Abstract:The estimability of quantized dynamic linear systems was discussed from information theoretic point of view. The presented definitions were reviewed and extended to more general systems. Criterions of estimability for systems with quantized outputs were proposed based on the measure of mutual information. These obtained condition of estimability consists with our intuition very well and provides us with intrinsic perspective for the quantizer design. Furthermore, the convergence property of the quantized estimability Gramian was analyzed. The mathematical analysis is verified by illustrative simulations.

Abstract:It is possible to introduce external time dependent back ground fields in the formulation of a system as fields whose dynamics can not be deduced from Euler Lagrange equations of motion. This method leads to singular Lagrangians for real systems. We discuss quantization of constraint systems in these cases and introduce generalized Gupta-Bleuler quantization. In two examples we show explicitly that this method of quantization leads to true Schrödinger equations.

Abstract:We present a quantization scheme of an arbitrary measure space based on overcomplete families of states and generalizing the Klauder and the Berezin-Toeplitz approaches. This scheme could reveal itself as an efficient tool for quantizing physical systems for which more traditional methods like geometric quantization are uneasy to implement. The procedure is illustrated by (mostly two-dimensional) elementary examples in which the measure space is a $N$-element set and the unit interval. Spaces of states for the $N$-element set and the unit interval are the 2-dimensional euclidean $\R^2$ and hermitian $\C^2$ planes.

Quantization of counterexamples to Dirac's conjecture

Abstract:Dirac's conjecture, that secondary first-class constraints generate transformations that do not change the physical system's state, has various counterexamples. Since no matching gauge conditions can be imposed, the Dirac bracket cannot be defined, and restricting the phase space first and then quantizing is an inconsistent procedure. The latter observation has discouraged the study of systems of this kind more profoundly, while Dirac's conjecture is assumed generally valid. We point out, however, that secondary first-class constraints are just initial conditions that do not imply Poisson's bracket modification, and we carry out the quantization successfully by imposing these constraints on the initial state of the wave function. We apply the method to two Dirac's conjecture counterexamples, including Cawley's iconical system.

Abstract:For a general infinite system of convex inequalities in a Banach space, we study the basic constraint qualification and its relationship with other fundamental concepts, including various versions of conditions of Slater type, the Mangasarian--Fromovitz constraint qualification, as well as the Pshenichnyi--Levin--Valadier property introduced by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Applications are given in the restricted range approximation problem, constrained optimization problems, as well as in the approximation problem with constraints by conditionally positive semidefinite functions.
Symplectic Quantization and General Constraint Structure of a Prototypical Second-Class System

Abstract:We discuss a general prototypical constrained Hamiltonian system with a broad application in quantum field theory and similar contexts where dynamics is defined through a functional action obeying a stationarity principle. The prototypical model amounts to a Dirac-Bergmann singular system, whose constraints restrict the actual dynamics to occur within a differential submanifold, as is the case in the major part of field theoretical models with gauge symmetry. We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm in its full generality unraveling a total of $4m$ second-class constraints and obtain the corresponding Dirac brackets algebra in phase space. We follow with the Faddeev-Jackiw-Barcelos-Wotzasek approach in which the geometric character of the mentioned submanifold is emphasized by means of an internal metric function encoding its symplectic properties. We consider two straightforward examples, applying our general results to constrained motion along a toroidal geometry and to a Lorentz violating toy model in field theory. Since toroidal geometry has been recently used in cosmological models, we suggest how our results could lead to different proposals for the shape of the universe in cosmology.

Abstract:Classical mechanics involves position and momentum variables that must be special coordinates chosen to promote to suitable quantum operators. Since classical variables may be broadly chosen, only unique variables should be chosen. We will outline how the favored variables and their suitable quantum operators is guaranteed to assure a truly valid quantization. Invalid quantizations may be mistaken for valid ones, which then leads to incorrect physics. Besides particle examples, there is also a brief run-through for fields and gravity.

Abstract:In this paper, for a given family of constraints and the classical Cantor distribution we determine the constrained optimal sets of $n$-points, $n$th constrained quantization errors for all positive integers $n$. We also calculate the constrained quantization dimension and the constrained quantization coefficient, and see that the constrained quantization dimension $D(P)$ exists as a finite positive number, but the $D(P)$-dimensional constrained quantization coefficient does not exist.

Abstract:The quantization scheme in probability theory deals with finding a best approximation of a given probability distribution by a probability distribution that is supported on finitely many points. In this paper, first we state and prove a theorem, and then give a conjecture. We verify the conjecture by a few examples. Assuming that the conjecture is true, for a set of discrete distributions on the set of natural numbers we have calculated the optimal sets of $n$-means and the $n$th quantization errors for all positive integers $n$. In addition, the quantization dimension is also calculated.

