Abstract:We prove a finiteness result for the $\partial$-patterned guts decomposition of all 3-manifolds obtained by splitting a given orientable, irreducible and $\partial$-irreducible 3-manifold along a closed incompressible surface. Then using the Thurston norm, we deduce that the JSJ-pieces of all 3-manifolds dominated by a given compact 3-manifold belong, up to homeomorphism, to a finite collection of compact 3-manifolds. We show also that any closed orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many integral homology spheres and any compact 3-manifolds orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many exterior of knots in $S^3$.

Abstract:We describe an example of a closed orientable 3-manifold with distinct distance three genus two Heegaard splittings. This demonstrates that the constructions of alternate genus two Heegaard splittings of closed orientable 3-manifolds described by Rubinstein and Scharlemann in their 1998 paper Genus Two Heegaard Splittings of Orientable 3-Manifolds, does not yield all alternate genus two splittings and must be augmented.

Abstract:We classify $SU(2)$-cyclic and $SU(2)$-abelian 3-manifolds, for which every representation of the fundamental group into $SU(2)$ has cyclic or abelian image respectively, among geometric 3-manifolds which are not hyperbolic. As an application, we give examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which do not admit degree-1 maps to any Seifert fibered manifold other than $S^3$ or a lens space. We also produce infinitely many one-cusped hyperbolic manifolds with at least four $SU(2)$-cyclic Dehn fillings, one more than the number of cyclic fillings allowed by the cyclic surgery theorem.

Abstract:We produce examples of pairwise non-diffeomorphic closed irreducible 4-manifolds with non-trivial free abelian fundamental group of rank less than three and small Euler characteristic. These exotic smooth structures become standard after taking a connected sum with a single copy of $S^2\times S^2$. The contributions of this paper include an explicit mechanism to computate the equivariant intersection form of 4-manifolds that are obtained via torus surgeries and a new stabilization result concerning exotic smooth structures with arbitrary fundamental group.

Abstract:An open book decomposition of a 3-manifold $M$ induces a Heegaard splitting for $M$, and the minimal genus among all Heegaard splittings induced by open book decompositions is called the \emph{open book genus} of $M$. It is conjectured by Ozbagci \cite{O} that the open book genus is additive under the connected sum of 3-manifolds. In this paper, we prove that a non-prime 3-manifold which has open book genus 2 is homeomorphic to $L(p,1)\#L(q,1)$ for some integers $p,q\neq\pm1$, that is, it has non-trivial prime pieces of open book genus 1. In particular, there cannot be a counter-example to additivity of the open book genus such that the connected sum has open book genus 2.

Abstract:We use contact fiber sums of open book decompositions to define an infinite hierarchy of filling obstructions for contact 3-manifolds, called planar k-torsion for nonnegative integers k, all of which cause the contact invariant in Embedded Contact Homology to vanish. Planar 0-torsion is equivalent to overtwistedness, while every contact manifold with Giroux torsion also has planar 1-torsion, and we give examples of contact manifolds that have planar k-torsion for any $k \ge 2$ but no Giroux torsion, leading to many new examples of nonfillable contact manifolds. We show also that the complement of the binding of a supporting open book never has planar torsion. The technical basis of these results is an existence and uniqueness theorem for J-holomorphic curves with positive ends approaching the (possibly blown up) binding of an ensemble of open book decompositions.

One consequence of Thurston's geometrization conjecture is that the universal covering space $\widetilde{M}$ of $M$ must be \homeo\ to $\RRR$. Abstract:We extend basic results in $3$-manifold topology to general three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces (or Alexandrov $3$-spaces for short), providing a unified framework for manifold and non-manifold spaces. We generalize the connected sum to non-manifold $3$-spaces and prove a prime decomposition theorem, exhibit an infinite family of closed, prime non-manifold $3$-spaces which are not irreducible, and establish a conjecture of Mitsuishi and Yamaguchi on the structure of closed, simply-connected Alexandrov $3$-spaces with non-negative curvature. Additionally, we define a notion of generalized Dehn surgery for Alexandrov $3$-spaces and show that any closed Alexandrov $3$-space may be obtained by performing generalized Dehn surgery on a link in $S^3$ or the non-trivial $S^2$-bundle over $S^1$. As an application of this result, we show that every closed Alexandrov $3$-space is homeomorphic to the boundary of a $4$-dimensional Alexandrov space.

