Abstract:Highly concentrated patterns have been observed in a spatially heterogeneous, nonlocal, kinetic model with BGK type operators implementing a velocity-jump process for cell migration, directed by the nonlocal sensing of either an external signal or the cell population density itself. We describe, in an asymptotic regime, the precise profile of these concentrations which, at the macroscale, are Dirac masses. Because Dirac concentrations look like Gaussian potentials, we use the Hopf–Cole transform to calculate the potential adapted to the problem. This potential, as in other similar situations, is obtained through the viscosity solutions of a Hamilton–Jacobi equation. We begin with the linear case, when the heterogeneous external signal is given, and we show that the concentration profile obtained after the diffusion approximation is not correct and is a simple eikonal approximation of the true H–J equation. Its heterogeneous nature leads us to develop a new analysis of the implicit equation defining the Hamiltonian and a new condition to circumvent the 'dimensionality problem'. In the nonlinear case, when the signal occurs from the cell density itself, it is shown that the already observed linear instability (pattern formation) occurs when the Hamiltonian is convex-concave, a striking new feature of our approach.

Abstract:We propose a numerical approach, of the BGK kinetic type, that is able to approximate with a given, but arbitrary, order of accuracy the solution of linear and non-linear convection-diffusion type problems: scalar advection-diffusion, non-linear scalar problems of this type and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our kinetic model can use \emph{finite} advection speeds that are independent of the relaxation parameter, and the time step does not suffer from a parabolic constraint. Having finite speeds is in contrast with many of the previous works about this kind of approach, and we explain why this is possible: paraphrasing more or less \cite{golse:hal-00859451}, the convection-diffusion like PDE is not a limit of the BGK equation, but a correction of the same PDE without the parabolic term at the second order in the relaxation parameter that is interpreted as Knudsen number. We then show that introducing a matrix collision instead of the well-known BGK relaxation makes it possible to target a desired convection-diffusion system. Several numerical examples, ranging from a simple pure diffusion model to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations illustrate our approach

Abstract:We develop a systematic and efficient approach for numerically solving the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation for an open quantum system that can be strongly coupled to an environment. As an important application, we consider a real-time simulation of a spin-boson model in a strong-coupling regime that is difficult to deal with using conventional methods. We show that the non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equation can be efficiently implemented as a real-time simulation for this model, so as to give an accurate description of spin-boson dynamics beyond the rotating-wave approximation.

Abstract:We extend to multi-dimensions the work of [1], where new fully explicit kinetic methods were built for the approximation of linear and non-linear convection-diffusion problems. The fundamental principles from the earlier work are retained: (1) rather than aiming for the desired equations in the strict limit of a vanishing relaxation parameter, as is commonly done in the diffusion limit of kinetic methods, diffusion terms are sought as a first-order correction of this limit in a Chapman-Enskog expansion, (2) introducing a coupling between the conserved variables within the relaxation process by a specifically designed collision matrix makes it possible to systematically match a desired diffusion. Extending this strategy to multi-dimensions cannot, however, be achieved through simple directional splitting, as diffusion is likely to couple space directions with each other, such as with shear viscosity in the Navier-Stokes equations. In this work, we show how rewriting the collision matrix in terms of moments can address this issue, regardless of the number of kinetic waves, while ensuring conservation systematically. This rewriting allows for introducing a new class of kinetic models called \emph{regularized} models, simplifying the numerical methods and establishing connections with Jin-Xin models. Subsequently, new explicit arbitrary high-order kinetic schemes are formulated and validated on standard two-dimensional cases from the literature. Excellent results are obtained in the simulation of a shock-boundary layer interaction, validating their ability to approximate the Navier-Stokes equations with kinetic speeds obeying nothing but a subcharacteristic condition along with a hyperbolic constraint on the time step.

Abstract:Vlasov kinetic theory is the dynamics of a bunch of particles flowing according to symplectic Hamiltonian dynamics. More recently, this geometry has been extended to contact Hamiltonian dynamics. In this paper, we introduce geometric kinetic theories within the framework of cosymplectic and cocontact manifolds to extend the present literature to time-dependent dynamics. The cosymplectic and the cocontact kinetic theories are obtained in terms of both momentum variables and density functions. These alternative realizations are linked via Poisson/momentum maps. Furthermore, in cocontact geometry, we introduce a hierarchical analysis of nine distinct dynamical motions as various manifestations of Hamiltonian, evolution, and gradient flows.

