Abstract:We show that if (B,\pi) is an open book decomposition of a contact 3-manifold (Y,\xi), then the complement of the binding B has no Giroux torsion. We also prove the sutured Heegaard-Floer c-bar invariant of the binding of an open book is non-zero.

Abstract:We use contact fiber sums of open book decompositions to define an infinite hierarchy of filling obstructions for contact 3-manifolds, called planar k-torsion for nonnegative integers k, all of which cause the contact invariant in Embedded Contact Homology to vanish. Planar 0-torsion is equivalent to overtwistedness, while every contact manifold with Giroux torsion also has planar 1-torsion, and we give examples of contact manifolds that have planar k-torsion for any $k \ge 2$ but no Giroux torsion, leading to many new examples of nonfillable contact manifolds. We show also that the complement of the binding of a supporting open book never has planar torsion. The technical basis of these results is an existence and uniqueness theorem for J-holomorphic curves with positive ends approaching the (possibly blown up) binding of an ensemble of open book decompositions.

Heegaard splittings and the tight Giroux Correspondence

Abstract:This paper presents a new proof of the Giroux Correspondence for tight contact $3$-manifolds using techniques from Heegaard splittings and convex surface theory. We introduce tight Heegaard splittings, which generalise the Heegaard splittings naturally induced by an open book decomposition of a contact manifold. Via a process called refinement, any tight Heegaard splitting determines an open book, up to positive open book stabilisation. This allows us to translate moves relating distinct tight Heegaard splittings into moves relating their associated open books. We use these tools to show that every Heegaard splitting of a contact 3-manifold may be stabilised to a splitting associated to a supporting open book decomposition. Finally, we prove the tight Giroux Correspondence, showing that any pair of open book decompositions compatible with isotopic contact structures become isotopic after a sequence of positive open book stabilisations.

Abstract:In the present paper we describe compatible open books for the fibre connected sum along binding components of open books, as well as for the fibre connected sum along multi-sections of open books. As an application the first description provides simple ways of constructing open books supporting all tight contact structures on $T^3$, recovering a result by van Horn-Morris, as well as an open book supporting the result of a Lutz twist along a binding component of an open book, recovering a result by Ozbagci--Pamuk.

Abstract:Consider a transverse knot which is the binding of an open book for the ambient contact manifold. In this paper, we show that the transverse invariants defined by Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz, and Szabo (LOSS) are nonvanishing for such transverse knots. This is true regardless of whether or not the ambient contact structure is tight. We also prove a vanishing theorem for LOSS's Legendrian and transverse invariants. As a corollary, we show that if (T,\pi) is an open book with connected binding, then the complement of T has no Giroux torsion.

Abstract:We use the theory of sutured TQFT to classify contact elements in the sutured Floer homology, with $\Z$ coefficients, of certain sutured manifolds of the form $(\Sigma \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ where $\Sigma$ is an annulus or punctured torus. Using this classification, we give a new proof that the contact invariant in sutured Floer homology with $\Z$ coefficients of a contact structure with Giroux torsion vanishes. We also give a new proof of Massot's theorem that the contact invariant vanishes for a contact structure on $(\Sigma \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ described by an isolating dividing set.

Abstract:Abstract A real 3-manifold is a smooth 3-manifold together with an orientation preserving smooth involution, called a real structure. In this article we study open book decompositions on smooth real 3-manifolds that are compatible with the real structure.We call them real open book decompositions.We show that each real open book carries a real contact structure and two real contact structures supported by the same real open book decomposition are equivariantly isotopic. We also show that every real contact structure on a closed 3-dimensional real manifold is supported by a real open book. Finally, we conjecture that two real open books on a real contact manifold supporting the same real contact structure are related by positive real stabilizations and equivariant isotopy, and that the Giroux correspondence applies to real manifolds as well, namely that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the real contact structures on a real 3-manifold up to equivariant contact isotopy and the real open books up to positive real stabilization. Meanwhile, we study some examples of real open books and real Heegaard decompositions in lens spaces.

Abstract:We describe explicit horizontal open books on some Seifert fibered 3--manifolds. We show that the contact structures compatible with these horizontal open books are Stein fillable and horizontal as well. Moreover we draw surgery diagrams for some of these contact structures.

Abstract:We study Kirby problems 1.92(E)-(G), which, roughly speaking, ask for which compact oriented $3$-manifold $M$ the Kauffman bracket skein module $\mathcal{S}(M)$ has torsion as a $\mathbb{Z}[A^{\pm 1}]$-module. We give new criteria for the presence of torsion in terms of how large the $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-character variety of $M$ is. This gives many counterexamples to question 1.92(G)-(i) in Kirby's list. For manifolds with incompressible tori, we give new effective criteria for the presence of torsion, revisiting the work of Przytycki and Veve. We also show that $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R P}^3# L(p,1))$ has torsion when $p$ is even. Finally, we show that for $M$ an oriented Seifert manifold, closed or with boundary, $\mathcal{S}(M)$ has torsion if and only if $M$ admits a $2$-sided non-boundary parallel essential surface.

Abstract:We give an elementary topological obstruction for a manifold M of dimension 2q+1⩾7 to admit a contact open book with flexible Weinstein pages and c1(π2(M))=0 : if the torsion subgroup of the q ‐th integral homology group is non‐zero, then no such contact open book exists. We achieve this by proving that a symplectomorphism of a flexible Weinstein manifold acts trivially on integral cohomology. We also produce examples of non‐trivial loops of flexible contact structures using related ideas.

