Abstract:Gigahertz-to-terahertz spectroscopy of macromolecules in aqueous environments provides an important approach for identifying their global and transient molecular structures, as well as directly assessing hydrogen-bonding. We report dielectric properties of zwitterionic dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles in aqueous solutions over a wide frequency range, from 50 MHz to 1.12 THz. The dielectric relaxation spectra reveal different polarization mechanisms at the molecular level, reflecting the complexity of DPC micelle-water interactions. We have made a deconvolution of the spectra into different components and combined them with the effective-medium approximation to separate delicate processes of micelles in water. Our measurements demonstrate reorientational motion of the DPC surfactant head groups within the micelles, and two levels of hydration water shells, including tightly- and loosely-bound hydration water layers. From the dielectric strength of bulk water in DPC solutions, we found that the number of waters in hydration shells is approximately constant at 950 +/- 45 water molecules per micelle in DPC concentrations up to 400 mM, and it decreases after that. At terahertz frequencies, employing the effective-medium approximation, we estimate that each DPC micelle is surrounded by a tightly-bound layer of 310 +/- 45 water molecules that behave as if they are an integral part of the micelle. Combined with molecular dynamics simulations, we determine that tightly-bound waters are directly hydrogen-bonded to oxygens of DPC, while loosely-bound waters reside within 4 A of micellar atoms. The dielectric response of DPC micelles at terahertz frequencies yields, for the first time, experimental information regarding the largest-scale, lowest frequency collective motions in micelles.

Abstract:Terahertz spectroscopy has unique advantages in the study of biological molecules in aqueous solutions. However, water has a strong absorption capability in the terahertz region. Reducing the amount of liquid could decrease interference with the terahertz wave, which may, however, affect the measurement accuracy. Therefore, it is particularly important to balance the amount and water content of liquid samples. In this work, a terahertz metamaterial sensor based on metallic strips is designed, fabricated, and used to detect reverse micelles. An aqueous confinement environment in reverse micelles can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the terahertz response. Due to "water pool" trapped in reverse micelles, the DOPC (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) solution and DOPC emulsion can successfully be identified in intensity by terahertz spectroscopy. Combined with the metamaterial sensor, an obvious frequency shift of 30 GHz can be achieved to distinguish the DOPC emulsion (5%) from the DOPC solution. This approach may provide a potential way for improving the sensitivity of detecting trace elements in a buffer solution, thus offering a valuable toolkit toward bioanalytical applications.
Interfacial Layers between Ion and Water Detected by Terahertz Spectroscopy

Abstract:Dynamic fluctuations in hydrogen-bond network of water occur from femto- to nano-second timescale and provides insights into structural/dynamical aspects of water at ion-water interfaces. Employing terahertz spectroscopy assisted with molecular dynamics simulations, we study aqueous chloride solutions of five monovalent cations, namely, Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs. We show that ions modify the behavior of surrounding water molecules and form interfacial layers of water around them with physical properties distinct from that of bulk water. Small cations with high charge densities influence the kinetics of water well beyond the first solvation shell. At terahertz frequencies, we observe an emergence of fast relaxation processes of water with their magnitude following the ionic order Cs>Rb>K>Na>Li, revealing an enhanced population density of weakly coordinated water at ion-water interface. The results shed light on the structure breaking tendency of monovalent cations and provide insights into the properties of ionic solutions at the molecular level.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a THz frequency domain attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy system using photomixing coherent detection. In our work, the terahertz signal is generated through the optical beat of two DFB lasers, and mixed with the same beat note using a time delay. Since one of the DFB lasers works in frequency sweep mode, we obtain the THz spectra in the range of 0.2-1.2THz with a dynamic range of over 60dB and a frequent resolution of 100MHz. In addition, we propose to insert an ATR prism in the spatial optical path to enable direct detection of polar liquids and solids, which have strong absorption of the terahertz waves. We demonstrate the measurement of the dielectric constant of distilled water with the proposed technique, the results are consistent with the calculated results from the Liebe model.

Abstract:We introduce wavelet transform into terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, and report the analysis of experimental results of water vapor absorption in terahertz range. The extracted absorption lines are in excellent agreement with those previously reported. Wavelet transform in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy can be considered as a novel method for the analysis of the time-domain properties of absorption spectra of terahertz radiation.

Abstract:Recently, the classical Z-scan technique is considered feasible for the nonlinear measurement of liquid water in the low-frequency terahertz (THz) band. However, this scheme ignores the nonlinear spectral variation of broadband THz pulses, and its investigation of liquid water in a higher THz band (>1 THz) remains challenging until now. Here, we use Z-scan technology to directly measure the nonlinear absorption coefficient and nonlinear refractive index of liquid water excited at a higher THz range of 0.1–3 THz. Combined with THz time-domain spectroscopy technology, the spectral transmission characteristics caused by nonlinear effects in the Z-scan process are studied for the first time. The potential influence of the saturation absorption effect and self-phase modulation on the transmitted THz beam in liquid water are analyzed theoretically, and the origin of the nonlinear spectral distortion of the THz pulse is further revealed. This work offers a new perspective for observing the nonlinear transmission of THz pulses in liquid water and provides an experimental basis for more accurate analysis of the nonlinear characteristics of water-based THz devices in the future.

