Abstract:We investigate whether non-metrizable manifolds in various classes can be homotopy equivalent to a CW-complex (in short: heCWc), and in particular contractible. We show that a non-metrizable manifold cannot be heCWc if it has one of the following properties: it contains a countably compact non-compact subspace; it contains a copy of an $\omega_1$-compact subset of an $\omega_1$-tree; it contains a non-Lindelöf closed subspace functionally narrow in it. (These results hold for more general spaces than just manifolds.) We also show that the positive part of the tangent bundle of the long ray is not heCWc (for any smoothing). These theorems follow from stabilization properties of real valued maps. On a more geometric side, we also show that the Prüfer surface, which has been shown to be contractible long ago, has an open submanifold which is not heCWc. On the other end of the spectrum, we show that there is a non-metrizable contractible Type I surface.

Abstract:We prove a finiteness result for the $\partial$-patterned guts decomposition of all 3-manifolds obtained by splitting a given orientable, irreducible and $\partial$-irreducible 3-manifold along a closed incompressible surface. Then using the Thurston norm, we deduce that the JSJ-pieces of all 3-manifolds dominated by a given compact 3-manifold belong, up to homeomorphism, to a finite collection of compact 3-manifolds. We show also that any closed orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many integral homology spheres and any compact 3-manifolds orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many exterior of knots in $S^3$.
Large magnetoresistance at room-temperature in small molecular weight organic semiconductor sandwich devices

Abstract:We present an extensive study of a large, room temperature negative magnetoresistance (MR) effect in tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum sandwich devices in weak magnetic fields. The effect is similar to that previously discovered in polymer devices. We characterize this effect and discuss its dependence on field direction, voltage, temperature, film thickness, and electrode materials. The MR effect reaches almost 10% at fields of approximately 10 mT at room temperature. The effect shows only a weak temperature dependence and is independent of the sign and direction of the magnetic field. Measuring the devices' current-voltage characteristics, we find that the current depends on the voltage through a power-law. We find that the magnetic field changes the prefactor of the power-law, whereas the exponent remains unaffected. We also studied the effect of the magnetic field on the electroluminescence (MEL) of the devices and analyze the relationship between MR and MEL. We find that the largest part of MEL is simply a consequence of a change in device current caused by the MR effect.

Abstract:By analogy with associative and co-associative cases we introduce a class of three-dimensional non-orientable submanifolds, of almost $\mathrm{G}_2-$manifolds, modelled on planes lying in a special $\mathrm{G}_2-$orbit. An application of the Cartan-K\"ahler theory shows that some three-manifold can be presented in this way. We also classify all the homogeneous ones in $\mathbb{RP}^7$.

Abstract:We prove that an open manifold $M$ of dimension at least $5$ which admits a complete CAT(0) polyhedral metric is pseudo-collarable, its fundamental group at infinity is strongly perfectly semistable and has vanishing Chapman-Siebenmann obstruction $\tau_{\infty}(M)$. Moreover, this implies that $M$ is topologically collapsible, when $n\geq 6$. Conversely, any finite dimensional collapsible polyhedron is PL homeomorphic to a CAT(0) cubical complex.

Abstract:This article contains a proof of the fact that, under certain mild technical conditions, the action of the automorphism group of a cyclic 3-manifold cover of the type SxR, where S is a compact surface, yields a compact quotient. This result is then immediately applied to extend a theorem on the fiberings over the circle of certain compact 3-manifolds which are torus sums. As a corollary, I prove the validity of the conditional main theorem in my article titled "A fibering theorem for 3-manifolds", which appeared in the Journal of Groups, Complexity, Cryptology in 2021 and its subsequent erratum. This paper also furnishes a proof of the irreducibility of the summands of compact 3-manifolds which are torus sums and irreducible, and a proof of the interesting observation that a compact connected orientable 3-manifold whose fundamental group contains a subnormal subgroup of infinite index is the connected sum of an irreducible compact 3-manifold with (finitely many) 3-balls.

