Abstract:We study translation preserving operators, that is operators commuting with translations by a closed subgroup of a locally compact abelian group. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between these operators and range operators. Furthermore, we obtain a necessary condition for a translation preserving operator to be Hilbert–Schmidt or of finite trace in terms of its range operator. The last result is proved in the case that the subgroup is discrete or compact.

Abstract:We consider special elliptic operators in functional spaces on manifolds with a boundary which has some singular points. Such an operator can be represented by a sum of operators, and for a Fredholm property of an initial operator one needs a Fredholm property for an each operator from this sum.

Abstract:Let g be either a basic classical Lie superalgebra or gl(m,n) over the field of complex numbers C . For any associative, commutative, and finitely generated algebra A with unity, we consider the loop Lie superalgebra g⊗A . In [11] , Rao defined a class of central operators for g⊗A and conjectured that these central operators, which generalizes the classical Gelfand invariants, generate the algebra U(g⊗A)g for g=gl(m,n) . In this article we prove this conjecture and we also give a spanning set for U(g⊗A)G where g is the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra and G is the corresponding orthosymplectic supergroup.

Abstract:This article, addressed to a general audience of functional analysts, is intended to be an illustration of a few basic principles from `noncommutative functional analysis', more specifically the new field of {\em operator spaces.} In our illustration we show how the classical characterization of (possibly non-surjective) isometries between function algebras generalizes to operator algebras. We give some variants of this characterization, and a new proof which has some advantages.

Abstract:For a unital non-simple $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$ we consider its Banach--Lie group $G$ of invertible elements. For a given closed ideal $\mathfrak k$ in $\mathcal A$, we consider the embedded Banach--Lie subgroup $K$ of $G$ of elements differing from the unit element by an element in $\mathfrak k$. We study vector bundle maps of the tangent space of the homogeneous space $G/K$, induced by an admissible bounded operator on $\mathcal A$. In particular, we discuss when this vector bundle map is a Nijenhuis operator in $G/K$. The special case of almost complex structures in $G/K$ is also addressed. Examples for particular classes of $C^*$-algebras are presented, including the Toeplitz algebra and crossed products by $\mathbb Z$.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to introduce and study Lie algebras and Lie groups over noncommutative rings. For any Lie algebra $\gg$ sitting inside an associative algebra $A$ and any associative algebra $\FF$ we introduce and study the algebra $(\gg,A)(\FF)$, which is the Lie subalgebra of $\FF \otimes A$ generated by $\FF \otimes \gg$. In many examples $A$ is the universal enveloping algebra of $\gg$. Our description of the algebra $(\gg,A)(\FF)$ has a striking resemblance to the commutator expansions of $\FF$ used by M. Kapranov in his approach to noncommutative geometry. To each algebra $(\gg, A)(\FF)$ we associate a ``noncommutative algebraic'' group which naturally acts on $(\gg,A)(\FF)$ by conjugations and conclude the paper with some examples of such groups.

Stability relations for Hilbert space operators and a problem of Kaplansky

Abstract:In his monograph on Infinite Abelian Groups, I. Kaplansky raised three ``test problems" concerning their structure and multiplicity. As noted by Azoff, these problems make sense for any category admitting a direct sum operation. Here, we are interested in the operator theoretic version of Kaplansky's second problem which asks: if $A$ and $B$ are operators on an infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space and $A \oplus A$ is equivalent to $B \oplus B$ in some (precise) sense, is $A$ equivalent to $B$? We examine this problem under a strengthening of the hypothesis, where a ``primitive" square root $J_2(A)$ of $A\oplus A$ is assumed to be equivalent to the corresponding square root $J_2(B)$ of $B \oplus B$. When ``equivalence" refers to similarity of operators and $A$ is a compact operator, we deduce from this stronger hypothesis that $A$ and $B$ are similar. We exhibit a counterexample (due to J. Bell) of this phenomenon in the setting of unital rings. Also, we exhibit an uncountable family $\{ U_\alpha\}_{\alpha \in \Omega}$ of unitary operators, no two of which are unitarily equivalent, such that each $U_\alpha$ is unitarily equivalent to $J_n(U_\alpha)$, a ``primitive" $n^{th}$ root of $U_\alpha \oplus U_\alpha \oplus \cdots \oplus U_\alpha$.

The main goal of the paper is to find large classes of noncommutative domains in B(H) with prescribed universal operator models, acting on the full Fock space with n generators, and to study these domains and their universal models in connection with the Hardy algebras and the C^*-algebras they generate.

