Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has attracted much attention in the research of sixth-generation (6G) systems. Furthermore, channel modeling is the foundation for designing efficient and robust VLC systems. In this paper, we present extensive VLC channel measurement campaigns in indoor environments, i.e., an office and a corridor. Based on the measured data, the large-scale fading characteristics and multipath-related characteristics, including omnidirectional optical path loss (OPL), K-factor, power angular spectrum (PAS), angle spread (AS), and clustering characteristics, are analyzed and modeled through a statistical method. Based on the extracted statistics of the above-mentioned channel characteristics, we propose a statistical spatial channel model (SSCM) capable of modeling multipath in the spatial domain. Furthermore, the simulated statistics of the proposed model are compared with the measured statistics. For instance, in the office, the simulated path loss exponent (PLE) and the measured PLE are 1.96 and 1.97, respectively. And, the simulated medians of AS and measured medians of AS are 25.94° and 24.84°, respectively. Generally, the fact that the simulated results fit well with measured results has demonstrated the accuracy of our SSCM.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a new mode that combines lighting and communication. Because it can meet the needs of large capacity and ultra-high transmission rate, effective analysis of indoor visible light channel characteristics can better provide VLC systems. We provide a reference basis for the design, and VLC technology using Light Emitting Diode (LED) as the light source has become one of the research hotspots in the field of wireless communications. To solve the problems of existing indoor visible light channel modeling methods such as being ideal, high complexity, or poor in versatility, this paper researches indoor visible light communication channel modeling and related theories and methods, using rays with strong scene adaptability. Based on the tracking method, starting from the need to reduce computational complexity and improve tracking accuracy, a channel modeling method for indoor visible light communication is designed. We propose a high-precision indoor visible light communication channel modeling method that combines central ray tubes and bidirectional ray tracing. We use the forward ray tracing method to model indoor visible light communication channels. The simulation experimental results show that the channel modeling method proposed in this article can effectively improve modeling efficiency.

Abstract:In recent years, the application potential of visible light communication (VLC) technology as an alternative and supplement to radio frequency (RF) technology has attracted people's attention. The study of the underlying VLC channel is the basis for designing the VLC communication system. In this paper, a new non-stationary geometric street corner model is proposed for vehicular VLC (VVLC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. The proposed model takes into account changes in vehicle speed and direction. The category of scatterers includes fixed scatterers and mobile scatterers (MS). Based on the proposed model, we derive the channel impulse response (CIR) and explore the statistical characteristics of the VVLC channel. The channel gain and root mean square (RMS) delay spread of the VVLC channel are studied. In addition, the influence of velocity change on the statistical characteristics of the model is also investigated. The proposed channel model can guide future vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) optical communication system design.

Impact of LED array simplification on indoor visible light communication channel modeling

Abstract:Indoor visible light communication (VLC) techniques are expected to utilize LED based infrastructure to provide data transmission and general illuminance. To ensure full coverage of a lighting area, multiple LED lamps must be employed. Each lamp consists of an array of LEDs. In typical VLC channel modeling, each array is usually treated as a single point source. This simplification offers very low computational complexity, but may lead to modeling inaccuracy in some cases. This paper compares different LED array approximation schemes in terms of channel characteristics. Either the actual structure of each array or an approximated constellation is considered. Signals from different sources undergo multiple reflections up to certain order. Numerical results show that different models give almost similar received optical power distribution across the lighting area, but significantly different average root mean square delay spread profile and thus channel bandwidth in the investigated cases.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has the potential to supplement the growing demand for wireless connectivity. In order to realise the full potential of VLC, channel models are required Discrete channel models based on semi-hidden Markov models (Fritchman model) for indoor VLC using low data rate LEDs are presented. Each channel considered includes background noise and differing types of interference from fluorescent lights and pulse-width modulated (PWM) LEDs, which could be part of an indoor smart lighting system. Models were developed based on experimental error sequences from a VLC system using an on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme. The error sequences were input into the Baum-Welch algorithm to determine the model parameters by expectation maximisation. Simulated error sequences generated by the models are compared to and, in most cases, perform better than simpler models with a single bit error rate. The models closely approximate the experimental errors sequences in terms of error distribution. The models performed better in channels where there is less interference. It was also found that periodic errors were introduced as a results of the PWM modulated smart lighting LEDs. These models have use for designing error control codes and simulating indoor VLC environments with different types of interference.

Abstract:This paper proposes an indoor visible light communication (VLC) system with multiple transmitters and receivers. Due to diffusivity of LED light beams, photodiode receive signals from many directions. We use one concave and one convex lens as optical antenna, and obtain the optimal lens structure by optimizing which corresponds to the minimum condition number of channel gain matrix. In this way the light emitted by different LED can be separated well from each other then minimize signal interference. However, interference increases in the case of system deviation, so we explore the system mobility. Then subsequent signal processing is carried out, including signal combining and successive interference cancellation (SIC). We combine the same signal received by different receivers to improve signal to interference noise ratio (SINR). And SIC can effectively restore interference and eliminate its impact. The simulation results show that channel capacity can be increased by more than 5 times and up to 20 times under the condition of receiver and transmitter alignment. In the case of movement, channel capacity can also be increased by about 4 times on average. Moreover, the mobile range of system is also significantly expanded.

