Abstract:For a general infinite system of convex inequalities in a Banach space, we study the basic constraint qualification and its relationship with other fundamental concepts, including various versions of conditions of Slater type, the Mangasarian--Fromovitz constraint qualification, as well as the Pshenichnyi--Levin--Valadier property introduced by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Applications are given in the restricted range approximation problem, constrained optimization problems, as well as in the approximation problem with constraints by conditionally positive semidefinite functions.
Symplectic Quantization and General Constraint Structure of a Prototypical Second-Class System

Abstract:We discuss a general prototypical constrained Hamiltonian system with a broad application in quantum field theory and similar contexts where dynamics is defined through a functional action obeying a stationarity principle. The prototypical model amounts to a Dirac-Bergmann singular system, whose constraints restrict the actual dynamics to occur within a differential submanifold, as is the case in the major part of field theoretical models with gauge symmetry. We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm in its full generality unraveling a total of $4m$ second-class constraints and obtain the corresponding Dirac brackets algebra in phase space. We follow with the Faddeev-Jackiw-Barcelos-Wotzasek approach in which the geometric character of the mentioned submanifold is emphasized by means of an internal metric function encoding its symplectic properties. We consider two straightforward examples, applying our general results to constrained motion along a toroidal geometry and to a Lorentz violating toy model in field theory. Since toroidal geometry has been recently used in cosmological models, we suggest how our results could lead to different proposals for the shape of the universe in cosmology.

Abstract:It is possible to introduce external time dependent back ground fields in the formulation of a system as fields whose dynamics can not be deduced from Euler Lagrange equations of motion. This method leads to singular Lagrangians for real systems. We discuss quantization of constraint systems in these cases and introduce generalized Gupta-Bleuler quantization. In two examples we show explicitly that this method of quantization leads to true Schrödinger equations.

Abstract:We calculate the two flavor equation of state for QCD on lattices with lattice spacing a=(6T)^{-1} and find that cutoff effects are substantially reduced compared to an earlier study using a=(4T)^{-1}. However, it is likely that significant cutoff effects remain. We fit the lattice data to expected forms of the free energy density for a second order phase transition at zero-quark-mass, which allows us to extrapolate the equation of state to m_q=0 and to extract the speed of sound. We find that the equation of state depends weakly on the quark mass for small quark mass.

Abstract:Dynamical systems, described by Lagrangians with first- and second-class constraints, are investigated. In the Dirac approach to the generalized Hamiltonian formalism, the classification and separation of the first- and second-class constraints are presented with the help of passing to an equivalent canonical set of constraints. The general structure of second-class constraints is clarified. The method of constructing the generator of symmetry transformations in the second Noether theorem is given. It is proved that second-class constraints do not contribute to the transformation law of the local symmetry which entirely is entirely stipulated by all the first-class constraints.

Quantization of systems with temporally varying discretization I: Evolving Hilbert spaces

Abstract:A temporally varying discretization often features in discrete gravitational systems and appears in lattice field theory models subject to a coarse graining or refining dynamics. To better understand such discretization changing dynamics in the quantum theory, an according formalism for constrained variational discrete systems is constructed. While the present manuscript focuses on global evolution moves and, for simplicity, restricts to Euclidean configuration spaces, a companion article discusses local evolution moves. In order to link the covariant and canonical picture, the dynamics of the quantum states is generated by propagators which satisfy the canonical constraints and are constructed using the action and group averaging projectors. This projector formalism offers a systematic method for tracing and regularizing divergences in the resulting state sums. Non-trivial coarse graining evolution moves lead to non-unitary, and thus irreversible, projections of physical Hilbert spaces and Dirac observables such that these concepts become evolution move dependent on temporally varying discretizations. The formalism is illustrated in a toy model mimicking a `creation from nothing'. Subtleties arising when applying such a formalism to quantum gravity models are discussed.

