Abstract:Phosphorus is the crucial factor causing eutrophication in the aquatic ecology. The high phosphorus loading in water bodies may result from the direct disposal of untreated wastewater. In this study, a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) was specially developed to remove and recover phosphorus effectively and efficiently via struvite crystallization. Different physiochemical and hydraulic conditions, including hydraulic retention time (HRT), pH, and molar ratios of Mg : P, N : P and Ca : Mg, were explored to optimize the performance of this improved FBR. For the continuous operating trials, promising removal and recovery efficiencies were achieved at the phosphorus concentration of 25.0 mg/L: >90% of phosphorus could be removed under the optimum condition (pH=9, HRT=12 h, Mg : P=1.25 and N : P=7.5). Increasing the recycle flow rate and prolonging the contact time could also enhance the FBR efficiency. The crystal products obtained in FBR were analyzed in terms of composition and structure. Results indicated that almost pure struvite (>99%) was achieved at low calcium concentrations, which could be considered as a high quality fertilizer.

Abstract:A phosphorus crystallisation process for recovering phosphate was developed using porous calcium silicate hydrate (PCSH) as seed crystal. Phosphorus can be removed by producing hydroxyapatite (HAP) on the surface of seed crystal, which can be applied to the recovery of phosphates from wastewater. Influence factors were investigated. Results indicated that increasing the initial concentration of phosphorus, intensifying the stirring speed and decreasing the sample dosage were beneficial for the increase in phosphorus content in the resulting samples. The phosphorus content of samples after phosphorus recovery could reach 19·05%. On the basis of Ca2+ and OH− releasing from PCSH and characterisation results from X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, the mechanism of phosphorus recovery by PCSH as seed crystal in the weak alkaline condition was revealed. A large specific surface area and porous structure of PCSH provided local conditions to form a proper concentration for Ca2+ and OH− releasing. This condition could maintain the pH value at 8·0–9·0 in order to improve the production of HAP on the surface of PCSH.

Abstract:Anaerobic granular sludge was introduced to phosphorus removal system, creating a new process for phosphorus removal with the combination of biological medium addition and calcium hydroxyphosphate crystallization. The effects of pH, Ca/P ratio, HRT on the performance of new process were investigated to optimize process parameters. The results demonstrated that the optimal parameters were pH = 12, Ca/P = 3.34 (mole ratio), HRT = 60min for synthetic wastewater with phosphorus concentration of 30mg/L. Under the optimal condition, phosphorus removal efficiency was 99.81% and the effluent phosphorus concentration was 0.057mg/L. The new process was operated for the phosphorus removal from piggery wastewater, which phosphorus removal efficiency was 85.85% and the effluent phosphorus concentration was 4.67mg/L.The phosphorus was enriched in the product, especially in the top and central part of reactor. The phosphorus of product mainly existed in the form of hydroxyapatite and its content by P2O5 was 37. 68% and 36.57% respectively, which has reached the standard of high quality phosphate rock and has a high value for phosphorus reuse.

Abstract:Recovery of phosphorus from waste streams reduces dependence on imported phosphate rock, which is increasingly contaminated with heavy metals and radioactive by-products. This study proves it is possible to recover phosphorus through biologically induced precipitation in granular partial nitritation-anammox sludge. Granules with high inorganic content were harvested from a lab-scale partial nitritation-anammox reactor fed with centrate. Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Optical Emission Spectroscopy showed that the granules had a phosphate content of 36wt% P2O5 and a Ca/P ratio close to that of hydroxyapatite. Crystalline hydroxyapatite was confirmed accordingly by X-ray diffraction. ICP further showed that the metals content complied with fertilizer regulations as well as with requirements from the phosphorus industry. The results are promising as they raise the possibility of recovering phosphorus from urban wastewater without the addition of chemicals.

