Abstract:Abstract In this editorial we introduce a new non-profit open access journal, Imaging Neuroscience. In April 2023, editors of the journals NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports resigned, and a month later launched Imaging Neuroscience. NeuroImage had long been the leading journal in the field of neuroimaging. While the move to fully open access in 2020 represented a positive step toward modern academic practices, the publication fee was set to a level that the editors found unethical and unsustainable. The publisher of NeuroImage, Elsevier, was unwilling to reduce the fee after much discussion. This led us to launch Imaging Neuroscience with MIT Press, intended to replace NeuroImage as our field’s leading journal, but with greater control by the neuroimaging academic community over publication fees and adoption of modern and ethical publishing practices.

Abstract:Despite the growing momentum to infuse neuroscience into counseling, neuroscience-related publications are relatively scant in flagship counseling journals. In response, this January 2017 edition of the Journal of Mental Health Counseling introduces a new section entitled “Neurocounseling” that will remedy this gap in the literature. This article provides a rationale for the creation of the Neurocounseling section that includes a discussion of current trends in research initiatives, the evolution of the term neurocounseling, and the existing neuroscience-related publications in flagship counseling journals. Additionally, this article outlines the vision for the Neurocounseling section that will aid readers as they conceptualize and conduct neurocounseling research as well as prepare manuscripts for publication.

Abstract:Computational neuroscience continues to be a broad and dynamic discipline that transforms itself as new experimental methods make the collection of new, often multi-modal data types possible. Initially, the focus was on models of single neurons, their ion channels, the statistics of their spikes, and their processing of inputs. New multiunit recording techniques that were possible first in vitro and then gradually in vivo allowed the field to expand into the question of how populations of neurons form circuits that represent sensory stimuli or motor output. Addressing these questions revealed many mathematically and conceptually challenging directions, such as low-dimensional manifolds, their synthesis, and representational meaning. Questions about neural synchrony, phase locking, neural attractors, and their relation to learning, memory, and sleep entered the stage. In the next decades, increased automatization of connectomics studies in organisms such as flies and mice allowed the correlation of the observed activity with the probing of the underlying connectivity. Therefore, neural activity could now, for the first time, be combined with the circuit structure that generated it, enabling detailed insights into the role of cell types in generating specific aspects of neural population activity. New machine-learning methods now enable tracking and segmenting behavior into smaller units while recording neural activity. These methods are complemented by advances in cell profiling and detailed molecular characterization of neural activity and structure, such as quantitative bridges between molecules and behavior, which can be unraveled for the first time. This is an exciting time to be a computational neuroscientist for multiple reasons. First, emerging datasets that cover multiple neural and behavioral levels are emerging and demand new computational approaches. Artificial neural networks can now enable online behavioral segmentation across species and behavioral tasks, but identifying the equivalent of a "grammar" that tells how to use a specific neural activity pattern in a specific region toward the construction of a behavioral trajectory in space is still a challenge. Also, at the level of cellular and molecular mechanisms, new proteomics and connectomics data sets allow unprecedented insights into the learning mechanisms at the single synapse or dendritic branch level, but translating these insights into learning rules in artificial neural networks or revealing their functional correlates in brain circuits remains a fundamental challenge. In this issue, computational neuroscientists, whose diverse expertise ranges from molecular interactions to behavioral characterization, share their perspectives on our current knowledge and future challenges and highlight recent breakthroughs. These reviews can be seen as covering five broad areas: 1) machine learning for neuroscience; 2) neurosciences for machine learning; 3) neural computation; 4) computational models; and 5) data analysis methods. Below, we try to map the different contributions to these categories, although several of the reviews fit in more than one.

