Abstract:U shape bolts using for automobile fractured during transport process.The fracture position was located at the forged and bended part.The fractured bolt was researched by macroscopic and microcopic analysis.The results show that over burning happened because of the too high inductive heating temperature and hot crack formed by stresed.Finally after cooling the crack extended under low stress and led to the fracture.

Abstract:The numerical simulation method that is based on the dynamic damage responses of initially flawed steel structures is proposed.It is pointed out that the critical step is to solve the fractures of steel structures with working stresses lower than yield stress.In order to analyze the developing process from damaging to fracturing of steel structures,the sensitivity of the initially flawed steel structure used to predict the damage accumulation is presented.The initial crack is regarded as the sensitivity parameters,and the mathematical models are provided for the fatigue damage of steel structures.Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method for the fracture resistance and fatigue life of steel structures with different initial flaws.The conclusions can offer guidelines for the security design of steel structures.

Abstract:Based on a system of macro & micro fracture appearance observation, energy spectrum analysis, metallurgical structure inspection and hardness test, the fracture mechanism and cause of specimen of 16Mn steel were obtained. The results showed that the large load was the main reason for the 16Mn steel specimen fracture, the fracture surfaces were different dimensional equiaxed dimples and some spherical particles which contain higher Mn, Si and O. The spherical particles may be an oxide which may be caused by the manufacturing process.

Abstract:In this paper, the mechanical properties of 5083 aluminum alloy sheet were put under tensile test at different temperatures, and the fracture form and basic law of fracture were qualitatively analyzed. The program of fractal fracture morphology by the box-counting method was developed based on the fractal principle. We calculated the fractal dimension of the material at different temperatures, determined its relationship with tensile deformation properties at different temperatures, and established a quantitative theoretical relationship. The results show that the fractal dimension of 5083 aluminum alloy sheet at different tensile deformation temperatures is between 1.77 and 1.79 and the fractal dimension, yield strength, and tensile strength decrease with the growing deformation temperature. At the same tensile deformation temperature, the higher the magnification, the greater the fractal dimension of the scanning electron microscopy image.

Abstract:Comparing with the traditional macro-scale fracture mechanics, meso-scale mechanics focus on researching the effect of the inner damage evolution on the macro fracture of material. In this study, specimens of different geometry were designed with C45 steel, and used to perform tensile, compression, torsion and fine-blanking test as well, so as to obtain the fracture topography under different stress triaxiality. With the aid of numerical simulation and SEM, the mechanism of damage and ductile fracture in different stress state was investigated.

Abstract:Fe–25Mn–3Si–3Al steels obtained much attention because of their excellent mechanical properties. However, the fracture behavior of the steels remains unclear. In this study, Fe–25Mn–3Si–3Al steels were ex situ tensile strained and tested by a transmission electron microscope to investigate the relationship between crack and twins. The propagation of crack was examined and related to the dislocation slip and twinning. Cracks initiate related to the moving of dislocations and propagate along the slip bands. Twins parallel and inclined to the crack are produced during crack propagating. The inclined twins notably block and blunt the crack, whereas the parallel twins exhibit an insignificant effect.
Study of Tensile Fracture Mechanisms of Bi-Morphic Alloys Γ-Tial at Room Temperature

Abstract:By means of in-situ tensile test of the specimen of bi-morphic alloys of γ-TiAl,observation upon its corresponding fracture surface with scanning electron microscope, and finite element computation, the tensile fracture mechanism of these alloys is investigated. The results reveal that most cracks are initiated and propagated along the interfaces between lamellae before the starting of plastic deformation. The driving force of fracture process is the tensile stress. In specimens with a slit notch, most cracks are initiated directly from the notch root and extend along lamellar interfaces. The main crack and a new one are then linked by the translamellar cleavage fracture over the barrier grain when the applied load increases. In V-notch specimens, however, a crack may be initiated at a distance in front of the notch root. The FEM calculations reveal that the fracture strength along lamellar interfaces (interlamellar fracture) is as low as 110 MPa and appreciably lower than that along the interfaces perpendicular to the lamellae (translamellar fracture), which shows a value higher than 250 MPa. This explains the reason why cracks nucleate and extend preferably along the lamellar interfaces.

