Abstract:We obtain quenched hitting distributions to be compound Poissonian for a certain class of random dynamical systems. The theory is general and designed to accommodate non-uniformly expanding behavior and targets that do not overlap much with the region where uniformity breaks. Based on annealed and quenched polynomial decay of correlations, our quenched result adopts annealed Kac-type time-normalization and finds limits to be noise-independent. The technique involves a probabilistic blockapproximation where the quenched hit-counting function up to annealed Kac-normalized time is split into equally sized blocks which are mimicked by an independency of random variables distributed just like each of them. The theory is made operational due to a result that allows certain hitting quantities to be recovered from return quantities. Our application is to a class of random piecewise expanding one-dimensional systems, casting new light on the well-known deterministic dichotomy between periodic and aperiodic points, their usual extremal index formula EI=1-1/JT^p(x_0) , and recovering the PolyaAeppli case for general Bernoulli-driven systems, but distinct behavior otherwise. Future and on-going investigations aim to produce and accommodate examples of bonafide nonuniformly expanding random systems and targets approaching their neutral points.

Solitary waves and $N$-particle algorithms for a class of Euler-Poincaré equations

Abstract:We study a class of partial differential equations (PDEs) in the family of the so-called Euler-Poincaré differential systems, with the aim of developing a foundation for numerical algorithms of their solutions. This requires particular attention to the mathematical properties of this system when the associated class of elliptic operators possesses non-smooth kernels. By casting the system in its Lagrangian (or characteristics) form, we first formulate a particles system algorithm in free space with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions for the evolving fields. We next examine the deformation of the system when non-homogeneous "constant stream" boundary conditions are assumed. We show how this simple change at the boundary deeply affects the nature of the evolution, from hyperbolic-like to dispersive with a non-trivial dispersion relation, and examine the potentially regularizing properties of singular kernels offered by this deformation. From the particle algorithm viewpoint, kernel singularities affect the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the corresponding ordinary differential equations systems. We illustrate this with the case when the operator kernel assumes a conical shape over the spatial variables, and examine in detail two-particle dynamics under the resulting lack of Lipschitz-continuity. Curiously, we find that for the conically-shaped kernels the motion of the related two-dimensional waves can become completely integrable under appropriate initial data. This reduction projects the two-dimensional system to the one-dimensional completely integrable Shallow-Water equation [Camassa, R. and Holm, D. D., Phys. Rev. Lett., 71, 1961-1964, 1993], while retaining the full dependence on two spatial dimensions for the single channel solutions.

Abstract:Liquid crystals establish a nearly unique combination of thermodynamic, hydrodynamic, and topological behavior. This poses a challenge to their theoretical understanding and modeling. The arena where these effects come together is the mesoscopic (micron) scale. It is then important to develop models aimed at capturing this variety of dynamics. We have generalized the particle-based multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD) method to model the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals. Following the Qian-Sheng theory [Phys. Rev. E 58, 7475 (1998)1063-651X10.1103/PhysRevE.58.7475] of nematics, the spatial and temporal variations of the nematic director field and order parameter are described by a tensor order parameter. The key idea is to assign tensorial degrees of freedom to each MPCD particle, whose mesoscopic average is the tensor order parameter. This nematic MPCD method includes backflow effect, velocity-orientation coupling, and thermal fluctuations. We validate the applicability of this method by testing (i) the nematic-isotropic phase transition, (ii) the flow alignment of the director in shear and Poiseuille flows, and (iii) the annihilation dynamics of a pair of line defects. We find excellent agreement with existing literature. We also investigate the flow field around a force dipole in a nematic liquid crystal, which represents the leading-order flow field around a force-free microswimmer. The anisotropy of the medium not only affects the magnitude of velocity field around the force dipole, but can also induce hydrodynamic torques depending on the orientation of dipole axis relative to director field. A force dipole experiences a hydrodynamic torque when the dipole axis is tilted with respect to the far-field director. The direction of hydrodynamic torque is such that the pusher- (or puller-) type force dipole tends to orient along (or perpendicular to) the director field. Our nematic MPCD method can have far-reaching implications not only in modeling of nematic flows, but also to study the motion of colloids and microswimmers immersed in an anisotropic medium.