Suppressed terahertz dynamics of water confined in nanometer gaps

Abstract:Nanoconfined waters have been extensively studied within various systems, demonstrating low permittivity under static conditions; however, their dynamics have been largely unexplored due to the lack of a robust platform, particularly in the terahertz (THz) regime where hydrogen bond dynamics occur. We report the THz complex refractive index of nanoconfined water within metal gaps ranging in width from 2 to 20 nanometers, spanning mostly interfacial waters all the way to quasi-bulk waters. These loop nanogaps, encasing water molecules, sharply enhance light-matter interactions, enabling precise measurements of refractive index, both real and imaginary parts, of nanometer-thick layers of water. Under extreme confinement, the suppressed dynamics of the long-range correlation of hydrogen bond networks corresponding to the THz frequency regime result in a significant reduction in the terahertz permittivity of even 'non-interfacial' water. This platform provides valuable insights into the long-range collective dynamics of water molecules which is crucial to understanding water-mediated processes such as protein folding, lipid rafts, and molecular recognition.

Spectroscopic study on the water in reverse micelles

Abstract:In order to detect the structure and properties of water in reverse micelles, the spectra of NMR and IR of AOT reverse micellar solutions with different water contents were recorded. It is shown that water molecules situated in the first hydrated layer of Na+ ions of AOT reverse micelles are tightly bounded while the hydrogen-bonded association between them is greatly weakened due to the strong interaction of ion-dipoles. As more water is introduced, the bounded degree of water decreases while the hydrogen-bonded association is enhanced. Even in the largest reverse micelles, the mobility of water in reverse micelles is still lower than that in bulk. It is for these peculiar properties of reverse micellar water that reverse micellar solution has come into wide use.
Terahertz-Light Induced Structural Transition and Superpermeation of Confined Monolayer Water

Abstract:The confined monolayer water between atomic-gapped graphene-based membranes has broad and promising applications in seawater desalination and water purification, which benefits from the fast transport of water and subsequent low energy cost. However, it is still unclear whether there are approaches to further improve the transport of water across membranes. Herein, based on molecular dynamics simulations, we propose that a light stimulus with the frequency of 31.5 ± 1.0 THz can nonthermally enhance the permeation of confined monolayer water across a graphene-based membrane by 37-fold, followed by a transition to the super permeation state of confined water. The underlying mechanism is disclosed to involve a THz light-induced structural phase transition of the monolayer water, but not bulk water, from quasi-two-dimensional (2D) ice to 2D liquid at room temperature due to resonance of the electromagnetic wave with the vibration mode of confined water. Regulating Evaporation of a Water Nanofilm by Applying a Terahertz Alternating Electric Field

Abstract:The evaporation of water nanofilms on a solid surface is a widespread and important process in many fields. Herein, we utilize molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate that the evaporation of a water nanofilm is regulated by applying an alternating electric field (AEF). An AEF at a specific frequency can be resonantly absorbed by the water film. Consequently, the AEF with sufficient strength significantly increases the evaporation rate of the water film (R). In contrast, an AEF of a different frequency and polarization direction decreases R sharply, which is closely related to the strengthened hydrogen bond network and the reduced kinetic energy of the outermost water of the water film. When the maximum amplitude of the AEFs is 0.9 V/nm, which is achievable in a laboratory setting, R spans six orders of magnitude. The effects of applying the AEFs are quite distinct from those of changing the temperature. Notably, the polarization direction of the AEF plays an important role in the water evaporation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on regulating the evaporation rate of a water film, showing that it is possible to use AEFs to tune the properties of nanoscaled water, such as the wettability.

Abstract:In reflection geometry of terahertz spectroscopy, the biological sample is usually placed on a sample window. This paper presents a novel method for eliminating the effect of the ringing, i.e., the interference between reflections of the reference and the sample, and from the air–window and sample–window interfaces, respectively. In the proposed method, a special thickness of substrate is designed to acquire an accurate reference reflection. The reflections of the samples of deionized water and ethanol were examined, and the calculation of optical properties of the samples by using our proposed method agrees with standard data. The main advantages of this method are simplicity, accuracy, and ease of application for reflection systems with different incident angles.

Abstract:Laser-induced liquid plasma is expected to be an efficient medium for a new generation of terahertz (THz) devices. However, the mechanism of interaction between liquid plasma and THz waves is currently unclear. Here, we observed two phenomena related to THz wave interaction with water plasma: THz-induced second harmonic (TISH) radiation in water plasma and THz absorption by water plasma. We established an internal relationship between these two macroscopic phenomena by utilizing a photocurrent model and the Drude model. Using liquid water and air as examples, a scheme is proposed to analyze the photonic characteristics of plasma in different physical states. This study offers an experimental basis for predicting the TISH phenomenon across various substances and states and also provides the theoretical support for the practical implementation of liquid-based detection of THz waves.

