Abstract:We study the gluon density matrix in the nucleon at the level of twist-three and identify a number of gluon distributions which are present in the transversely polarized nucleon. We discuss measurement of these distributions in hard processes, in particular through single transverse-spin asymmetry in large p(T) photon production.

Abstract:We investigate hyperon polarization and its relation with the directed flow of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in noncentral Au+Au collisions at sNN=27 GeV. A modified three-dimensional Glauber model is developed and coupled to a ( 3+1 )-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic evolution of the QGP. Within this framework, we obtain a satisfactory simultaneous description of the directed flow of identified particles and Λ polarization, and we show a sensitivity of polarization to both the tilted geometry and the longitudinal flow profile of the QGP. A nonmonotonic transverse momentum dependence of the Λ polarization is found in our calculation, which is absent from hydrodynamic simulation using other initialization methods, and it can be tested by future experimental data with higher precision. The relation between global polarization and the directed flow of Λ is explored as the longitudinal flow field or the medium deformation varies. Due to the common origin of these two observables, their combination may provide a more stringent constraint on the initial condition of the QGP. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.108.064904 ©2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:Produced partons have a large local relative orbital angular momentum along the direction opposite to the reaction plane in the early stage of noncentral heavy-ion collisions. Parton scattering is shown to polarize quarks along the same direction due to spin-orbital coupling. Such global quark polarization will lead to many observable consequences, such as left-right asymmetry of hadron spectra and global transverse polarization of thermal photons, dileptons, and hadrons. Hadrons from the decay of polarized resonances will have an azimuthal asymmetry similar to the elliptic flow. Global hyperon polarization is studied within different hadronization scenarios and can be easily tested.

Abstract:The gluon polarization tensor for quark–gluon plasma with shear viscosity is derived with the viscous chromohydrodynamics. The longitudinal and transverse dielectric functions are evaluated from the gluon polarization tensor, through which the polarization energy loss suffered by a fast quark traveling through the viscous quark–gluon plasma is investigated. The numerical analysis indicates that shear viscosity significantly reduces the polarization energy loss.

Abstract:We study the polarized gluon distribution Δg(x) in a longitudinally polarized proton. We argue that the distribution can be calculated approximately from the quark color currents found in simple quark models. The first result from the MIT bag model as well as the non-relativistic quark model shows that Δg(x) is positive at all x. If this feature holds in QCD, it imposes a strong constraint on phenomenological fits to experimental data. The total gluon helicity ΔG from the bag model is about 0.3ℏ at the scale of 1 GeV, considerably smaller than previous theoretical expectations.
Polarization Dynamics in Paramagnet of Charged Quark-Gluon Plasma

Abstract:It is commonly understood that the strong magnetic field produced in heavy ion collisions is short-lived. The electric conductivity of the quark-gluon plasma is unable to significantly extend the life time of magnetic field. We propose an alternative scenario to achieve this: with finite baryon density and spin polarization by the initial magnetic field, the quark-gluon plasma behaves as a paramagnet, which may continue to polarize quark after fading of initial magnetic field. We confirm this picture by calculations in both quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics. In the former case, we find a splitting in the damping rates of probe fermion with opposite spin component along the magnetic field. In the latter case, we find a similar splitting in damping rate of probe quark in quark-gluon plasma in both high density and low density limits. The splitting provides a way of polarizing strange quarks by the quark-gluon plasma paramagnet consisting of light quarks, which effectively extends the lifetime of magnetic field in heavy ion collisions.

Polarized Parton Distribution Functions Reexamined

Abstract:The hard-gluonic contribution to the first moment of the polarized proton structure function $g_1^p(x)$ is dependent of the factorization convention chosen in defining the quark spin density and the hard cross section for photon-gluon scattering. Two extremes of interest, namely gauge-invariant and chiral-invariant factorization schemes, are considered. We show that in order to satisfy the positivity constraint for sea and gluon polarizations, the polarized valence quark distributions should fully account for the observed $g_1^p(x)$ at $x\gsim 0.2\,$. This together with the first-moment and perturbative QCD constraints puts a pertinent restriction on the shape of $\Delta u_v(x)$ and $\Delta d_v(x)$. The spin-dependent sea distribution in the gauge-invariant factorization scheme is extracted from the data of $g_1^p(x)$. It is shown in the chiral invariant scheme that it is possible to interpret the $g_1^p(x)$ data with anomalous gluonic contributions, yet a best least $\chi^2$ fit to the data implies a gluon spin distribution which violates the positivity condition $|\Delta G(x)|\leq G(x)$. We then propose a more realistic set of parton spin distributions with sea polarization and with a moderate value of $\Delta G$. The polarized parton distributions in this work are presented in the next-to-leading order of QCD at the scale $Q^2=10\,{\rm GeV}^2\,$. Predictions for the polarized structure functions $g_1^n(x)$ of the neutron and $g_1^d(x)$ of the deuteron are given.

