kerr effect experiments. Vibrational coherences are observed in liquid diiodomethane at 3.66 THz (122 cm$^{-1}$), and in carbon tetrachloride at 6.50 THz (217 cm$^{-1}$), in exact agreement with literature values of those intramolecular modes. This work opens the door to 2D spectroscopies, nonlinear in terahertz field, that can study the dynamics of condensed-phase molecular systems, as well as coherent control at terahertz frequencies.

Abstract:In reflection geometry of terahertz spectroscopy, the biological sample is usually placed on a sample window. This paper presents a novel method for eliminating the effect of the ringing, i.e., the interference between reflections of the reference and the sample, and from the air–window and sample–window interfaces, respectively. In the proposed method, a special thickness of substrate is designed to acquire an accurate reference reflection. The reflections of the samples of deionized water and ethanol were examined, and the calculation of optical properties of the samples by using our proposed method agrees with standard data. The main advantages of this method are simplicity, accuracy, and ease of application for reflection systems with different incident angles.
