Abstract:Clan concept has been introduced in multiparticle dynamics in order to interpret the wide occurrence of negative binomial (NB) regularity in n-charged particle multiplicity distributions (MDs) in various high energy collisions. The centrality of clan concept led to the attempt to justify its occurrence within a statistical model of clan formation and evolution. In this framework all thermodynamical potentials have been explicitly calculated in terms of NB parameters. Interestingly it was found that NB parameter k corresponds to the one particle canonical partition function. The goal of this paper is to explore a possible temperature and volume dependence of parameter k in various classes of events in high energy hadron-hadron collisions. It is shown that the existence of a phase transition at parton level from the ideal clan gas associated to the semihard component with k>1 to the ideal clan gas of the hard component with k<1 implies a discontinuity in the average number of particles at hadron level.

Abstract:Clan structure analysis in rapidity intervals is generalized from negative binomial multiplicity distribution to the wide class of compound Poisson distributions. The link of generalized clan structure analysis with correlation functions is also established. These theoretical results are then applied to minimum bias events and evidentiate new interesting features, which can be inspiring and useful in order to discuss data on rapidity gap probability at TEVATRON and HERA.

Abstract:The article focuses on study of clan model parameters and their target dependence in light of void probability scaling for heavy (Ag and Br) and light (C, N and O) groups of targets present in nuclear emulsion detector using 84 Kr 36 at around 1 A GeV. The variation of scaled rapidity gap (rap gap) probability with single moment combination has been studied. We found that experimental points are lying approximately on the negative binomial distribution (NBD) curve, indicating a scaling behavior. The average clan multiplicities for interactions, increases with the pseudo-rapidity interval was also observed. The values of average multiplicity for AgBr targets are larger than those for CNO target and also average number of particles per clan increases with increase in pseudo-rapidity interval. We further observed that for a particular target, average number of particles per clan increases with an increase in the size of projectile nucleus.

Abstract:Scenarios for particle production in the GeV and TeV regions are reviewed. The expected increase with c.m. energy of the average number of clans for the soft component and the decrease for the semihard one indicate possible classical and quantum behaviour of gluons, respectively. Clan thermodynamics, discussed in the paper, appears as the natural framework to deal with such phenomena.

Abstract:Experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have measured multiplicity distributions in proton-proton collisions at a new domain of center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt {s}$) in limited pseudorapidity intervals. We analyze multiplicity distribution data of proton-proton collisions at LHC energies as measured by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment in terms of characteristic parameters of the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD) function that has played a significant role in describing multiplicity distribution data of particle production in high energy physics experiments, in the pre-LHC energy-range, in various kinds of collisions for a wide range of collision energy and for different kinematic ranges. Beside a single NBD, we apply the formalism of weighted superposition of two NBDs to examine if the multiplicity distribution data of CMS could be better explained. The weighted superposition of two NBDs indeed explain the distribution data better at the highest available LHC energy and in large interval of phase space. The two-NBD formalism further reveals that the energy invariance of the multiplicity distribution of the "soft" component of particle production in hadronic collisions is valid at LHC also, as it is at RHIC and Tevatron. We analyze the data further in terms of clan parameters in the framework of the two-NBD model.

How to retrieve additional information from the multiplicity distributions

Abstract:Multiplicity distributions $P(N)$ measured in multiparticle production processes are most frequently described by the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD). However, with increasing collision energy some systematic discrepancies become more and more apparent. They are usually attributed to the possible multi-source structure of the production process and described using a multi-NBD form of the multiplicity distribution. We investigate the possibility of keeping a single NBD but with its parameters depending on the multiplicity $N$. This is done by modifying the widely known clan model of particle production leading to the NBD form of $P(N)$. This is then confronted with the approach based on the so-called cascade-stochastic formalism which is based on different types of recurrence relations defining $P(N)$. We demonstrate that a combination of both approaches allows the retrieval of additional valuable information from the multiplicity distributions, namely the oscillatory behavior of the counting statistics apparently visible in the high energy data.

Abstract:Clans are representations of generalized algebraic theories that contain more information than the finite-limit categories associated to the locally finitely presentable categories of models via Gabriel-Ulmer duality. Extending Gabriel-Ulmer duality to account for this additional information, we present a duality theory between clans and locally finitely presentable categories equipped with a weak factorization system of a certain kind.