Abstract:We study azimuthal asymmetries in diffractive Jl psi production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies using the color glass condensate effective theory. Our calculation successfully describes the azimuthal averaged Jl psi production cross section measured by STAR and ALICE. We further predict very large cos 2 phi and cos 4 phi azimuthal asymmetries for diffractive Jl psi production both in UPCs at RHIC and LHC energies and in eA collisions at EIC energies. These novel polarization dependent observables may provide complementary information for constraining gluon transverse spatial distribution inside large nuclei. As compared to all previous analysis of diffractive Jl psi production, the essential new elements integrated in our theoretical calculations are: the double-slit interference effect, the linear polarization of coherent photons, and the final state soft photon radiation effect.
Gluon TMDs from J/$ψ$ production in longitudinally polarized deeply inelastic scattering

Abstract:We investigate the feasibility of exploring the gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions (TMDs) inside a longitudinally polarized nucleon. We utilize quarkonium production via the color-octet mechanism combined with TMD formalism in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) at low transverse momentum as a tool to access polarized gluon TMDs. The corresponding cross-section of the process is expressed in terms of gluon TMDs and non-relativistic QCD matrix elements. We provide the expressions for the $\sin2\phi$ azimuthal asymmetries of $J/\psi$ production in SIDIS with a unpolarized beam colliding on longitudinally polarized nucleon. The asymmetry is contributed by the time-reversal-odd gluon TMD $h_{1L}^{\perp \,g}(x,\boldsymbol{p}_T^2)$. The maximum possible asymmetry deduced from the positivity bound is sizable and could be measured. We also estimate the double longitudinal spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ of $J/\psi$ production using a spectator model result for $g_{1L}^g(x,\boldsymbol{p}_T^2)$.

Abstract:By using the analytic continuation method, a polarized Polykov-loop potential at finite real angular velocity is constructed from the lattice results at finite imaginary angular velocity. The chiral and deconfinement phase transitions under rotation have been simultaneously investigated in the polarized-Polyakov-loop Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (PPNJL) model. It is observed that both critical temperatures of deconfinement and chiral phase transition increase with the angular velocity, which is in consistent with lattice results. The spin alignment of vector meson has the negative deviation of ρ00−1/3 under rotation, and the deviation in the PPNJL model is much more significant than that in the NJL model and the quark coalescence model, which revealing the important role of rotating gluons on the quark polarization. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.116017 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:The total gluon helicity in a polarized proton, measurable in high-energy scattering, is shown to be the large momentum limit of a gauge-invariant but nonlocal, frame-dependent gluon spin (E) over right arrow x (A) over right arrow (perpendicular to) in QCD. This opens a door for a nonperturbative calculation of this quantity in lattice QCD and also justifies using free-field expressions in the light-cone gauge as physical observables.

Abstract:The total gluon helicity in a polarized proton is shown to be a matrix element of a gauge-invariant but nonlocal, frame-dependent gluon spin operator [Formula: see text] in the large momentum limit. The operator [Formula: see text] is fit for the calculation of the total gluon helicity in lattice QCD. This calculation also implies that parton physics can be studied through the large momentum limit of frame-dependent, equal-time correlation functions of quarks and gluons.

Abstract:Operator-product expansion (OPE) can be employed to obtain the lowest-order, nonlocal quark scalar condensate component of gluon vacuum polarization. In particular, the nonlocal quark scalar condensate can be calculated by solving the Dyson–Schwinger equation (DSE) of QCD. Then, field-theoretical aspects of the gluon vacuum polarization and nonperturbative gluon propagator are considered in the Landau gauge. The gluon propagator we obtained is finite in the infrared domain, where the single gluon mass [Formula: see text] can be determined. Our results for the [Formula: see text] ratio range of that from 1.32 to 1.36, which agrees with previous determinations for this ratio. Then, the analytic structure of the gluon propagators from the OPE results is explored. The analysis of the gluon Schwinger function finds clear evidence of the positivity violations in the gluon propagator. In addition, the results of replacing the OPE simplified quark loop with the full quark one-loop are calculated in vacuum to investigate how good the OPE approximation approach is. The results demonstrate that the OPE approach provides a good approximate method to calculate the full light [Formula: see text] quark loop in vacuum. In particular, the OPE approach can well approximate the approach with full quark one-loop in a specific model. Finally, a new method for obtaining the chemical potential dependence of the gluon vacuum polarization and the dressed gluon propagators is developed.

Abstract:Quarks produced in the early stage of noncentral heavy-ion collisions could develop a global spin polarization along the opposite direction of the reaction plane due to the spin-orbital coupling via parton interaction in a medium that has finite longitudinal flow shear along the direction of the impact parameter. We study how such polarization evolves via multiple scattering in a viscous quark-gluon plasma with an initial laminar flow. The final polarization is found to be sensitive to the viscosity and the initial shear of local longitudinal flow.
