Abstract:ABSTRACT New strategies for sugarcane production have been very important since the incorporation of ethanol in the Brazilian energy mix in the early 1970s. Prior to planting sugarcane, the soil is prepared, and this process can affect root development and, consequently, sugarcane production. This study was conducted in an area of sugarcane crop renewal in the Cerrado biome (Brazilian tropical savanna), with the objective of identifying which tillage system generates the better root development and improved yield in sugarcane. The treatments were: 1) weed desiccation + moldboard plowing (0.4 m) + mild spike tooth harrowing (0.15 m); 2) subsoiler (0.3 m) + mild spike tooth harrowing (0.15 m); 3) weed desiccation + no-tillage (furrow opening and fertilizer); 4) weed desiccation + subsoiler (0.4 m); 5) ratoon destruction + subsoiler (0.4 m); 6) ratoon destruction + spike tooth harrowing (0.2 m) + moldboard plowing (0.4 m) + mild spike tooth harrowing (0.15 m). Characteristics of the sugarcane root system, such as the root length density, average distance between roots, and root soil exploration, after the first harvest (1.5 years) were studied. Root length density was greater for the treatments that included plowing (0.4 m) and harrowing (0.15 m) operations. The average distance between roots was low in the no-tillage system. The highest sugarcane yield in the plant crop was achieved by management practices with more extensive soil profile disturbances, like plowing followed by harrowing.
Native Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Exhibit Biotechnological Potential in Improvement of Soil Biochemical Quality and in Increasing Yield in Sugarcane Cultivars

Abstract:The optimization and sustainability of farming systems are essential. The use of biotechnologies, such as the increase in the density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) propagules, can be an important technique to maximize the effects of fertilizers and benefit the plant and, consequently, increase the biomass and microbial activity in the soil. This study evaluated the effect of inoculation of native AMF on soil biochemical quality and the yield of different sugarcane (Saccharum species hybrids) cultivars. The experiment was conducted in the field following a randomized block experimental design in 6 × 2 factorial arrangements [sugarcane cultivars (CTC 1, CTC 7, CTC 9, CTC 16, SP89-1115, and RB925345) and inoculation of AMF], in two ratoon crops. The native AMF were inoculated through application of inoculum soil in the planting furrow at the time of sowing the crop. At the end of each ratoon crop, the following traits were evaluated: microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, soil respiration, enzyme activities (β-glucosidase, urease, phosphatase, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis), mycorrhizal colonization and sugarcane yield. The increase in biomass and in microbial activities in relation to inoculation with native AMF led to increases in sugarcane yield, but the more prominent were CTC1, CTC7, and CTC9. The increase in the density of the native AMF by means of inoculation with inoculum soil favored soil biochemical quality and increased the yield of the sugarcane cultivars, regardless of the known yield potential of each cultivar, with reduction in production costs.

Abstract:Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is one of the most important crops in the world. Throughout the sugarcane’s growth stages, periods of drought are common, causing detrimental effects on plant growth. Therefore, the search for strategies for minimizing the impact of drought on sugarcane development is of great interest. Plant growth-promoting bacteria hold the potential for improving tolerance to drought in agricultural systems. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate whether inoculation with Bacillus subtilis can reduce the negative effects of drought on the nutritional, physiological, and morphological characteristics of sugarcane plants. For this, sugarcane was cultivated in a greenhouse, under controlled conditions of water and temperature, with the aid of four treatments: without and with inoculation of B. subtilis, in normal conditions of water availability, and in conditions of water restriction (2 × 2 factorial), with four replications. In treatments with inoculation, the pre-emerged seedlings were immersed in a B. subtilis solution and transplanted into experimental pots. Our results showed that inoculation with B. subtilis improved plant nutrition and chlorophyll concentrations. As a result, the gas exchange parameters (especially net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency) were also improved, even under drought conditions. In addition, stress parameters (antioxidant metabolism activity) were reduced in inoculated plants. The sum of these beneficial effects resulted in increased root growth, tillering, stalk weight, and higher sucrose concentration in the stalks.