Abstract:We study the generalization of the dispersionless Kadomtsev - Petviashvili (dKP) equation in n+1 dimensions and with nonlinearity of degree m+1, a model equation describing the propagation of weakly nonlinear, quasi one dimensional waves in the absence of dispersion and dissipation, and arising in several physical contexts, like acoustics, plasma physics, hydrodynamics and nonlinear optics. In 2+1 dimensions and with quadratic nonlinearity, this equation is integrable through a novel IST, and it has been recently shown to be a prototype model equation in the description of the two dimensional wave breaking of localized initial data. In higher dimensions and with higher nonlinearity, the generalized dKP equations are not integrable, but their invariance under motions on the paraboloid allows one to construct in this paper a family of exact solutions describing waves constant on their paraboloidal wave front and breaking simultaneously in all points of it, developing after breaking either multivaluedness or single valued discontinuous shocks. Then such exact solutions are used to build the longtime behavior of the solutions of the Cauchy problem, for small and localized initial data, showing that wave breaking of small initial data takes place in the longtime regime if and only if $m(n-1)\le 2$. At last, the analytic aspects of such a wave breaking are investigated in detail in terms of the small initial data, in both cases in which the solution becomes multivalued after breaking or it develops a discontinuous shock. These results, contained in the 2012 master thesis of one of the authors (FS), generalize those obtained by one of the authors (PMS) and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://S.V.Manakov" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> for the dKP equation in n+1 dimensions with quadratic nonlinearity, and are obtained following the same strategy.

Abstract:We complete the kinetic theory of inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions initiated in previous works. We use a simpler and more physical formalism. We consider a system of particles submitted to a small external stochastic perturbation and determine the response of the system to the perturbation. We derive the diffusion tensor and the friction by polarization of a test particle. We introduce a general Fokker-Planck equation involving a diffusion term and a friction term. When the friction by polarization can be neglected, we obtain a secular dressed diffusion (SDD) equation sourced by the external noise. When the external perturbation is created by a discrete collection of $N$ field particles, we obtain the inhomogeneous Lenard-Balescu kinetic equation reducing to the inhomogeneous Landau kinetic equation when collective effects are neglected. We consider a multi-species system of particles. When the field particles are at statistical equilibrium (thermal bath), we establish the proper expression of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for systems with long-range interactions relating the power spectrum of the fluctuations to the response function of the system. In that case, the friction and diffusion coefficients satisfy the Einstein relation and the Fokker-Planck equation reduces to the inhomogeneous Kramers equation. We also consider a gas of Brownian particles with long-range interactions described by $N$ coupled stochastic Langevin equations and determine its mean and mesoscopic evolution. We discuss the notion of stochastic kinetic equations and the role of fluctuations possibly triggering random transitions from one equilibrium state to the other. Our presentation parallels the one given for two-dimensional point vortices in a previous paper [P.H. Chavanis, Eur. Phys. J. Plus 138, 136 (2023)].

A meshless stochastic method for Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations

Abstract:A plethora of biological, physical, and chemical phenomena involve transport of charged particles (ions). Its continuum-scale description relies on the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) system, which encapsulates the conservation of mass and charge. The numerical solution of these coupled partial differential equations is challenging and suffers from both the curse of dimensionality and difficulty in efficiently parallelizing. We present a novel particle-based framework to solve the full PNP system by simulating a drift-diffusion process with time- and space-varying drift. We leverage Green's functions, kernel-independent fast multipole methods, and kernel density estimation to solve the PNP system in a meshless manner, capable of handling discontinuous initial states. The method is embarrassingly parallel, and the computational cost scales linearly with the number of particles and dimension. We use a series of numerical experiments to demonstrate both the method's convergence with respect to the number of particles and computational cost vis-à-vis a traditional partial differential equation solver.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:Nonlinear science is a key area of scientific research dedicated to studying the fundamental properties and common features of nonlinear phenomena. This study specifically investigates the (2+1)-dimensional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (KP-BBM) equation in nonlinear dispersive systems. By employing the Hirota bilinear method along with the linear superposition principle to the bilinear form of this equation, various new wave structures are effectively derived, such as N-solitons, resonance-type solitons, hybrid interaction solutions, and resonant multi-wave solutions. To ensure the physical compatibility of the results, we generated 3D and density plots using appropriate parametric values, which will provide effective insights into the obtained wave solutions. Moreover, we provide a modulation instability analysis of the KP-BBM equation with its stability region. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that the results discussed are new and have not been previously explored for the given equation. Additionally, the methods applied are efficient and reliable for constructing new soliton wave solutions in nonlinear physical phenomena. We predict that the findings of this study will have significant applications in optical fibers, plasma physics, engineering and fluid dynamics.

