Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in the joint estimate of user equipment (UE) position and orientation for visible light communication (VLC) with uncertain emission power. This joint estimation is a non-convex problem with a huge search space. To address this challenge, a novel VLC localization algorithm is proposed, which converges to the stationary solution of the joint estimation problem at an asymptotic quadratic convergence rate due to our problem-specific surrogate function design. A closed-form update rule is obtained via exploiting the hidden convex structure of the non-convex optimization problem. Hence, our algorithm has low complexity compared with the particle swarm-based optimization methods. In addition, the closed-form Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) on the estimation errors of the respective UE location, orientation and LED emitting power are derived. Moreover, the effect of critical parameters such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the number of LED transmitters, transmission distance and non-line-of-sight propagation on the VLC localization performance are revealed. The simulation result verifies that the proposed VLC localization algorithm under unknown VLC emitting power can achieve a huge performance gain over the state-of-the-art localization baselines.

Abstract:In this study, the authors propose an adaptive channel estimation algorithm for asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing visible light communication (VLC) systems and analyse its optimal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold through the simulation experiments. The novel estimation scheme combines the advantages of orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm and least-square discrete Fourier transform algorithm. It is robust to the changes in channel distribution and SNR range. The performance for a VLC system using 16-quadrature amplitude modulation is presented in terms of mean square error (MSE) and uncoded bit error rate. In the high SNR range, the proposed scheme improves the MSE up to more than 10 dB.

Abstract:This paper proposes an indoor visible light communication (VLC) system with multiple transmitters and receivers. Due to diffusivity of LED light beams, photodiode receive signals from many directions. We use one concave and one convex lens as optical antenna, and obtain the optimal lens structure by optimizing which corresponds to the minimum condition number of channel gain matrix. In this way the light emitted by different LED can be separated well from each other then minimize signal interference. However, interference increases in the case of system deviation, so we explore the system mobility. Then subsequent signal processing is carried out, including signal combining and successive interference cancellation (SIC). We combine the same signal received by different receivers to improve signal to interference noise ratio (SINR). And SIC can effectively restore interference and eliminate its impact. The simulation results show that channel capacity can be increased by more than 5 times and up to 20 times under the condition of receiver and transmitter alignment. In the case of movement, channel capacity can also be increased by about 4 times on average. Moreover, the mobile range of system is also significantly expanded.

Abstract:Channel modeling is a vital issue in visible light communications (VLC) system design. Up to now, at least four channel modeling schemes are widely utilized in analysis of VLC multipath transmission characteristic, i.e. the line-of-sight (LOS), single reflection, multiple reflections and integrating-sphere (IS) modeling schemes, which contain obviously different channel components. However, the accuracy and difference of these schemes have never been investigated sufficiently. This article first compares the specific performance of the schemes within a typical indoor scenario with distributed sources. The results show that first two deterministic schemes and IS scheme underestimate about 0.67~1.67 dBm power from wall reflection, which account for about 16%~40% of summed received signal power. This truncation can lead to part missing impulse response information and more than 20MHz overestimation of channel transmission bandwidth. In the room center, the bandwidth deviation is up about 60MHz.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) and visible light positioning (VLP) systems are usually designed separately to prevent mutual interference, while terminal mobility often introduces challenges that can degrade their performance. In this paper, we propose an integrated visible light communication and positioning (VLCP) scheme designed for mobile scenarios, encompassing both multiple-input–single-output (MISO) and multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) configurations. This scheme integrates both functionalities into a unified system. Utilizing decision feedback channel estimation (DFCE), we effectively estimate the dynamic channel state information (CSI) for both VLC and VLP, thereby potentially enhancing both communication and positioning performance. Simulation results across various routes verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. It is observed that when the terminal moves at 1 m/s, the VLCP scheme with DFCE can maintain reliable transmission quality, ensuring bit error rates (BERs) consistently below 1.3 × 10−2. Additionally, the mean positioning errors remain within the centimeter range in different routes, not exceeding 4.3 cm and 15.5 cm in the MISO and MIMO scenarios, respectively.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a ranging estimation scheme for indoor positioning based on high-speed visible light communication (VLC) system. The proposed scheme could provide high accuracy position of the receiver, without affecting the transmission efficiency of VLC. Discrete multi-tone (DMT) VLC signals emitted from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are employed for both of high-speed communication and ranging estimation. The ranging estimation is implemented by measuring the received signal strength (RSS) of each sub-carrier of DMT training sequence based on the power attenuation model. The Cramer-Rao bound as the theoretical accuracy limit of the estimation is derived. Calculations for a typical indoor scenario show that the proposed RSS-based ranging estimation could achieve high accuracy of centimeter level.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has become a promising research topic in recent years, and finds its wide applications in indoor environments. Particularly, for location based services (LBS), visible light also provides a practical solution for indoor positioning. Multipath-induced dispersion is one of the major concerns for complex indoor environments. It affects not only the communication performance but also the positioning accuracy. In this paper, we investigate the impact of multipath reflections on the positioning accuracy of indoor VLC positioning systems. Combined Deterministic and Modified Monte Carlo (CDMMC) approach is applied to estimate the channel impulse response considering multipath reflections. Since the received signal strength (RSS) information is used for the positioning algorithm, the power distribution from one transmitter in a typical room configuration is first calculated. Then, the positioning accuracy in terms of root mean square error is obtained and analyzed.

