Abstract:We present first results from SPICES, the Spectroscopic, Photometric, Infrared-Chosen Extragalactic Survey. SPICES is comprised of four ~30 square arcminute high Galactic latitude fields with deep BRIzJK imaging reaching depths of ~25th magnitude (AB) in the optical and ~23rd magnitude (AB) in the near-infrared. To date we have 626 spectroscopic redshifts for infrared-selected SPICES sources with K<20 (Vega). The project is poised to address galaxy formation and evolution to redshift z~2. We discuss initial results from the survey, including the surface density of extremely red objects and the fraction of infrared sources at z>1. One of the SPICES fields has been the target of a deep 190 ksec Chandra exposure; we discuss initial results from analysis of that data set. Finally, we briefly discuss a successful campaign to identify high-redshift sources in the SPICES fields.

Meron-Like Topological Spin Defects in Monolayer CrCl3

Abstract:Noncollinear spin textures in low-dimensional magnetic systems have been studied for decades because of their extraordinary properties and promising applications derived from the chirality and topological nature. However, material realizations of topological spin states are still limited. Employing first-principles and Monte Carlo simulations, we propose that monolayer chromium trichloride (CrCl3) can be a promising candidate for observing the vortex/antivortex type of topological defects, so-called merons. The numbers of vortices and antivortices are found to be the same, maintaining an overall integer topological unit. By perturbing with external magnetic fields, we show the robustness of these meron pairs and reveal a rich phase space to tune the hybridization between the ferromagnetic order and meron-like defects. The signatures of topological excitations under external magnetic field also provide crucial information for experimental justifications. Our study predicts that two-dimensional magnets with weak spin-orbit coupling can be a promising family for realizing meron-like spin textures.

Abstract:Topological magnetic defects in multiferroic materials acquire an electric charge or dipole moment due to the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism. This magnetoelectric coupling makes possible to excite large-amplitude collective motion of topological magnetic textures with an oscillating electric field. Here, I discuss electric excitation of a polar optical mode in a vortex-antivortex crystal and the electrically-induced spin precession in a magnetic skyrmion, which gives rise to rotation of skyrmions around each other and a translational motion of skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs. The electric manipulation of magnetic topological defects in Mott insulators can find applications in magnetoelectric memory and logical devices.

Higher order topological defects in a moiré lattice

Abstract:Topological defects are ubiquitous, they manifest in a wide variety of systems such as liquid crystals, magnets or superconductors. The recent quest for nonabelian anyons in condensed matter physics stimulates the interest for topological defects since they can be hosted in vortices in quantum magnets or topological superconductors. In addition to these vortex defects, in this study we propose to investigate edge dislocations in 2D magnets as new building blocks for topological physics since they can be described as vortices in the structural phase field. Here we demonstrate the existence of higher order topological dislocations within the higher order moiré pattern of the van der Waals 2D magnet CrCl3 deposited on Au(111). Surprizingly, these higher order dislocations arise from ordinary simple edge dislocations in the atomic lattice of CrCl3. We provide a theoretical framework explaining the higher order dislocations as vortex with a winding Chern number of 2. We expect that these original defects could stabilize some anyons either in a 2D quantum magnet or within a 2D superconductor coupled to it.

Abstract:Above room temperature T-c, magnetism is becoming viable in diluted magnetic semiconductors, which show different magnetic orders, depending on the dopant type and their fabrication method. However, how the defects can influence the magnetic properties remains unclear at the atomic level. In this article, by taking the Co-doped tetragonal MO2 (t-MO2, M = Ti, Sn, Hf, and Zr) as an example, the density functional theory-based investigations show that the magnetic order is mainly decided by the defect clustering effect, following a "defect-distance-based" defect correlation principle. It is found that the distance between two defects (Co-Co) leads to an alteration of magnetic order, where SnO2 and ZrO2 show antiferromagnetic (AFM) behavior when the nearest Co-Co distance lies within one octahedron, while a larger distance gives rise to the ferromagnetic (FM) state. In contrast, TiO2 exhibits an AFM state at the neighboring Co-Co configuration with the nearest Co-Co distance larger than one octahedra, while HfO2 showed an opposite trend as that of TiO2. Furthermore, the position of oxygen vacancies mainly affects the magnitude of magnetization instead of magnetic order. We believe this work would significantly advances the understanding of defect chemistry and condensed matter physics related to diluted FM-AFM systems.

