Abstract:Despite decades of intensive experimental and theoretical efforts, the physics of cuprate high-temperature superconductors in general, and, in particular, their normal state, is still under debate. Here, we report our investigation of low-energy charge excitations in the normal state. We find that the peculiarities of the electronic band structure at low energies have a profound impact on the nature of the intraband collective modes. It gives rise to a new kind of mode with huge intensity and non-Lorentzian spectral function in addition to well-known collective excitations like conventional plasmons and spin fluctuation. We predict two such modes with maximal spectral weight in the nodal and antinodal directions. Additionally, we found a long-living quasi-one-dimensional plasmon becoming an intense soft mode over an extended momentum range along the antinodal direction. These modes might explain some of the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy data.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the nature and mechanism of low - energy charge excitations in the normal state of high - temperature superconducting cuprates (HTSC). Despite decades of extensive experimental and theoretical research on high - temperature superconductors, the normal - state physics of copper - based high - temperature superconductors remains controversial. By studying low - energy charge excitations, especially the behavior of these excitations in momentum space, this paper aims to reveal the nature of some poorly understood collective modes in these materials. Specifically, the authors report their research on low - energy charge excitations in the normal state of copper - based high - temperature superconductors. They find that the unique features of the electron band structure in the low - energy region have a profound impact on the nature of the intra - band collective modes, leading to the emergence of a new mode. This mode has a huge intensity and a non - Lorentzian - type spectral function, in addition to known collective excitations such as conventional plasma oscillations and spin fluctuations. The authors predict that there will be two such modes in the nodal and anti - nodal directions, and also discover a long - lived quasi - one - dimensional plasma oscillation, which becomes a strong soft mode in an extended momentum range along the anti - nodal direction. These modes may explain some data of resonant inelastic X - ray scattering spectra. The main contribution of the paper lies in the discovery of these new collective charge excitation modes, which may help to understand some complex phenomena in high - temperature superconductors, especially the behavior in the low - energy region. Through these findings, the authors hope to provide a new perspective for understanding the normal - state physics of high - temperature superconductors.