Abstract:Phase separation of octanol and water is a common liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) phenomenon. This paper investigates the intervention of a non-invasive terahertz (THz) electric field on the phase separation process of octanol and aqueous solutions. Our simulations show that the THz electric field can alter the phase of octanol molecules aggregation to make it more compact and have a smaller solvent accessible surface area (SASA). The intervention of a THz electric field on the phase separation process of octanol aqueous solution is important for applications such as the separation of chemical substances, purification of biomolecules, preparation of nanomaterials, and control of colloidal stability.

Abstract:The structures of interfaces of nano- and microscale objects in aqueous solution are important for a wide variety of physical, chemical and biological processes. Vibrational sum frequency scattering has emerged as a useful and unique probe of the interfacial structure of nano- and microscale objects in water. However, the full surface vibrational stretch mode spectrum has not been measured yet, even though it would be extremely informative to do so. The reason for this is that probing the vibrational modes of interfacial water requires a full understanding of how the linear absorptive properties of the bulk aqueous medium influence the sum frequency scattering process. Here, we have simulated vibrational sum frequency scattering spectra of the interface of nanoscale objects dispersed in water. We analyzed the effect of the infrared pulse absorption on the outcome of surface vibrational sum frequency scattering measurements. We find that both infrared absorption as well as the type of optical detection can drastically modify the measured vibrational interfacial spectrum. The observed changes comprise spectral distortion, frequency shifting of the main vibrational stretch mode and the introducing of a new high frequency peak. This last feature is enhanced by non-resonant interactions.

Abstract:The dynamics and structure of the hydrogen-bond network in confined water are of importance in understanding biological and chemical processes. Recently, terahertz (THz) time domain spectroscopy was widely applied for studying the kinetics of molecules and the hydrogen-bond network in water. However, the characteristics of the THz spectroscopy varying with respect to the confinement and the mechanism underlying the variation are still unclear. Here, on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, the relationship between the anisotropic dielectric relaxation and the structure of the water confined in a carbon nanotube (CNT) was investigated. The results show that there are two preferred hydrogen-bond orientations of the confined water in the nanotube: (1) parallel to the CNT axis and (2) perpendicular to the CNT axis, which are clearly different. Moreover, the response of the orientations to the increment of the CNT diameters is opposite, leading to the opposite variations of the dielectric relaxation times along the two directions. The anisotropy in the relaxation time can be presented by the anisotropic dielectric permittivity which is able to be observed through THz spectroscopy. The anormal behaviors above are attributed to the special structure of the water close to the nanotube wall due to the confinement and hydrophobicity of CNT. These studies contribute an important step in understanding the THz experiments of water in nanoscales, and designing a chamber for specific chemical and biological reactions by controlling the diameters and materials of the nanotube.

Abstract:The heating effect of terahertz pulse with various frequencies and intensities on the heavy water solution is investigated using the molecular dynamics simulation. Resonant absorptions are found for both heavy water and light water, but at a different resonant frequency which is about 16THz for heavy water and 21THz for light water. This resonant phenomenon can be explained perfectly by the collective rotational modes that may release water molecules from hydrogen bonding. The findings not only illustrate the heating mechanism of heavy water solution under the terahertz pulse irradiation, but also demonstrate a novel difference between light water and heavy water that could have potential applications.

Abstract:Liquid water at ambient temperature displays ultrafast molecular motions and concomitant fluctuations of very strong electric fields originating from the dipolar H2O molecules. We show that such random intermolecular fields induce tunnel ionization of water molecules, which becomes irreversible if an external terahertz (THz) pulse imposes an additional directed electric field on the liquid. Time-resolved nonlinear THz spectroscopy maps charge separation, transport and localization of the released electrons on a few-picosecond time scale. The highly polarizable localized electrons modify the THz absorption spectrum and refractive index of water, a manifestation of a highly nonlinear response. Our results demonstrate how the interplay of local electric field fluctuations and external electric fields allows for steering charge dynamics and dielectric properties in aqueous systems.
Effect of terahertz electromagnetic field on single-file water transport through a carbon nanotube

Abstract:With the advancement in terahertz technology, the terahertz electromagnetic field has been proven to be an effective strategy to tune the nanofluidic transport. In this study, we utilize molecular dynamics simulations to systematically analyze the transport of single-file water through a carbon nanotube (CNT) under terahertz electromagnetic fields, focusing on the CNT length, field strength, polarization direction and frequency. Strikingly, with the increase in field strength, the water flow exhibits a transition from normal to super permeation states because of the resonance effect, and the threshold field shifts to low values for long CNTs. The field component parallel to the CNT axis contributes to the resonance effect and increasing water flow, but the vertical component maintains the structure of the single-file water chain and even impedes the water flow. As a result, for a continuous change of field direction, the water flow changes from super permeation to normal states. With the increase in field frequency, the water flow also changes from super permeation to normal or even frozen states, where a higher frequency is required to trigger the super permeation states for lower field strength. Our results provide a comprehensive insight into the effect of terahertz electromagnetic field on the transport of single-file water chains and should have great implications for designing novel nanofluidic devices.