Super-representations of 3-manifolds and torsion polynomials

Abstract:Torsion polynomials connect the genus of a hyperbolic knot (a topological invariant) with the discrete faithful representation (a geometric invariant). Using a new combinatorial structure of an ideal triangulation of a 3-manifold that involves edges as well as faces, we associate a polynomial to a cusped hyperbolic manifold that conjecturally agrees with the $\BC^2$-torsion polynomial, which conjecturally detects the genus of the knot. The new combinatorics is motivated by super-geometry in dimension 3, and more precisely by super-Ptolemy assignments of ideally triangulated 3-manifolds and their $\mathrm{OSp}_{2|1}(\BC)$-representations. Extended section 4, and added superalgebras with a single odd generator.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a nested open book, a submanifold equipped with an open book structure compatible with an ambient open book, and describe in detail the special case of a push-off of the binding of an open book. This enables us to explicitly describe a natural open book decomposition of a fibre connected sum of two open books along their bindings, provided they are diffeomorphic and admit an open book structure themselves. Furthermore, we apply the results to contact open books, showing that the natural open book structure of a contact fibre connected sum of two adapted open books along their contactomorphic bindings is again adapted to the resulting contact structure.

Abstract:In this short note we construct examples of open books for 3-manifolds that show that arbitrarily high twisting of the monodromy of the open book does not guarantee maximality of the Euler characteristic of the pages among the open books supporting the same contact manifold. We find our examples of open books as the double branched covers of families of closed braids studied by Malyutin and Netsvetaev.

Abstract:Using square bridge position, Akbulut-Ozbagci and later Arikan gave algorithms both of which construct an explicit compatible open book decomposition on a closed contact $3$-manifold which results from a contact $(\pm 1)$-surgery on a Legendrian link in the standard contact $3$-sphere. In this article, we introduce the ``generalized square bridge position'' for a Legendrian link in the standard contact $5$-sphere and partially generalize this result to the dimension five via an algorithm which constructs relative open book decompositions on relative contact pairs.

Abstract:We describe explicit open books on arbitrary plumbings of oriented circle bundles over closed oriented surfaces. We show that, for a non-positive plumbing, the open book we construct is horizontal and the corresponding compatible contact structure is also horizontal and Stein fillable. In particular, on some Seifert fibered 3-manifolds we describe open books which are horizontal with respect to their plumbing description. As another application we describe horizontal open books isomorphic to Milnor open books for some complex surface singularities. Moreover we give examples of tight contact 3-manifolds supported by planar open books. As a consequence, the Weinstein conjecture holds for these tight contact structures [1].

Abstract:For an oriented $3$-manifold $M$, let $\mathcal{S}(M)$ denote its Kauffman bracket skein module over $\mathbb{Z}[q^{\pm\frac{1}{2}}]$. It is shown that $\mathcal{S}(M)$ admits infinitely many torsion elements when $M$ is the exterior of the Montesinos knot $K(a_1/b_1,a_2/b_2,a_3/b_4,a_4/b_4)\subset S^3$ with each $b_i\ge 3$. This provides a negative answer to Problem 1.92 (G)-(i) in the Kirby's list, which asks whether $\mathcal{S}(M)$ is free when $M$ is irreducible and has no incompressible non-boundary parallel torus.

Submersion constructions for geometries with parallel skew torsion

Abstract:In the absence of a de Rham decomposition theorem for geometries with torsion, we develop and unify ways to view a geometry with parallel skew torsion as the total space of a locally defined, not necessarily unique Riemannian submersion with totally geodesic fibers. We complete and extend the Cleyton-Swann classification of irreducible such geometries and characterize the cases where the stabilizer of the torsion is larger than the holonomy. As a byproduct, we obtain structure results on Gray manifolds, nearly parallel G$_2$-manifolds and Sasaki manifolds with reducible holonomy.

Abstract:A Calabi-Yau 4-fold of Camere-Garbagnati-Mongardi is a crepant resolution of the quotient of a hyperkähler 4-fold by an antisymplectic involution. In this paper, we compare two different types of holomorphic torsion invariants; one is the BCOV invariant of the Calabi-Yau 4-fold of Camere-Garbagnati-Mongardi, and the other is the invariant of the corresponding $K3^{[2]}$-type manifold with involution introduced by the author in the preceding papers. As an application, in some special cases, we show that the BCOV invariant of those Calabi-Yau 4-folds is expressed as the Petersson norm of a certain Borcherds product.

Spinal open books and symplectic fillings with exotic fibers

Abstract:Spinal open book decompositions provide a natural generalization of open book decompositions. We show that any minimal symplectic filling of a contact 3-manifold supported by a planar spinal open book is deformation equivalent to the complement of a positive multisection in a bordered Lefschetz fibration, which generalizes a result of Wendl. Along the way, we give an explicit local model for a non-compactly supported singularity in a generalized version of bordered Lefschetz fibrations, given by pseudoholomorphic foliations associated to the spinal open books. This provides new tools to classify symplectic fillings of a contact 3-manifold that is not supported by an amenable spinal open book, by studying monodromy factorizations in the newly defined spinal mapping class group. As an application, we complete the classification of strong fillings of all parabolic torus bundles, and make progress towards classifying symplectic fillings of contact 3-manifolds supported by non-planar open books.
