Abstract:I review recent progress in analysing deep inelastic scattering structure functions in global analyses. The new ingredients are new data and attempts to incorporate heavy quarks consistently. A new way of including the resummation of large $\log 1/x$ terms is discussed.

Abstract:The nucleon structure functions probed in deep-inelastic scattering at large virtualities form an important tool to test Quantum Chromdynamics (QCD) through precision measurements of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and the different parton distribution functions. The exact knowledge of these quantities is also of importance for all precision measurements at hadron colliders. During the last two decades very significant progress has been made in performing precision calculations. We review the theoretical status reached for both unpolarized and polarized lepton-hadron scattering based on perturbative QCD.

Abstract:The current status of measurements of the nucleon structure functions and their understanding is reviewed. The fixed target experiments E665, CCFR and NMC and the HERA experiments H1 and ZEUS are discussed in some detail. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions from global fits is described, with particular attention paid to much improved information on the gluon momentum distribution. The status of α s measurements from deep inelastic data is reviewed. Models and nonperturbative approaches for the parton input distributions are outlined. The impact on the phenomenology of QCD of the data at very low values of the Bjorken x variable is discussed in detail. Recent advances in the understanding of the transition from deep inelastic scattering to photoproduction are summarized. Some brief comments are made on the recent HERA measurements of the ep NC and CC cross-sections at very high Q 2 .

Abstract:We review the theory of polarized structure functions measured in deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, focusing on the most recent developments. We concentrate on the structure function $g_1$, emphasizing the phenomenological problems related to the extraction of the proton and neutron $g_1(x,Q^2)$ from the data, and to the determination of its moments, especially the first moment. In particular, we discuss the theoretical and experimental uncertainties due to the $Q^2$ dependence of the data, small and large $x$ extrapolations, QCD loop corrections, higher twist corrections, and, in connection to neutron experiments, nuclear effects. We also discuss the current status of the sum rules satisfied by the first moment of $g_1$ and their theoretical interpretation.

Abstract:This paper provides a thorough examination of the xF3 structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering through a comprehensive QCD analysis. Our approach harnesses sophisticated mathematical techniques, namely, the Mellin transform combined with Gegenbauer polynomials. We have employed the Jacobi polynomials approach for analysis, conducting investigations at three levels of precision: next-to-leading order (NLO), next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO) , and next-next-next-to-leading order (N3LO) . We have performed a comparison of our sets of valence-quark parton distribution functions with those of recent research groups, specifically CT18 and MSHT20 at NLO and N2LO , and MSTH23 at N3LO , which are concurrent with our current analysis. The combination of Mellin transforms with Gegenbauer polynomials proves to be a powerful tool for investigating the xF3 structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering and the results obtained from our analysis demonstrate a favorable alignment with experimental data. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.055204 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Deep-inelastic scattering at small x is a new field of QCD phenomenology which HERA experiments started to explore. The data show the feature expected by the perturbative Regge asymptotics. We describe the parton picture of structure function evolution both for increasing $Q^2$ and for decreasing $x$ and discuss the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD on which this picture is based. The steep rise of the parton density towards smaller $x$ gets saturated by parton recombination. An essential improvement of the leading logarithmic approximation has to be worked out in order to satisfy the unitarity conditions and in this way to describe the parton recombination in perturbative QCD. We review some ideas of the perturbative Regge asymptotics and some recent theoretical results about multi-reggeon exchange in QCD. Talk at the Tennessee Intern. Symposium on Rad. Abstract:These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions. Examples and comparisons with experimental data from LEP, HERA, and Tevatron are also covered.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to investigate the simultaneous influence of two-photon effects in quantum electrodynamics (QED) and logarithmic corrections in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) on certain observable experimental quantities (structure factors $A$ and $B$) in elastic electron-deuteron scattering. Analyzing these effects broadens our understanding of particle physics, particularly the manifestations of quark-gluon degrees of freedom in the deuteron. Consistent Treatment of Charm Evolution in Deep Inelastic Scattering