Abstract:We study a system of two continuity equations with nonlocal velocity fields using interaction potentials of both attractive and repulsive Morse type. Such a system is of interest in many contexts in multi-population modelling. We prove existence, uniqueness and stability in the 2-Wasserstein spaces of probability measures via Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme and gradient flow solutions in the spirit of the Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré theory. We then formulate a deterministic particle scheme for this model and prove that gradient flow solutions are obtained in the many particle limit by discrete densities constructed out of moving particles satisfying a suitable system of ODEs. The ODE system is formulated in a non standard way in order to bypass the Lipschitz singularity of the kernel, with difference quotients of the kernel replacing its derivative.

Kinetic equations for systems with long-range interactions: a unified description

Abstract:We complete the existing literature on the kinetic theory of systems with long-range interactions. Starting from the BBGKY hierarchy, or using projection operator technics or a quasilinear theory, a general kinetic equation can be derived when collective effects are neglected. This equation (which is not well-known) applies to possibly spatially inhomogeneous systems, which is specific to systems with long-range interactions. Interestingly, the structure of this kinetic equation bears a clear physical meaning in terms of generalized Kubo relations. Furthermore, this equation takes a very similar form for stellar systems and two-dimensional point vortices providing therefore a unified description of the kinetic theory of these systems. If we assume that the system is spatially homogeneous (or axisymmetric for point vortices), this equation can be simplified and reduces to the Landau equation (or its counterpart for point vortices). Our formalism thus offers a simple derivation of Landau-type equations. We also use this general formalism to derive a kinetic equation, written in angle-action variables, describing spatially inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions. This new derivation solves the shortcomings of our previous derivation [P.H. Chavanis, Physica A 377, 469 (2007)]. Finally, we consider a test particle approach and derive general expressions for the diffusion and friction (or drift) coefficients of a test particle evolving in a bath of field particles. We make contact with the expressions previously obtained in the literature. As an application of the kinetic theory, we argue that the relaxation time is shorter for inhomogeneous (or high-dimensional) systems than for homogeneous (or low-dimensional) systems because there are potentially more resonances.

Engineering many-body quantum Hamiltonians with non-ergodic properties using quantum Monte Carlo

Abstract:We present a computational framework to identify Hamiltonians of interacting quantum many-body systems that host non-ergodic excited states. We combine quantum Monte Carlo simulations with the recently proposed eigenstate-to-Hamiltonian construction, which maps the ground state of a specified parent Hamiltonian to a single non-ergodic excited state of a new derived Hamiltonian. This engineered Hamiltonian contains non-trivial, systematically-obtained, and emergent features that are responsible for its non-ergodic properties. We demonstrate this approach by applying it to quantum many-body scar states where we discover a previously unreported family of Hamiltonians with spatially oscillating spin exchange couplings that host scar-like properties, including revivals in the quantum dynamics, and towers in the inverse participation ratio; and to many-body localization, where we find a two-dimensional Hamiltonian with correlated disorder that exhibits non-ergodic scaling of the participation entropy and inverse participation ratios of order unity. The method can be applied to other known ground states to discover new quantum many-body systems with non-ergodic excited states.

Abstract:In this article, we consider nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi Equations on networks with Kirchhoff type conditions for the interior vertices and Dirichlet boundary conditions for the boundary ones: our aim is to provide general existence and comparison results in the case when the integro-differential operators are of order strictly less than 1. The main originality of these results is to allow these nonlocal terms to have contributions on several different edges of the network. The existence of Lipschitz continuous solutions is proved in two ways: either by using the vanishing viscosity method or by the usual Perron's method. The comparison proof relies on arguments introduced by Lions and Souganidis. We also introduce a notion of flux-limited solution, nonlocal analog to the one introduced by Imbert and Monneau, and prove that the solutions of the Kirchhoff problem are flux-limited solutions for a suitable flux-limiter. After treating in details the case when we only have one interior vertex, we extend our approach to treat general networks.

Galerkin method for nonlocal diffusion equations on self-similar domains

Abstract:Integro-differential equations, analyzed in this work, comprise an important class of models of continuum media with nonlocal interactions. Examples include peridynamics, population and opinion dynamics, the spread of disease models, and nonlocal diffusion, to name a few. They also arise naturally as a continuum limit of interacting dynamical systems on networks. Many real-world networks, including neuronal, epidemiological, and information networks, exhibit self-similarity, which translates into self-similarity of the spatial domain of the continuum limit. For a class of evolution equations with nonlocal interactions on self-similar domains, we construct a discontinuous Galerkin method and develop a framework for studying its convergence. Specifically, for the model at hand, we identify a natural scale of function spaces, which respects self-similarity of the spatial domain, and estimate the rate of convergence under minimal assumptions on the regularity of the interaction kernel. The analytical results are illustrated by numerical experiments on a model problem.