Abstract:The structure of a fracture surface in massive glass-forming Cu 46 Zr 46 Al 8 alloy due to compressive deformation at room temperature is analyzed. The fracture surface is shown to have five typical regions reflecting the step development of the fracture. The slope of the fracture surface to the axis of the test piece differs from 45°, which means that the fracture mechanism is not a purely shear one; the fracture seems to be affected by normal stresses.

Abstract:The failure analysis for fracture on vertical arm of rear axle was carried by inspection of fracture,examination of microstructureand macrostructure,tensile test,X-ray detection and analysis of chemical composition.The main causation of fracture was that the weldingquality and the chemical composition of the substrate were not qualified.It is suggested that the welding technology and the quality of rawmaterial should be strictly standardized,supervised and controlled.

Abstract:A micro–macro method for evaluating the behaviors of direct tensile fractures during progressive loadings in brittle rocks is proposed in this study. The method consists of the suggested equation of the stress intensity factor of the mode-I crack that considers crack initiation, growth, and coalescence subjected to triaxial tensile loadings and the expression of axial strain relating to the extended length of the wing crack. The direct tensile correlation of stress and strain for depicting the complete initial elasticity, strain hardening, strain softening, and fracture stages is also studied. The reasonability of the presented method is proved by contrasting published results of experiment. Furthermore, the sensitivities of the density, inclination angle and size of the initial crack on the axial stress–strain curve, axial stress–crack length curve, tensile strength, crack initiation stress, and elastic modulus are determined. The tensile peak stress, tensile stress at crack initiation, and tensile elastic modulus descend with the increment of the inclination angle or size of the initial crack. The tensile peak stress initially descends and then remains constant, finally reaching a critical value with the increment of the density of the initial crack. The tensile elastic modulus descends with the increment of the density of the initial crack. The calculated results have a great significance for the safety evaluation of surrounding rocks in deep-buried underground engineering.

Abstract:The fracture morphology plays a much important role not only for the failure analysis of materials but also for the clarification of their fracture mechanisms. However, quantitative analysis of the fracture morphology of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) is still very lacking. In this study, both model and mechanical experiments were conducted to reveal the development of the fracture morphology and the effect of stress state. Inclined notch tensile specimens of a Zr-based BMG with different notch angles were designed to obtain various stress states. For the first time, some new parameters to describe the tensile fracture surfaces of the BMG specimens were proposed. Statistical analysis of these parameters shows that the stress state has a significant influence on the features of fracture surfaces. Through a discussion on the structure and heat evolution during tensile deformation, two damage mechanisms associated with thermal softening and weakening by defects are found to have a combined effect on the tensile fracture of BMG.

Abstract:Tension,compression and torsion tests on 45 steel were carried out for providing the critical values at fracture,and numerical simulation of the physical experiments was performed by using Gurson-Tvergaard(GT) porous material model to compare the relative application range of 5 widely used ductile fracture criteria.The comparison reveals that it is impossible to capture all features of ductile fracture under various deformation conditions by a single criterion.A unified fracture criterion,considering both tension-type mode and shear-type mode,is proposed and applied in the analysis.Experimental and numerical results confirm the validity and wide applicability of the new ductile fracture criterion.Moreover,material constants obtained through uniaxial tension and torsion experiments are used to predict the occurrence of ductile fracture in compression process.

Abstract:For metal bars with circumferential notch,a series of test samples are loaded by tension equipment.From the data of experiment,several strength indexes are calculated.For the stress concentration of circumferential notch samples,the stress concentration modulus is discussed and the stress intensity factor of the fracture mechanics is analyzed.The formula of computation of loading capacity for the bar with circumferential notch is deduced by nonlinear fracture theory,and the numerical results are in good agreement with the test results.

Abstract:Fracture theory is a classic, but not a well-dealt with, difficulty in solid mechanics. This paper has proposed the concept of characteristic fracture length of materials from the fact that fracture happens with area failure rather than point failure in materials. A unified theory is then proposed, which can be applied both to smooth and defected materials (whether with micro or macro defects). Brittle fracture tests with specimens of different sizes of holes are carried out to examine the fracture theory. It is found that the fracture stresses obtained by experiments agree well with those predicated by the presented fracture theory. Though the brittle fracture is the focus of the paper, the concept of characteristic length can be easily extended to fatigue or other failure problems.