Abstract:We present a formulation which allows heavy quark (c, b, ...) mass effects to be explicitly incorporated in both the coefficient functions and the splitting functions in the parton evolution equations. We obtain a consistent procedure for evolution through the threshold regions for c anti-c and b anti-b production in deep inelastic scattering, which allows the prediction of the charm and bottom quark densities. We use the new formulation to perform a next-to-leading order global parton analysis of deep inelastic and related hard scattering data. We find that the optimum fit has alpha_S(M_Z^2) = 0.118. We give predictions for the charm components of the proton structure functions F_2 and F_L as functions of x and Q^2 and, in particular, find that F_2^c is in good agreement with the existing measurements. We examine the Q^2 range of validity of the photon-gluon fusion model for c anti-c electroproduction. We emphasize the value of a precision measurement of the charm component F_2^c at HERA.

Abstract:Using the colour dipole approach of the QCD perturbative (BFKL) Pomeron exchange in onium-onium scattering, we compute the cross section for small but hierarchically different onium sizes. A specific term dependent on the size-ratio is generated. In deep inelastic onium scattering it appears as a scaling violation contribution to the quark structure function near the BFKL singularity. We find that the extension of the formalism for deep inelastic onium scattering to the proton structure function provides a remarkably good 3-parameter fit to HERA data at small x with a simple physical interpretation in terms of the dipole formulation.

Abstract:Measurements of deep inelastic scattering from nuclei have revealed that the partonic structure of bound nucleons differs from that of free nucleons. One hypothesis is that this structure modification primarily occurs in highly virtual nucleons participating in short-range correlations, although distinguishing this from other hypotheses is difficult with inclusive measurements alone. Spectator-tagged deep inelastic scattering, on the other hand, may offer a way to specifically probe the partonic structure of highly-virtual nucleons by detecting the correlated emission of a spectator nucleon. Here, we present a method for calculating a "spectator-tagged" structure function for a nucleus by combining Generalized Contact Formalism's description of short-range correlations with light-cone convolution formalism to determine the impact of nucleon motion on the structure function. We apply this method to calculate predictions for helium-4, and find that differences in the virtuality-dependence of nucleon structure modification can lead to large measurable changes in the tagged structure function. The recent CLAS12 Short-Range Correlations Experiment, which collected electron scattering data on helium-4 and other nuclear targets, may be able to constrain this virtuality-dependence and help test whether correlations are the origin of the modification of bound nucleon structure.

Abstract:He3 spin-dependent structure functions, g13(x) and g23(x) , which parametrize the hadronic tensor in polarized deep-inelastic scattering, were evaluated within the Poincaré-covariant light-front framework. The Bakamjian-Thomas construction of the Poincaré generators allows us to make use of a realistic He3 wave function, obtained from refined nuclear phenomenological potentials. The same approach was already successfully applied to the He3 and He4 unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. To investigate the neutron polarized structure functions, g1n and g2n , a readily implementable procedure aimed at extracting the neutron spin structure functions from those of He3 is shown to hold. Moreover, the first moment of g13(x) was evaluated, aiming at providing a valuable check of the Bjorken sum rule. The present analysis is relevant for experiments involving polarized beams planned at future facilities such as electron ion colliders. Abstract:Abstract. An up-to-date global QCD analysis of high energy lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron interactions is performed to better determine the gluon and quark parton distributions in the nucleon. Improved experimental data on inclusive jet production, in conjunction with precise deep inelastic scattering data, place good constraints on the gluon over a wide range of x; while new data on asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes contribute to better determine the d/u ratio. Comparisons with results of other recent global analyses are made, and the differences are described. Open issues and the general problem of determining the uncertainties of parton distributions are discussed.