An analysis of the abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the Society for Neuroscience from 2001 to 2006

Abstract:We extracted and processed abstract data from the SFN annual meeting abstracts during the period 2001-2006, using techniques and software from natural language processing, database management, and data visualization and analysis. An important first step in the process was the application of data cleaning and disambiguation methods to construct a unified database, since the data were too noisy to be of full utility in the raw form initially available. The resulting co-author graph in 2006, for example, had 39,645 nodes (with an estimated 6% error rate in our disambiguation of similar author names) and 13,979 abstracts, with an average of 1.5 abstracts per author, 4.3 authors per abstract, and 5.96 collaborators per author (including all authors on shared abstracts). Recent work in related areas has focused on reputational indices such as highly cited papers or scientists and journal impact factors, and to a lesser extent on creating visual maps of the knowledge space. In contrast, there has been relatively less work on the demographics and community structure, the dynamics of the field over time to examine major research trends and the structure of the sources of research funding. In this paper we examined each of these areas in order to gain an objective overview of contemporary neuroscience. Some interesting findings include a high geographical concentration of neuroscience research in north eastern United States, a surprisingly large transient population (60% of the authors appear in only one out of the six studied years), the central role played by the study of neurodegenerative disorders in the neuroscience community structure, and an apparent growth of behavioral/systems neuroscience with a corresponding shrinkage of cellular/molecular neuroscience over the six year period.

Multidisciplinary Cognitive Content of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Abstract:This article examines the cognitive evolution and disciplinary diversity of nanotechnology as expressed through the terminology used in titles of nano journal articles. The analysis is based on the NanoBank bibliographic database of 287,106 nano articles published between 1981 and 2004. We perform multifaceted analyses of title words, focusing on 100 most frequent terms. Hierarchical clustering of title terms reveals three distinct time periods of cognitive development of nano research: formative (1981-1990), early (1991-1998), and current (after 1998). Early period is characterized by the introduction of thin film deposition techniques, while the current period is characterized by the increased focus on carbon nanotube and nanoparticle research. We introduce a method to identify disciplinary components of nanotechnology. It shows that the nano research is being carried out in a number of diverse parent disciplines. Currently only 5% of articles are published in dedicated nano-only journals. We find that some 85% of nano research today is multidisciplinary. Hierarchical clustering of disciplinary components reveals that the cognitive content of current nanoscience can be divided into nine clusters. Some clusters account for a large fraction of nano research and are identified with such parent disciplines as the condensed matter and applied physics, materials science, and analytical chemistry. Other clusters represent much smaller parts of nano research, but are as cognitively distinct. In the decreasing order of size, these fields are: polymer science, biotechnology, general chemistry, surface science, and pharmacology. Cognitive content of research published in nano-only journals is closest to nano research published in condensed matter and applied physics journals.

Among the biological sciences at large, neuroscience is one of the most advanced fields in China. To take two examples, more than 70% of the articles published in the Chinese Journal of Physiology were in the category of neuroscience; among the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), scientists in the field of neuroscience outnumber scientists in other disciplines of basic medical sciences. This assay tries to analyze the historical and contemporary background underlying the current status.

Abstract:This issue marks the beginning of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems (TNNLS). By adding "Learning Systems" to the title, we now state explicitly the scope of the Transactions to include neural networks as well as related learning systems. This issue marks a new era in the history of our Transactions. The Transactions is now ready to face the challenges of the next 10-20 years. With the evolution of the fields of neural networks in particular and computational intelligence in general, the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems will continue to grow and to succeed in this ever-changing world. Also included are a few comments about the review process of TNN manuscripts and the introduction of 14 new TNNLS Associate Editors. Short biographies are included for the new Associate Editors.

Abstract:This preface introduces the Special Issue on Neuroimmunology in the Journal of Neurochemistry. The basis of neuroimmunology is to understand functional interactions between cells of the immune system and the central nervous system (CNS). These cells communicate across systems because they share signaling molecules and corresponding receptors. Moreover, this cell signaling allows for dynamic bidirectional communication between the immune system and the brain both within the CNS proper as well as across peripheral organs. Because of this, Neuroimmunology intersects with many biological processes including immunity, behavior, endocrinology, metabolism, and pathology. Understanding neuroimmune interactions that influence CNS homeostasis is especially relevant in health and disease. This special issue comprises of 14 articles, representing 9 review articles and 5 original articles, covering the roles of neuroimmunology relevant to CNS injury, CNS & peripheral infections, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and COVID-19. Thus, these articles highlight different aspects of neuroimmunology and signaling, and represent progress in understanding the consequences of inflammation on key communication pathways between the immune system and the brains.