Abstract:Phosphorus is an essential nutrient but faces foreseeable resource depletion. The incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) is a promising source for recovering phosphorus. In this study, we proposed a new system for recovering phosphorus from ISSA. This innovative system uses phosphorus-selective adsorbent to purify phosphorus from the ISSA acid leachate. Laboratory scale batch and column tests were performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the system. Note that >70% of phosphorus in ISSA can be recovered as a high-purity recovery product. The product showed a structure similar to hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH). The total amount of Ca, P, and O in the product was above 90 wt%. The content of trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, and Pb) in the product was below the fertilizer limits, suggesting that the health and environmental risks of using fertilizer in agriculture are negligible. The expected costs of the system were estimated. The reusability of the adsorbent can reduce the operational costs to a satisfactory level. This study provides a practical alternative for recovering phosphorus from ISSA.

Abstract:Achieving phosphorus (P) recovery during treatment and disposal of waste activated sludge (WAS) by anaerobic-based processes has received increasing attention. To solve the problem of low phosphorus release efficiency, anaerobic fermentation (AF) combined with acidic cation exchange resin (ACER) pretreatment was first proposed in this study. Results showed that the isoelectric point pretreatment with ACER increased the recoverable phosphorus content by 2.3 times compared to that without ACER pretreatment. Phosphorus transformation was systematically analyzed from a whole-process perspective, and the results visually revealed that the release of phosphorus during the conventional AF process (without ACER pretreatment) was limited by insufficient phosphorus release from extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and mineral precipitation, as well as the reprecipitation of soluble phosphorus with metals. ACER enabled effective dissolution of mineral phosphorus by acidifying WAS. On the other hand, ACER adsorbed metals to promote EPS disintegration and hydrolysis, thereby enhancing the release of EPS-bound P, which also reduced the reprecipitation of soluble phosphorus during AF. Furthermore, ACER pretreatment increased volatile fatty acids production by >2-fold with enhanced sludge hydrolysis. This finding has important implications for both non-renewable phosphorus recovery and sludge resource recovery.

Abstract:Recycling phosphorus from waste activated sludge (WAS) is an effective method to address the nonrenewable nature of phosphorus and mitigate environmental pollution. To overcome the challenge of low phosphorus recovery from WAS due to insufficient disintegration, a method using a citric acid-based natural deep eutectic solvent (CA-NADES) assisted with low-temperature pretreatment was proposed to efficiently release and recover phosphorus. The results of 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) confirmed that low-temperature pretreatment promoted the conversion of organic phosphorus (OP) to inorganic phosphorus (IP) and enhanced the effect of CA-NADES. Changes in the three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) and flow cytometry (FCM) indicated that the method of CA-NADES with low-temperature thermal simultaneously release IP and OP by disintegrating sludge flocs, dissolving extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) structure, and cracking cells. When 5 % (v/v) of CA-NADES was added and thermally treated at 60 °C for 30 min, 43 % of total phosphorus (TP) was released from the sludge. The concentrations of proteins and polysaccharides reached 826 and 331 mg/L, respectively, which were 6.30 and 14.43 times higher than those of raw sludge. The dewatering and settling of the sludge were also improved. Metals were either enriched in the solid phase or released into the liquid phase in small quantities (most efficiencies of less than 10 %) for subsequent clean recovery. The released phosphorus was successfully recovered as vivianite with a rate of 90 %. This study develops an efficient, green, and sustainable method for phosphorus recovery from sludge using NADES and provides new insights into the high-value conversion of sludge.