Global heteroclinic rebel dynamics among large 2-clusters in permutation equivariant systems

Abstract:We explore equivariant dynamics under the symmetric group $S_N$ of all permutations of $N$ elements. Specifically we study one-parameter vector fields, up to cubic order, which commute with the standard real $(N-1)$-dimensional irreducible representation of $S_N$. The parameter is the linearization at the trivial 1-cluster equilibrium of total synchrony. All equilibria are cluster solutions involving up to three clusters. The resulting global dynamics is of gradient type: all bounded solutions are cluster equilibria and heteroclinic orbits between them. In the limit of large $N$, we present a detailed analysis of the web of heteroclinic orbits among the plethora of 2-cluster equilibria. Our focus is on the global dynamics of 3-cluster solutions with one rebel cluster of small size. These solutions describe slow relative growth and decay of 2-cluster states. For $N\rightarrow\infty$, the limiting heteroclinic web defines an integrable \emph{rebel flow} in the space of 2-cluster equilibrium configurations. We identify and study the seven qualitatively distinct global rebel flows which arise in this setting. Applications include oscillators with all-to-all coupling, and electrochemistry. For illustration we consider synchronization clusters among $N$ complex Stuart-Landau oscillators with complex linear global coupling.

Abstract:The formation of clusters in low density matter formed in near Fermi energy heavy ion collisions has been investigated using the NIMROD multi-detector at Texas A&M University. Emphasis is on elucidation of the low density equation of state. Temperature and density dependent symmetry free energies derived from isoscaling analyses of the yields of nuclei with A <= 4 are far above those obtained in common effective interaction calculations, reflecting the cluster formation. A possible extensionof the experimental techniques to investigations of nuclear Bose condensates is also discussed.

Abstract:In ballistic annihilation, infinitely many particles with randomly assigned velocities move across the real line and mutually annihilate upon contact. We introduce a variant with superimposed clusters of multiple stationary particles. Our main result is that the critical initial cluster density to ensure species survival depends on both the mean and variance of the cluster size. Our result contrasts with recent ballistic annihilation universality findings with respect to particle spacings. A corollary of our theorem resolves an open question for coalescing ballistic annihilation.

Abstract:The negative binomial distribution (NBD) has been theorized to express a scale-invariant property of many-body systems and has been consistently shown to outperform other statistical models in both describing the multiplicity of quantum-scale events in particle collision experiments and predicting the prevalence of cosmological observables, such as the number of galaxies in a region of space. Despite its widespread applicability and empirical success in these contexts, a theoretical justification for the NBD from first principles has remained elusive for fifty years. The accuracy of the NBD in modeling hadronic, leptonic, and semileptonic processes is suggestive of a highly general principle, which is yet to be understood. This study demonstrates that a statistical event of the NBD can in fact be derived in a general context via the dynamical equations of a canonical ensemble of particles in Minkowski space. These results describe a fundamental feature of many-body systems that is consistent with data from the ALICE and ATLAS experiments and provides an explanation for the emergence of the NBD in these multiplicity observations. Two methods are used to derive this correspondence: the Feynman path integral and a hypersurface parametrization of a propagating ensemble.

Abstract:The formation, movement and gluing of clusters can be described through a system of non local balance laws. Here, the well posedness of this system is obtained, as well as various stability estimates. Remarkably, qualitative properties of the solutions are proved, providing information on stationary solutions and on the propagation speed. In some cases, fragmentation leads to clusters developing independently. Moreover, these equations may serve as an encryption/decryption tool. This poses new analytical problems and asks for improved numerical methods.

Abstract:The dependence of the average number of partons per clan on virtuality and rapidity variables is analytically predicted in the framework of the Generalized Simplified Parton Shower model, based on the idea that clans are genuine elementary subprocesses. The results obtained are found to be qualitatively consistent with experimental trends. This study extends previous results on the behavior of the average number of clans in virtuality and rapidity and shows how important physical quantities can be calculated analytically in a model based on essentials of QCD allowing local violations of the energy-momentum conservation law, still requiring its global validity.