Abstract:Sugarcane yields are declining under successive planting (monoculture) compared to other planting systems in Florida Histosols. To evaluate soil properties related to the sugarcane yield decline, an on-farm study was conducted on soil chemical, biological, and microbial indicators variation with soil samples collected from successive green cane or burnt cane harvest, flooded fallow, and rice and sweetcorn rotation planting sites. Overall, harvest residue incorporated in the soil in green cane harvest and corn rotation increased organic matter, total carbon and C:N ratios which resulted in higher microbial biomass parameters and total PLFA biomass. However, successive planting with burnt cane harvest reduced total soil carbon and hence microbial biomass. Findings suggested that these parameters should be considered for further research to determine specific causes of sugarcane yield decline in successive planting.

Untrafficked furrowed seedbed sustains soil physical quality in sugarcane mechanized fields

Abstract:Management strategies that reduce machinery traffic such as creating seedbeds could be adopted to preserve soil health and reduce soil physical restriction to sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) growth. Field experiments on clayey and sandy loam soils were conducted along four crop seasons (2013‐2017) to investigate the changes in bulk density, soil penetration resistance, macroporosity and microporosity in the row and inter‐row positions, as well as sugarcane biomass production (root and stalk yield) under different machinery traffic treatments. The experimental areas were conducted in randomized block design with two treatments and four repetitions. The evaluated treatments were: i) regular traffic, in which all operations were performed mechanically using regular machinery traffic; and ii) without traffic, in which all field operations (except those used for sunn hemp management and for opening the sugarcane planting furrow) were performed manually without machinery traffic. No critical values of physical properties in both soil types were identified in plots without machinery traffic, indicating lowest density and soil penetration resistance values, as well as higher macroporosity, where sugarcane seedbed zones had been established. Our findings show that seedbeds resulted in higher root growth and development in the soil profile, mainly in inter‐row position. Overall, sugarcane stalk yield was similar between the treatments in both soil types. This study reinforces the importance of the planting furrow on keeping suitable soil conditions for plant growth and concludes that sugarcane production in untrafficked seedbeds is an effective strategy to sustain soil physical conditions over the crop cycle, without the need of tillage operations during the (re)planting period.This article is protected by copyright. Metagenome-based diversity and functional analysis of culturable microbes in sugarcane

Abstract:Sugarcane, widely acknowledged as the foremost crop for sugar and energy production on a worldwide scale, is confronted with many diseases that pose serious threats to its production. Biological control has become more popular as an approach for preventing and controlling diseases because of its environment-friendly characteristics. However, there is a lack of thorough investigation and use of microbial resources in sugarcane. This study conducted a thorough analysis of culturable microbes and their functional features in different tissues and rhizosphere soil of four diverse sugarcane species using metagenomics techniques. The results revealed significant microbial diversity in sugarcane's tissues and rhizosphere soil, including several important biomarker bacterial taxa identified, which are reported to engage in several processes that support plant growth. The LEfSe studies identified unique microbial communities in different parts of the same sugarcane species, particularly Burkholderia, which exhibited significant variations across the sugarcane species. Microbial analysis of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) indicated that genes related to sucrose metabolism were mostly present in specific bacterial taxa, including Burkholderia, Pseudomonas, Paraburkholderia, and Chryseobacterium. This study improves understanding of the diversities and functions of endophytes and rhizosphere soil microbes in sugarcane. Moreover, the approaches and findings of this study provide valuable insights for microbiome research and the use of comparable technologies in other agricultural fields.

The Agro-Industrial Sugarcane System in Mexico: Current Status, Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract:Sugarcane cultivation in Mexico occurs under a wide range of socioeconomic, environmental and agricultural conditions, with the last three harvests (2010/2011, 2011/2012 and 2012/2013) providing yields ranging from 36-125 t ha-1 (variation > 347%), with an average yield of 70.2 t ha-1, which is below the world average of 80 t ha-1. The total area allocated to sugarcane production in Mexico is close to 800 thousand hectares, and could rise to nearly 5 million hectares given adequate conditions for its cultivation. This activity generates approximately 1 million direct jobs, 2.2 million indirect jobs, and more than 2.5 billion dollars (0.4% of GDP) per year. Climate change and the rapid market penetration of high fructose corn syrup are among the greatest threats to this agribusiness, including severe disintegration of production processes in the field, industry, commerce, and consumption of cane sugar. Technology lags, low investment, high processing costs and shortcomings in production sales are issues the industry must address by leveraging their resources and coordinating processing links to be more efficient and competitive. Political influence has imposed a suboptimal policy framework to achieve the projected potential. To overcome current lags in the field and refineries within the country, significant innovations across the value-chain are underway, including a robust breeding program, digitalization of sugarcane fields and novel investments in research and development. The sugarcane value-chain has great potential for Mexico, and exploiting this potential is possible if technological, organizational and commercial management innovations currently in progress in fields and factories are applied.