Abstract:In the current investigation, the feasibility of phosphorus removal in the anaerobic digestion of excess sludge by adding waste iron scrap (WIS) was studied. The results show that the removal efficiency of phosphorus increases with the amount of WIS, and the maximum removal efficiency could reach 39%, 93% and 99% at WIS dosages of 1, 2 and 3 g/L, respectively. Sterilization greatly decreases the removal efficiency of phosphorus, having only -6%, 53% and 64% at WIS dosages of 1, 2 and 3 g/L, respectively. This means that iron-reducing bacteria and hydrolytic bacteria enhance 45%, 40% and 35% of phosphorus removal at WIS dosages of 1, 2 and 3 g/L, respectively. The first and the most important mechanism of phosphorus removal using WIS is hydrolytic bacteria, which reduce the pH of sludge to corrode the WIS, followed by precipitation of phosphorus by ferrous iron generated from the iron-reducing bacteria. Phosphorus adsorption onto the WIS is the second probable mechanism. The removed phosphorus is recovered up to 56% using magnet. This method is characterized by high removal efficiency, easy and steady operation, low cost, recovery and reuse, making it better than other physical and chemical treatments.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is an essential element to produce feed and fertilizers but also a non-renewable resource. Both the predicted exhaustion of phosphatic rocks and the risk of eutrophication lead to an increasing necessity of P recovery methodologies to be applied in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). One of the most promising solutions involves the precipitation of P-based minerals reusable as slow-release fertilizers. In this study, P recovery as struvite and hydroxyapatite from a municipal WWTP digestate liquid fraction (centrate) was investigated at varying pH (8-10), reagent typologies (MgCl2 , NaOH, Ca(OH)2 , CaCl2 ) and concentrations under limiting magnesium doses through liquid- and solid-phase analyses and thermodynamical modelling. A maximum P recovery of 87.3% was achieved at pH = 9 by adding NaOH and a MgCl2 dose of 656 mg/L (the higher tested). According to this data, it was estimated that 92.0 tons/year of struvite and 33.2 tons/year of hydroxyapatite could be recovered from the WWTP centrate with a cost for reagent consumption being almost 50% of the mean P market value. An increase of P precipitation was observed when comparing experiments with same pH values but higher Mg2+ dose. Ca2+ addition led to extensive P precipitation but mainly as amorphous phases that interfere with struvite formation. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The recovery of phosphorus is so far limited to recovering phosphorus as struvite or vivianite from the supernatant of digester, but this process is not economically viable. In this study, a biofilm reactor was operated to directly enrich phosphorus from sewage to investigate whether phosphorus harvest affected the phosphorus uptake/release of phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) and evaluated the potential of phosphorus recovery from concentrated liquid. The results showed that phosphorus was quickly released in the new recirculated solution by PAOs with saturated poly-phosphate after phosphorus harvest, which promoted the synthesis or degradation of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and glycogen in PAOs, restoring its ability to absorb phosphorus. Although the results of crystallization experiments demonstrated that there were traces of K-struvite and Na-struvite (<0.1 wt%) in precipitate, the simultaneous precipitation of compounds could not significantly affect the purity of products. Using the concentrated solution with a phosphorus concentration of 168.5 ± 2.7 mg·L −1 as phosphorus source for struvite precipitation achieved phosphorus recovery efficiency of 74.5–95.8% and obtained struvite crystals with a size of 83.5–114.3 μm, whereas the quantity of fine products (<10 μm) was rised due to an increase in saturation. Especially, the highest phosphorus recovery efficiency (95.8 ± 3.2%) was obtained at pH= 8.5 and Mg: P = 1.5. Moreover, life cycle assessment (LCA) analysis indicated that the CO 2 equivalent emission of struvite production was 0.64–1.01 kg CO 2 equivalent/kg struvite, and the phosphorus recovery efficiency and environmental impact could be balanced at pH= 8.5 and Mg: P = 1.5:1.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) recovery is important to reduce the dependence on natural and limited resources of phosphate rock, which can simultaneously prevent phosphorus discharge into the environment, thereby creating environmental issues such as eutrophication. One of the possible approaches to recycle phosphorus is to directly use sewage sludge as a fertilizer on arable land. Sewage sludge contains a high concentration of phosphorus, which can be suitable and alternative source of phosphate fertilizer. However, purification and removal of trace levels of phosphorus from the sewage sludge is necessary. In this review, information on appropriate strategies to the recovery of phosphorus from the sewage sludge through chemical treatment processes are collected from Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and Embase to find the necessary literature on phosphorus recovery from the sludge using thermal or/and chemical treatment methods. The chemical methods such as adding calcium hydrate silicate, sulfuric acid, electrodialysis recovery, burning, hydrothermal and struvite have been explored to recover phosphorus from both sludge and sludge ash obtained from burning. The chemical/thermal methods have high efficiency for phosphorus recovery along with the simultaneous removal of heavy metals; these methods are considered promising for extracting the phosphorus from sewage sludge and ashes.

