Abstract:Kant’s manuscripts of 1796–1803, which the Academic German edition of his works combined in 21–22 volumes of under the invented by H. Vaihinger name ‘Opus postumum’, still attract the attention of researchers. Was there really a significant theoretical “gap” in the system of Kant's “critical”, transcendental philosophy, which built by 1790, needed to be filled, namely, to undertake a conceptual "transition" from the already constructed a priori metaphysics of corporeal nature (metaphysical principles of natural science) to experimental mathematical physics, to the entire scientific empirical investigation of nature? In the last years of his life Kant tried to solve a problem that was really decisive for the fate of transcendentalism, which he had already realized in ‘Critique of Pure Reason’ and concretized in ‘Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science’, however he found himself in a hopeless situation, which doomed him to the “Tantalus’ torments”. The problem that he was constantly thinking about necessarily arises in the system of transcendental philosophy, but has no solution in it. ‘Opus postumum’ is an important piece of evidence on the insurmountable difficulties faced by the attempt to “save” philosophy as a perfect and complete system of absolutely reliable, "apodictic" science, based on the idea of universal and necessary conditions for the experience possibility.

Abstract:Kant’s transcendental idealism was the beginning of the end of the telluricall philosophy of Being and its replacement by the cosmological philosophy of Nothing. Possessing the maximum of possibilities, Nothing is the highest expression of a priori and digitalism. The ontological correlate of Nothing is the concept of the Cosmos as a designation of any spheres where there is no life, the Universe and the Metauniverse. I. Kant is the first fundamental philosopher, he can be considered a speculative harbinger of the computer science, virtualism and cosmism as: 1) care orientation (fly away) into the galactic lifeless reality, 2) creating a bit-atomic, entirely artificial reality on Earth, in the limit, its transformation into a dead planet. And postmodernism, as a humanitarian and speculative reflection of the beginning digital transformation of life into technos, humanism into transhumanism, transition of human consciousness into posthuman intelligence. The humanitarian significance of Kant's philosophy in its culture and antropological inconsistency as live Genus homo. The ideology of human survival can be the philosophy of telluric realism in the modality of phenomenological substantialism, geocentrism and the value anthropic principle.

Abstract:Since the current volume of “NaUKMA Research Papers in Philosophy and Religious Studies” presents the first Ukrainian translation of Vittorio Hösle’s essay “The Place of Kant’s Philosophy of History in the History of the Philosophy of History,” this article provides a comprehensive analysis of the work of its author, a contemporary German and American philosopher who is a prominent figure in the “objective idealism of intersubjectivity.” The focus is on the methodology effectively employed by Hösle in his research, which combines historical and philosophical analysis of the works of ancient and modern philosophers with a paradigmatic approach to their thinking. A paradigmatic analysis enables us to examine the topic under study from the perspective of modern philosophy. Hösle’s research is primarily characterized by conceptual and systematic interests, even when delving into the works of eminent philosophers of the past, such as Plato’s philosophy of mathematics. Hösle effectively employs this methodology in his study of Kant’s philosophy of history, revealing how the moral and normative orientation of history, as outlined by Kant, is complemented, even complicated in a certain way, by the realistic anthropology of the author of the “Critique of Pure Reason.” The article also analyzes several other works by Hösle. The analysis demonstrates how, through paradigmatic and systematic methodology, Hösle identified four phases of the development of ancient philosophy, each characterized by distinct thematic and epistemological aspects. This methodology necessitates researchers to depart from the linear-progressive approach of the history of philosophy to focus on the cyclical movement of philosophical thought. Attention is drawn to the problem of the relationship between the “Science of Logic” and real philosophy (philosophy of nature and the philosophy of spirit), as well as the presence of intersubjectivity in Hegel’s philosophy. Various Hösle’s works demonstrate his ability to analyze the classical texts and cinematic masterpieces, as well as the controversial trends of the modern world and the challenges faced by humanity in the 21st century, including Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. These challenges require new approaches in international politics and law.

