The possibility of spontaneous full spin polarization expected at lower electron densities also crucially depends on screening.

Abstract:We revisit the Hofstadter butterfly for a subset of topologically trivial Bloch bands arising from a continuum free electron Hamiltonian in a periodic lattice potential. We employ the recently developed procedure -- which was previously used to analyze the case of topologically non-trivial bands [\href{<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://journals.aps.org/prb/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevB.106.L121111" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>}{Phys. Rev. B \textbf{106}, L121111 (2022)}] -- to construct the finite field Hilbert space from the zero-field hybrid Wannier basis states. Such states are Bloch extended along one direction and exponentially localized along the other. The method is illustrated for square and triangular lattice potentials and is shown to reproduce all the main features of the Hofstadter spectrum obtained from a numerically exact Landau level expansion method. In the regime when magnetic length is much longer than the spatial extent of the hybrid Wannier state in the localized direction we recover the well known Harper equation. Because the method applies to both topologically trivial and non-trivial bands, it provides an alternative and efficient approach to moiré materials in magnetic field.

Hofstadter butterflies and magnetically induced band gap quenching in graphene antidot lattices

Abstract:We study graphene antidot lattices (GALs) in magnetic fields. Using a tight-binding model and a recursive Green's function technique that we extend to deal with periodic structures, we calculate Hofstadter butterflies of GALs. We compare the results to those obtained in a simpler gapped graphene model. A crucial difference emerges in the behaviour of the lowest Landau level, which in a gapped graphene model is independent of magnetic field. In stark contrast to this picture, we find that in GALs the band gap can be completely closed by applying a magnetic field. While our numerical simulations can only be performed on structures much smaller than can be experimentally realized, we find that the critical magnetic field for which the gap closes can be directly related to the ratio between the cyclotron radius and the neck width of the GAL. In this way, we obtain a simple scaling law for extrapolation of our results to more realistically sized structures and find resulting quenching magnetic fields that should be well within reach of experiments.

Probing miniband structure and Hofstadter butterfly in gated graphene superlattices via magnetotransport

Abstract:The presence of periodic modulation in graphene leads to a reconstruction of the band structure and formation of minibands. In an external uniform magnetic field, a fractal energy spectrum called Hofstadter butterfly is formed. Particularly interesting in this regard are superlattices with tunable modulation strength, such as electrostatically induced ones in graphene. We perform quantum transport modeling in gate-induced square two-dimensional superlattice in graphene and investigate the relation to the details of the band structure. At low magnetic field the dynamics of carriers reflects the semi-classical orbits which depend on the mini band structure. We theoretically model transverse magnetic focusing, a ballistic transport technique by means of which we investigate the minibands, their extent and carrier type. We find a good agreement between the focusing spectra and the mini band structures obtained from the continuum model, proving usefulness of this technique. %positions of van Hove singularities at high magnetic field the calculated four-probe resistance fit the Hofstadter butterfly spectrum obtained for our superlattice. Our quantum transport modeling provides an insight into the mini band structures, and can be applied to other superlattice geometries.

Abstract:AbstractElectronic bands in a square lattice when subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field form the Hofstadter butterfly pattern. We study the evolution of this pattern as a function of bond percolation disorder (removal or dilution of lattice bonds). With increasing concentration of the bonds removed, the butterfly pattern gets smoothly decimated. However, in this process of decimation, bands develop interesting characteristics and features. For example, in the high disorder limit, some butterfly-like pattern still persists even as most of the states are localized. We also analyze, in the low disorder limit, the effect of percolation on wavefunctions (using inverse participation ratios) and on band gaps in the spectrum. We explain and provide the reasons behind many of the key features in our results by analyzing small clusters and finite size rings. Furthermore, we study the effect of bond dilution on transverse conductivity (σxy). We show that starting from the clean limit, increasing disorder reduces σxy to zero, even though the strength of percolation is smaller than the classical percolation threshold. This shows that the system undergoes a direct transition from a integer quantum Hall state to a localized Anderson insulator beyond a critical value of bond dilution. We further find that the energy bands close to the band edge are more stable to disorder than at the band center. To arrive at these results we use the coupling matrix approach to calculate Chern numbers for disordered systems. We point out the relevance of these results to signatures in magneto-oscillations.

