Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the color changes of gravitational microlensing events caused by the two different mechanisms of differential amplification for a limb-darkened extended source and blending. From this investigation, we find that the color changes of limb-darkened extended source events (color curves) have dramatically different characteristics depending on whether the lens transits the source star or not. We show that for a source transit event, the lens proper motion can be determined by simply measuring the turning time of the color curve instead of fitting the overall color or light curves. We also find that even for a very small fraction of blended light, the color changes induced by the blending effect is equivalent to those caused by the limb-darkening effect, causing serious distortion in the observed color curve. Therefore, to obtain useful information about the lens and source star from the color curve of a limb-darkened extended source event, it will be essential to eliminate or correct for the blending effect. We discuss about the methods for the efficient correction of the blending effect.

Abstract:Generalized Parton Distributions offer a new way to access the quark and gluon nucleon structure. We review recent progress in this domain, emphasizing the need to supplement the experimental study of DVCS by its crossed version, timelike Compton scattering (TCS), where data at high energy should appear thanks to the study of ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC. This will open the access to very low skewness quark and gluon GPDs. Our leading order estimates show that the factorization scale dependence of the amplitudes is quite high. This fact demands the understanding of higher order contributions with the hope that they will stabilize this scale dependence. The magnitudes of the NLO coefficient functions are not small and neither is the difference of the coefficient functions appearing respectively in the DVCS and TCS amplitudes. The conclusion is that extracting the universal GPDs from both TCS and DVCS reactions requires much care. We also describe the extension of the GPD concept to three quark operators and the relevance of their nucleon to meson matrix elements, namely the transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) which factorize in hard exclusive pion electroproduction off a nucleon in the backward region and baryon-antibaryon annihilation into a pion and a lepton pair. We discuss the main properties of the TDAs.

Abstract:The slow non-equilibrium dynamics of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model on a hierarchical lattice is studied by means of a coarse-grained description based on renormalization concepts. We evaluate the isothermal aging properties and show how the occurrence of temperature chaos is connected to a gradual loss of memory when approaching the overlap length. This leads to rejuvenation effects in temperature shift protocols and to rejuvenation--memory effects in temperature cycling procedures with a pattern of behavior parallel to experimental observations.

Abstract:Experimental tests of QCD predictions for event shape distributions combining contributions from hard and soft processes are discussed. The hard processes are predicted by perturbative QCD calculations. The soft processes cannot be calculated directly using perturbative QCD, they are treated by a power correction model based on the analysis of infrared renormalons. Furthermore, an analysis of the gauge structure of QCD is presented using fits of the colour factors within the same combined QCD predictions.

Abstract:The theoretical framework of hard exclusive reactions is reviewed with special emphasis on the Elfe project program. Perturbative QCD studies have shown that factorization properties allow to separate well-defined non perturbative objects which are crucial in the understanding of confinement dynamics from perturbatively calculable hard processes. The applicability of this factorization in a definite energy domain is controlled by some definite statements, as the dimensional counting rules, the helicity conservation law and the appearance of color transparency. The few data available indicate that the Elfe parameters indeed correspond to this well defined physics.

Abstract:Recent improvements of the hard scattering picture for exclusive reactions, namely the inclusion of both Sudakov corrections and the intrinsic transverse momentum dependence of the hadronic wave function, are reviewed. On account of these improvements the perturbative contribution to the pion's form factor can be calculated in a theoretically self-consistent way for momentum transfers as low about $2\,{\rm GeV}$. This is achieved at the expense of a substantial suppression of the perturbative contribution in the few GeV region. Eventual higher twist contributions are also discussed.\\

Abstract:A systematic study is made of the non-perturbative effects in quantum chromodynamics. The basic object is the two-point functions of various currents. At large Euclidean momenta q the non-perturbative contributions induce a series in (μ2/q2) where μ is some typical hadronic mass. The terms of this series are shown to be of two distinct types. The first few of them are connected with vacuum fluctuations of large size, and can be consistently accounted for within the Wilson operator expansion. On the other hand, in high orders small-size fluctuations show up and the high-order terms do not reduce (generally speaking) to the vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements of local operators. This signals the breakdown of the operator expansion. The corresponding critical dimension is found. We propose a Borel improvement of the power series. On one hand, it makes the two-point functions less sensitive to high-order terms, and on the other hand, it transforms the standard dispersion representation into a certain integral representation with exponential weight functions. As a result we obtain a set of the sum rules for the observable spectral densities which correlate the resonance properties to a few vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements. As the last bid to specify the sum rules we estimate the matrix elements involved and elaborate several techniques for this purpose.

These goals are centered around understanding the properties and the critical behavior of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD) in the non-linear regime of high color field strength and high parton density. Some of the current theoretical challenges are highlighted, and the place of heavy ion research in the broader context of modern particle and nuclear physics is discussed.