Abstract:Tension, compression, torsion and shearing test on 45 steel and aluminum alloy 6082 were utilized for providing the experimental values of the critical values at fracture, and 11 widely used ductile fracture criteria were selected to simulate the physical experiments and their relative accuracy for predicting and quantifying fracture initiation sites were investigated. The comparing results show that it is impossible to capture all features of ductile fracture in different stress and strain states with a single criterion. A modified criterion based on effective strain and stress triaxiality was presented. The research results are checked experimentally using the blanking and fine blanking tests.
Analysis of Concrete Fracture Process and Size Effect

Abstract:In order to investigate fracture process of concrete crack and calculation method of specimen’s maximum bearing capacity, concrete compact tension fracture specimens, which had four different sizes, were tested, and one of the specimens was measured by electrical strain gages equipment. Based on experimental results, a series of curves were obtained and analyzed, such as curves of loading point displacement vs variable loading on the typical specimens, and curves of fracture damaged area deformation vs loading. The stress intensity factor of specimens with different size fracture was calculated. For specimens with different sizes, the computation method of structure bearing capacity was presented through the stress intensity factor’s computation formula and the fracture criterion. The calculated value of this theoretical method was compared with the experimental mean peak values, and the relative error of them is small. This indicates that the method of estimating structures’ maximum bearing capacity is feasible.

Abstract:Fracture constantly occurs during the plastic forming processes of thin-walled metal sheets due to the local uneven plastic deformation. During the processes, the sheets may experience different stress states, which are crucial factors related to the fracture. To predict fracture in different forming processes, various uncoupled ductile fracture criteria have been proposed due to their advantages of relatively simple expressions and less modeling parameters. Because each fracture criterion focusses on certain aspects of the deformation behavior, the ability of fracture prediction can be dramatically different. Thus, a systematical study on eight widely applied uncoupled ductile fracture criteria is carried out to evaluate their applicability under four different stress states, i.e. pure shear, dog-bone tensile, notched tensile and hydraulic bulging. Each criterion is numerically implemented and embedded into finite element models and is applied for fracture prediction of an anisotropic aluminum alloy sheet. The prediction results are compared to experimental results and the applicability of each criterion is analyzed.

Abstract:The springs fracture during the test of play to bolt. The means, such as chemical composition analysis, metallography and scanning eletron mircroscope etc, were used to analyse the springs. The result indicated: During removing hydrogen after cadmium plating the springs did not strictly execute technology, keeping a large amount of remanent hydrogen and dispersive distribution in the springs, and initiating crack along the grain boundary, which caused brittle fracture among grain boundary under applied force finally.

Abstract:Criterions of ductile fracture(with or without obvious localized necking) and shear fracture of sheet metal forming are analyzed respectively.Advantages and disadvantages of forming limit diagrams and ductile fracture criterions are also compared.The research progress on bending-enhanced forming limit with tight features and shear fracture occurring before necking of advanced high-strength steels(AHSS) are mainly analyzed.These two problems can't be predicted exactly by the conventional failure criterions embedded in finite element analysis software.The paper presents that it will be more universally significant to predict bending-enhanced forming limit with tight features when bending is assumed along the transverse longitudinal principle loading direction respectively.And it is also necessary to study the shear fracture mechanism of AHSS to develop a failure criterion that can be used in finite element simulation.It will help to develop the plastic forming theory and guide the engineering applications.

Abstract:In this investigation, fracture loads, toughness values, and the lengths of fibrous cracks on fracture surfaces were measured in Charpy V, crack tip opening displacement (COD), and precracked impact testing at various temperatures for C-Mn base steel and C-Mn and Ti-B weld metals. The uniaxial tensile properties of these metals were measured as well. By plotting the parameters related to toughness against the length of fibrous cracks measured, the energy absorbed by unit crack extension was estimated. The local cleavage fracture stresses, oy, were measured in Charpy V-notched and COD precracked specimens. The results showed σf about 600 MPa higher in the latter than in the former. Based on the results obtained, the factors controlling the toughness were analyzed. This was explained by the brittle transition temperature of the base metal being higher than that of the weld metal in the Charpy V test; however, it was lower in the COD test. The differences in fracture behavior between various types of toughness specimens were analyzed. The prerequisite condition for establishing the correlation between the results of Charpy V and COD tests was also discussed.