Abstract:We consider the tight-binding models of electrons on a two-dimensional triangular lattice and kagome lattice under staggered modulated magnetic fields. Such fields have two components: a uniform-flux part with strength phi, and a staggered-flux part with strength Delta phi. Various properties of the Hall conductances and Hofstadter butterflies are studied. When phi is fixed, variation of Delta phi leads to the quantum Hall transitions and Chern numbers of Landau subbands being redistributed between neighboring pairs. The energy spectra with nonzero Delta phi s have similar fractal structures but quite different energy gaps compared with the original Hofstadter butterflies of Delta phi = 0. Moreover, the fan-like structure of Landau levels in the low magnetic field region is also modified appreciably by Delta phi.

Abstract:In order to engage in goal-directed behavior, cognitive agents have to control the processing of task-relevant features in their environments. Although cognitive control is critical for performance in unpredictable task environments, it is currently unknown how it affects performance in highly structured and predictable environments. In the present study, we showed that, counterintuitively, top-down control can impair and interfere with the otherwise automatic integration of statistical information in a predictable task environment, and it can render behavior less efficient than it would have been without the attempt to control the flow of information. In other words, less can sometimes be more (in terms of cognitive control), especially if the environment provides sufficient information for the cognitive system to behave on autopilot based on automatic processes alone.
Hofstadter's butterfly in moire superlattices: A fractal quantum Hall effect

Abstract:Electrons moving through a spatially periodic lattice potential develop a quantized energy spectrum consisting of discrete Bloch bands. In two dimensions, electrons moving through a magnetic field also develop a quantized energy spectrum, consisting of highly degenerate Landau energy levels. In 1976 Douglas Hofstadter theoretically considered the intersection of these two problems and discovered that 2D electrons subjected to both a magnetic field and a periodic electrostatic potential exhibit a self-similar recursive energy spectrum. Known as Hofstadter's butterfly, this complex spectrum results from a delicate interplay between the characteristic lengths associated with the two quantizing fields, and represents one of the first quantum fractals discovered in physics. In the decades since, experimental attempts to study this effect have been limited by difficulties in reconciling the two length scales. Typical crystalline systems (<1 nm periodicity) require impossibly large magnetic fields to reach the commensurability condition, while in artificially engineered structures (>100 nm), the corresponding fields are too small to completely overcome disorder. Here we demonstrate that moire superlattices arising in bilayer graphene coupled to hexagonal boron nitride provide a nearly ideal-sized periodic modulation, enabling unprecedented experimental access to the fractal spectrum. We confirm that quantum Hall effect features associated with the fractal gaps are described by two integer topological quantum numbers, and report evidence of their recursive structure. Observation of Hofstadter's spectrum in graphene provides the further opportunity to investigate emergent behaviour within a fractal energy landscape in a system with tunable internal degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Hofstadter's diagrams (the energy spectra plotted against the magnetic flux strength phi) of tight-binding lattice electrons under n root 2x n root 2 staggered magnetic fields are obtained for various n's. From n=1-14, these butterflylike continuous spectrum diagrams exhibit a systematic evolution approaching the fractal Hofstadter butterfly spectrum. For larger n's, these butterflies can be roughly divided into two kinds of regions, the "Hofstadter-type regions" which bear the fractal structures, and the "non-Hofstadter-type regions" which are composed of almost equally spaced subbands. The properties of electronic states in the non-Hofstadter-type regions are revealed in detail.