Abstract:The landscape of scientific publishing has changed considerably in the few short decades since the three of us first engaged in neuroscience. Back then, articles for reference had to be sourced at the actual library (you know, the building with the books). Some of you may remember going to the library to manually check the weekly "Current Contents", which reported title pages from several hundred journals. Our very first papers were carefully printed in triplicate on heavy paper and posted off for review. And woe betide if there was a smudge on your photomicrograph - you'd have to wait 12 days for a new version to be captured and sent away to the developer to be printed.

Abstract:A field's priorities are reflected by the contents of its high-impact journals. Researchers in turn may choose to pursue research objectives based on what is believed to be most highly valued by their peers. However, these assessments of the field's priorities are often subjective, owing to a lack of formal quantification of high-impact journals' contents. By compiling a corpus of abstracts from within the field neuroscience, I was able to analyze which terms had differential frequencies between 13 high-impact and 14 medium-impact journals. Approximately 50,000 neuroscience abstracts were analyzed over the years 2014-2018. Several broad trends emerged from the analysis of which terms were biased toward high-impact journals. Generally speaking, high-impact journals tended to feature: genetic studies, use of the latest and most sophisticated methods, examinations of the orbitofrontal cortex or amygdala, and/or use of human or non-mammalian subjects. Medium-impact journals tended to feature motor or cardiovascular studies, use of older methods, examinations of caudal brain regions, and/or rats as subjects. This approach also allowed for the comparison of high-impact bias among: brain regions, methods, neurotransmitters, study species, and broad themes within neuroscience. A systematic approach to the contents of high-impact journals offers the field an objective view of itself.

Abstract:What is the first association that comes to mind when you hear “fiber optics”? Connecting one side of the Atlantic Ocean to the other, or high-definition television? For sure, it would not be manipulation of neuronal firing … unless you are a neuroscientist. While neuroscience has relied on optics to power discovery and advancement from the beginning of time, brain imaging remains an exotic application in mainstream optics and photonics. The Presidential BRAIN Initiative that launched in April of 2013 targets this disconnect by encouraging “hard core” technology experts to step up to the neuroscience quest. The goal of the Initiative is to develop new technologies driven by the needs of basic and translational neuroscience—easy to say, but difficult to do. The first challenge for the technology expert is to understand the needs of the endpoint application; for the neuroscientist, the challenge is to keep up with the rapidly developing technology and recognize its strengths and limitations. Generally speaking, brain tissue is an unfriendly environment for optics. Light is scattered by microscopic structures with different refractive indices and absorbed by natural chromophores. Red blood cells fly through capillaries, scattering and absorbing light along the way. The brain moves (slightly but noticeably on a microscopic scale) with respiration and heartbeat beyond what can be corrected for by rigid body registration. Furthermore, the duration of an action potential is only 1–2 ms, which imposes stringent constraints on the acquisition speed required for measurements of brain activity. In addition, brain tissue is sensitive to heating and photodynamic damage, placing limits on photon flux. Despite these limitations, consider this: arguably the most significant breakthroughs in neuroscience have been powered by advancements in optical technology, from the discovery of synaptic junctions by the father of modern neuroscience Ramon Y. Cajal in the 1880s, to contemporary advances in cell- and system-level neuroscience through utilization of two-photon microscopy, optogenetics, and superresolution microscopy. The BRAIN Initiative seeks to accelerate these efforts by scaling up the development of existing tools and encouraging exploration of new technological concepts to dramatically advance our understanding of how the brain works. Our first issue of Neurophotonics is published on the upswing of the initiative with a dedicated special section featuring a spectrum of papers on optical tools for measurement and manipulation of the brain’s neuronal, metabolic, and hemodynamic activity. This wide scope reflects the breadth of the arena and underscores collaborative opportunities for optics and photonics for targeted technology development rooted in the forefront of neuroscience research. In short, advances in the brain sciences require the attention of strong technology experts. The BRAIN Initiative has already succeeded in increasing the visibility of this seemingly exotic application within the optical community. The next step is to provide a path for a long-term multidisciplinary relationship enabling comprehensive technological developments emerging from proof of concept studies and leading to broad adoption by basic and clinical neuroscientists. Somewhere along this path, the brain application will become a little less exotic. However, the excitement will only grow as application-driven technology and technology-powered neuroscience evolve in a continual dialog.