Abstract:Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is a special crop plant that underwent anthropogenic evolution from a wild grass species to an important food, fodder, and energy crop. Unlike any other grass species which were selected for their kernels, sugarcane was selected for its high stem sucrose accumulation. Flowering in sugarcane is not favored since flowering diverts the stored sugar resources for the reproductive and developmental energy needs. Cultivars are vegetatively propagated and sugarcane breeding is still essentially focused on conventional methods, since the knowledge of sugarcane genetics has lagged that of other major crops. Cultivar improvement has been extremely challenging due to its polyploidy and aneuploidy nature derived from a few interspecific hybridizations between Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum, revealing the coexistence of two distinct genome organization modes in the modern variety. Alongside implementation of modern agricultural techniques, generation of hybrid clones, transgenics and genome edited events will help to meet the ever-growing bioenergy needs. Additionally, there are two common biotechnological approaches to improve plant stress tolerance, which includes marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genetic transformation. During the past two decades, the use of molecular approaches has contributed greatly to a better understanding of the genetic and biochemical basis of plant stress-tolerance and in some cases, it led to the development of plants with enhanced tolerance to abiotic stress. Hence, this review mainly intends on the events that shaped the sugarcane as what it is now and what challenges ahead and measures taken to further improve its yield, production and maximize utilization to beat the growing demands.
Technical, economic and social dimensions of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) in animal feed: a study with the application of multivariate data analysis

Abstract:The objective of this research was to make a diagnosis of the use of cane in animal feed, to know the technological dimension in which is inserted, and to raise opportunities for acting. A questionnaire collected the information on producers. The database was composed of 76 producers and 18 questions, analyzed by the techniques of factor analysis and cluster analysis. In 40% of the properties the work is familiar, in 40% fixed personnel are hired and in 20% other compositions. The area of the properties was less than 20 hectares in 45% of the responses. In 92% of the properties, the main activity is cattle raising, and in 75% of them sugarcane is used for animal feed. Producers with greater specialization in animal husbandry do the best applicability of sugarcane in animal feed. The most varied systems of animal husbandry use sugarcane, whether or there is no technological intensification. The biggest gap observed was the lack of adequate technological diffusion for the potential use of sugarcane for forage purposes by the producers. In this way, one can say that there is much to do for the efforts and resources employed in scientific research to reach the rural producer.

Abstract:Sugarcane ( Saccharum spp.) is a tropical and sub-tropical, vegetative-propagated crop that contributes to approximately 80% of the sugar and 40% of the world’s biofuel production. Modern sugarcane cultivars are highly polyploid and aneuploid hybrids with extremely large genomes (>10 Gigabases), that have originated from artificial crosses between the two species, Saccharum officinarum and S . spontaneum . The genetic complexity and low fertility of sugarcane under natural growing conditions make traditional breeding improvement extremely laborious, costly and time-consuming. This, together with its vegetative propagation, which allows for stable transfer and multiplication of transgenes, make sugarcane a good candidate for crop improvement through genetic engineering. Genetic transformation has the potential to improve economically important properties in sugarcane as well as diversify sugarcane beyond traditional applications, such as sucrose production. Traits such as herbicide, disease and insect resistance, improved tolerance to cold, salt and drought and accumulation of sugar and biomass have been some of the areas of interest as far as the application of transgenic sugarcane is concerned. Although there have been much interest in developing transgenic sugarcane there are only three officially approved varieties for commercialization, all of them expressing insect-resistance and recently released in Brazil. Since the early 1990’s, different genetic transformation systems have been successfully developed in sugarcane, including electroporation, Agrobacterium tumefaciens and biobalistics. However, genetic transformation of sugarcane is a very laborious process, which relies heavily on intensive and sophisticated tissue culture and plant generation procedures that must be optimized for each new genotype to be transformed. Therefore, it remains a great technical challenge to develop an efficient transformation protocol for any sugarcane variety that has not been previously transformed. Additionally, once a transgenic event is obtained, molecular studies required for a commercial release by regulatory authorities, which include transgene insertion site, number of transgenes and gene expression levels, are all hindered by the genomic complexity and the lack of a complete sequenced reference genome for this crop. The objective of this review is to summarize current techniques and state of the art in sugarcane transformation and provide information on existing and future sugarcane improvement by genetic engineering.

