Abstract:The article aims to explicate the binary created between the two sweeteners, that is, gur (jaggery) and sugar. The focal point of this article is to understand with the analytical framework of politics of knowledge how a ‘traditional’ sweetener, that is, gur, is replaced from our diet by a ‘modern’ sweetener, that is, sugar. This framework replaces the term ‘traditional’ knowledge with ‘already existing knowledge system’ (AEKS, as spelt out by Banerjee [2021, Studies in Indian Politics, vol. 9, pp. 78–90]) and its transformation is examined in five different spaces: epistemology, political economy, historical context, state policy and collective action. In the first section, the epistemic hegemony of sugar is deconstructed through analytical understanding of technological processing; in the second, the changing political economy of sweeteners is explored. The third analyses post-colonial sugar policy showing the continuum from the colonial; and the fourth explores the politics of collective action to challenge and delegitimize the hegemony of sugar.

Abstract:The frontier of colonial Queensland was pushed northward through the second half of the 19th century by proliferating sugar plantations. The cultivation of sugar cane for these plantations rested predominantly on the shoulders of unfree, racialized Pacific Islander workers. This history reveals dialectics of cheap lives and land, as nature was produced for exchange at the commodity frontier, unfolding in crises of disease, death and exhaustion. In exploring the story of this frontier, an opportunity emerges to begin a conversation between a recent return to materialism within Australian historiography and the traditions of eco‐Marxism and Black radicalism. The contention here is that this engagement represents both 'urgent history' and 'truth‐telling', as plantation socioecologies of cheapness continue to (re)produce the crises of the racial Capitalocene.

Abstract:Abstract: In 1854, a whaling vessel brought two bundles of sugarcane from Tahiti to Maui, marking the beginning of the Lahaina cane's history and the socioecological transformation of the Hawaiian Islands and the Asia-Pacific. This essay tells a history of sugar through the transpacific crossings of three nonhuman species: sugarcane, the sugarcane beetle borer, and the tachinid fly. It situates nonhuman actors within the historical context of plantation agriculture, capitalist imperialism, and biological globalization of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Pacific to reconceptualize entomological categories like "pest" and "parasite." Engaging with actor-network theory, animal studies, and island studies, the essay attempts to offer insights into historical agency, human–nonhuman relations, and large-scale ecological change.
Islands of knowledge: science and agriculture in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean

Abstract:This essay explores the participation of Latin America and the Caribbean in the construction and circulation of tropical agricultural science during the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. It uses the term "islands of knowledge" to underscore the idea that each producing region across the global tropics, including Latin America and the Caribbean, was instrumental in the creation, adoption, and application of scientific procedures. At the same time, it emphasizes the value of interchange and interconnection between these regions, as well as the many and heterogeneous local areas, for analyzing what it calls "global archipelago agricultural scientific knowledge." This focus challenges the traditional center/periphery hierarchy and opens it to a wider vision of science and practice in agriculture. This essay shows how writing in related areas of research--specifically, commodity histories, biological exchange studies, and knowledge exchange studies--introduces approaches and case studies that are useful for the history of tropical agricultural science. In particular, this work provides analytical frameworks for developing studies of exchanges across the Global South.

Abstract:Consumers often wish to substitute refined sugar with alternative sweeteners, such as coconut sugar, given growing interest in healthy eating and the public's negative perception of excess sugar intake. Coconut sugar is a healthier, sweetener option than the majority of other sugars that are commercially available. Sap is collected from trees to be transported, stored, and evaporated during processing, which are labor- and resource-intensive operations. Consequently, the cost of production is higher than it is for cane sugar. Given its high nutritional value and low glycemic index, people are willing to pay higher prices for it. However, one barrier is ignorance of its health benefits. This review examines and deals in-depth with the most significant features of coconut sugar chemical analyses to focus on several analytical methodologies given the increasing demand for naturally derived sweeteners in the last 10 years. A deeper understanding of the quality control, safety, health effects, nutritional profile, and sustainability issues corresponding to coconut sugar is necessary to effectively implement them in the food industry.