Abstract:Over the past 50 years, the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (JNN) has grown from a neurosurgical focus to the broader neuroscience focus alongside the professional nursing organization that it supports. Stroke care in JNN focused on the surgical treatment and nursing care for cranial treatment of conditions such as cerebral aneurysm, carotid disease, arteriovenous malformation, and artery bypass procedures. As medical science has grown and new medications and treatment modalities have been successfully trialed, JNN has brought to its readership this information about recombinant tissue plasminogen activator, endovascular trials, and new assessment tools such as the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale. JNN is on the forefront of publishing nursing research in the areas of stroke caregiver needs and community education for rapid treatment of stroke and stroke risk reduction. The journal has been timely and informative in keeping neuroscience nurses on the forefront of the changing world of stroke nursing.

Abstract:Neuroscience research has entered a phase of key discoveries in the realm of neurogenomics owing to strong financial and intellectual support for resource building and tool development. The previous challenge of tissue heterogeneity has been met with the application of techniques that can profile individual cells at scale. Moreover, the ability to perturb genes, gene regulatory elements and neuronal activity in a cell-type-specific manner has been integrated with gene expression studies to uncover the functional underpinnings of the genome at a systems level. Although these insights have necessarily been grounded in model systems, we now have the opportunity to apply these approaches in humans and in human tissue, thanks to advances in human genetics, brain imaging and tissue collection. We acknowledge that there will probably always be limits to the extent to which we can apply the genomic tools developed in model systems to human neuroscience; however, as we describe in this Perspective, the neuroscience field is now primed with an optimal foundation for tackling this ambitious challenge. The application of systems-level network analyses to these datasets will facilitate a deeper appreciation of human neurogenomics that cannot otherwise be achieved from directly observable phenomena.

Abstract:Introduction: The field of neurosurgery faces challenges with the increasing involvement of other medical specialties in areas traditionally led by neurosurgeons. This paper examines the implications of this development for neurosurgical practice and patient care, with a focus on specialized areas like pain management, peripheral nerve surgery, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Research question: To assess the implications of the expanded scope of other specialties for neurosurgical practice and to consider the response of the EANS Frontiers in Neurosurgery Committee to these challenges. Materials and methods: Analysis of recent trends in neurosurgery, including the shift in various procedures to other specialties, demographic challenges, and the emergence of minimally invasive techniques. This analysis draws on relevant literature and the initiatives of the Frontiers in Neurosurgery Committee. Results: We explore a possible decrease in neurosurgical involvement in certain areas, which may have implications for patient care and access to specialized neurosurgical interventions. The Frontiers in Neurosurgery Committee's role in addressing these concerns is highlighted, particularly in terms of training, education, research, and networking for neurosurgeons, especially those early in their careers. Discussion and conclusion: The potential decrease in neurosurgical involvement in certain specialties warrants attention. This paper emphasizes the importance of carefully considered responses by neurosurgical societies, such as the EANS, to ensure neurosurgeons continue to play a vital role in managing neurological diseases. Emphasis on ongoing education, integration of minimally invasive techniques, and multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for maintaining the field's competence and quality in patient care.