Abstract:A Hamiltonian in two space dimensions whose kinetic-energy contributions have opposite signs is studied in detail. Solutions of the time-independent Schrödinger equation for fixed energy are superpositions of plane waves, with wavevectors on hyperbolas rather than circles. The local velocity (e.g. in the Madelung representation) is proportional to the kinetic momentum, i.e. local particle velocity, not the more familiar canonical momentum (phase gradient). The patterns of the associated streamlines are different, especially near phase singularities and phase saddles where the kinetic and canonical streamline patterns have opposite indices. Contrasting with the superficially analogous circular smooth solutions of kinetically isotropic Hamiltonians are wave modes that are anisotropic in position and also discontinuous. Pictures illustrating these phenomena are included. The occurrence of familiar concepts in unfamiliar guises could be useful for teaching quantum or wave physics at graduate level.

Kinetic-type Mean Field Games with Non-separable Local Hamiltonians

Abstract:We prove well-posedness of a class of kinetic-type Mean Field Games, which typically arise when agents control their acceleration. Such systems include independent variables representing the spatial position as well as velocity. We consider non-separable Hamiltonians without any structural conditions, which depend locally on the density variable. Our analysis is based on two main ingredients: an energy method for the forward-backward system in Sobolev spaces, on the one hand and on a suitable vector field method to control derivatives with respect to the velocity variable, on the other hand. The careful combination of these two techniques reveals interesting phenomena applicable for Mean Field Games involving general classes of drift-diffusion operators and nonlinearities. While many prior existence theories for general Mean Field Games systems take the final datum function to be smoothing, we can allow this function to be non-smoothing, i.e. also depending locally on the final measure. Our well-posedness results hold under an appropriate smallness condition, assumed jointly on the data.

Abstract:We consider a Hamiltonian system of particles, interacting through of a smooth pair potential. We look at the system on a space scale of order {\epsilon}^1, times of order {\epsilon}^2, and mean velocities of order {\epsilon}, with {\epsilon} a scale parameter, under initial conditions where the system is in a local Gibbs state with parameters corresponding to density and temperature with gradients of order 1. Assuming that the phase space density of the particles is given by a suitable series in {\epsilon} the behavior of the system under this rescaling is described, to the lowest order in {\epsilon}, by new non-classical hydrodynamic equations that cannot be derived from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the small Mac number limit. The analogous equations in kinetic theory are called ghost effect equations.

Existence and local asymptotics for a system of cross-diffusion equations with nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard terms

Abstract:We study a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard model for a multicomponent mixture with cross-diffusion effects and degenerate mobility. The nonlocality is described by means of a symmetric singular kernel. We define a notion of weak solution adapted to possible degeneracies and prove, as our first main result, its global-in-time existence. The proof relies on an application of the formal gradient flow structure of the system (to overcome the lack of a-priori estimates), combined with an extension of the boundedness-by-entropy method, in turn involving a careful analysis of an auxiliary variational problem. This allows to obtain solutions to an approximate, time-discrete system. Letting the time step size go to zero, we recover the desired nonlocal weak solution where, due to their low regularity, the Cahn-Hilliard terms require a special treatment. Finally, we prove convergence of solutions for this class of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations to their local counterparts.

Exploring the Dynamics of Nonlocal Nonlinear Waves: Analytical Insights into the Extended Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Model

Abstract:The study of nonlocal nonlinear systems and their dynamics is a rapidly increasing field of research. In this study, we take a closer look at the extended nonlocal Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (enKP) model through a systematic analysis of explicit solutions. Using a superposed bilinearization approach, we obtained a bilinear form of the enKP equation and constructed soliton solutions. Our findings show that the nature of the resulting nonlinear waves, including the amplitude, width, localization, and velocity, can be controlled by arbitrary solution parameters. The solutions exhibited both symmetric and asymmetric characteristics, including localized bell-type bright solitons, superposed kink-bell-type and antikink-bell-type soliton profiles. The solitons arising in this nonlocal model only undergo elastic interactions while maintaining their initial identities and shifting phases. Additionally, we demonstrated the possibility of generating bound-soliton molecules and breathers with appropriately chosen soliton parameters. The results of this study offer valuable insights into the dynamics of localized nonlinear waves in higher-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear models.