Abstract:Bacterial endophytes constitute a very diverse community and they confer important benefits which help to improve agricultural yield. Some of these benefits remain underexplored or little understood, mainly due to the bottlenecks associated with the plant feature, a low number of endophytic bacterial cells in relation to the plant, and difficulties in accessing these bacteria using cultivation-independent methods. Enriching endophytic bacterial cells from plant tissues, based on a non-biased, cultivation-independent physical enrichment method, may help to circumvent those problems, especially in the case of sugarcane stems, which have a high degree of interfering factors, such as polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, nucleases, and fibers. In the present study, an enrichment approach for endophytic bacterial cells from sugarcane lower stems is described. The results demonstrate that the enriched bacterial cells are suitable for endophytic community characterization. A community analysis revealed the presence of previously well-described but also novel endophytic bacteria in sugarcane tissues which may exert functions such as plant growth promotion and biological control, with a predominance of the Proteobacterial phylum, but also Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes, among others. In addition, by comparing the present and literature data, it was possible to list the most frequently detected bacterial endophyte genera in sugarcane tissues. The presented enrichment approach paves the way for improved future research toward the assessment of endophytic bacterial community in sugarcane and other biofuel crops.

Soil Structural Stability during Rapid Wetting: Influence of Land Use on Some Aggregate Properties

Abstract:A stable soil structure, resistant to the stresses induced by wetting, is important for maintaining agricultural productivity and reducing erosion. This study was undertaken to assess losses of soil structural stability resulting from long‐term, continuous sugarcane (Saccharinum officinarum L.) cultivation (20 yr) in two Brazilian soils (an Oxisol and an Alfisol). When compared with virgin sites, sugarcane cropping decreased the organic C concentration and the wet aggregate stability (WAS) of the soil. The differences for organic C concentration and WAS between land use systems extended to the 1‐m depth, in both soils, and were less prononced as depth increased. Cultivation also increased the extent of aggregate slaking relative to virgin sites. This increased sensitivity to structural damage could not be attributed to changes in aggregate cohesion; rather, it was observed that for the Alfisol, the greater slaking and mellowing (slaking without complete fragmentation) could be related to an increase in the rate of water uptake by the aggregate (1.9–3.4 times faster in the cultivated than in the virgin site) for the Alfisol. The pore tortuosity index was also 3.1 to 3.2 times higher in the virgin than in the cultivated site and indicated a pore network less efficient at transporting water within aggregates in the virgin site compared with the cultivated site. This suggests that the lower sensitivity to slaking in the virgin Alfisol was most likely caused by water entry within the aggregates slowed down by a clogged pore network.

Abstract:The addition of agricultural by-products to mineral soils has the potential to improve crop production. This study aimed to determine the effects of the readily available sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) milling by-product bagasse as a soil amendment on yields of sugarcane grown on a sandy Entisol of South Florida. The field trial was conducted on a commercial sugarcane farm for three annual crop cycles (plant cane and two ratoons). Four treatments including 5 cm bagasse (85 ton ha−1); 10 cm bagasse (170 ton ha−1); 10 cm bagasse (170 ton ha−1) plus 336 kg ha−1 ammonium nitrate; and a control (without bagasse and ammonium nitrate) were evaluated. Results indicate that one single application of bagasse increased sugarcane biomass and sugar yield by approximately 23% in the plant cane year. A higher application rate of bagasse (10 cm of bagasse) was recommended since it had a longer effect on increasing sugarcane biomass and sugar yield. Bagasse application enhanced silicon (Si) supply and increased Si plant nutrition. However, the effects of bagasse on the other leaf nutrients were not significant.