Abstract:A 3-manifold M is said to have Property C if the degrees of finite coverings over M are determined by the manifolds. Thurston asked the following questions: is there a real-valued invariant of 3-manifolds with a certain covering property, and which 3-manifolds have Property C? For geometric manifolds the conjecture is that M has Property C if and only if it is not covered by (surface) x S-1 or a torus bundle over S-1. With the aid of the Gromov norm, the conjecture is quickly reduced to the case of graph manifolds.In this paper we define a new invariant omega(M) for graph manifolds. It has the covering property that if N is a d-fold covering space of M, then omega(N) = d omega(M). Thus in the generic case, when omega(M) not equal 0, the manifold M has Property C. We also use the methods to prove two other results. The first classifies all geometric manifolds that admit non-trivial self-coverings. The second solves a problem of Gonzales-Acuna and Whitten about the cohopficity of 3-manifold groups, and determines all closed geometric manifolds that have cohopfian fundamental groups.

Abstract:Given a branched cover of manifolds, one can lift homeomorphisms along the cover to obtain a (virtual) homomorphism between mapping class groups. Following a question of Margalit-Winarski, we study the injectivity of this lifting map in the case of $3$-manifolds. We show that in contrast to the case of surfaces, the lifting map is generally not injective for most regular branched covers of $3$-manifolds. This includes the double cover of $S^3$ branched over the unlink, which generalizes the hyperelliptic branched cover of $S^2$. In this case, we find a finite normal generating set for the kernel of the lifting map.

Abstract:We show that the hyperbolic structure on a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold can be constructed from a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations using any triangulation with essential edges. The key ingredients in the proof are Thurston's spinning construction and a volume rigidity result attributed by Dunfield to Thurston, Gromov and Goldman. As an application, we show that this gives a new algorithm to detect hyperbolic structures on closed 3-manifolds.

Abstract:. W.Thurston raised the following question in 1976: Suppose that a compact 3-manifold M is not covered by (surface) × S^1 or a torus bundle over S^1 . If M_1 and M_2 are two homeomorphic finite covering spaces of M , do they have the same covering degree?¶For so called geometric 3-manifolds (a famous conjecture is that all compact orientable 3-manifolds are geometric), it is known that the answer is affirmative if M is not a non-trivial graph manifold.¶In this paper, we prove that the answer for non-trivial graph manifolds is also affirmative. Hence the answer for the Thurston's question is complete for geometric 3-manifolds. Some properties of 3-manifold groups are also derived.

This demonstrates that the constructions of alternate genus two Heegaard splittings of closed orientable 3-manifolds described by Rubinstein and Scharlemann in their 1998 paper Genus Two Heegaard Splittings of Orientable 3-Manifolds, does not yield all alternate genus two splittings and must be augmented.

Abstract:An open book decomposition of a 3-manifold $M$ induces a Heegaard splitting for $M$, and the minimal genus among all Heegaard splittings induced by open book decompositions is called the \emph{open book genus} of $M$. It is conjectured by Ozbagci \cite{O} that the open book genus is additive under the connected sum of 3-manifolds. In this paper, we prove that a non-prime 3-manifold which has open book genus 2 is homeomorphic to $L(p,1)\#L(q,1)$ for some integers $p,q\neq\pm1$, that is, it has non-trivial prime pieces of open book genus 1. In particular, there cannot be a counter-example to additivity of the open book genus such that the connected sum has open book genus 2.

Abstract:Let $M=S^n/ \Gamma$ and $h \in \pi_1(M)$ be a non-trivial element of finite order $p$, where the integers $n, p\geq2$ and $\Gamma$ is a finite abelian group which acts on the sphere freely and isometrically, therefore $M$ is diffeomorphic to a compact space form which is typical a non-simply connected manifold. We prove there exist at least two non-contractible closed geodesics on $\mathbb{R}P^2$ and obtain the upper bounds on their lengths. Moreover, we prove there exist at least $n$ prime non-contractible simple closed geodesics on $(M,F)$ of prescribed class $[h]$, provided \[ F^2 <(\frac{\lambda+1}{\lambda})^2 g_0 \;\; \text{ and } \;\; (\frac{\lambda}{\lambda+1})^2 < K \leq 1 \text{ for $n$ is odd or }\; 0<K \leq 1 \text{ for $n$ is even}, \] where $\lambda$ is the reversibility, $K$ is the flag curvature and $g_0$ is standard Riemannian metric. Stability of these non-contractible closed geodesics is also studied.

Abstract:We consider the problem of realizing tight contact structures on closed orientable three-manifolds. By applying the theorems of Hofer et al., one may deduce tightness from dynamical properties of (Reeb) flows transverse to the contact structure. We detail how two classical constructions, Dehn surgery and branched covering, may be performed on dynamically-constrained links in such a way as to preserve a transverse tight contact structure.