Abstract:The phase of the quantum-mechanical wave function can encode a topological structure with wide-ranging physical consequences, such as anomalous transport effects and the existence of edge states robust against perturbations. While this has been exhaustively demonstrated for electrons, properties associated with the elementary quasiparticles in magnetic materials are still underexplored. Here, we show theoretically and via inelastic neutron scattering experiments that the bulk ferromagnet Mn5Ge3 hosts gapped topological Dirac magnons. Although inversion symmetry prohibits a net Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the unit cell, it is locally allowed and is responsible for the gap opening in the magnon spectrum. This gap is predicted and experimentally verified to close by rotating the magnetization away from the c-axis with an applied magnetic field. Hence, Mn5Ge3 realizes a gapped Dirac magnon material in three dimensions. Its tunability by chemical doping or by thin film nanostructuring defines an exciting new platform to explore and design topological magnons. More generally, our experimental route to verify and control the topological character of the magnons is applicable to bulk centrosymmetric hexagonal materials, which calls for systematic investigation.

Abstract:Defects intentionally introduced into magnetic materials often have a profound effect on the physical properties. Specifically tailored neutron spectroscopic experiments can provide detailed information on both the local exchange interactions and the local distances between the magnetic atoms around the defects. This is demonstrated for manganese dimer excitations observed for the magnetically diluted three- and two-dimensional compounds KMn(x)Zn(1-x)F(3) and K(2)Mn(x)Zn(1-x)F(4), respectively. The resulting local exchange interactions deviate up to 10% from the average, and the local Mn-Mn distances are found to vary stepwise with increasing internal pressure due to the Mn/Zn substitution. Our analysis qualitatively supports the theoretically predicted decay of atomic displacements according to 1/r**2, 1/r, and constant (for three-, two-, and one-dimensional compounds, respectively) where r denotes the distance of the displaced atoms from the defect.

Abstract:We consider a new class of topological defects in chiral magnetic crystals such as FeGe and MnSi. These are composite topological defects that arise when skyrmions in the magnetic order intersect with twin boundaries in the underlying crystalline lattice. We show that the resulting stable configurations are a new type of defect that can be viewed as half-hopfions.

Abstract:We consider a defect in a strongly correlated host metal and discuss, within a slave boson mean field formalism for the $t-t'-J$ model, the formation of an induced paramagnetic moment which is extended over nearby sites. We study in particular an impurity in a metallic band, suitable for modelling the optimally doped cuprates, in a regime where the impurity moment is paramagnetic. The form of the local susceptibility as a function of temperature and doping is found to agree well with recent NMR experiments, without including screening processes leading to the Kondo effect.

Surface-step Defect in Three-Dimensional Topological Insulators: Electric Manipulation of Spin and Quantum Spin Hall Effect

Abstract:We study the influence of a step defect on surface states in three-dimensional topological insulators subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. By calculating the energy spectrum of the surface states, we find that Landau levels (LLs) can form on flat regions of the surface and are distant from the step defect, and several subbands emerge at the side surface of the step defect. The subband which connects to the two zeroth LLs is spin polarized and chiral. In particular, when the electron transports along the side surface, the electron spin direction can be manipulated arbitrarily by gate voltage. Also, no reflection occurs even if the electron spin direction is changed. This provides a fascinating avenue to control the electron spin easily and coherently. In addition, regarding the subbands with a high LL index, there exist spin-momentum locking helical states and the quantum spin Hall effect can appear.