Abstract:Sugarcane, a C4 plant, provides most of the world’s sugar, and a substantial amount of renewable bioenergy, due to its unique sugar-accumulating and feedstock properties. Brazil, India, China, and Thailand are the four largest sugarcane producers worldwide, and the crop has the potential to be grown in arid and semi-arid regions if its stress tolerance can be improved. Modern sugarcane cultivars which exhibit a greater extent of polyploidy and agronomically important traits, such as high sugar concentration, biomass production, and stress tolerance, are regulated by complex mechanisms. Molecular techniques have revolutionized our understanding of the interactions between genes, proteins, and metabolites, and have aided in the identification of the key regulators of diverse traits. This review discusses various molecular techniques for dissecting the mechanisms underlying the sugarcane response to biotic and abiotic stresses. The comprehensive characterization of sugarcane’s response to various stresses will provide targets and resources for sugarcane crop improvement.

Abstract:Soil tillage operations had been carried out during the sugarcane planting to improve soil's physical quality, thus providing proper conditions for sugarcane growth. Long-term field experiments were designed to assess the implications of tillage operations during sugarcane planting on soil physical quality and the associated effects on sugarcane yields under two soil types in south-central Brazil. In 2013, two treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with four repetitions: (i) conventional tillage (CT) and ii) no-tillage (NT). Undisturbed soil samples were collected representing the row and inter-row positions to a 0.40-m depth (0-0.10, 0.10-0.20 and 0.20-0.40 m) over four crop cycles (from 2014 to 2017). In the laboratory, bulk density (BD), soil resistance to penetration (SRP), macroporosity (MaP) and microporosity (MiP) were evaluated. Additionally, sugarcane yields were measured annually using an instrumented truck equipped with load cells. CT management alleviated soil compaction only in the plant cane cycle, indicating that the intensive machinery traffic performed in sugarcane harvesting nullify the effects of tillage practices. The opening of planting furrow in both tillage systems reduced soil physical limitations, thus favoring the crop development in the row position. The changes in soil physical attributes were observed mostly in the inter-row position. In clayey soil, BD increased by 24 and 16%, and the SRP by 63 and 55% in the 0-0.10 m layer from plant cane to 3rd ratoon for CT and NT, respectively. Similarly, in sandy loam soil, the SRP increased over time in the 0-0.10 m layer for CT and NT, reaching values higher than 2 MPa. Likewise, MaP decreased for values lower than 0.10 m3 m−3 after four years for both soils and tillage systems. Regardless of soil type, tillage management did not show differences in sugarcane yields over the assessed period. Our findings suggest that NT could be a feasible strategy to reduce soil mobilization and its negative implications on several ecosystem services without compromise sugarcane yield.

Abstract:Sugarcane, Saccharum spp., in the United States is attacked by a number of different arthropod pests. The most serious among those pests are two stalk boring moths in the Family Crambidae: the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), and the Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar). The two species are affected by abiotic and biotic environmental stress factors. Water deficit and excessive soil nitrogen alter physical and physiochemical aspects of the sugarcane plant that make the crop increasingly vulnerable to E. loftini. Weed growth can be competitive with sugarcane but it also supports enhanced abundances and diversity of natural enemies that can suppress infestations of D. saccharalis. In an instance where the stalk borer is considered a stress factor, proximity of vulnerable crops to sugarcane can influence levels of E. loftini infestation of sugarcane. The adverse effects of each stress factor, in terms of stalk borer attack, can be reduced by adopting appropriate cultural practices, such as adequate irrigation, judicious use of nitrogen fertilizer, using noncompetitive weed growth, and not planting vulnerable crops near sugarcane fields. Understanding the relationships between stress factors and crop pests can provide valuable insights for plant breeders and tools for incorporation into integrated pest management strategies.