The unphysicality of Hilbert spaces

Abstract:We show that Hilbert spaces should not be considered the ``correct'' spaces to represent quantum states mathematically. We first prove that the requirements posited by complex inner product spaces are physically justified. We then show that completeness in the infinite-dimensional case requires the inclusion of states with infinite expectations, coordinate transformations that take finite expectations to infinite ones and vice-versa, and time evolutions that transform finite expectations to infinite ones in finite time. This makes Hilbert spaces physically unsound as they model a potential infinity as an actual infinity. We suspect that at least some problems in quantum theory related to infinities may be ultimately caused by the wrong space being used. We strongly believe a better solution can be found, and we look at Schwartz spaces for inspiration, as, among other things, they guarantee that the expectation of all polynomials of position and momentum are finite, their elements are uniquely identified by these expectations, and they are the only space closed under Fourier transform.

Quantization of counterexamples to Dirac's conjecture

Abstract:Dirac's conjecture, that secondary first-class constraints generate transformations that do not change the physical system's state, has various counterexamples. Since no matching gauge conditions can be imposed, the Dirac bracket cannot be defined, and restricting the phase space first and then quantizing is an inconsistent procedure. The latter observation has discouraged the study of systems of this kind more profoundly, while Dirac's conjecture is assumed generally valid. We point out, however, that secondary first-class constraints are just initial conditions that do not imply Poisson's bracket modification, and we carry out the quantization successfully by imposing these constraints on the initial state of the wave function. We apply the method to two Dirac's conjecture counterexamples, including Cawley's iconical system.

Abstract:We discuss a new class of spectral problems discovered recently which occupies an intermediate position between the exactly-solvable problems (e.g., harmonic oscillator) and all others. The problems belonging to this class are distinguished by the fact that a part of the eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions can be found algebraically, but not the whole spectrum. The reason explaining the existence of the quasi-exactly-solvable problems is a hidden dynamical symmetry present in the hamiltonian. For one-dimensional motion this hidden symmetry isSL(2,R). It is shown that other groups lead to a partial algebraization in multidimensional quantal problems. In particular,SL(2,R)×SL(2,R),SO(3) andSL(3,R) are relevant to two-dimensional motion inducing a class of quasi-exactly-solvable two-dimensional hamiltonians. Typically they correspond to systems in a curved space, but sometimes the curvature turns out to be zero. Graded algebras open the possibility of constructing quasi-exactlysolvable hamiltonians acting on multicomponent wave functions. For example, with a (non-minimal) superextension ofSL(2,R) we get a hamiltonian describing the motion of a spinor particle.

Abstract:In this note we study inclusions of second quantization algebras, namely inclusions of von Neumann algebras on the Fock space of a separable complex Hilbert space H, generated by the Weyl unitaries with test functions in closed, real linear subspaces of H. We show that the class of irreducible inclusions of standard second quantization algebras is non empty, and that they are depth two inclusions, namely the third relative commutant of the Jones' tower is a factor. When the smaller vector space has codimension n into the bigger, we prove that the corresponding inclusion of second quantization algebras is given by a cross product with R^n. This shows in particular that the inlcusions studied in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/9703129" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/9703129">hep-th/9703129</a>, namely the inclusion of the observable algebra corresponding to a bounded interval for the (n+p)-th derivative of the current algebra on the real line into the observable algebra for the same interval and the n-th derivative theory is given by a cross product with R^p. On the contrary, when the codimension is infinite, we show that the inclusion may be non regular (cf. M. Enock, R. Nest, J. Funct. Anal. 137 (1996), 466-543), hence do not correspond to a cross product with a locally compact group.

Abstract:Abstract For the constraint variety in symplectic manifold, the solvable Hamiltonian vector fields on the constraint are investigated. According to P.A.M. Dirac [3], the space of solvable Hamiltonian systems is determined by the geometric restriction of the symplectic form to the constraint. Solvability condition of the generalized Hamiltonian systems is extended to singular varieties and applied under some assumption on singularities. The constraint being a smooth submanifold in a symplectic space was considered in [6]. In this paper, we investigate the solvability of generalized Hamiltonian systems and the constraint invariants on singular constraints in the constant rank case.

Abstract:The quantization of a massive spin $1/2$ field that satisfies the Klein-Gordon equation is studied. The framework is consistent, provided it is formulated as a pseudo-hermitian quantum field theory by the redefinition of the field dual and the identification of an operator that modifies the inner product of states in Hilbert space to preserve a real energy spectrum and unitary evolution. Since the fermion field has mass dimension one, the theory admits renormalizable fermion self-interactions.