Abstract:We study operator algebras associated to integral domains. In particular, with respect to a set of natural identities we look at the possible nonselfadjoint operator algebras which encode the ring structure of an integral domain. We show that these algebras give a new class of examples of semicrossed products by discrete semigroups. We investigate the structure of these algebras together with a particular class of representations.

Abstract:We study $\mathcal{O}$-operators and post-Lie products over the same Lie algebra compatible in a certain sense. We prove that the group product corresponding to the formal integration of the Lie algebra, which is adjacent to the sum of two compatible post-Lie products, can be factorized in a way reminiscent of the classical Semenov-Tian-Shanskii factorization. In the second part, we explore applications in non-commutative probability. We introduce new transforms that facilitate the computation of conditionally free and conditionally monotone multiplicative convolutions involving operator-valued non-commutative distributions.

Abstract:We define the full and reduced non-self-adjoint operator algebras associated with étale categories and restriction semigroups, answering a question posed by Kudryavtseva and Lawson in [22]. Moreover, we define the semicrossed product algebra of an étale action of a restriction semigroup on a C ⁎ -algebra, which turns out to be the key point when connecting the operator algebra of a restriction semigroup with the operator algebra of its associated étale category. We also prove that in the particular cases of étale groupoids and inverse semigroups our operator algebras coincide with the C ⁎ -algebras of the referred objects.

Abstract:We introduce and study the notion of reduced spectral synthesis, which unifies the concepts of spectral synthesis and uniqueness in locally compact groups. We exhibit a number of examples and prove that every non-discrete locally compact group with an open abelian subgroup has a subset that fails reduced spectral synthesis. We introduce compact operator synthesis as an operator algebraic counterpart of this notion and link it to other exceptional sets in operator algebra theory, studied previously. We show that a closed subset E of a second countable locally compact group G satisfies reduced local spectral synthesis if and only if the subset <math>E⁎={(s,t):ts−1∈E}</math> of <math>G×G</math> satisfies compact operator synthesis. We apply our results to questions about the equivalence of linear operator equations with normal commuting coefficients on Schatten p-classes.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to exploit the structure of strongly continuous operator semigroups in order to formulate a categorical framework in which a fresh perspective can be applied to past operator theoretic results. In particular, we investigate the inverse-producing Arens extension for Banach algebras (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 88:536-548, 1958) adapted for operators and operator semigroups by Batty and Geyer (J. Operator Theory 78(2):473-500, 2017) in this new framework, asking and answering questions using categorical language. We demonstrate that the Arens extension defines an extension functor in this setting and that it forms an adjunction with the suitably defined forgetful functor. As a by-product of this categorical framework, we also revisit the work on Banach direct sums by Lachowicz and Moszyński (Semigroup Forum 93(1):34-70, 2016). This paper can be considered as a brief exploration of the triple interface between operator semigroups, Banach algebras, and category theory.

On the restriction maps of the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras over locally compact groupoids

Abstract:The Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras over locally compact groupoids have been defined in a way that parallels their construction for groups. In this article, we extend the results on surjectivity or lack of surjectivity of the restriction map on the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras of groups to the groupoid setting. In particular, we consider the maps that restrict the domain of these functions in the Fourier or Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a groupoid to an isotropy subgroup. These maps are continuous contractive algebra homomorphisms. When the groupoid is étale, we show that the restriction map on the Fourier algebra is surjective. The restriction map on the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra is not surjective in general. We prove that for a transitive groupoid with a continuous section or a group bundle with discrete unit space, the restriction map on the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra is surjective. We further discuss the example of an HLS groupoid, and obtain a necessary condition for surjectivity of the restriction map in terms of property FD for groups, introduced by Lubotzky and Shalom. As a result, we present examples where the restriction map for the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra is not surjective. Finally, we use the surjectivity results to provide conditions for the lack of certain Banach algebraic properties, including the (weak) amenability and existence of a bounded approximate identity, in the Fourier algebra of étale groupoids.

Abstract:We conduct the first detailed analysis in quantum information of recently derived operator relations from the study of quantum one-way local operations and classical communications (LOCC). We show how operator structures such as operator systems, operator algebras, and Hilbert C*-modules naturally arise in this setting. We make use of these structures to derive new results and bounds in the study of one-way LOCC, and we use the approach to uncover new derivations of some previously established results.