Abstract:Sugarcane is one of the main agro-industrial products consumed worldwide, and, therefore, the use of suitable soils is a key factor to maximize its production. As a result, the need to evaluate soil matrices, including many physical, chemical, and biological parameters, to determine the soil's aptitude for growing food crops increases. Machine learning techniques were used to perform an in-depth analysis of the physicochemical indicators of vertisol-type soils used in sugarcane production. The importance of the relationship between each of the indicators was studied. Furthermore, and the main objective of the present work, was the determination of the minimum number of the most important physicochemical indicators necessary to evaluate the agricultural suitability of the soils, with a view to reducing the number of analyses in terms of physicochemical indicators required for the evaluation. The results obtained relating to the estimation of agricultural capability using different numbers of parameters showed accuracy results of up to 91% when implementing three parameters: Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca) and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). The reported results, relating to the estimation of the physicochemical parameters, indicated that it was possible to estimate eleven physicochemical parameters with an average accuracy of 73% using only the data of K, Ca and CEC as input parameters in the Machine Learning models. Knowledge of these three parameters enables determination of the values of soil potential in regard to Hydrogen (pH), organic matter (OM), Phosphorus (P), Magnesium (Mg), Sulfur (S), Boron (B), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), and Zinc (Zn), the Calcium/Magnesium ratio (Ca/Mg), and also the texture of the soil.

Abstract:Microbes living inside or around sugarcane ( Saccharum spp.) are crucial for their resistance to abiotic and biotic stress, growth, and development. Sequences of microbial genomes and genes are helpful to understand the function of these microbes. However, there is currently a lack of such knowledge in sugarcane. Here, we combined Nanopore and Illumina sequencing technologies to successfully construct the first high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) and gene catalogues of sugarcane culturable microbes (GCSCMs), which contained 175 species-level genome bins (SGBs), and 7,771,501 non-redundant genes. The SGBs included 79 novel culturable bacteria genomes, and 3 bacterial genomes with nitrogen-fixing gene clusters. Four single scaffold near-complete circular MAGs (cMAGs) with 0% contamination were obtained from Nanopore sequencing data. In conclusion, we have filled a research gap in the genomes and gene catalogues of culturable microbes of sugarcane, providing a vital data resource for further understanding the genetic basis and functions of these microbes. In addition, our methodology and results can provide guidance and reference for other plant microbial genome and gene catalogue studies.

Abstract:Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is one of the world's highly significant commercial crops. The amounts of synthetic nitrogen (N2) fertilizer required to grow the sugarcane plant at its initial growth stages are higher, which increases the production costs and adverse environmental consequences globally. To combat this issue, sustainable environmental and economic concerns among researchers are necessary. The endophytic diazotrophs can offer significant amounts of nitrogen to crops through the biological nitrogen fixation mediated nif gene. The nifH gene is the most extensively utilized molecular marker in nature for studying N2 fixing microbiomes. The present research intended to determine the existence of novel endophytic diazotrophs through culturable and unculturable bacterial communities (EDBCs). The EDBCs of different tissues (root, stem, and leaf) of five sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum officinarum L. cv Badila, S. barberi Jesw.cv pansahi, S. robustum, S. spontaneum, and S. sinense Roxb.cv. Uba) were isolated and molecularly characterized to evaluate N2 fixation ability. The diversity of EDBCs was observed based on nifH gene Illumina MiSeq sequencing and a culturable approach. In this study, 319766 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified from 15 samples. The minimum number of OTUs was recorded in leaf tissues of S. robustum and maximum reads in root tissues of S. spontaneum. These data were assessed to ascertain the structure, diversity, abundance, and relationship between the microbial community. A total of 40 bacterial families with 58 genera were detected in different sugarcane species. Bacterial communities exhibited substantially different alpha and beta diversity. In total, 16 out of 20 genera showed potent N2-fixation in sugarcane and other crops. According to principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering (Bray–Curtis dis) evaluation of OTUs, bacterial microbiomes associated with root tissues differed significantly from stem and leaf tissues of sugarcane. Significant differences often were observed in EDBCs among the sugarcane tissues. We tracked and validated the plethora of individual phylum strains and assessed their nitrogenase activity with a culture-dependent technique. The current work illustrated the significant and novel results of many uncharted endophytic microbial communities in different tissues of sugarcane species, which provides an experimental system to evaluate the biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) mechanism in sugarcane. The novel endophytic microbial communities with N2-fixation ability play a remarkable and promising role in sustainable agriculture production.