Abstract:Typical dualities in arbitrary dimensions are understood through a Hilbert-space extension method. By these results, we rigorously dualize the quantum ingappabilities to discrete height model in one dimension which is inaccessible by earlier work such as flux-insertion arguments. It turns out that the ingappabilities of quantum discrete height model is protected by an exotic "modulating" translation symmetry, which is a combination of modulating internal symmetry transformation and the conventional lattice translation. It can be also generalize to higher-form gauge fields in arbitrary dimensions, e.g., $\mathbb{Z}$-gauge theory in two dimensions with $\mathbb{Z}$ one-form symmetry and a modulating translation symmetry.

Abstract:Classical integrable Hamiltonian systems generated by elements of the Poisson commuting ring of spectral invariants on rational coadjoint orbits of the loop algebra$$\widetilde{\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}}^{ + *} (2,\mathbb{R})$$ are integrated by separation of variables in the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in hyperellipsoidal coordinates. The canonically quantized systems are then shown to also be completely integrable and separable within the same coordinates. Pairs of second class constraints defining reduced phase spaces are implemented in the quantized systems by choosing one constraint as an invariant, and interpreting the other as determining a quotient (i.e. by treating one as a first class constraint and the other as a gauge condition). Completely integrable, separable systems on spheres and ellipsoids result, but those on ellipsoids require a further modification of order$$\mathcal{O}(\hbar ^2 )$$ in the commuting invariants in order to assure self-adjointness and to recover the Laplacian for the case of free motion. for each case — in the ambient space ℝn, the sphere and the ellipsoid — the Schrödinger equations are completely separated in hyperellipsoidal coordinates, giving equations of generalized Lamé type.

Abstract:We have studied quantum systems on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and found that all these systems are connected through local transformations. Actually, we have shown that these transformations give rise to a gauge group that connects the Hamiltonian operators associated with each quantum system. This bridge allows us to connect different quantum systems, in such a way that studying one of them allows to understand the other through a gauge transformation. Furthermore, we included the case where the Hamiltonian operator can be time-dependent. An application for this construction will be achieved in the theory of control quantum systems.

Abstract:We present a theoretical framework based on second quantization in Liouville space to treat open quantum systems. We consider an ensemble of identical quantum emitters characterized by a discrete set of quantum states. The second quantization is performed directly at the level of density matrices, thereby significantly reducing the size of the Liouville space. In contrast to conventional Hilbert space techniques, statistically mixed states and dissipation are naturally incorporated. As a particular example of application, we study the effect of incoherent processes and statistical mixing of emitters' initial states in the interaction with quantum light. Moreover, we link our framework to a phase-space description of the dynamics, which can overcome the computational limitations of our method with the increasing number of particles.

Abstract:Quantum integrable systems and their classical counterparts are considered. We show that the symplectic structure and invariant tori of the classical system can be deformed by a quantization parameter $\hbar$ to produce a new (classical) integrable system. The new tori selected by the $\hbar$-equidistance rule represent the spectrum of the quantum system up to $O(\hbar^\infty)$ and are invariant under quantum dynamics in the long-time range $O(\hbar^{-\infty})$. The quantum diffusion over the deformed tori is described. The analytic apparatus uses quantum action-angle coordinates explicitly constructed by an $\hbar$-deformation of the classical action-angles.

Abstract:To a complex symplectic manifold X we associate a canonical quantization algebroid. Our construction is similar to that of Polesello-Schapira's deformation-quantization algebroid, but the deformation parameter is no longer central. If X is compact, the triangulated category of regular holonomic quantization modules is a linear complex Calabi-Yau category of dimension 1 + dim X.

Abstract:In this paper we holographically study the strongly coupled dynamics of the field theory on I-branes (D5 branes intersecting on a line). In this regime, the field theory becomes $(2 + 1)$ dimensional with 16 supercharges. The dual background has an IR singularity. We resolve this singularity by compactifying the theory on a circle, preserving 4 supercharges. We study various aspects: confinement, symmetry breaking, Entanglement Entropy, etc. We also discuss a black membrane solution and make some comments on the string $\sigma$-model on our backgrounds.