Abstract:Topological defects are an essential part of the structure and dynamics of all liquid crystals, and they are particularly important in experiments and simulations on active liquid crystals. In a recent paper, Vromans and Giomi [Soft Matter, 2016, 12, 6490] pointed out that topological defects are not point-like objects but actually have orientational properties, which strongly affect the energetics and motion of the defects. That paper developed a mathematical formalism which describes the orientational properties as vectors. Here, we agree with the basic concept of defect orientation, but we suggest an alternative mathematical formalism. We represent the defect orientation by a tensor, with a rank that depends on the topological charge: rank 1 for a charge of +1/2, rank 3 for a charge of -1/2. Using this tensor formalism, we calculate the orientation-dependent interaction between defects, and we present numerical simulations of defect motion.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the combined influence of the nontrivial topology introduced by a disclination and non inertial effects due to rotation, in the energy levels and the wave functions of a noninteracting electron gas confined to a two-dimensional pseudoharmonic quantum dot, under the influence of an external uniform magnetic field. The exact solutions for energy eigenvalues and wave functions are computed as functions of the applied magnetic field strength, the disclination topological charge, magnetic quantum number and the rotation speed of the sample. We investigate the modifications on the light interband absorption coefficient and absorption threshold frequency. We observe novel features in the system, including a range of magnetic field without corresponding absorption phenomena, which is due to a tripartite term of the Hamiltonian, involving magnetic field, the topological charge of the defect and the rotation frequency.

Anomalous Hall Effect and Topological Defects in Antiferromagnetic Weyl Semimetals: Mn_{3}Sn/Ge

Abstract:We theoretically study the interplay between bulk Weyl electrons and magnetic topological defects, including magnetic domains, domain walls, and Z_{6} vortex lines, in the antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals Mn_{3}Sn and Mn_{3}Ge with negative vector chirality. We argue that these materials possess a hierarchy of energy scales, which allows a description of the spin structure and spin dynamics using an XY model with Z_{6} anisotropy. We propose a dynamical equation of motion for the XY order parameter, which implies the presence of Z_{6} vortex lines, the double-domain pattern in the presence of magnetic fields, and the ability to control domains with current. We also introduce a minimal electronic model that allows efficient calculation of the electronic structure in the antiferromagnetic configuration, unveiling Fermi arcs at domain walls, and sharp quasibound states at Z_{6} vortices. Moreover, we have shown how these materials may allow electronic-based imaging of antiferromagnetic microstructure, and propose a possible device based on the domain-dependent anomalous Hall effect.
Defect-induced spin textures in magnetic solids

Abstract:We investigate spin textures induced by nonmagnetic vacancies in classical noncollinear magnets. By developing an "elasticity theory" for spin systems, we show that a defect-induced spin readjustment decays with a power law at large distances. The power-law exponent depends on the multipole moment of the local spin deformation, which is in turn determined by both the lattice symmetry and the equilibrium spin configuration in the absence of a defect. The interplay of these two ingredients is best illustrated by the J1-J2 Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice for which a point vacancy may produce spin deformations that decay as 1/r^2 for the q=0 ground state and as a 1/r for the \sqrt{3} x \sqrt{3} magnetic structure. The analytic conclusions are confirmed by extensive numerical simulations. We also compute the fractional magnetic moments associated with vacancies and other lattice defects. Our results shed light on relative fragility of different magnetic structures with respect to spin glass formation at higher doping levels.

Abstract:The Wiedemann-Franz law and Mott relation are textbook paradigms on the ratios of the thermal and thermo-electric conductivities to electrical conductivity, respectively. Deviations from them usually reveal insights for intriguing phases of matter. The recent topological kagome magnets TbMn6Sn6 and Mn3Ge show confusingly opposite derivations in the Hall measurement. We calculate the topological and disorder corrections to the Wiedemann-Franz law and Mott relation for the Hall responses in topological kagome magnets and Dirac materials. The calculation indicates the dominance of the topological correction in the experiments. More importantly, we derive analytic correction formulas, which can universally capture the two opposite experiments with the chemical potential as the only parameter and will be a powerful guidance for future explorations on the magnetic topological matter and Dirac materials.
First-Principles Study of the Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Defects in Carbon Nanostructures