Abstract:Over the last three decades a large number of experimental studies on several quasi one-dimensional (1D) metals and quasi1D Mott-Hubbard insulators have produced evidence for distinct spectral features identified with charge-only and spin-only fractionalized particles. They can be also observed in ultra-cold atomic 1D optical lattices a nd quantum wires. 1D exactly solvable models provide nontrivial tests of the approaches for these systems relying on field theories. Different schemes such as the pseudofermion dynamical theory (PDT) and the mobile quantum impurity model (MQIM) have revealed that the 1D correlated models high-energy physics is qualitatively different from that of a low-energy Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). This includes the momentum dependence of the exponents that control the one- and two-particle dynamical correlation functions near their spectra edges and in the vicinity of one-particle singular spectral features. On the one hand, the low-energy charge-only and spin-only fractionalized particles are usually identified with holons and spinons, respectively. On the other hand, `particle-like' representations in terms of {\it pseudoparticles}, related PDT {\it pseudofermions}, and MQIM particles are suitable for the description of both the low-energy TLL physics and high-energy spectral and dynamical properties of 1D correlated systems. The main goal of this review is to revisit the usefulness of pseudoparticle and PDT pseudofermion representations for the study of both static and high-energy spectral and dynamical properties of the 1D Lieb-Liniger Bose gas, spin-$1/2$ isotropic Heisenberg chain, and 1D Hubbard model. Moreover, the relation between the PDT and the MQIM is clarified.

Abstract:A system of $N$ spin-1/2 particles interacting with a thermal reservoir is used as a pedagogical example for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. We introduce and illustrate some methods, approximations, and phenomena related to dissipation and nonlinearity in many-particle physics. We start our analysis from the dynamical Sudarshan-Lindblad quantum master equation for the density operator of a system $\mathcal{S}$ interacting with a thermal reservoir $\mathcal{R}$. We derive the quantum version of the so-called Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) equations such that the master equation can be decomposed in a hierarchical set of $N-1$ equations ($N>1$). The hierarchy is broken by introducing the mean-field approximation and reducing the problem to a nonlinear single particle system. In this scenario, the Hamiltonian is nonlinear (i.e., it depends on the state of $\mathcal{S}$), although the superoperator responsible for the dissipation and decoherence of $\mathcal{S}$ remains unaffected. To provide a useful tool to students: (1) we discuss the physical approximations involved, (2) we derive the analytical solution to the mean values equations of motion resulting from the Hamiltonian, (3) we solve analytically the master equation in the stationary regime, (4) we obtain and discuss the solution of the nonlinear master equation, numerically, and finally, (5) we discuss the master equation beyond the mean-field approximation and show how to introduce higher order quantum correlations that have been previously neglected.

Abstract:The integrability of (2+1)-dimensional non-autonomous perturbed potential Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (NpPKP) problem has been demonstrated in this manuscript using Lax pairs and the Bäcklund transformation. The bilinear form of the NpPKP problem has been generated with the help of Hirota polynomial technique. Using test function and N -dimensional Riemann theta function, the kink-like breathers, lump-kink, interaction of lump and shock and the kinky quasiperiodic are explored analytically in light of the vector selections in the solution space. Outcomes of the solutions are plotted as illustration using particular values of the relevant parameters. These findings may aid in our understanding of intriguing physical events and mechanisms in potential systems.