Abstract:The article is devoted to I. Kant's views on the problem of war and peace and the possibility of achieving "perpetual peace" on the basis of the pamphlet "To Eternal Peace" and some other late works of the thinker. In particular, attention is paid to the historical background of the appearance of the work as a certain completion of moral philosophy and philosophy of law in the context of developing one's own project of "eternal peace" taking into account the solution of specific problems of foreign policy at the end of the 18th century. The article examines a kind of Kantian "formula of peace", which claims universal significance. It is laid out in the preliminary and especially in the definitive articles of the imaginary contract. It is argued that it is based on three main principles: republicanism, federalism and the presence of a cosmopolitan citizenship limited to hospitality. These principles are complemented by the so-called "guarantees" of "perpetual peace": the progress of law and the spirit of international trade. The article analyzes apologetic and critical responses to Kant's work and its subsequent interpretations in European philosophy and political thought. In particular, special attention is paid to the interpretation of his work as a "pacifist manifesto". Based on this, it was argued that Kant was one of the founders of secular pacifism. The article reasonably refutes such a position on the basis of its anachronism and inconsistency with the views of Kant himself, who considered "eternal peace" only as a higher normative ideal of foreign policy. The influence of Kantian ideas on the formation of modern philosophy of international relations, in particular the theory of democratic peace (DPT), is indicated. It is indicated that the three main principles of Kant's formula of "eternal peace" found their embodiment in the postulates of this theory. At the same time, it is noted that the practice of implementing DPT in US foreign policy has not always had positive consequences. In this regard, the problem of its application to the analysis of the causes and course of the Russian-Ukrainian war is analyzed. There are different positions on this matter, but based on the latest publications and the real course of events. It is concluded that the "militant" version of DPT can be useful for achieving our victory and a just, fair and worthy peace.

Abstract:By the beginning of the twentieth century, periodicals had become almost the main platform for writers, many of whom acted as journalists in publications that are still inertially characterized by “party” characteristics. The real diversity of positions seems to us more complex and contradictory. On the one hand, the status of a Russian writer as early as the 19th century began to influence the socio-political life of the country. On the other hand, at the turn of the century, journalism, as never before, actively participated in the creation and destruction of writers’ reputations, adapted for the general reader the meanings contained in works of verbal art. The proposed book, the second issue of the new scientific series “Russian Literature and Journalism in the Pre-Revolutionary Era”, is devoted to a multifaceted consideration of these processes.

Abstract:In recent years mankind has greatly extended its knowledge of living things, in general, and itself, in particular. Such a wide-ranging body of knowledge has consequently led to the need for a theory to encompass it, that is, a coherent framework in which to systematically arrange mankind's understanding of itself, not only with regard to its physical nature, but to its individuality and sociality as well. Such a theory would moreover provide the means to mediate between the various domains of scientific and technological enquiry, on the one hand, and the cultural dimensions of human society, on the other. Already in the 18th century, Immanuel Kant strove to establish a discipline that was systematic, yet at the same time accessible. It was due to his efforts that philosophical anthropology was introduced into university curricula, to the benefit not only of philosophers, but of physicians and jurists as well. Kant's position is by no means prejudicial towards science. To the contrary, he was quite careful to appraise the impact of the sciences on the overall cognitive horizons of mankind and therefore on their potential to influence humankind's idea of itself. Clearly such a perspective is relevant to today's strongly felt need to reconcile modern neuroscience's revolutionary findings on the biological bases of the mind - of man's experience and behaviour - with the idea man needs of himself in order to orient his actions not only as individual but also as "citizen of the world" as well - something on which Kant worked with unremitting commitment throughout his entire research career. This article traces Kant's anthropological conception with regard to four specific issues: (1) its relation to science; (2) the relationship between empirical and transcendental in the speculative use and in practical use of reason; (3) the dialectic between what nature does and what human beings does, in the construction of humanity itself; (4) and finally about the character of the person and the character of the human species.
Matter and cosmogenesis in Kant's Theory of the Heavens

Abstract:In 1755, Kant published his General Natural History and Theory of the Heavens, in which he presented his hypothesis on the formation of the solar system, known as the primitive nebula hypothesis. This original theory of the heavens was written in dialogue with the conceptions of celestial matter of his time. On the one hand, Kant recognized Descartes' cosmological enterprise as a decisive mechanistic requirement for the intelligence of physics, but his vortices of matter fell into disrepute: Newton invalidated them mathematically. On the other hand, attraction at a distance provides an incomparable explanation of phenomena, but has left a gaping hole in our understanding of the law's material anchorage in bodies, and ultimately sends the question of how the system works back to God. He then set out to overcome the dichotomy established by these two authors, drawing on the Cartesian adage ''give me matter and I'll make a world'', but applying Newton's laws to cosmogenesis. In concrete terms, interplanetary space currently contains no matter capable of explaining the motion of the stars, we need to look further back into the system's past, to find an earlier state of material dispersion whose effects are still being felt. He must assume the existence of a cloud of dust, made up of the simplest elements and moved by the forces of attraction and repulsion alone. From this, Kant can form the hypothesis of the primitive nebula breaking down first into a phase of stellogenesis, and then into the creation of an accretion disk gradually forming the planets and their satellites.