Abstract:The non-line-of-sight visible light communications (VLC) is investigated via both the integrating sphere model and the cuboid model, which can significantly improve the VLC mobility. The influences of geometric configurations of the LED light source on the received signal intensity and corresponding impulse broadening are analyzed via ray-tracing Monte Carlo simulations. The present task may be useful for building the future's unified testing criteria of the LED light sources both in visible light communications and general indoor lighting.

Abstract:The impulse response and frequency response of indoor visible light communication diffuse channels are characterized experimentally in this paper. Both the short pulse technique and frequency sweep technique are adopted for experimental investigation. The iterative site-based modeling is also carried out to simulate the channel impulse response, and good conformity is observed between the experimental and simulation results. Finally, the impact of receiver pointing angles and field of view on the channel 3dB bandwidth is investigated.

Abstract:The visible light communication (VLC) technology has attracted much attention in the research of the sixth generation (6G) communication systems. In this paper, a novel three dimensional (3D) space-time-frequency non-stationary geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed for indoor VLC channels. The proposed VLC GBSM can capture unique indoor VLC channel characteristics such as the space-time-frequency non-stationarity caused by large light-emitting diode (LED) arrays in indoor scenarios, long travelling paths, and large bandwidths of visible light waves, respectively. In addition, the proposed model can support special radiation patterns of LEDs, 3D translational and rotational motions of the optical receiver (Rx), and can be applied to angle diversity receivers (ADRs). Key channel properties are simulated and analyzed, including the space-time-frequency correlation function (STFCF), received power, root mean square (RMS) delay spread, and path loss (PL). Simulation results verify the space-time-frequency non-stationarity in indoor VLC channels. Finally, the accuracy and practicality of the proposed model are validated by comparing the simulation result of channel 3dB bandwidth with the existing measurement data. The proposed channel model will play a supporting role in the design of future 6G VLC systems.

Abstract:Poisson random network was widely used in research on wireless communication and network recently. We utilized Poisson random network to construct the model for visible light communication. Detailed derivation of approximately analytical expression for SINR of visible light communication was given. The correctness and effectiveness of our approach was verified via numerical simulation. Our result will be beneficial to calculation of some critical quantities of visible light communication system, such as channel capacity, interrupt probability and coverage, etc.
Accuracy analysis of different modeling schemes in indoor visible light communications with distributed array sources

Abstract:Channel modeling is a vital issue in visible light communications (VLC) system design. Up to now, at least four channel modeling schemes are widely utilized in analysis of VLC multipath transmission characteristic, i.e. the line-of-sight (LOS), single reflection, multiple reflections and integrating-sphere (IS) modeling schemes, which contain obviously different channel components. However, the accuracy and difference of these schemes have never been investigated sufficiently. This article first compares the specific performance of the schemes within a typical indoor scenario with distributed sources. The results show that first two deterministic schemes and IS scheme underestimate about 0.67~1.67 dBm power from wall reflection, which account for about 16%~40% of summed received signal power. This truncation can lead to part missing impulse response information and more than 20MHz overestimation of channel transmission bandwidth. In the room center, the bandwidth deviation is up about 60MHz.

Abstract:Channel estimation is a key technology in indoor wireless visible light communications (VLCs). Using the training sequence (TS), this paper investigates the channel estimation in indoor wireless visible light communications. Based on the propagation and signal modulation characteristics of visible light, a link model for the indoor wireless visible light communications is established. Using the model, three channel estimation methods, i.e., the correlation method, the least square (LS) method and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) method, are proposed. Moreover, the performances of the proposed three methods are evaluated by computer simulation. The results show that the performance of the correlation method is the worst, the LS method is suitable for higher signal to noise ratio (SNR), and the MMSE method obtains the best performance at the expense of highest complexity.
A Novel Visible Light Communication Channel Compensation and Reconstruction Algorithm for Linear Decomposed CPM Signals

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:Inspired by the advanced integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in this Letter, we explore the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) optical channels formed by reflections from the ground or objects to establish an integrated channel model for simultaneous communication and sensing. The integrated channel model can, on the one hand, perceive the changes in the surrounding environment and, on the other hand, determine whether these changes positively or negatively affect the quality of communication simultaneously. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed model, from sensing, we analyze the impact of various floor materials and visible light communication (VLC) users on the integrated channel; from communication, we characterize the influence of perceived environmental changes on communication performance by calculating throughput. Experimental results confirm the capability of the derived model, which can support the design and deployment of VL-based ISAC networks.
VICO: A Framework for Configuring Indoor Visible Light Communication Networks

