Abstract:The negative binomial distribution (NBD) has been theorized to express a scale-invariant property of many-body systems and has been consistently shown to outperform other statistical models in both describing the multiplicity of quantum-scale events in particle collision experiments and predicting the prevalence of cosmological observables, such as the number of galaxies in a region of space. Despite its widespread applicability and empirical success in these contexts, a theoretical justification for the NBD from first principles has remained elusive for fifty years. The accuracy of the NBD in modeling hadronic, leptonic, and semileptonic processes is suggestive of a highly general principle, which is yet to be understood. This study demonstrates that a statistical event of the NBD can in fact be derived in a general context via the dynamical equations of a canonical ensemble of particles in Minkowski space. These results describe a fundamental feature of many-body systems that is consistent with data from the ALICE and ATLAS experiments and provides an explanation for the emergence of the NBD in these multiplicity observations. Two methods are used to derive this correspondence: the Feynman path integral and a hypersurface parametrization of a propagating ensemble.

Abstract:Multiparticle production in (2+1) dimensions is investigated. We show that in a small region around the threshold the perturbation theory becomes unapplicable due to infrared divergencies in a class of Feynman graphs with rescattering in final state. We develop a technique based on renormalization group for summing up leading logarithms and apply it to the $\phi^4$ models with and without symmetry breaking and to the $O(N)$ $\phi^4$ theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce new reference observables to establish a scaling formula in the renormalization group equation. Using the transfer matrix method, we calculate the two point observables of the one dimensional Ising model without an external field under general boundary conditions. The results indicate that the two point observables exhibit exponential decay as the distance between these two sites tends to infinity, except at the critical point. Corresponding to the renormalization procedure underlying the correlation function, we establish a similar procedure for new observables, which aligning with findings in physics. Additionally, from the dynamic point of view, we construct a random system using the stochastic quantization method. We calculate the new observables of this random system under the initial distribution that satisfies Dobrushin Lanford Ruelle(DLR) equations. Furthermore, we formulate a new renormalization scaling equation with respect to the two point observables. Finally, these results can be extended to a more general case of finite point observables, and demonstrating independence from the choice of system parameters.

Abstract:Through introducing a notion of renormalization of particle-number density, a simple perturbation scheme of nonequilibrium quantum-field theory is proposed. In terms of the renormalized particle-distribution functions, which characterize the system, the structure of the scheme (and then also the structure of amplitudes and reaction rates) are the same as in the equilibrium thermal field theory. Then, as an obvious consequence, the amplitudes and reaction rates computed in this scheme are free from pinch singularities due to multiple products of $\delta$-functions, which inevitably present in traditional perturbation scheme.

Abstract:Some probability distributions have moments, and some do not. For example, the normal distribution has power moments of arbitrary order, but the Cauchy distribution does not have power moments. In this paper, by analogy with the renormalization method in quantum field theory, we suggest a renormalization scheme to remove the divergence in divergent moments. We establish more than one renormalization procedure to renormalize the same moment to prove that the renormalized moment is scheme-independent. The power moment is usually a positive-integer-power moment; in this paper, we introduce nonpositive-integer-power moments by a similar treatment of renormalization. An approach to calculating logarithmic moment from power moment is proposed, which can serve as a verification of the validity of the renormalization procedure. The renormalization schemes proposed are the zeta function scheme, the subtraction scheme, the weighted moment scheme, the cut-off scheme, the characteristic function scheme, the Mellin transformation scheme, and the power-logarithmic moment scheme. The probability distributions considered are the Cauchy distribution, the Levy distribution, the q-exponential distribution, the q-Gaussian distribution, the normal distribution, the Student's t-distribution, and the Laplace distribution.

Abstract:We survey the recent progress made in understanding non equilibrium dynamics in closed random systems. The emphasis is on the important role played by concepts from quantum information theory and on the application of systematic renormalization group methods to capture universal aspects of the dynamics. Abstract:The field theoretic renormalization group is applied to Kraichnan's model of a passive scalar quantity advected by the Gaussian velocity field with the pair correlation function $\propto\delta(t-t')/k^{d+\epsilon}$. Inertial-range anomalous scaling for the structure functions and various pair correlators is established as a consequence of the existence in the corresponding operator product expansions of ``dangerous'' composite operators (powers of the local dissipation rate), whose {\it negative} critical dimensions determine anomalous exponents. The latter are calculated to order $\epsilon^3$ of the $\epsilon$ expansion (three-loop approximation).
Perturbative dynamic renormalization of scalar field theories in statistical physics

Abstract:Renormalization is a powerful technique in statistical physics to extract the large-scale behavior of interacting many-body models. These notes aim to give an introduction to perturbative methods that operate on the level of the stochastic evolution equation for a scalar field (e.g., density), including systems that are driven away from equilibrium and thus lack a free energy. While there is a large number of reviews and lecture notes, many are somewhat scarce on technical details and written in the language of quantum field theory, which can be more confusing than helpful. Here we attempt a minimal and concise yet pedagogical introduction to dynamic renormalization in the language of statistical physics with a strong focus on how to actually perform calculations. We provide a symbolic algebra implementation of the discussed techniques including Jupyter notebooks of two illustrations: the KPZ equation and a neural network model.