Abstract:We describe probably the simplest 3-manifold which contains closed separating incompressible surfaces of arbitrarily large genus. Two applications of this observation are given. (1) For any closed, orientable 3-manifold M and any integer m > 0, a, surgery on a link in M of at most 2m + 1 components will provide a closed, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold containing m disjoint, non-parallel, separating, incompressible surfaces of arbitrarily high genus. (2) There exists a 3-manifold M containing separating imcompressible surfaces S-n of genus g(S-n) arbitrarily large, such that the amalgamation of minimal Heegaard splittings of two resulting 3-manifolds cutting along S-n can be stabilized g(S-n) - 3 times to a minimal Heegaard splitting of M.

Abstract:Murphy and the second author showed that a generic closed Riemannian manifold has no totally geodesic submanifolds, provided it is at least four dimensional. Lytchak and Petrunin established the same thing in dimension 3. For the higher dimensional result, the generic set is open and dense in the $C^{q}$--topology for any $% q\geq 2.$ In Lytchak and Petrunin's work, the generic set is a dense $G_{\delta }$ in the $C^{q}$-topology for any $q\geq 2.$ Here we show that the set of such metrics on a compact $3$-manifold contains a set that is open and dense in the $C^{q}$-topology for any $q\geq 3.$

Complete 3-manifolds of positive scalar curvature with quadratic decay

Abstract:We prove that if an orientable 3-manifold $M$ admits a complete Riemannian metric whose scalar curvature is positive and has a subquadratic decay at infinity, then it decomposes as a (possibly infinite) connected sum of spherical manifolds and $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ summands. This generalises a theorem of Gromov and Wang by using a different, more topological, approach. As a result, the manifold $M$ carries a complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature, which partially answers a conjecture of Gromov. More generally, the topological decomposition holds without any scalar curvature assumption under a weaker condition on the filling discs of closed curves in the universal cover based on the notion of fill radius. Moreover, the decay rate of the scalar curvature is optimal in this decomposition theorem. Indeed, the manifold $\mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ supports a complete metric of positive scalar curvature with exactly quadratic decay, but does not admit a decomposition as a connected sum.

Abstract:Surgery triangles are an important computational tool in Floer homology. Given a connected oriented surface $\Sigma$, we consider the abelian group $K(\Sigma)$ generated by bordered 3-manifolds with boundary $\Sigma$, modulo the relation that the three manifolds involved in any surgery triangle sum to zero. We show that $K(\Sigma)$ is a finitely generated free abelian group and compute its rank. We also construct an explicit basis and show that it generates all bordered 3-manifolds in a certain stronger sense. Our basis is strictly contained in another finite generating set which was constructed previously by Baldwin and Bloom. As a byproduct we confirm a conjecture of Blokhuis and Brouwer on spanning sets for the binary symplectic dual polar space.

Boundaries of open symplectic manifolds and the failure of packing stability

Abstract:A finite volume symplectic manifold is said to have "packing stability" if the only obstruction to symplectically embedding sufficiently small balls is the volume obstruction. Packing stability has been shown in a variety of cases and it has been conjectured that it always holds. We give counterexamples to this conjecture; in fact, we give examples that cannot be fully packed by any domain with smooth boundary nor by any convex domain. The examples are symplectomorphic to open and bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^4$, with the diffeomorphism type of a disc. The obstruction to packing stability is closely tied to another old question, which asks to what extent an open symplectic manifold has a well-defined boundary; it follows from our results that many examples cannot be symplectomorphic to the interior of a compact symplectic manifold with smooth boundary. Our results can be quantified in terms of the volume decay near the boundary, and we produce, for example, smooth toric domains that are only symplectomorphic to the interior of a compact domain if the boundary of this domain has inner Minkowski dimension arbitrarily close to $4$. The growth rate of the subleading asymptotics of the ECH spectrum plays a key role in our arguments. We prove a very general "fractal Weyl law", relating this growth rate to the Minkowski dimension; this formula is potentially of independent interest.