Abstract:Exclusive processes in hard electroproduction are one of the best place for understanding QCD in view of its factorization properties. In particular, in the limit of asymptotic gamma* p center of mass energy, they give an access to the perturbative Regge properties of QCD. The HERA experiment recently provided precise data for rho electroproduction, including all spin density matrix elements. From QCD, it is expected that such a process should factorize between a hard (calculable) coefficient function, and hadronic (p and rho) matrix elements. Such a factorization is up to now only proven for a longitudinaly polarized rho. Within the kt-factorization approach (valid at large gamma* p invariant mass), we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT taking into account the twist 3 contributions. We show that a gauge invariant expression is obtained with the help of QCD equations of motion. More generally, relying on these equations and on the invariance under rotation on the light-cone of the factorized amplitude, the non-perturbative Distribution Amplitudes can be reduced to a minimal set. This opens the way to a consistent treatment of factorization for exclusive processes with a transversally polarized vector meson, and clarifies the equivalence of two proposed parametrizations of the rhoT distribution amplitudes, illustrated here by the gamma* -> rhoT impact factor.

In all reactions reviewed in this paper, protons with an energy of 800 GeV were extracted from the Tevatron accelerator at Fermilab and directed to a Liquid Hydrogen target. The states reviewed include [Formula: see text], φφ and D* ± . Partial Wave Analysis results will be presented on the light states but only the cross-section will be reviewed in the diffractive production of D* ± .

Confronting perturbative QCD with the hardest exclusive reactions: kaon electromagnetic form factors

Abstract:Among countless channels of hard exclusive reactions, the kaon electromagnetic form factors (EMFFs) are of special interest, which have been measured up to $Q^2 \sim 50\;{\rm GeV}^2$ in the timelike domain. The kaon EMFFs thereby serve an ideal platform to critically examine the validity and effectiveness of perturbative QCD (pQCD) in accounting for hard exclusive processes. In this work we confront the pQCD predictions that incorporate the next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) perturbative corrections, with the available kaon EMFFs data set from experimental measurements and from lattice predictions. The inclusion of the NNLO corrections turns out to have a substantial and positive impact. If the profiles of the kaon light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) are taken from the recent lattice QCD prediction by {\tt LPC} Collaboration, the satisfactory agreement between theory and data can be reached for both charged and neutral kaons, in both spacelike and timelike large-$Q^2$ domains.

Abstract:We revisit the high energy semi-classical description of the exclusive processes DVCS, TCS, and Double DVCS by explicitly keeping track of the Feynman x dependence in both the hard and the hadronic matrix elements. This is achieved by a modification of the standard shock wave approximation to derive the effective Feynman rules, which leads to a generic expression on which we then perform a partial twist expansion to get rid of quantities suppressed by the proper physical scales. We obtain a compact factorized master formula that can be used to investigate the Bjorken limit at leading twist. In particular, we recover the full one-loop result in the collinear limit for pure gluon exchange with the target. Finally, we discuss the subtleties in taking the simultaneous collinear and small x limit.

Abstract:We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

Abstract:We have studied the phase diagram for chromatin within the framework of the two-angle model. Rather than improving existing models with finer details our main focus of the work is getting mathematically rigorous results on the structure, especially on the excluded volume effects and the effects on the energy due to the long-range forces and their screening. Thus we present a phase diagram for the allowed conformations and the Coulomb energies.

Exclusive heavy quark dijet cross section

Abstract:We study the exclusive heavy quark dijet cross section from $e^+e^-$-annihilation using soft-collinear effective theory. In order to resum the large logarithms of small jet veto parameter $\beta$ and jet radius $R$, we factorize the cross section into the hard, hard-soft, collinear, and collinear-soft parts. Compared with the case of a massless quark, the jet sector with the collinear and collinear-soft parts can be modified to include the heavy quark mass. The factorization of the jet sector can be systematically achieved through matching onto the boosted heavy quark effective theory. Heavy quark mass corrections enhance the cross section sizably and cannot be ignored when the quark mass is comparable with the jet size $E_JR$. We also analyze the exclusive heavy quark pair production in the limit as $R$ goes to zero. Using the resummed result, the top isolation effects on the cross section are estimated.

Abstract:We present recent results from lattice QCD relevant for the study of strongly interacting matter as it is produced in heavy ion collision experiments. The equation of state at non-vanishing density from a Taylor expansion up to $6^{th}$ order will be discussed for a strangeness neutral system and using the expansion coefficients of the series limits on the critical point are estimated. Chemical freeze-out temperatures from the STAR and ALICE Collaborations will be compared to lines of constant physics calculated from the Taylor expansion of QCD bulk thermodynamic quantities. We show that qualitative features of the $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ dependence of skewness and kurtosis ratios of net proton-number fluctuations measured by the STAR Collaboration can be understood from QCD results for cumulants of conserved baryon-number fluctuations. As an example for recent progress towards the determination of spectral and transport properties of the QGP from lattice QCD, we will present constraints on the thermal photon rate determined from a spectral reconstruction of continuum extrapolated lattice correlation functions in combination with input from most recent perturbative calculations.
