Abstract:Tracking the excitation of water molecules in the homogeneous liquid is challenging due to the ultrafast dissipation of rotational excitation energy through the hydrogen-bonded network. Here we demonstrate strong transient anisotropy of liquid water through librational excitation using single-color pump-probe experiments at 12.3 THz. We deduce a third order response of chi^3 exceeding previously reported values in the optical range by three orders of magnitude. Using a theory that replaces the nonlinear response with a material response property amenable to molecular dynamics simulation, we show that the rotationally damped motion of water molecules in the librational band is resonantly driven at this frequency, which could explain the enhancement of the anisotropy in the liquid by the external Terahertz field. By addition of salt (MgSO4), the hydration water is instead dominated by the local electric field of the ions, resulting in reduction of water molecules that can be dynamically perturbed by THz pulses.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a THz frequency domain attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy system using photomixing coherent detection. In our work, the terahertz signal is generated through the optical beat of two DFB lasers, and mixed with the same beat note using a time delay. Since one of the DFB lasers works in frequency sweep mode, we obtain the THz spectra in the range of 0.2-1.2THz with a dynamic range of over 60dB and a frequent resolution of 100MHz. In addition, we propose to insert an ATR prism in the spatial optical path to enable direct detection of polar liquids and solids, which have strong absorption of the terahertz waves. We demonstrate the measurement of the dielectric constant of distilled water with the proposed technique, the results are consistent with the calculated results from the Liebe model.

Abstract:Terahertz VRT laser spectra of four (H2O)2 intermolecular vibrations consisting of 362 transitions have been measured between 87 and 108 cm−1 with ca. 2 MHz precision. The results differ both qualitatively and quantitatively from the predictions of dimer potentials tested. The spectra also reveal an ordering of the intermolecular vibrations which differs dramatically from that predicted by normal mode analysis. Strong coupling is indicated between the low barrier tunneling motions and the intermolecular vibrations as well as among different vibrations. In particular the 102.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 vibration assigned as the acceptor wag (ν8) exhibits two types of perturbations. In one of these a component of Ka=1 coupling with a tunneling component of Ka=0 in the 108 cm−1 acceptor twist (ν11) vibration. There is also an indication that the 103.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 band assigned as the donor in-plane bend (ν6) is coupled to the acceptor wag resulting in a lower of the in-plane bend frequency and a higher acceptor wag frequency. Detailed analysis of the VRT levels confirms the extreme nonrigidity of this complex, indicating that the use of approximate models with reduced dimensionality to calculate its properties are likely to fail.
Nonlinear TeraHertz Coherent Excitation of Vibrational Modes of Liquids

Abstract:We report the first coherent excitation of intramolecular vibrational modes via the nonlinear interaction of a TeraHertz (THz) light field with molecular liquids. A terahertz-terahertz-Raman pulse sequence prepares the coherences with a broadband, high-energy, (sub)picosecond terahertz pulse, that are then measured in a terahertz Kerr effect spectrometer via phase-sensitive, heterodyne detection with an optical pulse. The spectrometer reported here has broader terahertz frequency coverage, and an increased sensitivity relative to previously reported terahertz Kerr effect experiments. Vibrational coherences are observed in liquid diiodomethane at 3.66 THz (122 cm$^{-1}$), and in carbon tetrachloride at 6.50 THz (217 cm$^{-1}$), in exact agreement with literature values of those intramolecular modes. This work opens the door to 2D spectroscopies, nonlinear in terahertz field, that can study the dynamics of condensed-phase molecular systems, as well as coherent control at terahertz frequencies.

Abstract:We experimentally measure the temperature dependence of terahertz generation from a liquid water line excited by sub-picosecond laser pulses. To study the effect of water density change on THz wave emission, the water temperature range is set from 3.5 to 90 °C, with a smaller step between 3.5 and 5.5 °C due to the maximum density of liquid water at 4.0 °C. Moreover, the relationship between water flow rate and temperature is investigated. The result shows the measured change of emitted THz field vs the variation of water temperature.