Abstract:Channel estimation is a key technology in indoor wireless visible light communications (VLCs). Using the training sequence (TS), this paper investigates the channel estimation in indoor wireless visible light communications. Based on the propagation and signal modulation characteristics of visible light, a link model for the indoor wireless visible light communications is established. Using the model, three channel estimation methods, i.e., the correlation method, the least square (LS) method and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) method, are proposed. Moreover, the performances of the proposed three methods are evaluated by computer simulation. The results show that the performance of the correlation method is the worst, the LS method is suitable for higher signal to noise ratio (SNR), and the MMSE method obtains the best performance at the expense of highest complexity.
A Three-State Received Signal Strength Model for Device-free Localization

Abstract:The indoor radio propagation channel is typically modeled as a two-state time-variant process where one of the states represents the channel when the environment is static, whereas the other state characterizes the medium when it is altered by people. In this paper, the aforementioned process is augmented with an additional state. It is shown that the changes in received signal strength are dictated by: i) electronic noise, when a person is not present in the monitored area; ii) reflection, when a person is moving in the close vicinity of the line-of-sight; iii) shadowing, when a person is obstructing the line-of-sight component of the transmitter-receiver pair. Statistical and spatial models for the three states are derived and the models are empirically validated. Based on the models, a simplistic device-free localization application is designed which aims to: first, estimate the temporal state of the channel using a hidden Markov model; second, track a person using a particle filter. The results suggest that the tracking accuracy is enhanced by at least 65% while the link's sensitivity region is increased by 100% or more with respect to empirical models presented in earlier works.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has attracted much attention in the research of sixth-generation (6G) systems. Furthermore, channel modeling is the foundation for designing efficient and robust VLC systems. In this paper, we present extensive VLC channel measurement campaigns in indoor environments, i.e., an office and a corridor. Based on the measured data, the large-scale fading characteristics and multipath-related characteristics, including omnidirectional optical path loss (OPL), K-factor, power angular spectrum (PAS), angle spread (AS), and clustering characteristics, are analyzed and modeled through a statistical method. Based on the extracted statistics of the above-mentioned channel characteristics, we propose a statistical spatial channel model (SSCM) capable of modeling multipath in the spatial domain. Furthermore, the simulated statistics of the proposed model are compared with the measured statistics. For instance, in the office, the simulated path loss exponent (PLE) and the measured PLE are 1.96 and 1.97, respectively. And, the simulated medians of AS and measured medians of AS are 25.94° and 24.84°, respectively. Generally, the fact that the simulated results fit well with measured results has demonstrated the accuracy of our SSCM.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been gaining increasing attention in recent years as it is appealing for a wide range of applications such as indoor positioning. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been applied to indoor wireless optical communications in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the optical channel as well as increasing data rate. In this paper, a novel OFDM VLC system is proposed which can be utilized for both communications and indoor positioning. A positioning algorithm based on power attenuation is used to estimate the receiver coordinates. We further calculate the positioning errors in all the locations of a room and compare them with those using single carrier modulation scheme, i.e., on-off keying (OOK) modulation. We demonstrate that OFDM positioning system outperforms its conventional counterpart. Finally, we investigate the impact of different system parameters on the positioning accuracy of the proposed OFDM VLC system.

