Perturbation Analysis: A Complex Systems Pattern

N. Geard,K. Willadsen,Janet Wiles
Abstract:Patterns are a tool that enables the collective knowledge of a particular community to be recorded and transmitted in an efficient manner. Initially developed in the field of architecture and later developed by software engineers [6], they have now been adopted by the complex systems modelling community [15]. It can be argued that, while most complex systems models are idiosyncratic and highly specify to the task for which they are constructed, certain tools and methodologies may be abstracted to a level at which they are more generally applicable. This paper presents one such pattern, Perturbation Analysis, which describes the underlying framework used by several analytical and visualisation tools to quantify and explore the stability of dynamic systems. The format of this paper follows the outline specified in [15].
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the screening effect of composite fermion systems (including single - layer and double - layer systems) on external electrostatic potentials. Specifically, the author explores how the electric field of a test charge is partially screened by a two - dimensional electron layer or a double - layer system when the test charge is near the boundary of a semi - infinite medium in the quantum Hall effect. ### Main problems and background 1. **Composite fermion model**: - The composite fermion model was proposed by Jain to describe the quantum Hall system in the fractional filling factor hierarchy. By introducing statistical charges and statistical gauge field fluxes, the composite fermion model can explain the fractional quantum Hall effect. 2. **Screening effect**: - The author studied how the electric field of a test charge is partially screened when the magnetic length is much smaller than the distance. The degree of screening depends on the filling factor of the system, and in a double - layer system, the screening value changes as it transitions from one state to a state described by the Halperin wave function. 3. **Experimental verification**: - The research results can provide experimental verification for the composite fermion model, and the change in topological order can be probed by observing the screening effect at different filling factors and layer spacings. ### Summary of mathematical expressions - **Effective magnetic field**: \[ B_{\text{eff}} = B - \frac{2\pi c \phi}{|e|} n_0 \] where \( B \) is the external magnetic field, \( \phi \) is the gauge field flux quantum number carried by the composite quasiparticle, and \( n_0 \) is the uniform electron concentration. - **Electromagnetic field action**: \[ S(A) = \frac{1}{4\pi} \int dtdq_zdq'_z d^2q A^*_{\mu q q_z} \Lambda^{\mu\nu}_q A_{\nu q q'_z} + \frac{1}{2} \int dtdq_z d^2q A^*_{\mu q q_z} \Pi^{\mu\nu}_{\text{em}}(q, q_z) A_{\nu q q_z} \] - **Screened electric field**: \[ E_{\text{pl}}(r) = -\frac{e_{\text{ext}}}{\epsilon r^2} \left( 1 + F(r) \right) \] where \( F(r) \) is a function depending on the ground state of the system, and its specific form is: \[ F(r) = \frac{\epsilon}{\epsilon' r^2} \int dq J_1(qr) \frac{q f_q \Sigma_0 e^{-2qa}}{\Delta_1 - f_q \Sigma_0 (1 + \epsilon^{-1} e^{-2qa})} \] ### Conclusion This research reveals the screening effect of the composite fermion system on the electric field of the test charge, especially the change of this effect at different filling factors and layer spacings. These results are helpful for understanding the composite fermion model and provide a theoretical basis for experimental verification.