Abstract:The Anglo-Jewish writer Grace Aguilar (1816–47) took the Spanish Inquisition as a major topic, returning to its settings, events, and themes across three novellas, a novel, and several poems. Despite her assertions of historical accuracy and her knowledge of her family history in Jamaica, none of these Inquisition works describe transatlantic Jewish migration. Instead, her characters perish or else migrate directly to an idealized Britain. This paper establishes a new framework for Aguilar’s writings on Sephardic history by bringing to light the financial benefits accrued by Aguilar’s family from the ownership of enslaved people in Jamaica. It also emphasizes the influence of the messianic writings of her great-grandfather Benjamin Dias Fernandes. I argue that the intensity of Aguilar’s identification with English literary forms and perspectives does not indicate a tendency toward assimilation. Rather, Britain was for her as a site of redemption. Its status as a haven for persecuted Sephardim – as the end point of their exile and wanderings – is not merely a civic, but also an eschatological one.

Abstract:Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of mortality across the Caribbean and similar regions. Structural determinants include a marked increase in the dependency on food imports, and the proliferation of processed foods, including sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). We focused on Jamaica as a case study and the health challenge of SSBs, and situated contemporary actions, experiences and policies within their historical context to investigate underlying drivers of commercial determinants of health and attempts to counter them. We asked: how can a historical perspective of the drivers of high level SSB consumption in Jamaica contribute to an enhanced understanding of the context of public health policies aimed at reducing their intake? Methods: An ethnographic approach with remote data collection included online semi-structured interviews and workshops with 22 local experts and practitioners of health, agriculture and nutrition in Jamaica and attending relevant regional public webinars on SSBs and NCD action in the Caribbean. Our analysis was situated within a review of historical studies of Caribbean food economies with focus on the twentieth century. Jamaican and UK-based researchers collected and ethnographically analysed the data, and discussed findings with the wider transdisciplinary team. Results: We emphasise three key areas in which historical events have shaped contextual factors of SSB consumption. Trade privileged sugar as a cash crop over food production during Jamaica's long colonial history, and trade deregulation since the 1980s through structural adjustment opened markets to transnational companies. These changes increased Jamaican receptiveness to the mass advertisement and marketing of these companies, whilst long-standing power imbalances hampered taxation and regulation in contemporary public health actions. Civil society efforts were important for promoting structural changes to curb overconsumption of SSBs and decentring such entrenched power relations. Conclusion: The contemporary challenge of SSBs in Jamaica is a poignant case study of commercial determinants of health and the important context of global market-driven economies and the involvement of private sector interests in public health policies and governance. Historically contextualising these determinants is paramount to making sense of the sugar ecology in Jamaica today and can help elucidate entrenched power dynamics and their key actors.

Abstract:Sugarcane is one of the most economically important crops with particular cultural and economic significance in the Hawaiian Islands. The historical influence of sugarcane in Hawai‘i tends to overshadow the fact that Native Hawaiians cultivated dozens of unique varieties of sugarcane for almost a millennium before the arrival of Europeans. The objective of this study was to characterize the genetic and phenotypic diversity of sugarcane to reexamine the relationships between traditional Hawaiian sugarcane varieties and heirloom cultivars from elsewhere in the Pacific. To this end, a morphological assessment utilizing 95 phenotypic characteristics of 53 extant cultivars held in ethnobotanical collections was conducted, along with genetic assignment using 6,570 polymorphic SNP markers on 156 diverse varieties. In investigating distinct traditional cultivars of extant sugarcane collections in Hawai ‘i as “Hawaiian,” our findings demonstrated the need for intimate knowledge and relationships with accessions in order to make meaningful interpretations of genetic and phenotypic data. Based on over 15 years of involvement with the heirloom Hawaiian canes and the traditional and contemporary uses, we demonstrated and discussed the unique value of these cultivars, and their potential to contribute to economics, sustainability, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Abstract:Carbohydrate partitioning is the process of carbon assimilation and distribution from source tissues, such as leaves, to sink tissues, such as stems, roots and seeds. Sucrose, the primary carbohydrate transported long distance in many plant species, is loaded into the phloem and unloaded into distal sink tissues. However, many factors, both genetic and environmental, influence sucrose metabolism and transport. Therefore, understanding the function and regulation of sugar transporters and sucrose metabolic enzymes is key to improving agriculture. In this review, we highlight recent findings that (i) address the path of phloem loading of sucrose in rice and maize leaves; (ii) discuss the phloem unloading pathways in stems and roots and the sugar transporters putatively involved; (iii) describe how heat and drought stress impact carbohydrate partitioning and phloem transport; (iv) shed light on how plant pathogens hijack sugar transporters to obtain carbohydrates for pathogen survival, and how the plant employs sugar transporters to defend against pathogens; and (v) discuss novel roles for sugar transporters in plant biology. These exciting discoveries and insights provide valuable knowledge that will ultimately help mitigate the impending societal challenges due to global climate change and a growing population by improving crop yield and enhancing renewable energy production.

