Abstract:Standard weak coupling methods are used to study collective modes in the superconducting state of a double-layer system with intralayer and interlayer interaction, as well as a Josephson-type coupling and single particle hopping between the layers by calculating the electronic polarization function perpendicular to the layers. New analytical results are derived for the mode frequencies corresponding to fluctuations of the relative phase and amplitude of the layer order parameters in the case of interlayer pairing and finite hopping $t$. A new effect is found for finite $k$-dependent hopping: then the amplitude and phase fluctuations are coupled. Therefore two collective modes may appear in the dynamical c-axis conductivity below the threshold energy for breaking Cooper pairs. With help of numerical calculations we investigate the temperature dependence of the collective modes and show how a plasmon corresponding to charge fluctuations between the layers evolves in the normal state.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study collective modes in the superconducting state of bilayer systems, especially considering the intra - layer and inter - layer interactions as well as Josephson - type coupling and single - particle hopping between layers. By calculating the electron polarization function perpendicular to the layers, the authors derived new analytical results, which describe the mode frequencies of the relative phase and amplitude fluctuations of the layer - order parameters. For finite k - dependent hopping, the amplitude and phase fluctuations are coupled, so two collective modes may appear in the dynamic c - axis conductivity below the threshold energy for Cooper - pair breaking. In addition, through numerical calculations, the authors also studied the temperature dependence of the collective modes and showed how the plasma corresponding to the inter - layer charge fluctuations in the normal state evolves. Briefly, the main objective of this paper is to understand the collective modes in the superconducting state of bilayer systems, especially the behavior and properties of these modes under different types of pairing interactions (such as intra - layer pairing and inter - layer pairing). Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the authors explored the performance of these modes under different conditions, especially how they are affected by the inter - layer interactions and electron hopping.
