Abstract:Development of holomorphy-based methods in super-Yang-Mills theories started in the early 1980s and lead to a number of breakthrough results. I review some results in which I participated. The discovery of Seiberg's duality and the Seiberg-Witten solution of ${\cal N}=2$ Yang-Mills were the milestones in the long journey of which, I assume, much will be said in other talks. I will focus on the discovery (2003) of non-Abelian vortex strings with various degree of supersymmetry, supported in some four-dimensional Yang-Mills theories and some intriguing implications of this discovery. One of the recent results is the observation of a soliton string in the bulk ${\cal N}=2$ theory with the $U(2)$ gauge group and four flavors, which can become critical in a certain limit. This is the case of a "reverse holography," with a very transparent physical meaning.

String dualities and modular symmetries in supergravity: a review

Abstract:We review the remarkable interplay between modular symmetries and supergravity, which has led to major advances in both physics and mathematics in recent decades. Our focus will be on four-dimensional models with $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ local supersymmetry. We will look at the early articles on the topic, but also touch on recent developments. These results testify to how supergravity, when supplemented with the appropriate assumptions, can be turned into a unique window into quantum gravity.

Abstract:The effective action for type II string theory compactified on a six-torus is N = 8 supergravity, which is known to have an E7 duality symmetry. We show that this is broken by quantum effects to a discrete subgroup, E7(Z), which contains both the T-duality group O(6, 6; Z) and the S-duality group SL(2; Z). We present evidence for the conjecture that E7(Z) is an exact ‘U-duality’ symmetry of type II string theory. This conjecture requires certain extreme black hole states to be identified with massive modes of the fundamental string. The gauge bosons from the Ramond-Ramond sector couple not to string excitations but to solitons. We discuss similar issues in the context of toroidal string compactifications to other dimensions, compactifications of the type II string on K3 × T2 and compactifications of 11-dimensional supermembrane theory.

On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Generalized Symmetries in Supergravities and Superconformal Field Theories via String Theory

Abstract:In this dissertation, we study the generalized symmetries in supergravities and superconformal field theories from the string theory perspective. Part one is devoted to the study of string universality in high spacetime dimensions. Answering this question requires us to combine the following two approaches. In the "top-down" approach, We focus on supergravity theories in 7, 8, and 9 dimensional spacetime with 16 supercharges. We emphasize two discrete aspects of these theories: generalized global symmetries and frozen singularities. We give an exhaustive classification of IIB supergravity theory in 8D, particularly emphasizing these two discrete aspects. In the "bottom-up" approach, we present a consistency condition of general 8D supergravity theories involving their higher-form symmetries use it to rule out many global structures of the gauge groups in 8D supergravity theories that do not admit string theory constructions. Part two studies the generalized global symmetries of geometrically-engineered quantum field theories via string theory. We examined branes wrapping on relative topological cycles that give heavy defects that are charged under generalized global symmetries, which can then be used to construct new lower-dimensional theories. By investigating the string theory origin of the topological operators, we provide a general construction of these topological operators in the context of geometric engineering as branes wrapped on the homological cycles in the asymptotic boundary of the internal geometry. We illustrate this proposal by determining non-invertible 2-form symmetries in 6D superconformal field theories. Furthermore, by wrapping type IIB 7-brane on the entire asymptotic boundary of the internal manifold, we explicitly give a unified string-theoretic construction of two different types of field-theoretic non-invertible duality defects.

Abstract:A brief review of the status of duality symmetries in string theory is presented. The evidence is accumulating rapidly that an enormous group of duality symmetries, including perturbative T dualities and non-perturbative S-dualities, underlies string theory. It is my hope that an understanding of these symmetries will suggest the right way to formulate non-perturbative string theory. Whether or not this hope is realized, it has already been demonstrated that this line of inquiry leads to powerful new tools for understanding gauge theories and new evidence for the uniqueness of string theory, as well as deep mathematical results.