Emergence of regularity for limit points of McKean-Vlasov particle systems

Abstract:The empirical measure of an interacting particle system is a purely atomic random probability measure. In the limit as the number of particles grows to infinity, we show for McKean-Vlasov systems with common noise that this measure becomes absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure for almost all times, almost surely. The density possesses good regularity properties, and we obtain a moment bound for its (random) fractional Sobolev norm. This result is obtained for dynamics with a bounded drift, bounded and Hölder-continuous diffusion coefficients and when the diffusion coefficient for the idiosyncratic noise is uniformly elliptic. We directly study the sequence of particle systems via approximating their exchangeable dynamics by conditionally independent dynamics at the expense of an error. By using probabilistic means, the approximation and the error are controlled for each particle system, and the results are then passed to the large-system limit. The estimates thus obtained are combined via an analytic interpolation technique to derive a norm bound for the limiting random density. In this way, we obtain a regularity estimate for all cluster points, without requiring any knowledge of the dynamics of the limiting measure-valued flow.

Abstract:This work investigates the phase structure of the non-renormalizable (3+1)-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with particular focus on inhomogeneous phases (IPs), where the chiral condensate is non-uniform in space, and the closely related moat regimes, where mesonic dispersion relations favor non-vanishing momenta. We use the mean-field approximation and consider five different regularization schemes including three lattice discretizations. The results within the different regularization schemes are systematically analyzed in order to study the dependence of the IP on the choice of regulatization scheme and regulator value. The IP exhibits a drastic dependence on the chosen regularization scheme rendering any physical interpretation of results on inhomogeneous phases in this model doubtful. In contrast, we find only a mild scheme dependence of the moat regime suggesting that its existence is a consequence of the action of the NJL model and its symmetries and, thus, that it might also exist in QCD.

Abstract:We present Langevin dynamics simulations that study the collective behavior of driven particles embedded in a densely packed background consisting of passive particles. Depending on the driving force, the densities of driven and passive particles, and the temperature we observe a dynamical phase separation of the driven particles, which cluster together in tight bands. We explore the mechanisms that drive this cluster formation, and determine the critical conditions for such phase separation. A simple physical picture explains the formation and subsequent growth of a jammed zone developing in front of the driven cluster. The model correctly captures the observed scaling with time. We analyze the implications of this clustering transition for the driven transport in dense particulate flows, which due to a non-monotonic dependence on the applied driving force is not straightforwardly optimized. We provide proof-of-concept for a direct application of the clustering effect, and propose a 'colloidal chromatograph'; a setup that permits the separation of colloids by mass or size.

On some integrable models in inhomogeneous space

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to build a framework that allows for an in-depth study of various generalisations to inhomogeneous space of models of Borodin-Ferrari, Dieker-Warren, Nordenstam, Warren-Windridge of interacting particles in interlacing arrays, both in discrete and continuous time, involving both Bernoulli and geometric jumps. The models can in addition be either time-inhomogeneous or particle-inhomogeneous. We show that the correlation functions of these models are determinantal and using this we prove a short-time asymptotic for these dynamics to the discrete Bessel point process. We moreover prove a number of closely related results. We prove that the autonomous, inhomogeneous in space and time, TASEP-like and pushTASEP-like particle systems on the edges of the array have explicit transition kernels and that from any deterministic initial condition their distributions are marginals of a determinantal measure. We prove a novel duality relation between dynamics in inhomogeneous space and dynamics with inhomogeneities on the level of the array. We extend the work of Nordenstam on the shuffling algorithm for domino tilings of the Aztec diamond and its relation to push-block dynamics in interlacing arrays to general weights on the tilings and then connect this, for a special class of weights, back to our previous results. We also consider non-intersecting walks in inhomogeneous space and time with fixed starting and end points and obtain a formula for their correlation functions, involving among other ingredients, an explicit Riemann-Hilbert problem. We then prove a limit theorem for the bottom lines in this line-ensemble, under some technical conditions. The main computational tool throughout this work is a natural generalisation of a Toeplitz matrix, that we call inhomogeneous Toeplitz-like matrix $\mathsf{T}_{\mathbf{f}}$ with (a possibly matrix-valued) symbol $\mathbf{f}$.