Abstract:Understanding the magnetic properties of graphenic nanostructures is instrumental in future spintronics applications. These magnetic properties are known to depend crucially on the presence of defects. Here we review our recent theoretical studies using density functional calculations on two types of defects in carbon nanostructures: substitutional doping with transition metals, and sp3-type defects created by covalent functionalization with organic and inorganic molecules. We focus on such defects because they can be used to create and control magnetism in graphene-based materials. Our main results are summarized as follows:Substitutional metal impurities are fully understood using a model based on the hybridization between the d states of the metal atom and the defect levels associated with an unreconstructed D3h carbon vacancy. We identify three different regimes, associated with the occupation of distinct hybridization levels, which determine the magnetic properties obtained with this type of doping.A spin moment of 1.0 μB is always induced by chemical functionalization when a molecule chemisorbs on a graphene layer via a single C–C (or other weakly polar) covalent bond. The magnetic coupling between adsorbates shows a key dependence on the sublattice adsorption site. This effect is similar to that of H adsorption, however, with universal character.The spin moment of substitutional metal impurities can be controlled using strain. In particular, we show that although Ni substitutionals are nonmagnetic in flat and unstrained graphene, the magnetism of these defects can be activated by applying either uniaxial strain or curvature to the graphene layer.All these results provide key information about formation and control of defect-induced magnetism in graphene and related materials.

Abstract:We present a theory describing the single-ion anisotropy of rare-earth (RE) magnets in the presence of point defects. Taking the RE-lean 1∶12 magnet class as a prototype, we use first-principles calculations to show how the introduction of Ti substitutions into SmFe12 perturbs the crystal field, generating new coefficients due to the lower symmetry of the RE environment. We then demonstrate that these perturbations can be described extremely efficiently using a screened point charge model. We provide analytical expressions for the anisotropy energy that can be straightforwardly implemented in atomistic spin dynamics simulations, meaning that such simulations can be carried out for an arbitrary arrangement of point defects. The significant crystal field perturbations calculated here demonstrate that a sample that is single phase from a structural point of view can nonetheless have a dramatically varying anisotropy profile at the atomistic level if there is compositional disorder, which may influence localized magnetic objects like domain walls or skyrmions. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.056703 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Topological Zero-Dimensional Defect and Flux States in Three-Dimensional Insulators

Abstract:In insulating crystals, it was previously shown that defects with two fewer dimensions than the bulk can bind topological electronic states. We here further extend the classification of topological defect states by demonstrating that the corners of crystalline defects with integer Burgers vectors can bind 0D higher-order end (HEND) states with anomalous charge and spin. We demonstrate that HEND states are intrinsic topological consequences of the bulk electronic structure and introduce new bulk topological invariants that are predictive of HEND dislocation states in solid-state materials. We demonstrate the presence of first-order 0D defect states in PbTe monolayers and HEND states in 3D SnTe crystals. We relate our analysis to magnetic flux insertion in insulating crystals. We find that $\pi$-flux tubes in inversion- and time-reversal-symmetric (helical) higher-order topological insulators bind Kramers pairs of spin-charge-separated HEND states, which represent observable signatures of anomalous surface half quantum spin Hall states.

Electronic Topology with Bound Defect Charges Promotes Intermediate Hexatic Phase in Two-Dimensional Melting

Abstract:Disclinations play an amusing role in topological electronic states because of the ability to trap charges residing in the cores of these defects. According to the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young (KTHNY) theory of two-dimensional (2D) melting, unbinding the bound pairs of disclinations (i.e., dislocations) induces the structural transition from the hexatic to liquid phase, corresponding to the destruction of quasilong range order. In this work, we elucidate the interplay between topological electronic states and the KTHNY structural transition. We verify the existence of electronic topology -induced charges that are trapped at disclinations during the 2D melting of hard disk particles. Resorting to the Ewald technique, we calculate the real -space distribution of the electrostatic potential generated by nonuniform Coulomb gas composed of these trapped charges. We found that the nonzero gradient of the electrostatic potential gives rise to additional contributions to the hydrostatic pressure. Based on the linear elastic theory, we further show that the electronic topology -induced trapped charges add extra contributions to the core energy of dislocations, increase the energy barrier of dislocation unbinding, and eventually decrease the lower critical boundary of the hexatic phase in the phase diagram. Our finding not only gives a special perspective for studying amorphous topological insulators but proposes a new impacting mechanism in the deviation of the phase boundary of structural transitions.