Abstract:Patterns are a tool that enables the collective knowledge of a particular community to be recorded and transmitted in an efficient manner. Initially developed in the field of architecture and later developed by software engineers [6], they have now been adopted by the complex systems modelling community [15]. It can be argued that, while most complex systems models are idiosyncratic and highly specify to the task for which they are constructed, certain tools and methodologies may be abstracted to a level at which they are more generally applicable. This paper presents one such pattern, Perturbation Analysis, which describes the underlying framework used by several analytical and visualisation tools to quantify and explore the stability of dynamic systems. The format of this paper follows the outline specified in [15].

Abstract:We probe the strength of electron-electron interactions using magnetoconductivity measurements of two-dimensional non-degenerate electrons on liquid helium at 1.22 K. Our data extend to electron densities that are two orders of magnitude smaller than previously reported. We span both the independent-electron regime where the data are qualitatively described by the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA), and the strongly-interacting electron regime. At finite fields we observe a crossover from SCBA to Drude theory as a function of electron density.

Abstract:In this chapter, we investigate the energy spectra as well as the bulk and surface states in a two-dimensional system composed of a coupled stack of one-dimensional dimerized chains in the presence of an external magnetic field. Specifically, we analyze the Hofstadter butterfly patterns that emerge in a 2D stack of coupled 1D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains subject to an external transverse magnetic field. Depending on the parameter regime, we find that the energy spectra of this hybrid topological system can exhibit topologically non-trivial bulk bands separated by energy gaps. Upon introducing boundaries into the system, we observe topologically protected in-gap surface states, which are protected either by a non-trivial Chern number or by inversion symmetry. We examine the resilience of these surface states against perturbations, confirming their expected stability against local symmetry-preserving perturbations.

Genesis of the Floquet Hofstadter butterfly

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the spectrum of a graphene-like sample (honeycomb lattice) subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field and irradiated by circularly polarized light. This system is studied using the Floquet formalism, and the resulting Hofstadter spectrum is analyzed for different regimes of the driving frequency. For lower frequencies, resonances of various copies of the spectrum lead to intricate formations of topological gaps. In the Landau-level regime, new wing-like gaps emerge upon reducing the driving frequency, thus revealing the possibility of dynamically tuning the formation of the Hofstadter butterfly. In this regime, an effective model may be analytically derived, which allows us to retrace the energy levels that exhibit avoided crossings and ultimately lead to gap structures with a wing-like shape. At high frequencies, we find that gaps open for various fluxes at $E=0$, and upon increasing the amplitude of the driving, gaps also close and reopen at other energies. The topological invariants of these gaps are calculated and the resulting spectrum is elucidated. We suggest opportunities for experimental realization and discuss similarities with Landau-level structures in non-driven systems.

Abstract:We calculate the magnetization of the two-dimensional electron gas in a short-period lateral superlattice, with the Coulomb interaction included in Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations. We compare the results for a finite, mesoscopic system modulated by a periodic potential, with the results for the infinite periodic system. In addition to the expected strong exchange effects, the size of the system, the type and the strength of the lateral modulation leave their fingerprints on the magnetization.

Abstract:We give a perspective on the Hofstadter butterfly (fractal energy spectrum in magnetic fields), which we have shown to arise specifically in three-dimensional(3D) systems in our previous work. (i) We first obtain the `phase diagram' on a parameter space of the transfer energies and the magnetic field for the appearance of Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum in anisotropic crystals in 3D. (ii) We show that the orientation of the external magnetic field can be arbitrary to have the 3D butterfly. (iii) We show that the butterfly is beyond the semiclassical description. (iv) The required magnetic field for a representative organic metal is estimated to be modest ($\sim 40$ T) if we adopt higher Landau levels for the butterfly. (v) We give a simpler way of deriving the topological invariants that represent the quantum Hall numbers (i.e., two Hall conductivity in 3D, $\sigma_{xy}, \sigma_{zx}$, in units of $e^2/h$).

