Abstract:The nucleon structure functions probed in deep-inelastic scattering at large virtualities form an important tool to test Quantum Chromdynamics (QCD) through precision measurements of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and the different parton distribution functions. The exact knowledge of these quantities is also of importance for all precision measurements at hadron colliders. During the last two decades very significant progress has been made in performing precision calculations. We review the theoretical status reached for both unpolarized and polarized lepton-hadron scattering based on perturbative QCD.

Abstract:We present the basic aspects of deep inelastic phenomena in the framework of the QCD parton model. After recalling briefly the standard kinematics, we discuss the physical interpretation of unpolarized and polarized structure functions in terms of parton distributions together with several important sum rules. We also make a rapid survey of the experimental situation together with phenomenological tests, in particular concerning various QCD predictions. In the summary, we try to identify some significant open questions, to clarify where we stand and to see what we expect to learn in the future.

They comprise jet production and its interpretation in perturbative QCD, signatures to distinguish conventional QCD dynamics from possible new features of QCD at small $x$, and measurements of inclusive charged particle production. Abstract:The authors show that for deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering, the conditions which validate the impulse approximation are hardly satisfied when using ordinary instant form dynamics in the rest frame of the nucleus, whereas they are well satisfied when using instant form dynamics in the infinite-momentum frame, or using light-front form dynamics in an ordinary frame. Therefore a reliable theoretical treatment of deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering should be performed in the time-ordered perturbation theory in the infinite-momentum frame, or its equivalent, the light-cone perturbation theory in an ordinary frame. To this end, the authors extend the light-cone quantum field theory to the baryon-meson field to establish a relativistic composite model of nuclei. They then apply the impulse approximation to deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering in this model. As a first approximation, they consider only the nucleon degrees of freedom and neglect the Z-graph contributions. It is found that the results seem able to explain the EMC effect in trend but overestimate the ratio of the differential cross section for a bound nucleon to that for a free nucleon by about 8%. Some comparisons of the model with several relevant models are also presented.
On Deep inelastic Electron-Proton Scattering, the Gluon Density and DGLAP Evolution in the low-$x$, low-$Q^2$ domain

Abstract:We examine the determination of the gluon distribution of the proton in the low-$x$, low-$Q^2$ domain of deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). Adopting two-gluon exchange as the dominant interaction in the low-$x$, low-$Q^2$ domain implying the known result of scaling of the photoabsorption cross section in terms of the scaling variable $\eta(W^2,Q^2)$, we deduce a reliable result for the gluon distribution at leading order of the perturbative QCD improved parton model that differs significantly from the widely spread results from big collaborations based on evolving from a starting scale of $Q_0^2\cong 2$ GeV$^2$. The validity of evolution upon adopting its quantitative modification at low-$Q^2$ without any modification at larger values of $Q^2$ leads to a quantitative improvement of the extraction of the gluon distribution based on evolution from a starting scale of $Q^2$ conventionally chosen as $Q^2= Q_0^2\cong 2$ GeV$^2$.

Abstract:These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions. Examples and comparisons with experimental data from LEP, HERA, and Tevatron are also covered.

Abstract:The perturbative QCD predictions concerning deep inelastic scattering at low $x$ are summarized. The theoretical framework based on the leading log $1/x$ resummation and $k_t$ factorization theorem is described. The role of studying final states in deep inelastic scattering for revealing the details of the underlying dynamics at low $x$ is emphasised and some dedicated measurements, like deep inelastic scattering accompanied by an energetic jet, the measurement of the transverse energy flow and deep inelastic diffraction, are briefly discussed.

Abstract:In this review article, we discuss the current status and future prospects of perturbation theory as a means of studying the equilibrium thermodynamic and near-equilibrium transport properties of deconfined QCD matter. We begin with a brief introduction to the general topic, after which we review in some detail the foundations and modern techniques of the real- and imaginary-time formalisms of thermal field theory, covering e.g. the different bases used in the real-time formalism and the resummations required to deal with soft and collinear contributions. After this, we discuss the current status of applications of these techniques, including topics such as electromagnetic rates, transport coefficients, jet quenching, heavy quarks and quarkonia, and the Equations of State of hot quark-gluon plasma as well as cold and dense quark matter. Finally, we conclude with our view of the future directions of the field, i.e. how we anticipate perturbative calculations to contribute to our collective understanding of strongly interacting matter in the coming years.

Complexity problems associated with matrix rings, matrix semigroups and Rees matrix semigroups

Abstract:Complexity problems associated with finite rings and finite semigroups, particularly semigroups of matrices over a field and the Rees matrix semigroups, are examined. Let M_nF be the ring of n x n matrices over the finite field F and let T_nF be the multiplicative semigroup of n x n matrices over the finite field F. It is proved that for any finite field F and positive integer n >= 2, the polynomial equivalence problem for the T_n F is co-NPcomplete, thus POL-EQ_\Sigma(M_n F) (POL-EQ_\Sigma is a polynomial equivalence problem for which polynomials are presented as sums of monomials) is also co-NP-complete thereby resolving a problem of J. Lawrence and R. Willard and completing the description of POL-EQ_\Sigma for the finite simple rings. In connection with our results on rings, we exhibit a large class of combinatorial Rees matrix semigroups whose polynomial equivalence problem is co-NP-complete. On the other hand, if S is a combinatorial Rees matrix semigroup with a totally balanced structure matrix M, then we prove that the polynomial equivalence problem for S is in P. Fully determining the complexity of the polynomial equivalence problem for combinatorial Rees matrix semigroups may be a difficult problem. We describe a connection between the polynomial equivalence problem for combinatorial Rees matrix semigroups and the retraction problem RET for bipartite graphs, a problem which computer scientists suspect may not admit a dichotomy into P and NP-complete problems (assuming P is not equal to NP).

Abstract:The phenomenon of scaling in deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering is usually explained in terms of the Feynman parton model, and the logarithmic corrections to scaling are explained in the framework of perturbative QCD. For testing the validity of the parton model, we consider the deep inelastic electron scattering in a model in which the system electromagnetic current operator explicitly satisfies relativistic invariance and current conservation. Let the struck particle have the fraction $\xi$ of the total momentum in the infinite momentum frame. Then it is shown that, due to binding of particles in the system under consideration, the Bjorken variable $x$ no longer can be interpreted as $\xi$, even in the Bjorken limit and in zero order of the perturbation theory. We argue that, as a result, the data on deep inelastic scattering alone do not make it possible to determine the $\xi$ distribution of quarks in the nucleon.

Abstract:We study two-loop corrections to the scattering amplitude of four massive leptons in quantum electrodynamics. These amplitudes involve previously unknown elliptic Feynman integrals, which we compute analytically using the differential equation method.