Abstract:W. Dilthey’s program of “criticism of historical reason” was formed in a polemic with the legacy of I. Kant on the basis of transcendental reflection of the data of descriptive psychology. It was focused on understanding the radical difference between the sciences of the spirit and the sciences of nature. Starting from a critical rethinking of Kant's legacy within the boundaries of his own version of the academic philosophy of life, Dilthey began to talk about the fact that the reason, directing the cognitive activity of the subject, is characterized, first of all, not by the theoretical “purity”, but by its involvement in the “open” flow of history, which it gives meaning and sense through language. It interacts with historical experience, which arises through the synthesis of actual events perception in the time flow and memory images with real categories and concepts constructed by the intellect of the human subject. The ability to judge what is happening in history, its assessment in a humanistic perspective, is also considered by Dilthey as inseparable from the work of historical reason. The reason involved in the flow of time and life cannot be a carrier of theoretical “purity” and acts as inherently hermeneutic in its nature. Dilthey presented an interesting analysis of the main levels of hermeneutical procedure - emotional perception, expression and understanding, aimed at comprehension of the diversity of spiritual and cultural worlds in synchrony and diachrony of their existence. Denying the possibility of comprehending the meaning and sense of history by constructing substantialist schemes, he asserted the importance of narrative representation of the past in the light of the present. Dilthey's project of “criticism of historical reason” was based on the idea of the “openness” of the meaning of the past, due to its rootedness in the very way of human existence in time. This idea was inherited and further developed in the horizon of the fundamental ontology of M. Heidegger and other contemporary thinkers of hermeneutical orientation.

Abstract:One of the focuses of the Kantian philosophy is freedom.In order to fulfil the task,Kant opened up two interlinked approaches: one is "the cogitive approach"carried out in Critique of Pure Rea-son,the other is"the ethical approach"in Critique of Practical Reason.In the first Critique,Kant clarified the origin and capacity of categories,by which he establishes a priori categories,and further secures a priori grounds for all cognition.Meanwhile,Kant also established the objective limitations of categories and there-fore those of knowledge based on the categories.Fundamentally,the delimitation of knowledge means e-mancipating "human being"from cognitive subject and perceptual identity,thus securing and maintaining another more significant identity of human beings,i.e.,the"free being"who is being-it-itself.

Abstract:I argue that Immanuel Kant's critical philosophy -- in particular the doctrine of transcendental idealism which grounds it -- is best understood as an `epistemic' or `metaphilosophical' doctrine. As such it aims to show how one may engage in the natural sciences and in metaphysics under the restriction that certain conditions are imposed on our cognition of objects. Underlying Kant's doctrine, however, is an ontological posit, of a sort, regarding the fundamental nature of our cognition. This posit, sometimes called the `discursivity thesis', while considered to be completely obvious and uncontroversial by some, has nevertheless been denied by thinkers both before and after Kant. One such thinker is Jakob Friedrich Fries, an early neo-Kantian who, despite his rejection of discursivity, also advocated for a metaphilosophical understanding of critical philosophy. As I will explain, a consequence for Fries of the denial of discursivity is a radical reconceptualisation of the method of critical philosophy; whereas this method is a priori for Kant, for Fries it is in general empirical. I discuss these issues in the context of quantum theory, and I focus in particular on the views of the physicist Niels Bohr and the Neo-Friesian philosopher Grete Hermann. I argue that Bohr's understanding of quantum mechanics can be seen as a natural extension of an orthodox Kantian viewpoint in the face of the challenges posed by quantum theory, and I compare this with the extension of Friesian philosophy that is represented by Hermann's view.

Abstract:The rapid recent expansion of copyright law worldwide has sparked efforts to defend the 'public domain' of non-propertized information, often on the ground that an expansive public domain is a condition of a 'free culture'. Yet questions remain about why the public domain is worth defending, what exactly a free culture is, and what role (if any) authors' rights might play in relation to it. From the standard liberal perspective shared by many critics of copyright expansionism, the protection of individual expression by means of marketable property rights in authors' works serves as an engine of progress towards a fully competitive 'marketplace of ideas' – though only if balanced by an extensive public domain from which users may draw in the exercise of their own expressivity. This article shows that a significantly different, and arguably richer, conception of what a free culture is and how authors' rights underpin it emerges from a direct engagement with the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. For Kant, progress towards a fully emancipated (i.e. a 'mature' or 'enlightened') culture can only be achieved through the critical intellectual activity that public communication demands: individual expressive freedom is only a condition, not constitutive, of this 'freedom to make public use of one's reason in all matters'. The main thesis defended in this article is that when Kant's writings on publicity (critical public debate) are read in relation to his writings on the legal organization of publishing, a necessary connection emerges between authors' rights – as distinct from copyrights – and what Jürgen Habermas and others have named the public sphere. I conclude that it is the public sphere, and not the public domain as such, that should serve as the key reference point in any evaluation of copyright law's role in relation to the possibility of a free culture.
A science for gods, a science for humans: Kant on teleological speculations in natural history