Abstract:In this study, a novel acidogenic phosphorus recovery (APR) process was developed in combination with iron-facilitated primary sedimentation for enhanced phosphorus (P) removal and recovery in wastewater treatment. Compare with the current P recovery methods from the wastewater sludge by acidic chemical leaching, the new method process has advantages such as easy operation, high recovery efficiency, valuable by-products and little secondary pollution. The experimental results show that over 94.6% chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 89.6% P were reliably removed from municipal wastewater. In fermentation system, more than 80% of total Fe was reduced as Fe(II) through dissimilatory iron reduction in fermenters and about 40% of total P can be recovered from the wastewater influent in the form of vivianite. Acidogenic fermentation and dissimilatory iron reduction were identified as two essential processes for the P release and recovery from the sludge.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) recovery from waste water must become a predominant goal of all countries to face the limited resources of this essential nutrient. The induced crystallisation of calcium phosphates straight from the waste water phase applying tobermorite-rich calcium silicate hydrate compounds (CSH) from the construction industry as the trigger material has proved to be a suitable method. Laboratory and semi-technical scale experiments were carried out in fixed bed, stirred reactor and expanded bed mode. P-loads of the crystallisation substrates of up to 13 wt-% total P (P-tot) (30 wt-% P2O5) were achieved. Recycling options of the generated products, both as substitute for phosphate rock in the phosphate industry and as a new fertiliser in agriculture, were demonstrated. Indicative operating and investment costs were estimated for conversion of conventional waste water treatment plants (WWTP) designed for nutrient removal and P-precipitation with iron and aluminium reagents to the proposed new crystallisation technology for simultaneous P-removal and P-recovery.

Phosphates Recovery through Hydroxyapatite Crystallization from Wastewater Using Converter Slag as a Seed Crystal

Abstract:With powdered converter slag used as a seed crystal, the effects of slag dosage, pH, temperature, and Ca2+ concentration on phosphate removal from synthetic solution through crystallization were investigated in batch experiments. The results indicated that slag concentration of 1.7 g/L, pH value of 9-10, reaction time of 3h , reaction temperature of 20-25℃, Ca/P molar ratio of 2, seemed to be the favorable conditions. Under the optimal reaction condition, the removal efficiencies of the swine farm wastewater and the supernate of concentrated sludge , were 95.36% and 96.54%, respectively. After converter slag as a seed material was used for ten times, the P removal efficiency was still above 80%. The Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of converter slag before and after phosphorus crystallization confirmed the formation of crystalline hydroxyapatite. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping analysis revealed that the molar composition ratio of Ca/P of the crystalline material was 1.72. The Ca/P molar ratio > 1.67 for crystalline substance might result from the presence of CaCO3 on the crystalline surfaces. The results indicated that total P contents in the generated crystallization products of up to 14.5 % P-tot (33.2 % P2O5) were achieved, and was comparable to natural phosphate rock.

Abstract:Phosphorus, as an essential nutrient for plant growth, is crucial for the development of agriculture. In this study, a novel strategy using a zirconium-modified acid-leaching residue adsorbent (Zr-AR adsorbent) was proposed for the efficient and selective recovery of phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA). 0.2 mol/L HCl were optimized for the phosphorus extraction from ISSA. The acid-leaching residue with large pore structure and high specific surface area was first reused as a support to prepare Zr-AR adsorbent for a twofold resource uti-lization of ISSA. Without removing impurities from the leachate, the Zr-AR adsorbent could selectively adsorb phosphorus with a maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity of 53.1 +/- 0.8 mg/g in the HCl system. During 5 phosphorus adsorption-desorption processes, the adsorption and desorption ratios of phosphorus remained stable at over 90 %, indicating the high stability of the Zr-AR adsorbent for selective phosphorus recovery. Without adjusting the pH, hydroxyapatite was produced from the phosphorus-rich solution with a phosphorus content of 33.4 +/- 1.3 % P2O5, which could significantly promote the growth of ryegrass as a phosphorus fer-tilizer. The cost of the phosphorus recovery from ISSA was also preliminarily evaluated ($3.76 kg-P product), demonstrating the application potential of this strategy.