Abstract:Recently, the classical Z-scan technique is considered feasible for the nonlinear measurement of liquid water in the low-frequency terahertz (THz) band. However, this scheme ignores the nonlinear spectral variation of broadband THz pulses, and its investigation of liquid water in a higher THz band (>1 THz) remains challenging until now. Here, we use Z-scan technology to directly measure the nonlinear absorption coefficient and nonlinear refractive index of liquid water excited at a higher THz range of 0.1–3 THz. Combined with THz time-domain spectroscopy technology, the spectral transmission characteristics caused by nonlinear effects in the Z-scan process are studied for the first time. The potential influence of the saturation absorption effect and self-phase modulation on the transmitted THz beam in liquid water are analyzed theoretically, and the origin of the nonlinear spectral distortion of the THz pulse is further revealed. This work offers a new perspective for observing the nonlinear transmission of THz pulses in liquid water and provides an experimental basis for more accurate analysis of the nonlinear characteristics of water-based THz devices in the future.

Abstract:Laser-induced liquid plasma is expected to be an efficient medium for a new generation of terahertz (THz) devices. However, the mechanism of interaction between liquid plasma and THz waves is currently unclear. Here, we observed two phenomena related to THz wave interaction with water plasma: THz-induced second harmonic (TISH) radiation in water plasma and THz absorption by water plasma. We established an internal relationship between these two macroscopic phenomena by utilizing a photocurrent model and the Drude model. Using liquid water and air as examples, a scheme is proposed to analyze the photonic characteristics of plasma in different physical states. This study offers an experimental basis for predicting the TISH phenomenon across various substances and states and also provides the theoretical support for the practical implementation of liquid-based detection of THz waves.

Abstract:Significance The thermally populated motions of liquids, including hydrogen bonds, low-energy bending vibrations, conformational torsions, and hindered rotations, are resonant in the terahertz region of the spectrum. These motions regulate solvation, macromolecular structure, and vibrational energy flow in liquid-phase chemistry. By exciting terahertz motions nonlinearly with multiple pulses of terahertz light, we can measure their anharmonic coupling and distribution of chemical environments. We can also begin to control their quantum coherence and population, a critical step forward in the control of liquid-phase chemistry with light.

Abstract:Solvation of molecules in water is at the heart of a myriad of molecular phenomena and of crucial importance to understanding such diverse issues as chemical reactivity or biomolecular function. Complementing well-established approaches, it has been shown that laser spectroscopy in the THz frequency domain offers new insights into hydration from small solutes to proteins. Upon introducing spatially-resolved analyses of the absorption cross section by simulations, the sensitivity of THz spectroscopy is traced back to characteristic distance-dependent modulations of absorption intensities for bulk water. The prominent peak at approximately 200 cm(-1) is dominated by first-shell dynamics, whereas a concerted motion involving the second solvation shell contributes most significantly to the absorption at about 80 cm(-1) approximately 2.4 THz. The latter can be understood in terms of an umbrella-like motion of two hydrogen-bonded tetrahedra along the connecting hydrogen bond axis. Thus, a modification of the hydrogen bond network, e.g., due to the presence of a solute, is expected to affect vibrational motion and THz absorption intensity at least on a length scale that corresponds to two layers of solvating water molecules. This result provides a molecular mechanism explaining the experimentally determined sensitivity of absorption changes in the THz domain in terms of distinct, solute-induced dynamical properties in solvation shells of (bio)molecules--even in the absence of well-defined resonances.

Abstract:In modern terahertz (THz) sensing and imaging spectroscopy, water is considered a nemesis to be avoided due to strong absorption in the THz frequency range. Here we report the first experimental demonstration and theoretical implications of using femtosecond laser pulses to generate intense broadband THz emission from water vapor. When we focused an intense laser pulse in water vapor contained in a gas cell or injected from a gas jet nozzle, an extraordinarily strong THz field from optically excited water vapor is observed. Water vapor has more than 50% greater THz generation efficiency than dry nitrogen. It had previously been assumed that the nonlinear generation of THz waves in this manner primarily involves a free-electron plasma, but we show that the molecular structure plays an essential role in the process. In particular, we found that THz wave generation from H2O vapor is significantly stronger than that from D2O vapor. Vibronic activities of water cluster ions, occurring naturally in water vapor, may possibly contribute to the observed isotope effect along with rovibrational contributions from the predominant monomers.