Magneto-optical properties of electron gas in a chain of planar quantum rings: Effect of screening on the signature of quantum phase interference

Abstract:The equilibrium properties and interminiband transitions for Hartree-interacting two-dimensional electron gas in a one-dimensional chain of planar quantum rings subjected to a transverse homogeneous magnetic field are examined theoretically and numerically. The proposed analytical models for the external modulation potential and the basis wave-function reflect the symmetry and the topology of the system allowing to get high accuracy results in comparatively short computational times. The calculated dependencies of the electronic band structure versus magnetic field show two detached minibands in the region of low energies, while higher minibands manifest multiple crossings and anticrossings. The existence of highly degenerate energy levels (referred to as miniband nodes) for certain values of magnetic field is revealed. The miniband nodes are preserved when taking into account the Coulomb interaction of the electrons. The interaction leads to an up-shift and a broadening of the minibands, as well as to a shift of the nodes toward the larger values of the magnetic field. The miniband nodes have their signature in the magnetization of the electron gas and in the interminiband transitions. The number of electrons per a unite cell of the system has a strong impact on the current density distribution, magnetization and the oscillator strength. The obtained results open new opportunities for a flexible manipulation of magneto-optical properties of future devices operating in far-infrared and THz regimes.

Abstract:The energy spectrum of a tight-binding Hamiltonian is studied for the two-dimensional quasiperiodic Rauzy tiling in a perpendicular magnetic field. This spectrum known as a Hofstadter butterfly displays a very rich pattern of bulk gaps that are labeled by four integers, instead of two for periodic systems. The role of phason-flip disorder is also investigated in order to extract genuinely quasiperiodic properties. This geometric disorder is found to only preserve main quantum Hall gaps.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the electronic spectrum of graphene in a one-dimensional periodic potential will develop a Landau level spectrum when the potential magnitude varies slowly in space. The effect is related to extra Dirac points generated by the potential whose positions are sensitive to its magnitude. We develop an effective theory that exploits a chiral symmetry in the Dirac Hamiltonian description with a superlattice potential, to show that the low energy theory contains an effective magnetic field. Numerical diagonalization of the Dirac equation confirms the presence of Landau levels. Possible consequences for transport are discussed.

Geometric Superconductivity in 3D Hofstadter Butterfly

Abstract:Electrons on the lattice subject to a strong magnetic field exhibit the fractal spectrum of electrons, which is known as the Hofstadter butterfly. In this work, we investigate unconventional superconductivity in a three-dimensional Hofstadter butterfly system. While it is generally difficult to achieve the Hofstadter regime, we show that the quasi-two-dimensional materials with a tilted magnetic field produce the large-scale superlattices, which generate the Hofstadter butterfly even at the moderate magnetic field strength. We first show that the van-Hove singularities of the butterfly flat bands greatly elevate the superconducting critical temperature, offering a new mechanism of field-enhanced superconductivity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the quantum geometry of the Landau mini-bands plays a crucial role in the description of the superconductivity, which is shown to be clearly distinct from the conventional superconductors. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our results to the recently discovered re-entrant superconductivity of UTe2 in strong magnetic fields.

Abstract:Motivated by the analysis of the tunneling effect for the magnetic Laplacian, we introduce an abstract framework for the spectral reduction of a self-adjoint operator to a hermitian matrix. We illustrate this framework by three applications, firstly the electro-magnetic Laplacian with constant magnetic field and three equidistant potential wells, secondly a pure constant magnetic field and Neumann boundary condition in a smoothed triangle, and thirdly a magnetic step where the discontinuity line is a smoothed triangle. Flux effects are visible in the three aforementioned settings through the occurrence of eigenvalue crossings. Moreover, in the electro-magnetic Laplacian setting with double well radial potential, we rule out an artificial condition on the distance of the wells and extend the range of validity for a recently established tunneling approximation, thereby settling the problem of electro-magnetic tunneling under constant magnetic field and a sum of translated radial electric potentials.