Abstract:Visible light communications (VLC) are gaining popularity and may provide an alternative means of communications in indoor settings. However, to date, there is very little research on the deployment or higher layer protocol design for VLC. In this paper, we first perform channel measurements using a physical layer testbed in the visible light band to understand its physical layer characteristics. Our measurements suggest that in order to increase data rates with VLC (1) the beam width of a communicating link can be shrunk, and (2) the transmission beam can be tuned to point towards the target recipient. We then perform Matlab simulations to verify that the human eye is able to accommodate the changes brought by shrinking a beam or by tuning the beam direction appropriately. As our main contribution, we then design a configuration framework for a VLC indoor local area network, which we call VICO; we leverage the above features towards achieving the highest throughput while maintaining fairness. VICO first tunes the beamwidths and pointing angles of the transmitters to configurations that provide the highest throughput for each client. It then tries to schedule transmissions while accounting for conflicts and the VLC PHY characteristics. Finally, it opportunistically tunes the idle LEDs to reinforce existing transmissions to increase throughput to the extent possible. We perform extensive simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of VICO. We find that VICO provides as much as 5-fold increase in throughput compared to a simple scheduler that does not exploit the possible variations in beamwidth or beam-angle.
Accuracy of the Point-Source Model of a Multi-LED Array in High-Speed Visible Light Communication Channel Characterization

Abstract:During the indoor visible light communication (VLC) channel modeling procedure, the transmitter constituted by an array of light-emitting diodes (LED's) is frequently modeled as a single point source for convenience. However, how accurate this simplified treatment is remains unanswered. This paper compares the channel characteristics of both the simplified point-source model and six practical cases having various numbers of LEDs. Our numerical results show that the deviations in terms of the channel's optical path loss (OPL), as well as its bandwidth and the channel's delay spread, are steadily increased upon increasing the number of LEDs of each transmitter, until LEDs spread almost over the entire ceiling. Even in the worst case, the deviation of the OPL remains below 0.41 dBo, whereas that of the 3-dB transmission bandwidth is below 1.67 MHz. However, the deviation in terms of the root-mean-square (RMS) delay spread can reach 1.88 ns. Moreover, in terms of spatial distribution of the RMS delay spread, there is a nonnegligible difference between the simplified point-source model and different transmitter configurations.
Channel Characterization For Multi-Color Vlc For Feedback And Beamforming Design

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) can achieve higher data rate by increasing the number of channels using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. A fundamental question lies in the channel characterization for multiple colors, to investigate the correlation of different wavelengths. In this paper, theoretical analysis on the correlation is presented based on the multicolor light emitting diode (LED) and optical filter model. Experiments using LEDs of different wavelengths are conducted to observe the correlation of the channel matrix. Based on the experimental results, it is seen that the channel matrix is strongly correlated with a dominant eigenvalue as transmission distance and atmospheric condition change. Based on the low-rank feature of the channel matrix, we propose to project and quantize it in a low-dimensional space. Channel quantization design based on principal component analysis (PCA) is proposed such that the channel vector quantization can be transformed to scalar quantization. We also apply the one-dimensional channel quantization to the beamforming design, where the solution from the quantized channel matrix mostly shows loss lower than 1% compared with the optimal solition to the original problem.
Channel Aware Spatial Constellation Design in VLC MIMO Communication Systems

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has become popular for its feasible and reliable speed and anti-jamming features. In fact, the structure of the transmission system for commercial usage has mainly limited the VLC transmission to downlink. To achieve higher transmission rate, a proper design of transmission constellation should be designed according to channel condition. In this work, we develop a novel design of system constellation in cooperation criterion, by taking the channel state information into account, our proposed novel method has been given in simplified 2 by 2 VLC MIMO scenario with low computing complexity and high performance compared to traditional spatial modulation and repeating coding scheme. The interference from adjacent illuminant could also be decreased. Simulation result indicates that our proposed method could work well compared to other designs, a maximum of 10 times gain has been obtained in some particular conditions.
Optimized Base Station Location Planning for Indoor Positioning in Visible Light Communication System

Abstract:Abstract Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging optical communication technology, and indoor positioning of moving target devices is one of most important issues in the VLC system. In this study, we focused on LED base station location planning to improve the accuracy of the positioning method based on the received signal strength intensity (RSS) and the Kalman filter (KF). We developed a new base station location-planning scheme called equilateral triangle distribution. We proved theoretically that the equilateral triangle distribution scheme reduced the positioning error area when compared with the rectangular distribution scheme. The simulation results showed that the measuring error of the equilateral triangle distribution method using KF was less than 5 cm, even when the receiver was located at the boundary of the room. Our method verified that the VLC indoor positioning accuracy can be improved when LED base stations are distributed according to our equilateral triangle distribution scheme.