Abstract:Highly intense, sub-picosecond terahertz (THz) pulses can be used to induce ultrafast temperature jumps (T-jumps) in liquid water. A supercritical state of gas-like water with liquid density is established, and the accompanying structural changes are expected to give rise to time-dependent chemical shifts. We investigate the possibility of using extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photoelectron spectroscopy as a probe for ultrafast dynamics induced by sub-picosecond THz pulses of varying intensities and frequencies. To this end, we use ab initio methods to calculate photoionization cross sections and photoelectron energies of (H2O)$_{20}$ clusters embedded in an aqueous environment represented by point charges. The cluster geometries are sampled from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations modeling the THz-water interactions. We find that the peaks in the valence photoelectron spectrum are shifted by up to 0.4 eV after the pump pulse, and that they are broadened with respect to unheated water. The shifts can be connected to structural changes caused by the heating, but due to saturation effects they are not sensitive enough to serve as a thermometer for T-jumped water.

Abstract:Energy dissipation in water is very fast and more efficient than in many other liquids. This behavior is commonly attributed to the intermolecular interactions associated with hydrogen bonding. Here, we investigate the dynamic energy flow in the hydrogen-bond network of liquid water by a pump-probe experiment. We resonantly excite intermolecular degrees of freedom with ultrashort single-cycle terahertz pulses and monitor its Raman response. By using ultrathin sample-cell windows, a background-free bipolar signal whose tail relaxes mono-exponentially is obtained. The relaxation is attributed to the molecular translational motions, using complementary experiments, force-field and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. They reveal an initial coupling of the terahertz electric field to the molecular rotational degrees of freedom whose energy is rapidly transferred, within the excitation pulse duration, to the restricted-translational motion of neighboring molecules. This rapid energy transfer may be rationalized by the strong anharmonicity of the intermolecular interactions.

Abstract:Formation of local molecular structures in liquid water is believed to have marked effect on the bulk properties of water, however, resolving such structural motives in an experiment is challenging. This challenge might be handled if the relevant low-frequency structural motion of the liquid is directly driven with an intense electromagnetic pulse. Here, we resonantly excite diffusive reorientational motions in water with intense terahertz pulses and measure the resulting transient optical birefringence. The observed response is shown to arise from a particular configuration, namely the restricted trans-lational motion of water molecules whose motions are predominantly orthogonal to the dipole moment of the excited neighboring water molecules. Accordingly, we estimate the strength of the anharmonic coupling between the rotational and the restricted translational degrees of freedom of water.

Abstract:Liquid water at ambient temperature displays ultrafast molecular motions and concomitant fluctuations of very strong electric fields originating from the dipolar H2O molecules. We show that such random intermolecular fields induce tunnel ionization of water molecules, which becomes irreversible if an external terahertz (THz) pulse imposes an additional directed electric field on the liquid. Time-resolved nonlinear THz spectroscopy maps charge separation, transport and localization of the released electrons on a few-picosecond time scale. The highly polarizable localized electrons modify the THz absorption spectrum and refractive index of water, a manifestation of a highly nonlinear response. Our results demonstrate how the interplay of local electric field fluctuations and external electric fields allows for steering charge dynamics and dielectric properties in aqueous systems.