Abstract:Combined phosphorus (P) removal and recovery from wastewater is a sensible and sustainable choice in view of potential future P-resource scarcity, due to dwindling primary global reserves. P-recovery from wastewater, notwithstanding the relatively small fraction of total global amounts involved (less than 1/5 of total global use ends up in wastewater) could extend the lifespan of available reserves and improve wastewater cycle sustainability. The recovery of the resource, rather than its mere removal as ferric or aluminum salt, will still allow to achieve protection of receiving waters quality, while saving on P-sludge disposal costs. To demonstrate the possibility of such a recovery, a strategy combining enhanced biological phosphorus removal and mineral P-precipitation was studied, by considering possible process modifications of a large treatment facility. Process simulation, a pilot study, and precipitation tests were conducted. The results demonstrated that it would be possible to convert this facility from chemical -precipitation to its biological removal followed by mineral precipitation, with minimal structural intervention. Considerable P-recovery could be obtained, either in form of struvite or, more sustainably, as calcium phosphate, a mineral that also has possible fertilizing applications. The latter would present a cost about one order of magnitude lower than the former.

Abstract:Waste activated sludge (WAS) has attracted considerable attention as an excellent material for P recovery from sewage. This study took concentrated phosphorus removal sludge as objective, and aimed at providing an effective route to promote the transformation of polyphosphate in sludge pellets to dissolved phosphate. After acid pH adjustment, total dissolved phosphate at pH 3.0 was 37.3-fold higher than that at natural pH. The P distribution results illustrated that acid pH accelerated the degradation of short chain polyphosphate into orthophosphate. Furthermore, cell staining results confirmed that the polyphosphate was sourced from the leakage of intracellular matters. Low field NMR and rheology properties analysis were adopted to illustrate that acid pH treatment further improved WAS dewatering performances. Accompanied with the reduction of heavy metals in WAS pellets, the acid pH treatment was also beneficial for WAS subsequent treatment or final disposal. Lastly, Fe3+ addition was proposed as favorable P recovery method, and spherical nanometric materials of FePO4 crystal was obtained accordingly.

Abstract:Waste streams offer a compelling opportunity to recover phosphorus (P). 15-20% of world demand for phosphate rock could theoretically be satisfied by recovering phosphorus from domestic waste streams alone. For very dilute streams (<10 mg PL(-1)), including domestic wastewater, it is necessary to concentrate phosphorus in order to make recovery and reuse feasible. This review discusses enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) as a key technology to achieve this. EBPR relies on polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) to take up phosphorus from waste streams, so concentrating phosphorus in biomass. The P-rich biosolids can be either directly applied to land, or solubilized and phosphorus recovered as a mineral product. Direct application is effective, but the product is bulky and carries contaminant risks that need to be managed. Phosphorus release can be achieved using either thermochemical or biochemical methods, while recovery is generally by precipitation as struvite. We conclude that while EBPR technology is mature, the subsequent phosphorus release and recovery technologies need additional development.

Abstract:Municipal digested sludge (MDS) has considerable phosphorus content that is between 1% and 15% in dry matter and it is a potential source for phosphorus recovery. A high amount of MDS is generated from sewage treatment plants in large cities and has many environmental concerns with its organic and inorganic constituents. In this study, phosphorus was recovered by precipitation with Ca(OH)2 and NaOH. Acid pretreatment was applied to MDS with H2SO4 and 58.7% of phosphorus was extracted from the solid phase to the liquid phase at pH 2. Up to 99% of dissolved phosphorus in the liquid phase was recovered with Ca(OH)2 and NaOH. Almost similar phosphorus precipitation rates were achieved with both bases but higher phosphorus contents (17% as P2O5) in precipitates were obtained by NaOH. The product obtained in this study can serve as a high‐quality raw material substitute for the low‐grade phosphate rocks (<15% P2O5) commonly utilized in the phosphate industry. Furthermore, this research presents a practical, environmentally friendly and cost‐effective approach for sustainable sludge management and phosphorus production.