Local Hamiltonian dynamics from non-local action principles and applications to binary systems in general relativity

Abstract:We consider a class of finite-dimensional dynamical systems whose equations of motion are derived from a non-local-in-time action principle. The action functional has a zeroth order piece derived from a local Hamiltonian and a perturbation in the form of a non-local functional of the trajectory on phase space. We prove that the dynamics of these systems admits a local Hamiltonian description to all order in the perturbation and we provide explicit formulae for the $\mathcal{N}^{\text{th}}$ order Hamiltonian and symplectic form in terms of the $(\mathcal{N}-1)^{\text{th}}$ order Hamiltonian flow. In the context of general relativity, these systems arise in the study of binary systems such as pairs of black holes or neutron stars in the small mass-ratio and post-Newtonian approximations. We provide applications of the formalism to binary systems in these regimes.

Abstract:Fractional kinetic theory plays a vital role in describing anomalous diffusion in terms of complex dynamics generating semi-Markovian processes. Recently, the variational principle and associated Levy Ansatz have been proposed in order to obtain an analytic solution of the fractional Fokker-Planck equation. Here, based on the action integral introduced in the variational principle, the Hamiltonian formulation is developed for the fractional Fokker-Planck equation. It is shown by the use of Dirac's generalized canonical formalism how the equation can be recast in the Liouville-like form. A specific problem arising from temporal nonlocality of fractional kinetics is nonuniqueness of the Hamiltonian: it has two different forms. The non-equal-time Dirac-bracket relations are set up , and then it is proven that both of the Hamiltonians generate the identical time evolution.

Kinetic theory of inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions and fluctuation-dissipation theorem

Abstract:We complete the kinetic theory of inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions initiated in previous works. We use a simpler and more physical formalism. We consider a system of particles submitted to a small external stochastic perturbation and determine the response of the system to the perturbation. We derive the diffusion tensor and the friction by polarization of a test particle. We introduce a general Fokker-Planck equation involving a diffusion term and a friction term. When the friction by polarization can be neglected, we obtain a secular dressed diffusion (SDD) equation sourced by the external noise. When the external perturbation is created by a discrete collection of $N$ field particles, we obtain the inhomogeneous Lenard-Balescu kinetic equation reducing to the inhomogeneous Landau kinetic equation when collective effects are neglected. We consider a multi-species system of particles. When the field particles are at statistical equilibrium (thermal bath), we establish the proper expression of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for systems with long-range interactions relating the power spectrum of the fluctuations to the response function of the system. In that case, the friction and diffusion coefficients satisfy the Einstein relation and the Fokker-Planck equation reduces to the inhomogeneous Kramers equation. We also consider a gas of Brownian particles with long-range interactions described by $N$ coupled stochastic Langevin equations and determine its mean and mesoscopic evolution. We discuss the notion of stochastic kinetic equations and the role of fluctuations possibly triggering random transitions from one equilibrium state to the other. Our presentation parallels the one given for two-dimensional point vortices in a previous paper [P.H. Chavanis, Eur. Phys. J. Plus 138, 136 (2023)].

Abstract:In this paper, we consider Klein-Gordon equations with cubic nonlinearity in three spatial dimensions, which are Hamiltonian perturbations of the linear one with potential. It is assumed that the corresponding Klein-Gordon operator B = √(-Δ + V(x) + m^2) admits an arbitrary number of possibly degenerate eigenvalues in (0, m), and hence the unperturbed linear equation has multiple time-periodic solutions known as bound states. In , Soffer and Weinstein discovered a mechanism called Fermi's Golden Rule for this nonlinear system in the case of one simple but relatively large eigenvalue Ω∈ (m/3, m), by which energy is transferred from discrete to continuum modes and the solution still decays in time. In particular, the exact energy transfer rate is given. In , we solved the general one simple eigenvalue case. In this paper, we solve this problem in full generality: multiple and simple or degenerate eigenvalues in (0, m). The proof is based on a kind of pseudo-one-dimensional cancellation structure in each eigenspace, a renormalized damping mechanism, and an enhanced damping effect. It also relies on a refined Birkhoff normal form transformation and an accurate generalized Fermi's Golden Rule over those of Bambusi–Cuccagna .