Abstract:Both solids and gases have been demonstrated as the materials for terahertz (THz) coherent detection. The gas-based coherent detection methods require a high-energy probe laser beam and the detection bandwidth is limited in the solid-based methods. Whether liquids can be used for THz detection and relax these problems has not yet been reported, which becomes a timely and interesting topic due to the recent observation of efficient THz wave generation in liquids. Here, we propose a THz coherent detection scheme based on liquid water. When a THz pulse and a fundamental laser beam are mixed on a free-flowing water film, a second harmonic (SH) beam is generated as the plasma is formed. Combining this THz-induced SH beam with a control SH beam, we successfully achieve the time-resolved waveform of the THz field with the frequency range of 0.1-18 THz. The required probe laser energy is as low as a few microjoules. The sensitivity of our scheme is 1 order of magnitude higher than that of the air-based method under comparable detection conditions. The scheme is sensitive to the THz polarization and the phase difference between the fundamental and control SH beams, which brings direct routes for optimization and polarization sensitive detection. Energy scaling and polarization properties of the THz-induced beam indicate that its generation can be attributed to a four-wave mixing process. This generation mechanism makes simple relationships among the probe laser, THz-induced SH, and THz field, favorable for robustness and flexibility of the detection device.

Abstract:Terahertz radiation generation from liquid water has long been considered to be impossible due to strong absorption. A few very recent works reported terahertz generation from water, but the mechanism is not clear and the efficiency demands to be enhanced. We show experimentally that strong single-cycle terahertz radiation with field strength of $\rm 0.2~MV cm^{-1}$ is generated from a water line/column of $\sim 200 \mu m$ in diameter irradiated by a mJ femtosecond laser beam. This strength is 100-fold higher than that produced from air. We attribute the mechanism to the laser-ponderomotive-force-induced current with the symmetry broken around the water-column interface. This mechanism can explain our following observations: the radiation can be generated only when the laser propagation axis deviates from the column center; the deviation determines its field strength and polarity; it is always p-polarized no matter whether the laser is p- or s-polarized. This study provides a simple and efficient scheme of table-top terahertz sources based on liquid water.

Abstract:The importance of water as a universal and unique solvent for chemical and biological reactions has continued to stimulate theoretical, computational, and experimental efforts on understanding the structure and dynamics of liquid water. Liquid water has a broad absorption band in the 3μm region due to its fundamental stretching vibrations which are particularly sensitive to its hydrogen binding structure. Graener et al have originated picosecond hole burning experiments on liquid water in this spectral region and revealed the inhomogeneous nature of the hydrogen bonding structures (Ref. 1) Femtosecond coherent experiments would be particularly informative about the vibrational dephasing and other dynamical properties of the system. A 50fs pulse at 3μm is needed in order to coherently excite the entire inhomogeneously broadened band. However, this has been experimentally difficult due to the lack of femtosecond source in this spectral region.
The resonant heating of heavy water solutions under the terahertz pulse irradiation

Abstract:The heating effect of terahertz pulse with various frequencies and intensities on the heavy water solution is investigated using the molecular dynamics simulation. Resonant absorptions are found for both heavy water and light water, but at a different resonant frequency which is about 16THz for heavy water and 21THz for light water. This resonant phenomenon can be explained perfectly by the collective rotational modes that may release water molecules from hydrogen bonding. The findings not only illustrate the heating mechanism of heavy water solution under the terahertz pulse irradiation, but also demonstrate a novel difference between light water and heavy water that could have potential applications.

Phonon-Polaritons in Non-Centrosymmetric Systems: Theory of Terahertz Pump-Optical Probe Spectroscopy

Abstract:Hybrid lattice-light modes, known as phonon-polaritons, represent the backbone of advanced protocols based on THz pumping of infrared modes. Here we provide a theoretical framework able to capture the different roles played by phonon-polaritons in experimental protocols based either on Raman-like pump and probe schemes, typical of four-wave-mixing processes, or on THz pump-visible probe three-wave mixing protocols. By using a many-body description of the nonlinear optical kernel, along with a perturbative solution of nonlinear Maxwell's equations, we highlight the advantages of exploiting broadband THz pumps to enlarge the phase space of the phonon-polariton dispersion accessible in a single experiment. Besides providing a quantitative description of existing and future experiments, our results offer a general framework for the theoretical modeling of the hybridization between light and lattice degrees of freedom in time-resolved experiments.