Abstract:The vast bulk of visible mass emerges from nonperturbative dynamics within quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- the strong interaction sector of the Standard Model. The past decade has revealed the three pillars that support this emergent hadron mass (EHM); namely, a nonzero gluon mass-scale, a process-independent effective charge, and dressed-quarks with constituent-like masses. Theory is now working to expose their manifold and diverse expressions in hadron observables and highlighting the types of measurements that can be made in order to validate the paradigm. In sketching some of these developments, this discussion stresses the role of EHM in forming nucleon electroweak structure and the wave functions of excited baryons through the generation of dynamical diquark correlations; producing and constraining the dilation of the leading-twist pion distribution amplitude; shaping pion and nucleon parton distribution functions -- valence, glue and sea, including the antisymmetry of antimatter; and moulding pion and proton charge and mass distributions.

Abstract:We present the second order contributions to the coefficient functions for the parity violating polarized structure functions and , thus completing the knowledge on DIS structure functions. We obtain the missing pieces from the known parity conserving unpolarized coefficient functions. We also present a phenomenological analysis for the phase space region the future Electron-Ion Collider is set to explore.

Abstract:A new " SK24 " nonsinglet QCD analysis of the structure functions at the NNLO approximation is performed, utilizing the global fit of the data from various charged lepton scattering experiments. We extract the valence parton distribution functions (PDFs) and provide a parametrization of them, along with the correlated errors for a wide range of x and Q2 . We compare valence PDFs and their uncertainties with those from different PDF sets provided by various groups. We also obtain valence PDFs and the strong coupling constant αs(MZ2) , taking into account the nuclear correction concerning large x as well as the target mass correction (TMC) and higher twist (HT) effects at the NNLO. In the large x region, we extract the higher twist contributions of xF3(x,Q2) , F2p(x,Q2) , and F2d(x,Q2) . We determine αs(MZ2) without and with considering the TMC and HT corrections and perform a comparison with the world average of αs(MZ2) and other reported results. Abstract:Coherence phenomena, the increase with energy of coherence length and the non-universality of parton structure of the effective Pomeron are explained. New hard phenomena directly calculable in QCD such as diffractive electroproduction of states with $M^2\ll Q^2$ and the color transparency phenomenon as well as new options to measure the light-cone wave functions of various hadrons are considered. An analogue of Bjorken scaling is predicted for the diffractive electroproduction of $\rho$ mesons at large momentum transfers and for the production of large rapidity gap events, as observed at HERA. A phenomenological QCD evolution equation is suggested to calculate the basic characteristics of the large rapidity gap events. The increase of parton densities at small $x$ as well as new means to disentangle experimentally soft and hard physics are considered. We discuss constraints on the increase of deep inelastic amplitudes with $Q^2$ derived from the inconsistency of QCD predictions for inclusive and exclusive processes and from unitarity of the S matrix for collisions of wave packets. New ways to probe QCD physics of hard processes at large longitudinal distances and to answer the long standing problems on the origin of the Pomeron are suggested. Unresolved problems and perspectives of small $x$ physics are also outlined.

Abstract:The goal of this study is to determine a set of diffractive parton distribution functions (diffractive PDFs) from a QCD analysis of all available and up-to-date diffractive deep inelastic scattering (diffractive DIS) datasets from HERA ep collider, including the most recent H1 and ZUES combined inclusive diffractive cross section measurements. This extraction of diffractive PDFs, referred to as HK19-DPDF , is performed at next-to-leading (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD). This new determination of diffractive PDFs is based on the fracture functions methodology, a QCD framework designed to provide a statistically sound representation of diffractive DIS processes. Heavy quark contributions to the diffractive DIS are considered within the framework of the FONLL general mass variable flavor number scheme (GM-VFNS) and the "Hessian approach" is used to determine the uncertainties of diffractive PDFs. We discuss the novel aspects of the approach used in the present analysis, namely an optimized and flexible parametrization of the diffractive PDFs as well as a strategy based on the fully factorization theorem for diffractive hard processes. We then present the diffractive PDFs, and discuss the fit quality and the stability upon variations of the kinematic cuts and the fitted datasets. We find that the systematic inclusion of higher-order QCD corrections could improves the description of the data. We compare the extracted sets of diffractive PDFs based on the fracture functions approach to other recent sets of diffractive PDFs, finding in general very good agreements.