Abstract:During the indoor visible light communication (VLC) channel modeling procedure, the transmitter constituted by an array of light-emitting diodes (LED's) is frequently modeled as a single point source for convenience. However, how accurate this simplified treatment is remains unanswered. This paper compares the channel characteristics of both the simplified point-source model and six practical cases having various numbers of LEDs. Our numerical results show that the deviations in terms of the channel's optical path loss (OPL), as well as its bandwidth and the channel's delay spread, are steadily increased upon increasing the number of LEDs of each transmitter, until LEDs spread almost over the entire ceiling. Even in the worst case, the deviation of the OPL remains below 0.41 dBo, whereas that of the 3-dB transmission bandwidth is below 1.67 MHz. However, the deviation in terms of the root-mean-square (RMS) delay spread can reach 1.88 ns. Moreover, in terms of spatial distribution of the RMS delay spread, there is a nonnegligible difference between the simplified point-source model and different transmitter configurations.

Abstract:With the characteristics of energy-saving and no electromagnetic interference,visible light communication (VLC) technology is becoming more and more welcomed in indoor positioning system.However,due to the influence of system delay between signals including delay caused by devices,path delay and signal delay,positioning accuracy of an indoor visible light positioning system will be affected when targets receive positioning information from multiple LEDs.In this paper,we find that the intensity of the received signal will have a fluctuation due to the existence of system delay through simulation and experiment for the first time.In this Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) system,the specific system delay of the system under different conditions is mitigated by introducing delay between transmitted signals and comparing the bit error rate of the system.By using beamforming,the positioning accuracy of visible light positioning system is improved.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging wireless technology to support high transmission rate for indoor devices by using existing lighting infrastructure, and VLC-based indoor localization is capable of providing high-accuracy localization. However, current VLC-based localization systems suffer from several key challenges such as sensitivity to random tilting of the receiver, which limits its full potential in real-world applications. In this paper, we design an integrated visible light communication and localization (VLCL) system to simultaneously support accurate real-time localization and communication services for indoor devices. To achieve this, an advanced differential phase difference of arrival (A-DPDOA) localization design is developed to simplify hardware and improve tracking robustness. In addition, a joint adaptive modulation, subcarrier and power allocation scheme is also proposed, which aims to improve the communication data rate and localization accuracy. Extensive experiments are performed to demonstrate that the proposed integrated VLCL system achieves higher localization accuracy and transmission data rate, compared to existing systems and schemes. Experiments also illustrate that the localization algorithm is more robust against the random tilting of the receiver under device movement in two-dimensional and three-dimensional scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an indoor multi-user visible light communication system employing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). For each subcarrier in OFDM, the corresponding precoding matrix is calculated in the frequency domain to eliminate multi-user interference. The distances of the multiple transmitter-receiver links are different, which results in various temporal delays and phase differences in the frequency domain. Phase information is firstly considered, whereby complex instead of real channel matrices are used for precoding, which reduces the channel correlation and achieves better performance. Moreover, two DC bias and scaling factor calculation schemes are proposed, and their performances are compared with zero forcing and minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) precoding techniques.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is envisioned as an important technique for short-range communications, but its potential for user device (UD) localization is not fully exploited, which is challenging due to diffuse-scattering interference and random fading. In this paper, we focus on the 6 degree-of-freedom (DoF) UD state estimation (i.e., 3D location and 3D pose angles) based on VLC. Specifically, a novel successive convex approximation (SCA)-based optimization algorithm is proposed, where UD location, pose angles and channel state are simultaneously estimated. Thus, the disturbance of random fading and diffuse-scattering interference for UD localization is alleviated via VLC-assisted channel equalization, and hence our SCA-based 6-DoF state detection solution outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. In addition, a unified performance analysis framework is established for VLC-based 6-DoF state detection, and structured information models are exploited for tractable performance quantification. A closed-form Cramer-Rao lower bound on UD localization error and pose angle estimate error is established respectively, and the impact of measurement noise, scattering interference, bandwidth, the quantities of photodiodes and light-emitting-diodes, etc, on the VLC-based UD state detection performance is analysed. Our closed-form analysis cannot only shed lights on the performance limits of VLC-based 6D state detection, but also gain insights into the impact of system configuration and fading environments.