Abstract:This is a review of the new manifestly spacetime-supersymmetric description of the superstring. The new description contains N=2 worldsheet supersymmetry, and is related by a field redefinition to the standard RNS description. It is especially convenient for four-dimensional compactifications since SO(3,1) super-Poincar\'e invariance can be made manifest. Parts of this work have been done in collaboration with Warren Siegel and Cumrun Vafa. This review is based on lectures given at the VIII J.A. Swieca summer school and should be easily accesible to anyone familiar with the RNS superstring description.
Dynamical supersymmetry enhancement of black hole horizons

Abstract:This thesis is devoted to the study of dynamical symmetry enhancement of black hole horizons in string theory. In particular, we consider supersymmetric horizons in the low energy limit of string theory known as supergravity and we prove the $\textit{horizon conjecture}$ for a number of supergravity theories. We first give important examples of symmetry enhancement in $D=4$ and the mathematical preliminaries required for the analysis. Type IIA supergravity is the low energy limit of $D=10$ IIA string theory, but also the dimensional reduction of $D=11$ supergravity which itself the low energy limit of M-theory. We prove that Killing horizons in IIA supergravity with compact spatial sections preserve an even number of supersymmetries. By analyzing the global properties of the Killing spinors, we prove that the near-horizon geometries undergo a supersymmetry enhancement. This follows from a set of generalized Lichnerowicz-type theorems we establish, together with an index theory argument. We also show that the symmetry algebra of horizons with non-trivial fluxes includes an $\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb{R})$ subalgebra. As an intermediate step in the proof, we also demonstrate new Lichnerowicz type theorems for spin bundle connections whose holonomy is contained in a general linear group. We prove the same result for Roman's Massive IIA supergravity. We also consider the near-horizon geometry of supersymmetric extremal black holes in un-gauged and gauged 5-dimensional supergravity, coupled to abelian vector multiplets. We consider important examples in $D=5$ such as the BMPV and supersymmetric black ring solution, and investigate the near-horizon geometry to show the enhancement of the symmetry algebra of the Killing vectors. We repeat a similar analysis as above to prove the horizon conjecture. We also investigate the conditions on the geometry of the spatial horizon section $\cal{S}$.

Abstract:A large class of new 4-D superstring vacua with non-trivial/singular geometries, spacetime supersymmetry and other background fields (axion, dilaton) are found. Killing symmetries are generic and are associated with non-trivial dilaton and antisymmetric tensor fields. Duality symmetries preserving N=2 superconformal invariance are employed to generate a large class of explicit metrics for non-compact 4-D Calabi-Yau manifolds with Killing symmetries.

Abstract:We construct supersymmetric gravitational soliton solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrarily many vector multiplets. The solutions are complete, globally stationary, $1/4$-BPS and are asymptotically locally AdS$_5$ with conformal boundary $\mathbb{R} \times L(p,1)$. The construction uses an $SU(2) \times U(1)-$invariant ansatz originally used by Gutowski and Reall to construct supersymmetric asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes. A subset of these solutions have previously been obtained as supersymmetric limits of a class of local solutions of $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity found by Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope, and by Lucietti-Ovchinnikov in their classification of $SU(2)$-invariant solutions of minimal gauged supergravity.

Abstract:These lectures aim to provide a global picture of the spaces of consistent quantum supergravity theories and string vacua in higher dimensions. The lectures focus on theories in the even dimensions 10, 8, and 6. Supersymmetry, along with with anomaly cancellation and other quantum constraints, places strong limitations on the set of physical theories which can be consistently coupled to gravity in higher-dimensional space-times. As the dimensionality of space-time decreases, the range of possible supergravity theories and the set of known string vacuum constructions expand. These lectures develop the basic technology for describing a variety of string vacua, including heterotic, intersecting brane, and F-theory compactifications. In particular, a systematic presentation is given of the basic elements of F-theory. In each dimension, we summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the extent to which supergravity theories not realized in string theory can be shown to be inconsistent.

Gravitational index of the heterotic string

Abstract:The fundamental heterotic string has a tower of BPS states whose supersymmetric index has an exponential growth in the charges. We construct the saddle-point of the gravitational path integral corresponding to this index. The saddle-point configuration is a supersymmetric rotating non-extremal Euclidean black hole. This configuration is singular in the two-derivative theory. We show that the addition of higher-derivative terms in four-dimensional $N=2$ supergravity resolves the singularity. In doing so, we extend the recently-developed "new attractor mechanism" to include the effect of higher-derivative terms. Remarkably, the one-loop, four-derivative F-term contribution to the prepotential leads to a precise match of the gravitational and microscopic index. We also comment, using the effective theory near the horizon, on the possibility of a string-size near-extremal black hole. Our results clarify the meaning of different descriptions of this system in the literature. The thermal state transitions to a winding condensate and a gas of strings without ever reaching a small black hole, while the index is captured by the rotating Euclidean black hole solution and is constant and thus smoothly connected to the microscopic ensemble.