Random Walk on a Rough Surface: Renormalization Group Analysis of a Simple Model

Abstract:The field theoretic renormalization group is applied to a simple model of random walk on a rough fluctuating surface. We consider the Fokker--Planck equation for a particle in a uniform gravitational field. The surface is modelled by the generalized Edwards--Wilkinson linear stochastic equation for the height field. The full stochastic model is reformulated as a multiplicatively renormalizable field theory, which allows for application of the standard renormalization theory. The renormalization group equations have several fixed points that correspond to possible scaling regimes in the infrared range (long times, large distances); all the critical dimensions are found exactly. As an example, the spreading law for particle's cloud is derived. It has the form $R^2(t)\simeq t^{2/\Delta_{\omega}}$ with the exactly known critical dimension of frequency $\Delta_{\omega}$ and, in general, differs from the standard expression $R^2(t)\simeq t$ for ordinary random walk.

Abstract:Definition of Feynman integrals as solutions of some well defined systems of differential equations is proposed. This definition is equivalent to usual one but needs no regularization and application of $R$-operation. It is argued that proposed renormalization scheme maintains all symmetries that can be maintained in perturbative quantum field theory, and also is convenient for practical calculations.

Abstract:The anomalous dimension for heavy-heavy-light effective theory operators describing nuclear beta decay is computed through three-loop order in the static limit. The result at order Z2α3 corrects a previous result in the literature. An all-orders symmetry is shown to relate the anomalous dimensions at leading and subleading powers of Z at a given order of α . Abstract:The problem of infinities (divergent integrals) appearing in quantum field theory or elementary particle physics are treated by renormalization in the current theories. By this perturbative tool the desired finite quantities are produced by differences of infinities. This paper gives a new non-perturbative approach to this problem. Namely, the Hilbert space on which the quantum Hamilton operator $H$ is acting, is decomposed into subspaces, called Zeeman zones, which are invariant under the actions both of $H$ and the natural complex Heisenberg group representation. Thus well defined particle theory and zonal geometry can be developed on each zone separately. One of the most surprising result is that the quantities which appear as infinities on the global setting become well defined finite ones on the zonal setting. For instance, both the Wiener-Kac and the Dirac-Feynman kernels become of the trace class on the zones, both defining the corresponding zonal measures on the path-spaces rigorously. The Hamilton operators, $H$, considered in this paper are those corresponding to electrons orbiting in a constant magnetic field. This is one of the most important Hamiltonians, introduced for explaining the Zeeman effect. This Hamiltonian is identified with the Laplacian of certain Riemannian,so called Zeeman manifolds. The spectral Zeeman zone decomposition is introduced, by one of the definitions, by the spectrum of the angular momentum operator. Thus a zone exhibits the magnetic state of the particle occupying the zone. All the important spectral theoretical objects are explicitly established. They include the spectrum, the zonal projection operators, the zonal Wiener-Kac and Dirac-Feynman kernels, and the zonal partition functions.

Abstract:Multiplicity distributions $P(N)$ measured in multiparticle production processes are most frequently described by the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD). However, with increasing collision energy some systematic discrepancies become more and more apparent. They are usually attributed to the possible multi-source structure of the production process and described using a multi-NBD form of the multiplicity distribution. We investigate the possibility of keeping a single NBD but with its parameters depending on the multiplicity $N$. This is done by modifying the widely known clan model of particle production leading to the NBD form of $P(N)$. This is then confronted with the approach based on the so-called cascade-stochastic formalism which is based on different types of recurrence relations defining $P(N)$. We demonstrate that a combination of both approaches allows the retrieval of additional valuable information from the multiplicity distributions, namely the oscillatory behavior of the counting statistics apparently visible in the high energy data.

Abstract:Perturbative renormalization provides the bedrock of understanding quantum field theories. In this work, I point out an alternative way of renormalizing quantum field theories, which is naturally encountered and well-known for the case of large N scalar field theories. In terms of bare parameters, this nonperturbative alternative renormalization differs qualitatively from its perturbative cousin: in the continuum limit, the bare coupling constant goes to zero instead of infinity, and there is no wave-function counterterm. Despite these differences, the resulting n -point functions of the theory are finite.