Abstract:Kant's forthright rejection of rampant, ungrounded speculations in natural science, including in natural history, is well known. For instance, he dismisses the wild, unwarranted developmental histories of other early natural historians, such as Buffon and Herder, as “daring adventure[s] of reason.” However, as I show in this paper, Kant himself made use of teleological speculations in natural history, particularly in his three essays on race. I argue that, for Kant, speculations about nature's purposes are necessary to explain and to buttress the unification of organisms in real species, despite observable and heritable variations among members of these species. Without hypothesizing about nature's intentions, a mechanical, efficient-causal account of nature cannot appropriately ground the unity of species. Hence, I depict Kant's account of natural history as threading a needle between merely mechanical accounts of nature – which are incapable of achieving the goals of the science – and freewheeling, conjectural narratives about the origin and development of the Earth, life, and humanity. In the end, I conclude that my account reveals a substantive role for the faculty of reason in natural history, which dovetails with recent work on Kant's views on the non-physical sciences.

Abstract:This study aims to focus on the possibility of the connection between Immanuel Kant’s organicism, which decides on an organism with a natural purpose based on the idea of “self-organization,” and the fractal theory by Benoît Mandelbrot and traces the complexities of life in nature that go beyond the mechanical casual relationships by incorporating the implications of the two theories as an aesthetic premise. The fractal theory pays great attention to the simple geometric order hidden behind the complexity of the natural phenomena and explains that the whole and part of the whole are intensely and closely related in terms of genesis. Even though Kant lived through an era when the fractal theory had not been established, his theological view of nature reliably predicts the process of ‘self similarity-mutual feedback-self organization’.

Abstract:It is tempting but false to think that the unconscious was discovered at a given point in time when we suddenly became conscious of it. It is more accurate to say that long before that point, whenever it may be, it was not absent but present. Though we were unconscious of the unconscious as it were, it, however, understood in different ways, played a variable role in a large number of theories. Long before Freud focused on the unconscious in a way that has never ceased to capture the attention of the public, others, including philosophers, were interested directly and indirectly in the unconscious. Kant, who thinks of human beings as rational, emphasizes conscious activity. He believes that the Enlightenment culminates in the challenge to dare to know (sapere aude) in thinking independently of authority. He further believes that a moral individual must act autonomously, that is, according to principles that must without exception govern the actions of all rational beings. These are forms of conscious activity. But what if Kant s theory of knowledge were based on unconscious activity? This paper will examine Kant s epistemology in arguing that at the heart of the critical philosophy we find a conception of unconscious activity pointing to an anti-Cartesian theory of the subject as a conscious but also an unconscious actor.

Abstract:The article explores the reasons behind the inconsistency of Kant's perspective on the art of music. Kant’s aesthetics is a strict and harmonious system underpinning the analysis of aesthetic consciousness. His views produced a huge impact on the subsequent development of aesthetic thought. Despite certain contradictions, the Kantian philosophical system and, in particular, his aesthetic views are of timeless value. In this respect, it is paramount to explore these contradictions and understand their role in the Kantian philosophy. Kant was repeatedly reproached for his formal approach to aesthetics that disregards artistic practice. However, it was not criticism but, rather, direct apologetics of Kant's philosophical vision promoted among his followers that led to aesthetic formalism. In other words, the rationality of thinking was transferred on the very object of exploration—the art. Kant's comments on music, as an integral part of his aesthetic theory, are formal and sparing. They contrast with a growing role of music in the cultural landscape at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and the scope of Kant’s commentary given to other arts. Nonetheless, the aesthetic value of music was still recognised as music was listed in Kant's classification of arts. Our research has concluded that the reasons behind Kant’s inconsistencies are not limited to the well-known gap between the aesthetic object and the judgment about it. Another reason is his conscious detachment from contemporary musical practice, and, more broadly, from the irrational essence of music which he implicitly felt. Kant's rejection of sensory and emotional perception of music in favor of its rational interpretation identified one of the key issues for the future research agenda in aesthetics. The question of whether it is possible to perceive music as a non-conceptual art with the help of rational thinking alone emerged from the contradictions of Kant's aesthetic. This issue has not lost its relevance. In fact, it has created the basis for modern transformations of musical art towards pronounced intellectualism. The identification of the essence and grounds for Kant’s contradictions will allow to fend off accusations of formalism put forward by his followers and critics.