Abstract:ENTRIES are invited for the 1949 fourth intermediate prize award of 5,000 dollars offered by the Sugar Research Foundation. The award will be given for discoveries in the chemistry, physiology or technological application of carbohydrates which contribute to an understanding of the functions of sugar (sucrose) or to its practical utilization. The first of these awards (1946) was made to Drs. W. Z. Hassid, M. Doudoroff and H. A. Barker, of the University of California, Berkeley, for research leading to the enzymatic synthesis of sucrose; the second (1947) went to Dr. Carl F. Cori, professor of biochemistry, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, for research on problems of carbohydrate metabolism in the animal body ; the third (1948) to Dr. Leslie F. Wiggins, University of Birmingham, for chemical studies of the sucrose molecule and transformations which may make sucrose a valuable raw material in the chemical industries. Winners of these intermediate annual awards are eligible for the Grand Prize of 25,000 dollars to be given in 1950 for the most important work during the five preceding years. Abstract:Sugars are the building blocks of carbohydrates and a source of energy and calories that helps in proper functioning of the muscles and brain. It plays one of the most essential parts in food ingredients, contributing fibres, vitamins and minerals in our diet. Largely speaking, sugarcane and sugar beets are the commercially viable sources of sugar. However, sugar is a by-product of photosynthesis and, as such, is found in fibres of all plants. Sugar is found inherently in fruits, vegetables, dairy goods and grains. Sugarcane from the East Indies was the first sugar crop to be cultivated, while sugar beets were developed in the nineteenth century in Europe. The change in consumer and lifestyle habits in the last half a century has brought a significant shift in the way we consume and make use of sugar. Other than sugarcane and sugar beet, nowadays there are several other organic and artificial sweetening agents that have been used since centuries. In processed foods, powdered drink mixes, baked goods, dairy products and soft drinks, sugar substitutes are commonly used. In addition, the growth of low-sugar foods among diabetic and diet-conscious people, and the growing demand for dietary liquid foods, is further projected to accelerate the growth of the market for sugar substitutes. People have used sugar, natural syrups like maple syrup and other natural substances like honey to sweeten their products. In the USA, sugar consumption pattern has changed drastically in the last three decades due to the invention of the starch hydrolysis technique. Also, the market is experiencing growth of sugar substitutes due to the booming of food processing industry, growing diabetes incidence and rising obesity among the population. Hence, many of the ingredients used today as fillers, sweetening and bulking agents comprise of sugar alcohols and other organic and synthetic sweet materials apart from usual white sugar.

Abstract:This essay revisits Sylvia Wynter’s 1971 essay “Novel and History, Plot and Plantation” in relation to a quandary: the history of provision grounds not only as a resource but also as an initiation into property relations during and after West Indian slavery. In this light, the plot becomes a space of instruction in how to become a free subject through exchange. The essay draws out the plot’s histories of dispossession, enclosure, and dispute. Ultimately, it offers another term, siphon, as the condition of the overlapping conjunctures of West Indian emancipation and the postcolonial.