Abstract:Gravitational entropy arises in string theory via coarse graining over an underlying space of microstates. In this review we would like to address the question of how the classical black hole geometry itself arises as an effective or approximate description of a pure state, in a closed string theory, which semiclassical observers are unable to distinguish from the "naive" geometry. In cases with enough supersymmetry it has been possible to explicitly construct these microstates in spacetime, and understand how coarse-graining of non-singular, horizon-free objects can lead to an effective description as an extremal black hole. We discuss how these results arise for examples in Type II string theory on AdS_5 x S^5 and on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 that preserve 16 and 8 supercharges respectively. For such a picture of black holes as effective geometries to extend to cases with finite horizon area the scale of quantum effects in gravity would have to extend well beyond the vicinity of the singularities in the effective theory. By studying examples in M-theory on AdS_3 x S^2 x CY that preserve 4 supersymmetries we show how this can happen.

Abstract:We construct the N=2, D=9 supergravity theory up to the quartic fermionic terms and derive the supersymmetry transformation rules for the fields modulo cubic fermions. We consider a class of p-brane solutions of this theory, the stainless p-branes, which cannot be isotropically oxidized into higher dimensions. The new stainless elementary membrane and elementary particle solutions are found. It is explicitly verified that these solutions preserve half of the supersymmetry.

We analyze the phase diagram in terms of the QFT sources and we find that for every value for them, there are always two branches of supergravity solutions. We find that these two branches of solitons correspond to two possible vacua existing in the dual QFT when fermions are anti-periodic on an S 1 . We describe the interconnection of these states in the QFT at strong 't Hooft coupling in the large N limit. In 10 dimensions, our solutions are related to deformations of D3-brane distributions.

Abstract:A new heterotic N=2 string with manifest target space supersymmetry is constructed by combining a conventional N=2 string in the right-moving sector and a Green-Schwarz-Berkovits type string in the left-moving sector. The corresponding sigma model is then obtained by turning on background fields for the massless excitations. We compute the beta functions and we partially check the OPE's of the superconformal algebra perturbatively in $\alpha'$, all in superspace. The resulting field equations describe N=1 self-dual supergravity.

Abstract:Some selected applications of KT and HKT geometries in string theory, supergravity, black hole moduli spaces and hermitian geometry are reviewed. It is shown that the moduli spaces of a large class of five-dimensional supersymmetric black holes are HKT spaces. In hermitian geometry, it is shown that a compact, conformally balanced, strong KT manifold whose associated KT connection has holonomy contained in SU(n) is Calabi-Yau. The implication of this result in the context of some string compactifications is explained.
Spacetime aspects of non-supersymmetric strings

Abstract:The consistency of string theory as a theory of gravity does not rely on the presence of spacetime supersymmetry; however, its absence leads to the emergence of tadpole diagrams in the on-shell worldsheet formulation, thus undermining our control over the physics. Two-dimensional conformal invariance, a pillar of string theory, requires tadpole subtraction through the Fischler-Susskind mechanism, whose spacetime consequence is the emergence of scalar tadpole potentials. In this thesis, I explore several implications of the absence of supersymmetry in string-derived scenarios. I focus on the three ten-dimensional tachyon-free string theories in which spacetime supersymmetry is absent or broken, studying the gravitational consequences of tadpole potentials. First, I address vacuum solutions in terms of singular codimension-one vacua, explore their generalizations, and discuss the properties of their singular boundaries. I present an alternative perspective on these vacua based on the formalism of fake supersymmetry, in which the second-order equations of motion are replaced by supersymmetry-like first-order equations. I then turn to the topic of engineering vacua in the non-supersymmetric string models by constructing solutions that are supported by electric and magnetic fluxes and by providing evidence for their instability. Finally, I investigate brane-like solutions in the presence of tadpole potentials that yield both flux vacua with the isometries of supersymmetric branes and gravitational profiles that capture the backreaction of localized sources.

Abstract:We present various (0,2) heterotic supercurrent supermultiplets in (1+1) dimensional quantum field theories. From the minimal supercurrent supermultiplets, we deduce conditions on symmetry enhancement such as Lorentz invariance, (chiral) dilatation invariance, R-invariance, (chiral) conformal invariance and their various combinations. Our construction covers many interesting and/or exotic possibilities such as Lifshitz supersymmetry and warped superconformal algebra. We also discuss the corresponding supergravity by gauging the supercurrent supermultiplet. In particular, we propose a novel class of heterotic supergravity based on the virial supercurrent.