Mitigating Density Fluctuations in Particle-based Active Nematic Simulations

Abstract:Understanding active matter has led to new perspectives on biophysics and non-equilibrium dynamics. However, the development of numerical tools for simulating active fluids capable of incorporating non-trivial boundaries or inclusions has lagged behind. Active particle-based methods, which typically excel at this, suffer from large density fluctuations that affect the dynamics of inclusions. To this end, we advance the Active-Nematic Multi-Particle Collision Dynamics algorithm, a particle-based method for simulating active nematics, by addressing the large density fluctuations that arise from activity. This paper introduces three novel activity formulations that mitigate the coupling between activity and local density. Local density fluctuations are decreased to a level comparable to the passive limit while retaining the phenomenology of active nematics and increasing the active turbulence regime four-fold. These developments extend the technique into a flexible tool for modeling active systems, including solutes and inclusions, with broad applications for the study of biophysical systems.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NSE) with an additional high-order Hamiltonian perturbation that displays a nonlinear interaction between Langmuir waves and electrons in plasmas is studied. It is shown that periodic solutions, solitary waves, and recurrence exist, which are also inherent in the cubic NSE. A more important phenomenon, stochasticity, has been found in such a continuum Hamiltonian dynamic system. This phenomenon illustrates that nonintegrability arises from the high-order Hamiltonian perturbation. In addition, our numerical results also show that recurrence, which sensitively depends on initial conditions, is only a special feature of the dynamic system.

Abstract:We explain the general theories involved in solving an infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equation (ISDE) for interacting Brownian motions in infinite dimensions related to random matrices. Typical examples are the stochastic dynamics of infinite particle systems with logarithmic interaction potentials such as the sine, Airy, Bessel, and also for the Ginibre interacting Brownian motions. The first three are infinite-dimensional stochastic dynamics in one-dimensional space related to random matrices called Gaussian ensembles. They are the stationary distributions of interacting Brownian motions and given by the limit point processes of the distributions of eigenvalues of these random matrices. The sine, Airy, and Bessel point processes and interacting Brownian motions are thought to be geometrically and dynamically universal as the limits of bulk, soft edge, and hard edge scaling. The Ginibre point process is a rotation- and translation-invariant point process on R 2 \mathbb {R}^2 , and an equilibrium state of the Ginibre interacting Brownian motions. It is the bulk limit of the distributions of eigenvalues of non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices. When the interacting Brownian motions constitute a one-dimensional system interacting with each other through the logarithmic potential with inverse temperature β = 2 \beta = 2 , an algebraic construction is known in which the stochastic dynamics are defined by the space-time correlation function. The approach based on the stochastic analysis (called the analytic approach) can be applied to an extremely wide class. If we apply the analytic approach to this system, we see that these two constructions give the same stochastic dynamics. From the algebraic construction, despite being an infinite interacting particle system, it is possible to represent and calculate various quantities such as moments by the correlation functions. We can thus obtain quantitative information. From the analytic construction, it is possible to represent the dynamics as a solution of an ISDE. We can obtain qualitative information such as semi-martingale properties, continuity, and non-collision properties of each particle, and the strong Markov property of the infinite particle system as a whole. Ginibre interacting Brownian motions constitute a two-dimensional infinite particle system related to non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices. It has a logarithmic interaction potential with β = 2 \beta = 2 , but no algebraic configurations are known.The present result is the only construction.

Abstract:Nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs) have a wide range of applications in various fields, including physics, engineering, biology, economics, and more. These equations are used to describe complex systems that change over time, where the state or behavior of the system not only depends on the current situation, but may also be related to the past. A deep understanding of the solutions to NLEEs is of great significance for predicting and controlling the behavior of complex systems. The (3 + 1)-dimensional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Boussinesq-like (KPB-like) equation represents a partial differential equation that describes nonlinear wave phenomena in multi-dimensional spaces. This model is commonly employed in fields such as fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and nonlinear optics to study wave behaviors. This paper investigates the KPB-like equations, which have meaningful physical implications in describing nonlinear wave phenomena. Hirota bilinear method is employed to derive the bilinear form for the KPB-like equation and 1-soliton, 2-soliton, lump, and travelling wave solutions are studied to this kind of nonlinear model. In addition, the chaotic behaviors of soliton and lump solutions are explored via applying the Duffing chaotic system. To have a better understanding of dynamic structures, 3D, line, density and contour map plots of begotten results are displayed. Our results indicate the directness and effectiveness of the applied method for analyzing high-dimensional differential equations that arise in nonlinear science.