Abstract:A temporally varying discretization often features in discrete gravitational systems and appears in lattice field theory models subject to a coarse graining or refining dynamics. To better understand such discretization changing dynamics in the quantum theory, an according formalism for constrained variational discrete systems is constructed. While the present manuscript focuses on global evolution moves and, for simplicity, restricts to Euclidean configuration spaces, a companion article discusses local evolution moves. In order to link the covariant and canonical picture, the dynamics of the quantum states is generated by propagators which satisfy the canonical constraints and are constructed using the action and group averaging projectors. This projector formalism offers a systematic method for tracing and regularizing divergences in the resulting state sums. Non-trivial coarse graining evolution moves lead to non-unitary, and thus irreversible, projections of physical Hilbert spaces and Dirac observables such that these concepts become evolution move dependent on temporally varying discretizations. The formalism is illustrated in a toy model mimicking a `creation from nothing'. Subtleties arising when applying such a formalism to quantum gravity models are discussed.

Abstract:To a complex symplectic manifold X we associate a canonical quantization algebroid. Our construction is similar to that of Polesello-Schapira's deformation-quantization algebroid, but the deformation parameter is no longer central. If X is compact, the triangulated category of regular holonomic quantization modules is a linear complex Calabi-Yau category of dimension 1 + dim X.

Abstract:Geometric quantization is a natural way to construct quantum models starting from classical data. In this work, we start from a symplectic vector space with an inner product and — using techniques of geometric quantization — construct the quantum algebra and equip it with a distinguished state. We compare our result with the construction due to Sorkin — which starts from the same input data — and show that our distinguished state coincides with the Sorkin-Johnson state. Sorkin's construction was originally applied to the free scalar field over a causal set (locally finite, partially ordered set). Our perspective suggests a natural generalization to less linear examples, such as an interacting field.

Abstract:Motivated by certain concepts introduced by the Refined Algebraic Quantization formalism for constrained systems which has been successfully applied within the context of Loop Quantum Gravity, in this paper we propose a phase space implementation of the Dirac quantization formalism to appropriately include systems with constraints. In particular, we propose a physically prescribed Wigner distribution which allows the definition of a well-defined inner product by judiciously introducing a star version of the group averaging of the constraints. This star group averaging procedure is obtained by considering the star-exponential of the constraints and then integrating with respect to a suitable measure. In this manner, the proposed physical Wigner distribution explicitly solves the constraints by including generalized functions on phase space. Finally, in order to illustrate our approach, our proposal is tested in a couple of simple examples which recover standard results found in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an approach to quantize singular systems. This is an extension of the constant integration method (Belhadi et al. (2014)) which is applicable only for the case of exactly solvable systems. In our approach, we determine Dirac brackets at the initial instant with the help of Taylor expansion, and using their covariance, we deduce the brackets at any time. We also illustrate our approach by studying two systems: the self-dual model and the Dirac spinorial field. Abstract:We develop a thermodynamic description of particles held at a fixed surface potential. This system is of particular interest in view of the continuing controversy over the possibility of a fluid-fluid phase separation in aqueous colloidal suspensions with monovalent counterions. The condition of fixed surface potential allows in a natural way to account for the colloidal charge renormalization. In a first approach, we assess the importance of the so called ``volume terms'', and find that in the absence of salt, charge renormalization is sufficient to stabilize suspension against a fluid-fluid phase separation. Presence of salt, on the other hand, is found to lead to an instability. A very strong dependence on the approximations used, however, puts the reality of this phase transition in a serious doubt. To further understand the nature of the instability we next study a Jellium-like approximation, which does not lead to a phase separation and produces a relatively accurate analytical equation of state for a deionized suspensions of highly charged colloidal spheres. A critical analysis of various theories of strongly asymmetric electrolytes is presented to asses their reliability as compared to the Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:Expository notes which combine a historical survey of the development of quantum physics with a review of selected mathematical topics in quantization theory (addressed to students that are not complete novices in quantum mechanics). After recalling in the introduction the early stages of the quantum revolution, and recapitulating in Sect. 2.1 some basic notions of symplectic geometry, we survey in Sect. 2.2 the so called prequantization thus preparing the ground for an outline of geometric quantization (Sect. 2.3). In Sect. 3 we apply the general theory to the study of basic examples of quantization of Kaehler manifolds. In Sect. 4 we review the Weyl and Wigner maps and the work of Groenewold and Moyal that laid the foundations of quantum mechanics in phase space, ending with a brief survey of the modern development of deformation quantization. Sect. 5 provides a review of second quantization and its mathematical interpretation. We point out that the treatment of (nonrelativistic) bound states requires going beyond the neat mathematical formalization of the concept of second quantization. An appendix is devoted to Pascual Jordan, the least known among the creators of quantum mechanics and the chief architect of the "theory of quantized matter waves".