Abstract:Amir Hussain's stories challenge dominant narratives and explore postcolonial identity. His recipe for sweet rice offers insights into cultural assimilation and the importance of self-discovery. We applied a postcolonial approach whichseek to develop their literary voices in regions once described in colonialism as “primitive” or “savage”. They explore themes of self-independence and cultural displacement, offering critiques of colonialism and its ongoing effects on individual agency and identity. Objectives of this paper include a systematic analysis of the story to unwrap the elements of identity crisis in Amir Hussain's literary work. Identity in postcolonial concepts is complicated, linked to the “other” and difficult to define. Sweet Rice portrays the struggle and identity crisis faced by immigrants, and the suppression of indigenous culture and knowledge by colonialism. Displacement leads to identity fluidity, nostalgia, and reinvention as a means of reclaiming agency and autonomy. Study methodology includes the thematic analysis of the story with an outlook of postcolonial approach. We concluded that Shireen's "Sweet Rice" story shows the challenges of cultural identity and displacement in a globalized world. The journey this character underscores the intricate nature of upholding customary beliefs and self-sufficiency. It instills confidence and authority within oneself. Honoring cultural heritage while chasing after personal interests can result in a fulfilling existence.

Abstract:This article aims to challenge the traditional narrative about the progression of medical knowledge from Arabic to Latin by including the role of the Byzantine world in that process. It examines critically the steady diffusion of Arabic medical knowledge throughout Byzantium by focusing on the introduction and dissemination of sugar-based potions. By studying for the first time a substantial body of mostly unedited translations of Arabic medical texts into Greek and works by Byzantine medical authors, this article argues that Byzantine literature and culture were more lively than they are given credit for and that-by medieval standards-Byzantine authors were quite open to outside influence. Moreover, it emphasizes that the subsequent use of sugar in Byzantine daily medical practice constituted a significant investment in health, especially bearing in mind the high cost involved in the cultivation, production, and transportation of sugar. Finally, it points to the regular use of sugar in medical practice from the late eleventh/early twelfth century onward, at least, in Constantinople, which suggests constant importing of the commodity, despite the fact that the first source confirming the trading of sugar in the Byzantine capital dates to the first half of the fourteenth century.

Abstract:Taking tuber sciences and their histories as a case study, this essay hinges on materiality, both as a condition shaping thing–human relations and as a vector for producing knowledge and generating theory. It explores how people have made knowledge about some very earthy, solid, rooted, underground things: namely, tuber crops—yams, sweet or white potatoes, manioc, and taro. Unlike the waving seas of wheat and other grand global crops that sustained the rise of our modern world, tubers were almost invisible in history of science and technology until very recently. Anthropologists, however, have been thinking with tubers, recording how humans understand and work with them, and building theories about materiality and society from these observations for over a century—and they continue to be a vibrant source of inspiration to anthropologists of materiality today. The essay discusses the contexts in which different ways of knowing-through-tubers, vernacular and academic, have been formulated and asks what inspiration these tuber tales might offer to historians of science.

Abstract:This paper takes as its starting point memories of an encounter which saw a Jamaican dancehall queen perform on a locally produced television show in Santiago de Cuba at the height of the Special Period economic crisis. I propose that this encounter was a harbinger of subsequent experiences of popular culture consumption in contemporary Cuba, while also drawing from histories of regional connection that placed Santiago de Cuba in a constellation of trans-Caribbean exchanges. The moment shows how, during the Special Period crisis, media producers sought new paths through which to navigate the technological challenges of making television amidst material shortages, and in doing so created new imaginaries of a transnational consumer culture which featured (specific and appropriate) newly built spaces of leisure and distinctive brands of consumption. The television broadcast was a consciously crafted mediation of emerging consumer cultures that at once repudiated and represented the everyday experience of Cuban society as rooted in crisis, scarcity, and socialist taste hierarchies.
